The Bee Gees were influenced by this group. They emulated this falsetto and style.

When I first heard this song, I was going to Basic Training in the Army. I was leaving everything behind and didn't know if I would pass this way again, and then Russell Thompkins tore me up with his amazing falsetto voice. Ya'll I thought I was hearing an angel. The greatest falsetto of all time. Of course I made it back or I wouldn't write this down. I'm an old man, but I still have a young heart. But in the end time has it's way with all of us. God bless ya'll. This is your boy from Tennessee! Peace!

North Philadelphia's own Stylistics! Lead singer Russell Tompkins Jr. was my brother in law's best friend when they were growing up. We're very proud to say that they are hometown guys!

This brings back very good memories. I lived in Hong Kong in the 70's, the Stylistics songs were playing in nearly every place, all the shops, etc. Loved their sound, still do.

Was part of an era dubbed “the Philadelphia sound”. Lots of great soul groups from this time. Check out the Chi-lites (one of many from Chicago) if like general style. Different era but if want totally unique, check out Roger & Zapp, so many artists still sampling from them. Unique funk/dance/soul music with many groups out of small city of Dayton, Ohio who busted onto national scene in US

Philadelphia Sound' is unmatched - and I grew up on Motown (50 miles outside Detroit). 'Philadelphia Sound' changed history. 1 Of the most viral, global songs of all-time. In the top-7 most played wedding reception songs, ever. Great reaction.

@@cducDiego Hey - everyone has their own opinion/taste. I don't think we can apply absolute's on opinione ( ie. saying "that's not true"). As mentioned , I respect your opinion, but do believe the Stylistic's verson is better. Both are enjoyable but I prefer the original. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one ....

Nope. Went back and listened to Simply Red. It's an EXACT copy of the original arrangement, that's NO. 1, and Never a good idea, And his voice has a distinct nasal quality not found in the Stylistic version, And there is also a country music Twang to the vocals. Then there's the Stylistics superb harmony--the song was written and arranged for a GROUP, and the instrumentation. (You should catch the Stylistics in concert. There is NO comparison.) NOPE.

@@veronicadabney1466 Good comment however I really only commented since Mick has a good range and did a good job I like the Stylistics from way back. A voice coach on you tube showed the video of Simply Red and gave her professional opinion which is how I ended up hearing that version. I suppose I should not have said it was better but different.
