The best to ever do it. He could get more out of one note than anyone I’ve ever heard. Emotional playing is something very few can do. He had it in spades
Paul Kossoff was a highly sought-after guitarist known for his remarkable timing and intricate soloing abilities. He was a guitarist in high demand because of his remarkable timing and complicated ability to solo as a member of the popular band “Free.” Unfortunately, Kossoff began using narcotics at the age of 15. On March 19, 1976, he died of a pulmonary embolism while flying from Los Angeles to New York. When he died, he was only 25 years old.
Was fortunate to have seen Free in Summer of 69. They were 2nd billing in the “Blind Faith Festival (Santa Barbara Fairgrounds). On a hot Summer day they stole the show! A favorite memory and so glad to have seen them.
This brings back so many memories. As a young girl in the 70's Free were my favourite band, still are. I could listen to Paul's guitar forever, my borzoi loves him too sang through all this video lol.
Check out his work with Free and his solo album titled Back Street Crawler, not to be confused with the band he formed later which was also named Back Street Crawler.
Probably the most expressive guitar ever recorded. How he pulled that out of the bag despite rapidly declining health both mentally and physically is a mystery to me. I get the feel of total frustration followed by exhausted resignation to his future, so damn sad.
Biggest regret upon this day was not seeing Koss play live the sounds out of his guitar still gives me the shivers totally out of this world RIP Paul totally missed.
Rory died after catching MRSA from a hospital . MRSA is linked to excessive antibiotic use in animals in the food industry . That is what killed him . He could have been in there for appendicitis , whatever , the infection got in from the surroundings . Not sure whether Hendrix’s haphazard drug use can really be called addiction …whereas Kossoff was a full on junkie, injecting regularly .
@@ruthyarrow Rory was hooked on the prescription pain pills after his liver (ruined by booze) transplant and amazingly that drove him back to drink and ruined his health for the final time. Jimi mixed drugs and alcohol and choked on his own vomit.
If you want to see Koss blow some peoples' wigs off, look up Free All Right Now Isle of Wight 1970...as an added bonus, you can see Paul Rogers get on the good foot...
It’s hard to pick a favorite solo from Kossoff. If I had a gun to my head it would be the live 70’s version of Fire and Water, it’s killer tone and his famous angry gritty fast vibrato. Hard to choose from his greatness.
Paul didn’t stray from the Box. Much of his licks we’re pretty repetitive-but That being said he mastered the screaming finger vibrato and cranked those old flame tops up to another level! To me-Mike Bloomfield’ in his early years Was much more versatile- as were others like Alvin Lee/Peter Green-but then again were are talking blues rock players from the Decade before Paul took off. I can see his influence on blues players like Joe B and others.
You're dead wrong about his licks being repetitive listen to every solo he never repeats anything the same way twice and he had a more distinctive n emotional vibrato n feel then Mick Alvin n Greeny ...
If you appreciate Paul Kossoff, here's one by Free (Moonshine) that you don't often hear but has a haunting solo that is possibly one of my favourites. ruclips.net/video/lJnNn0h0PUY/видео.html
It's amusing how many know-nothings think they can say something to negate the legacy of a guitarist who was good enough for Paul Rodgers for several years, and who is still considered an important influence on rock guitarists nearly 50 years after his death at 26 years of age. RUclips might as well just post a poll - which is true? A - I appreciate that, like him or not, Paul Kossoff was an interesting and influential guitarist, B - I'm just a dumbass, C - I'm a pentatonic dumbass
It is a track called "Tuesday Morning" from his solo album called "Back Street Crawler" (not to be confused with the band of the same name that he formed later on)
on the one Hand a Genie on the other not able to syncrosise his moves demonstrated by his Father it´s sad his selfdestruction with drugs an for what ? complett voodoo not to understand 25 years .... RIP
Hoo Doo Woman - Back Street Crawler (Band) Goin' Down Slow - Free Catch A Train - Free The Stealer - Free The Hunter - Free Mr. Big - Free Come Together In The Morning - Free The Band Plays On - Back Street Crawler (Band) Leaves In The Wind - Back Street Crawler (Band) Tuesday Morning - Back Street Crawler (Solo Album)
Honestly I feel like this is pretty generic stuff. The rhythms are so simple and basic, and every solo uses the pentatonic...and not in a very diverse way. This was kinda a letdown
That is what made the man so special for me, he kept it simple, it's what he left out that made his playing what it was. It was all about the feeling and the emotion. If you were aware of his playing then I really don't know what you were expecting here?
You are missing the point. Only guitarists really care about the technical side. It is a bit like discussing which techniques, brushes and paints the great artists used. Interesting to some, unimportant to most.
@@portcullis5622 I outgrew the point moreso than missing it. Idk just doesn't do anything for me. Kinda like highway song by Blackfoot. So damn overrated. It just feels like a mishmash of cliched pentatonic licks.
@@Dad-Gad what are some things we can agree on? First of all he uses pentatonic runs, they're not as clever as someone like Gilmore or Blackmore (not even close haha). second of all, there's a note at the beginning that's just out of tune and sounds kind he never had planned out in his head.
No one comes close to this Genius.
3 words. Total bloody legend.
This guy could get vibrato out of a lead pipe.
Hahahaha... spot on mate !!!
47 years on and the music is still very fresh, one hell of a guitarist and one hell of a band!
The best to ever do it. He could get more out of one note than anyone I’ve ever heard. Emotional playing is something very few can do. He had it in spades
Just another , mick taylors better
Paul kossoff was the greatest may he rest in peace
Number one, MISSED DEARLY. CLEAN RIFFS,,,HE THE BEST
Simply the best vibrato ever...period!
There’s a unique quality to his playing - melancholic and full of feeling. Ive loved his playing since I was 16 and got the Fire and Water album….
Still my favourite guitarist of all time
Been a fan since the seventies, “going down slow” with the guitar solo and paul on vocals, best British blues ever recorded!!!
Agree. Favourite Free track
dude had such terrific phrasing and that vibrato is the stuff of legends
When I think of Kossoff, his solo on MR. BIG immediately comes to mind !!! SO BEAUTIFUL !
This guy wore every note on his face. Real deal soul player. Who needs structure when you can feel it.
Kossoff was absolutely a guitar hero... The Vibrato King🎸 😉🤘🏻👍🏻
No one like Kossoff. LOVE this video.

"Come Together In The Morning" nails it for me.Been listening to that track since the 70's and it still sends a chill up my spine. 7mins 28 sec in.
Me too. Wonderful.

Agreed

Come together in the morning - where the note splits and the molten gold pours out.... ooooooooh!
YES! Been listening to that song for four decades and it still gives me a shiver!
Love all what he's done
i haven't found no word to describe the huge energy and feeling i got from paul kossoff!he was the best guitar player in my heart!
THE man. King Koss. Ah haway man the Hunter from Free live recorded in my hometown such memories.

Mr. Paul Francis Kossoff Criminally Underrated
⚡️🔥🎸⚡️🔥🎸⚡️🔥🎸⚡️🔥🎸⚡️🔥🎸⚡️
Pure guitar bliss!!! What a talent!!!
Koss the fucking boss...the only one who get get as much out of one note was b.b.
Good selection of Kossoff nuggets; particularly like the extract from Tuesday Morning, pity he didn't develop that jazzy jam style further.
So appreciated what you put together. Thanks for sharing. cheers lefty
Paul Kossoff, Tommy Bolin, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, and a cast of hundreds of superbly talented victims of addictions.
Glad you added Rory...
Also Alvin Lee and Johnny Winter

Rory's Liver failure was caused by Paracetamol
But not Jimi. That was an unfortunate accident.
Thanks for this video!
Angus may have been inspired by Koss.
Both have great vibrato
It's written all over his playing
Saw him along With Free obviously at a cloud 9 Peterborough wentworth St in the 70 s .
PAUL AN A LES PAUL COULD DO IT ALL IN A NOTE,,HE IS THE BEST..MISS HIM DEARLY. FROM TEX.WESS

THE LEGEND ! 🙏🙏🎸🎸
A great Master
His father, the actor David Kossoff, used to tour this anti-drug monologue about Paul around the schools: ruclips.net/video/PbAgk73b9rc/видео.html
Not another guitarist to touch him. Best in the world IMO......Why did he go so early.....What have we all missed??????
Love woman and broad daylight and little bit off love koss less is more🎸
This is lovely tbh
I love his simplicity. Balls and vibrato
This is brilliant! Thank you so much.
