    Used to spend every weekend, fridays & saturdays listening to bands like this. Every weekend there would be a couple of quality bands playing in town that you could go see for 50-75p!!! Honest. God how lucky we were without ever realising it to witness real music being made and played. How great was that atmosphere in the dark, smoky clubs and pubs where we watched in awe some of the greatest musicians of their time. You really couldn't explain to anyone today just how great it was back then.

    Great singer, great guitarist, two pauls ... so many emotions, I know and love them for more than 40 years. They are part of me, of my life, I can't help, heroes of my youth ... and still there at the same level: pure gold ... I'm melting away, flying high and feeling desperately FREE ... being your friend forever !!!! Lionheart ;)))

    Just brilliant totally BRILLIANT! I saw Free play in Sunderland & Newcastle City Hall (which has great accoustics) people 4get how amazing kossoff was his sound was unique, so so sorrowful he died so young, think what he wud have been like now. Also R.I.P. to th great Andy Frazer who died last yr or 2018, an Ace of Bass was andy, it was his bass that made Free instantly recognisable. Gone to jam wth Kossoff in that great superband in th sky

    Paul had the best vibrato of all time. He REALLY knew how to express himself on that beautiful sounding Les Paul! He wasn't the fastest soloist, nor the most technical, but his feel and sometimes aggression on guitar are unmatched! One of the best of all time and I salute thee! Thank You for the memories and Rest in Peace Paul! Still missing you!

      I used to love fast shredding guitar work like Vai, Paul Gilbert, etc, but it really started to bore me.
      None of that fast stuff comes anywhere close to the feel of Kossoff's playing, dude could say more with a single note than any shred guitarist could ever do, this is coming straight from Paul's soul, simply beautiful.

    A grey day turns my mind away
    To places past and gone
    Broken hearted dreams I’ve seen
    Broken hearted dreams I’ve dreamed
    But there’s a big low song
    Keeps a pushing me along
    Day by day
    On and on
    And there’s a sound like molten gold
    Keeps a burning to my soul
    To my soul
    A grey day thoughts of yesterday
    To faces past and gone
    Sounds to me like I should be
    Oh I should be on my way...
    Lyrics by Paul Kossoff

    Its bull shit that without dope musicians arent as effective or artistic or expressive as they would be if they were loaded....BULL SHIT!!.... Koss is a perfect example. His playing withered away as his addiction took over his humanity.... You could actually see it in his eyes...Its heartbreaking..RIP...Tommy Bolin was another perfect example... RIP... Its the big lie of artists that their expressiveness and creativity are sooooooo much more "in tune" when high.... pppffffff..... Drugs have killed so many people....Its a cryin shame...

SHorty after that gig they (Back Street Crawler) the band were due to play in Hyde Park with the likes of Broughton,Kevin Ayers, and a bunch of other greats, sadley Paul died on the plane back from the states. I remember "OUT DEMONS OUT" though. Edgar Broughton our Welsh cousins were magic.

    This song is originally on Paul Kossoff's solo album named Backstreet Crawler not to be confused with the band Backstreet Crawler (Kossoff was a member). It is frequently confused as Free because it is on some Free anthologies and because Paul Rodgers is the lead vocalist on this track. I'm not sure but I do not think that Andy Fraser or Simon Kirke play on the track. I could be mistake though.

    Free are my all time favourite band of all time. Koss' guitar work, although not as technical as some, is pure emotion, and indeed molton gold. i wish i was born earlier so i could have seen the original free, instead of being doomed to be tormented with generic 'sing in a regional accent' indie bands.
    this band will never be topped

  • @KeithTheKing
    @KeithTheKing 17 лет назад +1

    The world's most soulful notes, and vibrato. It was all about soul with Koss. He was so real, and dealing with a fake superficial business that he imploded. Sad, but inevitable.
    No offence to JR, but this mix would have been better without Jess Roden singing the low parts.

      Bullshit. Paul Kossoff was a natural, gifted talent. Every bit of live concert footage out there, at least from Free's early performances, shows Paul in a completely lucid state, with full control of his faculties, feeling every note he played. If they were on anything for these shows, I would guess maybe a bit of weed is all, which lots of us did back then. To attribute any of his ability on the guitar to drugs is just crap. It breaks my heart that drugs destroyed his ability to play, then ultimately took his life. Nothing to joke about. :'(

    • @gill8779
      @gill8779 4 года назад

      @@thirdday07 Yes he was very talented & was trained in classical guitar. Unfortunately drugs were part of his life (pills) from a very early age. His father talks about it in the tour that he did called 'The late great Paul'. It is now on youtube & very interesting & also very sad. The book Heavy load is also a good read for Free fans.
