      Almost as if they were doing it on purpose. We don't know the person's intentions but it could range from being an activist for AI at one end all the way to exposing flaws with the contest itself by trying to embarrass the people running it. I would also not even be surprised if it's none of that because people unironically not trying to hide their stupidity do exist. There are people who truly think rules don't apply to them. Maybe they didn't even read them.

    • @Stratelier
      @Stratelier 6 месяцев назад +5

      _(edit: updated with more context)_
      To be fair, this was only round 1 of 3 (top 300 -> top 100 -> final winners), and the contest rules state that everyone reaching this point must meet certain additional verification requirements (or they will be removed and alternates picked to fill the spots). By the time things proceed to the final round (in August-September), it is not the job of _those_ judges to screen final entries for compliance with contest rules, in part because they are not allowed to know who submitted each piece (in case it might skew the judging).

    • @eliteunicorns
      @eliteunicorns 6 месяцев назад +22

      @@Stratelier I didn't say it was the job of the judges, I said someone lol. I'm more just surprised that such a large company as Pokemon and it's associates don't have anyway to verify people. Having a separate panel of people to screen all enters would be ideal and would put less strain on the judges.

    • @Dooger414
      @Dooger414 6 месяцев назад +11

      @@Stratelier Sounds like these judges suck. They had no idea it was AI generated. So if you have judges with no eye for art... send them a crayon drawing. They don't deserve art with actual effort if they can't even identify higher quality.

      @@Dooger414the opinion of someone who isn’t an artist is more important than the opinion of an artist when it comes to ratings.

    • @Stratelier
      @Stratelier 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@Dooger414 Apparently the judging panel mostly includes high-level company officials (and is literally posted on the website).
      For now, it's worth mentioning that _only_ the top 300 ("quarterfinal") judging has taken place currently. There will be a top 100 ("semifinal") judging round coming up soon, with a final judging round (to declare the actual winners) one month after that. The official rules also structure out a variety of eligibility/contact requirements that will be taking place during this time, and if for any reason someone fails to meet those requirements they will be removed from the contest and an alternate selected in their stead.
      So TPC's current response concerning some entrants violating contest rules is more or less a stock response, but at least acknowledges that they've heard some of the criticisms revealed so far.
      The contest does not have an official rule against generative AI _specifically,_ but does have the intuitive rule that entries must generally be "created by you" which could be interpreted either way.

    AI is a paradox. I recently helped one women with her short essay. I was translating and correcting [basically fixing] an entire essay that was AI generated and AI translated, because it was so bad. And you know what was the essay about? It was about how good AI is. Right now artist are debunking and fixing AI "art", because it's bad. So why bother creating AI, if humans have to fix everything it does? It creates more problems than opportunities.

    • @pat4005
      @pat4005 5 месяцев назад +3

      Also, then the "fixed" ai generated art, is then promoted by the person or company that paid for it, as ai "art".
      No one is told about the part of the process where a real human artist was called-in the "fix" the ai abomination!
      That information is kept under wraps, and I am sure that if those ai fixes are paid for by an agency (such as an advertising agency, organization, or institution), that the real human artist has to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
      So that entire process protects the ai-generated "art" from being seen as the Frankenstein that it actually is!
      AND to the uninitiated, the "suits", and the companies paying the agencies for the ad work, it makes ai-generated art appear just-as-good as if a real human artist was used, and no one will ever be the wiser, and know the truth that it was NOT READY to be used, but had to be fixed and corrected first!

      It has "soul", which is an intangible and hard to describe factor that is felt rather than seen. One thing I notice is that AI work is explosively seductive, it grabs the attention quickly but it's short lived. We move on quite easily. But a human made drawing is like an ongoing tune that keeps resonating, and it has nothing to do with the skill level of the artist. Even a child drawing often emanates this sensation. That's what I call "soul", the philosopher Walter Benjamin called it "aura". It's not about the name but about being in tune with that and art.

    I feel like art contests should be treated more like cosplay craftsmanship contests. For those, a lot of them have you talk about your costume, show all of the references/ sketches and such of the costume you made, as well as the bts of you making each part of the costume you are wearing for the competition.
    Art contests should have you include your wips, rough and final sketches, lineart, flats, etc. It would easily discourage and quickly take out these so called “artist” that lack the desire to hone the skill of actually learning to create art in any way.

    Debunking a bunch of common AI bro arguments:
    "AI generated images are just as legitimate as actual art." No, they aren't because you didn't make the image. And no, plopping a bunch of text into a bar to make an amalgamation of likely plagiarized images does not count either. AI is a tool for legitimate artists to test out what their ideas may look like before finally drawing it themselves, it does not produce art itself.
    "If you don't want your art put through an AI database, then don't post it on the Internet!" There's this thing called intellectual property. Doing so without artist's permission is not only immoral, it is probably illegal as well. Also, please tell me then why I see so many watermarks from the obviously pilfered artists if this is a non- issue?
    "It's not NFT's 2, Bro! AI will replace all artists!" Obvious copium aside, it very much is. When businesses see how ugly and unpopular AI generated images are, they're going to drop it, and all companies pushing this fad are going to die out. You will never replace human art, no matter how hard you ignorant techbros try, and AI art will never even be comparable to human made art because AI is incapable of feeling, and art is supposed to evoke emotion.
    "Stop straw manning me!" It's not fallacious if it's true.
    My final question for you AI bros is why aren't you trying to use AI to take over the menial labor like retail or warehouse management instead of parasitizing the creative arts that people would rather see be made by actual human beings?

    For a competition like this the judges will more then likely only get to view the image itself and none of the artists details, this means a judge can view what they are seeing rather then potentially give a biased judgement if they happen to recognise an artist. However if this becomes a regular thing then we could soon see competitions being run by a double panel, the first panel will be weeding out potential AI created pieces with the second panel actually doing the judging.

    I'm not aware of the actual submission process for the Pokemon TCG competition, but all art competitions should have a mandatory file upload of proof showing that the artwork was made by hand (i.e timelapse video, video showing the various layers in their art application or a photo of their physical canvas if they decided to paint physically etc.)
    I know its easy for an AI user to just hide the original image if they went to the effort of tracing it over, but I personally think its easier to filter it out than a thousand different unknowns that all need their own time and effort just to verify that it was genuine.
    Again, the people running these competitions NEED to put ACTUAL artists in charge who know how to judge an artwork for its genuine handcraftsmanship and value, rather than just the fact that it 'looks good' from face value.

    The thing about fake art is that it wasn't made or worked for, the thing about art isn't that it's a pretty picture but someone's imagination come to life. Someone imagined it, and they worked hard to bring their idea into the physical world for all to see and enjoy. Although fake art may seem good, it's not the same. Drawing takes ideas, imagination, effort and the work you'll put in order to make it visible for the world to see. The progress is what makes art what it is, and the better you get the better you are at replicating your imagination. It doesn't matter what level you're at, as most artists have the same goal, to create. And that goal is what they'll work towards, whether one person scribbles, or another draws realism, cartoony, anime, abstract, no mind is the same, and each unique artist who creates is one of a kind. That's why it's special, or at least that's what makes it special to me.

    It bothers me why art, photography, animation was the first things people thought of “We should have AI do it”. I wish AI was used more for like boring household chores like dishes, laundry, etc. If I machine cut down my household responsibilities, I could have more time to do art

    • @liampugh
      @liampugh 5 месяцев назад +5

      As someone whose radically anti-AI I do think it’s important to understand what we’re against.
      Content created by generative AI actually doesn’t use any “percent” of the stolen works. It’s more accurate to think of the stolen training data as sources of inspiration it can pull from. In fact even the biggest nerds out there still don’t understand the complexities of how AI learns and processes things. It’s just input, what might as well be mystery magic, and then output.
      It’s still stolen, and it’s still wrong, but understanding the enemy is crucial if we ever want to win.

      @@saturnking-il4fp while some are admittedly pretty funny. Yes I am against those as well. Generative AI will destroy human culture if we don’t stop it first, and unfortunately that includes the fun and goofy uses of it that are relatively harmless.
      From a tech standpoint I still think it’s all really cool and interesting, I just already know artists my age who are quitting and giving up and I can’t even imagine how this is affecting the younger generation of artists who should be finding their skill/passion right now.
      I guarantee you there are some insanely talented kids out there who should be growing up to be the next Chris Nolan or Lady Gaga but instead they’ve chosen not to pursue music, writing, film, art, etc…. Because they’re growing up in a world where AI does it for them and companies would rather use that AI instead of hiring artists. So they never become the great artists they were destined to be.
      Artists everywhere are already losing their jobs. The end has already started.

    Solution: Art competitions should require speed paint videos or proof of the creation process. Something AI would have a very difficult time replicating. Sure it could TRY to generate a speed paint video, but the way the brush strokes and logical progression of a painting or drawing is conducted throughout the video would make it VERY clear if it were done with AI or by human hands...

    I know people say that AI steals from other artists but has anyone noticed as of late that the general look of AI seems to fall within a very narrow 'style'? It's like, you can ask a generator for anything but it is only capable of giving you that in a set style it seems unable to break out of, resulting in the fast trend of AI being 'easy' to spot not because of errors but because it's legit the same shit over and over again.
    Same colors, same lighting, same weird glossy look. It's really just taking basic poses but putting on a 'default' coloring style and it's already getting boring.
    So remember starting artist; you still have an advantage over AI for the basic ability to be able to move away from a fucking default.

    This reminds me of a AI-generated art in a poster for an art competition here in Serbia back in April this year. The people who made the poster clearly used AI, as evidenced by the messed up fingers and some other details. I have an image of the poster, taken with my phone when I saw the poster in my former school. Judging by it, the competition had the participants come to the location where it was taking place and actually drawing stuff.

    A person by the name of "Weihang Ye" still has two Pikachu pieces of AI art in the competition.
    One of them shows a Van Gogh style Pikachu sleeping. Upon looking at the entries, I saw it immediately.
    I have generated image prompts of Van Gogh style using AI before, and it always tends to do the swirls the same way. A think the people who judge should see the signs better and Weihang Ye should also be disqualified. Keep in mind, I am not hating artists either. I too am one, degree and all, and messed around with generations to see what I could come up when it comes to prompts. I did not enter this, nor would I have had the time to and even less likely I would pass AI off as art, being an artist. But I did look at the entries, after 300 finalists were chosen. Such a huge loss to very talented individuals who could have made it in.
