gary trains his pokemons much better than him and understands type advantage. The battle b/w blastoise and charizard was purely plot armour and bs, gary had than win in his bag.
One last act of Gary being him, when Ash was riding high off of clearing the Battle Frontier (where he defeated multiple Legendary Pokémon for the first time), Gary bumped into Ash at his house after he came back from a quick trip to Sinnoh. They had a little reunion battle: Gary proceeds to show off his new Electivire, a Pokémon Ash has never seen or fought before, and cleanly reminds him that in this world, you might feel like the best, but you can still be bested.
Funny thing Gary started giving Goh, Ash’s friend from Pokémon Journeys a hard time. I think it was because he felt Goh wasn’t worthy of Being Ash’s companion.
Gary is such an icon, people back in the day didn't even call the game version of him Blue. You have to be some type of different to roll up in a car full of women too old for you. Bro is living Brock's dream. His rivalry with Ash is remembered not for the battles (cause let's be honest there's only really the one) but for how this man lived rent free in Ash's and anyone else watching's head. If that don't make him a GOAT, don't know what does.
Paul is the actual GOAT. Not only did he live rent free in Ash's head throughout the entirety of Sinnoh but he was consistently shown to be a strong trainer from the start. Heck, Elekid tied with the same Pikachu that one-shotted a Regice while it was still a Baby Pokemon. With Gary, we're told that he's a strong trainer but don't really see it until Giovanni. And even after that, Gary got bodied by a random trainer in the Pokemon League. If it came down to a battle between Gary and Paul, Paul would win. Maybe not easily but he would win.
The reason Ash didn't use Pikachu is cause he didn't reach powerhouse status yet and Ash actually wanted to use his bigger sized pokemon to counter Gary's power types. This backfired when the latter sent out Scizor and got blizted
you see, in the game you're the only one with the save time travel superpowers but in the anime, everyone have the power to stop time and never age so it's equalise the battlefield a little bit.

I named him Gary one time just to tie him closer to the anime, got the Seismic Toss TM, and beat him at the end to increase Gary's lose streak against Seismic Toss to 3.
Hot Take: Gary did not become a good rival until Johto. We barely see him do anything in Kanto other that brag about how great he is. However, he never backs this up, losing the first battle we see him in against Giovanni. In the Indigo league, Ash lasted longer than he did. Gary loses in the qualifiers while Ash at least makes it to the round of 16. The anime would rather tell us that Gary is hot shit than actually SHOWING him have a meaningful rivalry with Ash. Even Trip got more than that.
Heh, I remember an obscure Johto episode called 'Enlighten Up', which was basically the OG trio [and Team Rocket] go to a Pokemon temple and the person who worked there stated Gary came there earlier not only to study and meditate, but do some extreme challenge, which then riled Ash up to try it caused she said the big man himself passed flawlessly. (Dude did some serious soul-searching after those Kanto losses, but always overachieving.)
Gary still ended up totally showing off in the end, because in the anime he ended up making a somewhat viable career out of his interests, since he became a Pokemon researcher, while Ash Ketchum on the other hand kept trying to do battles but never winning anything important, so Ash Ketchum basically tried going to esports route, while Gary freaking Oak already had a career with no risks at age 10, that he could do even if he became as old as his grandfather, while Ash on the other hand still needed to find something to do that was stable.
@RyoKasai25 No. Ash has won a couple of things in his time as a trainer, but the most he could have gotten out of it, could be a little fame, and maybe some prize money, but I don't recall they ever saying that they earned money out of it, so its possible that they don't even earn anything, and that might be the reason why Ash's brokeass, took such a long time to repay Misty for her bike, where in the end if I recall correctly, it was the Pokemon Center's Nurse Joy at one of the towns in the Kanto region, that ended up fixing Misty's bike, and as a result it was the reason why Misty stopped journeying with Ash by the Hoenn region, since she no longer had the excuse to tag along as Ash owed her the bike. The most that Ash can do one day, is possibly open up a Gym somewhere, and that is if they actually pay Gym leaders for their work, or maybe if hes lucky at a Battle Frontier or Tower or whatever else they may have, that requires trainers to battle, but thats not a future that sounds stable.
Here’s fact. In the novel, ‘Pocket Monsters: The Animation.’ It states that aside from being Professor Oak’s grandson, Gary is also the grandnephew of Pallet Town’s mayor. That fight overall was the definition of plot armor. Charizard somehow beating both golem & blastoise (golem getting 1 hit ko) and then heracross beating magmar. Loved the fight but the anime really pulled some strings to let ash win
@@EWOODJ but this instance actually was plot armor. A charizard beat a blastoise. A fire type somehow beat a water type. Not even that a charizard somehow beat a golem, with 1 hit. The golem hadn’t fought yet so he was fully healed and I’m assuming a decent level since it’s a fully evolved mon. And even worse a charizard withstood a powerful magnitude. Usually by game logic it wouldn’t affect a Pokémon that is flying but charizard was on the ground, it should have weaken him a ton and 1 hit from blastoise would’ve gotten him. It was plot armor
Let's not forget how awesome it was seeing him at the end of the Battle Frontier with an Electivire & working on becoming a Pokemon Researcher like Oak. That had me so hyped for Diamond & Pearl.
The ironic part is that Gary's starter Blastoise has a type disadvantage against Ash's starter since Electric does beat water and he still. Thinks he's better even though he chose the starter who's weak to pikachu
Brock truly was moving different in the early series. He remembered that Gary lost the Indigo League cause of Seismic toss, called up to get Charizard back.
Nah bro you got to do a video SOLELY ON ASH'S SNORLAX!! That pokemon is definitely built different! Especially in the battle frontier when it used 6 MOVES!!!
7:50 Oh yeah, in the anime there are more than the standard eight badges in every region, they just don't explicitly show most of them. For example there's the Kaz & Yaz Gyms that we see in the episode "Showdown in Dark City", and it's established that the're legit gyms since we see the Marowak trainer fighting one of their Pokemon in the episode "Bad to the Bone".
17:27 silly Gary, everyone knows that Malicious Moonsault (Incineroar’s Z-Move) is a dark type move so of course it failed to despose of a fighting type Pokémon
Sadly Gary beat ash ass and retired before ash get back tbh I was confuse when I saw Gary being Nice and then switch up I can’t tell if he has some kinda split personality or not he really throwing me off
are we not gonna comment on how gary pulled up after ash got back from just beating the battle frontier and then cooked ash in a 1v1 with his ACE Pikachu
Thanks for this video of Gary Oak. Ever since I watched reruns of Pokemon on Boomerang years back, I'd always be eager to see what this dude was up to.
One thing that was interesting in Journeys was that Gary returned for Project Mew and was back on his gen 1 timing when interacting with Goh, just without the squad of women figuratively meatriding him. It's revealed at some point that Gary basically acts above anyone he sees potential in because he wants to rile them up and help them reach that potential. This retcon could explain why he started to soften up on Ash. The kid was finally starting to reach that potential. That or he started to swing that way in Johto which hey I don't judge (relax this last part is a joke).
Hmm, it's not so much a retcon, but rather something that kinda got lost in translation with the dub when they focused VERY hard on Gary's jerkiness. It largely faded out by the time the rivalry ended, as Gary gave a few pushes and pep talks to Ash afterwards pre-Journeys.
@@natalimoina I meant more that some of Gary's lines were changed early on in the dub that made his character seem more one-note, mainly in Kanto. (Another thing was how Brock and Misty acted towards him initially.) It definitely changed by Johto.
I didn't remember early Johto Gary being like that, my memories basically went from Kanto straight to Johto league, and damn hella glow up after losing the car and fan club.
Let’s not forget that Gary got Ash’s Original Starter Pokémon. Because when Ash arrived at Professor Oak his first choice was SQUIRTLE! So not only Gary is driving around and disrespecting Ash but he’s doing it while having the Starter that Ash wanted

0:43 I don't remember this from the anime 💀
0:40 5:47 6:33 7:41 😂
Gary is so trash that he manages to lose a battle against a Charizard while he had a Blastoise. He was all hype, no action.
all bark no bite fr
That fight overall was the definition of plot armor. Charizard somehow beating both golem & blastoise (golem getting 1 hit ko) and then heracross beating magmar. Loved the fight but the anime really pulled some strings to let ash win
@@Dark-Wolf27 Other trainers do it all the time. It’s only pLot ArMoR when Ash does it. People just love using that term, it’s holds no water.
@@Dark-Wolf27FACTS. I fucking hate watching that episode because of that soul reason.
It was plot armor
i havent watched pokemon in like a decade but i cant get enough of these videos lmao
9:22 damn professor oak. You didn’t have to do Ash like that lol😂
8:24 I just realized Gary got an umbreon to counter mewto
Dang fr 😂
Let's not forget how awesome it was seeing him at the end of the Battle Frontier with an Electivire & working on becoming a Pokemon Researcher like Oak. That had me so hyped for Diamond & Pearl.
The ironic part is that Gary's starter Blastoise has a type disadvantage against Ash's starter since Electric does beat water and he still. Thinks he's better even though he chose the starter who's weak to pikachu
Gary carried at least 10 bands in his wallet, with that type of money he dont give a fuck😭👏
Gary chose first and pikachu wasn’t an option. It was by coincidence his starter is weaker. He could’ve chosen charmander or bulbasaur too
Ah yes because Gary Oak is psychic and new Ash was going to choose Pikachu.
17:56 my guy just threw this in there lol
“This isn’t a party, this is a daycare” took me out
Ay
nobody could've even touched that Mewtwo.
Garry / blue is him
Don't forget green
@@daizonsmith8627 I will never call him green , green is technically a different character that is female
Yellow?
@@MangoMann072 yellow is a character?
@@fatedreal pretty sure they popped up in the adventures manga
Bro lost to Giovanni so hard his entire character changed lmao
Brock truly was moving different in the early series. He remembered that Gary lost the Indigo League cause of Seismic toss, called up to get Charizard back.
16:42 professor Oak's reaction was hella funny
this was very entertaining. a walk down memory lane and your memes and delivery had me howling , good stuff man.
18:06 I don't wanna be that dude... but we did see him as a squrtle in the 4th episode
18:24 low key could stop laughing that edit was perfect
YEAH LMAOOOOO that dog face with the mask was funny as shiii
The whole show we see the difference between garys maturity and ashs maturity.
This brudda built different in every calibre 😂😂
cruising around kanto in a rari for what 🤣🤣
7:56 he has 3 OFFICAL badges (cascade boulder rainbow), but some can be unnofical gym badges like A,Js gym
17:57 That was awfullynclose to "heracross is that strong because he sucks the sap out of my wood" 💀
Missed opportunity
0:46 bro got a lil too much pride in himself😭
"They'd be more wanted than Diddy" was wild
"girls are mean" Ash that one episode: "GET A NEW LIFE!"
Nah bro you got to do a video SOLELY ON ASH'S SNORLAX!! That pokemon is definitely built different! Especially in the battle frontier when it used 6 MOVES!!!
Gary being the definition of Black airforce activities for no reason bro
"cuz i'm here for problems" lmaoo
i knew something was wrong with me when i liked gary as a kid. dude had the car, girls, and nepotism lol
“We catching repeats?! Major aura deduction!”
Meanwhile Ash with 30 Tauros
7:50
Oh yeah, in the anime there are more than the standard eight badges in every region, they just don't explicitly show most of them.
15:03 Yo movie Ash moved even more extreme💀😂
Imagine all of Ash's companions seeing Ash & Gary during the Kanto/Johto journey?
3:56 Aint no way they just ignore caterpie
Fucking hilarious 😂 The commentary makes the nostalgia of watching these scenes so much better
Instant classic video
If Ash is Mickey then Gary is Donald Duck. He isn't the main character but damn he deserve that disney logo on him as well
The evolutionnof Ash and Gary's from rivals to friends nice stryline.Gary should have had more battles
6 quick attacks in a row 😂😂😂
ngl the team rocket pull up on a normal run off any pokemon player would be just a comedy relief
I really wish Ash’s Pikachu got a rematch with Gary’s umbreon
Sadly Gary beat ash ass and retired before ash get back tbh I was confuse when I saw Gary being Nice and then switch up I can’t tell if he has some kinda split personality or not he really throwing me off
21:44 this mj clip got me in tears bruhhhh
are we not gonna comment on how gary pulled up after ash got back from just beating the battle frontier and then cooked ash in a 1v1 with his ACE Pikachu
I wish u went over how he cooked Ash so bad he had to go to the region the pokémon was from 😂
I am always glad to see more Gary. He is the early "him", you can say.
Thanks for this video of Gary Oak. Ever since I watched reruns of Pokemon on Boomerang years back, I'd always be eager to see what this dude was up to.
Profile picture checks out 100%
@@fenixchief7 hahahhaha
I didn't remember early Johto Gary being like that, my memories basically went from Kanto straight to Johto league, and damn hella glow up after losing the car and fan club.
gary: cheats and only cares about winning.ash: trains his pokemon all the way up and is strategetic and wins honourably.
Gary cheats?
Ash is the fucking cheater?
Bro didn't even get half of his badges properly
Ash's pikachu beat an onix with an electric type move
Gary caught an alpha krabby before we knew what alpha pokemon were
Let’s not forget that Gary got Ash’s Original Starter Pokémon. Because when Ash arrived at Professor Oak his first choice was SQUIRTLE! So not only Gary is driving around and disrespecting Ash but he’s doing it while having the Starter that Ash wanted
