Hi, I’m an audio engineer (not professionally, but have done it for 10+ years and I studied it) Primarily, the best way to attain the super high pitch he’s getting in those high vocals is just to eq the ranges you don’t want out of the mix. In audio a typical rule of thumb is to cut things out or peel them back a little, around the sound you want, instead of just boosting the sound you want. Usually done through a mixture of compressions, eq, and in this case it sounds like they’re also using a really short delay to sort of layer a send and a callback on his highs very closely together. But, also, he 100% has to be able to pull off that vocal live, coming from his own body. Engineers can only work with what they’re given. This man is a monster. I also agree with you 100% about that into melody continuing through the song. “Unstoppable” is a great word. It makes me think of Cthulhu, for real. It’s my favorite little bit about this song. The atmosphere it encourages makes a huge difference.
As an extreme vocalist the highs he is getting aren't really all that uncommon in the genre. Those highs or chaotics as some in the genre call them are actually in a lot of ways much easier than getting the low gutterals. The highs, while harder to sustain and do correctly aren't as hard to achieve vs the lows. The gutterals and lows that you hear are achieved by face and mouth shape, basically you are pulling your face back to help open up the throat better, think of when someone does the awkward double chin smile where they pull their chin back as far as they can. Now take those movements and add in breath and control to those low notes and that is where the true talent comes in. While a lot of people applaud the chaotic notes in metal singing, in my opinion it is those lows that are to be applauded.
I had my vocals taped for a demo and the engineer did little to no mixing on them, we just added double layers of lows and highs. I'm using an inspired technique which makes both reach their extremes. It has always been easy for me to reach mid-high screams with a regular technique. Gosh I wish I still had this tape from 15y ago. Basement tapes were so fun :p

The fact that you delineate between video-Julia, caption-Julia, and voiceover-Julia is one of the most charming things about experiencing your videos. :)
What I love about this song is, not only the brutal vocals and epic instrumentals, is the production. The vocals are mixed more evenly with the instruments in some parts instead of way out front. It makes it fall in line and add to the epic music.
Being following Julia for a year now and watching her going from a contemporary singing coach to a connoisseur of hardcore death metal is a journey to enjoy and I do not think that she could have foreseen this herself.
"It's like somebody pulled the plug on a demonic bathtub" 😂. Julia is genuine metal lover in her soul. Bet your still playing this when you drink your morning coffee like the rest of us to get the day off to a good start. "My final breath, swallowed by the womb of death!" 🔥
This is still probably my favorite reaction to any song from any reactor I've watched. Hysterical watching Julia experience Will for first time. Might have seen this one 30 times already
As someone completely unfamiliar with Lorna Shore, the name had me expecting like a female singer/songwriter with a breathy voice singing alongside an acoustic guitar. This is not that.
Ayup! Now there's a challenge, all you "female singer/songwriter with a breathy voice singing alongside an acoustic guitar." .. make a cover of this, keeping the original vocal tone :) For inspiration, check out Alex Terrible & The Russian Hate Project:)
He did a video with a doctor who wanted to check out what his throat is doing and how safe it is. Dude has range and does it safely so he will have longevity.
When I heard this song I actually cried because of how much of a masterpiece it is. No matter what type of music you listen to if you understand how to make music, when you’ve studied sounds, vocals, audio engineering, and everything that could possibly go into making a song and singing and playing instruments and stuff like that….etc this is a fucking masterpiece.
That moment where they shift unexpectedly and “drop the hammer” is called a breakdown… they are the absolute best thing about this style/genre of music 🙌🏻
She needs to hear Shadow of Intent - The Heretic Privails might not be as brutal as this but the vocal skill on display from Ben Duerr is just too good
The big smile and breakdown "anticipation", the light headbanging. She's becoming one of us. Also I envy her, the "roller-coaster" effect of HELP I'M FRIGHTENED and yet you rewind, you want always more of that heavy riffs that have the power of blasting your bad day away. That's rad to see. I watched that video with a smile on my face, she looks happy. I listen to heavy metal for a long time now, and being impressed is something that became rare for me. Still, little diamonds exists with young bold guys doing epic-level shit just like that. Lorna Shore is awesome Jinjer is awesome Slaughter to Prevail and Infant Annihilator and Black Tongue and Bound in Fear are awesome And so much more And you're awesome, Julia ! =D

"Job For A Cowboy - Entombment of a Machine" the song that introduced me to pig squeal, and for me is still the Gold Standard of good sounding/appropriate guttural screaming. I didn't know Lorna Shore, but it brought me right back to the first time I listen to Job For A Cowboy!
No way. Suspended By The Throat is by far the best track on that album. Always living in the shadow of entombment of the machine which IS a good song in its own right but the cadence in "strung up by the neck hole" im paraphrasing is so much juicier IMO
You know what I love about this is that you have a vocal teacher saying how talented his vocals are, it's no different to a singer going from high to low notes in a song. Will is incredible, he's range is unparalleled. The whole band is incredible
10:53 I'd highly recommend watching Trevor Teichert's One take live vocal cover of this song, He's an insane vocalist and pulls it off amazingly, it'll give you a clearer visual and audio on how these vocals are performed in a more live setting

DO A COLLAB WITH KARDAVOX ACADEMY, HE IS A METAL VOCAL TEACHER AND YOU COULD MAYBE DO A METALCORE SONG
REACT TO SOME POLARIS WITH KARDAVOX ACADEMY THAT'S SUCH A GREAT IDEA
Im here for it..
WHY ARE WE SCREAMING?!
Yes
@@Nathan-dn4zl How do u know he's not doing this in pig noises
Me too. For the first five seconds, anyhow...
Weren't expecting the hell goblin xD
Underrated comment. Has me cackling like a goblin.
Ayup! Now there's a challenge, all you "female singer/songwriter with a breathy voice singing alongside an acoustic guitar." .. make a cover of this, keeping the original vocal tone :) For inspiration, check out Alex Terrible & The Russian Hate Project:)
You're not in Kansas anymore
Plot twist, her and Liz have been getting lessons from Mark and she covers this at the end
The name of the vocal coach supergroup is "Demonic Pig Vacuum"
I like how the vocal coach reaction community is all metalheads 🤘
It is NOW. Good work metalheads! 🤘🤘👻🤘🤘
Seems a great strength of this music is dynamic range. If Beethoven was around now he'd be doing this.
Breakdown is the best yes but if you're stuck in 2008
She needs to hear Shadow of Intent - The Heretic Privails might not be as brutal as this but the vocal skill on display from Ben Duerr is just too good
The man’s vocal range is amazing
yepppp
Second this, Ben has disgusting range and maybe the best control in all of Deathcore
@@einarmadillo3626 Oh, hands down Ben is the best. The breakdown alone as like 4 or 5 techniques if I remember correctly.
Lorna Shore is awesome
Jinjer is awesome
Slaughter to Prevail and Infant Annihilator and Black Tongue and Bound in Fear are awesome
And so much more
And you're awesome, Julia ! =D
This reaction was amazing. Your enthusiasm and just everything you put into this. There wasn't any negative judgement, none of the usual reactions we get from others that don't have direct connection to metal (if that makes any sense). Thank you for such a refreshing reaction and video.
Welcome to the metal family! We're happy to have you! 🤘🏼 Thank you for your reactions and breakdowns of each sound and technique, they are absolutely incredible!
Love watching your face, the whole way through, and not just because you are gorgeous. Your surprise and shock expressions just show how most of us felt on the first listen...honestly second, third and every subsequent listen as well. I liked CJ in Lorna Shore, I am loving Will in Lorna Shore. What a vocalist!
Sweet, innocent Julia turned into a blackmetaller... the "damage" is done. There's no turning back. ;-)
Once u go Black...
@@TheChzoronzon Yeah! P.S. Based on your nickname I guess you know the band Akercocke right ? :-)
@@matteogiberti3297 Nopi.
I'm a 50 y.o. tard that has just returned to metal through Jinjer (original, isn't it?) after a decade of almost total absence.
But ey, good recommendation, strikes me as some darkened Dog Fashion Disco, so... yay! I'll explore more of them certainly.
(btw, my nick is a nerdy joke between Yahtzee's mythos and ole Aleister coloring his buggering trips to the desert, I'm afraid haha)
@@TheChzoronzon Happy you mentioned Dog Fashion Disco! Love 'em (I have their complete discography on CD). Jinjer are gonna play next month here in Italy the day after Epica, not sure if I can go but I'll try... P.S. You're not much older than me... :-)
@@matteogiberti3297 They're gonna play here in Spain too, but getting tickets is quite the feat, argh
At least I already got mine for Igorrr in November... tho I just heard its 2 vocalist are gonne, and for lame reasons, sigh... et tu, Laure?
If you like DFD (and surely Mr Bungle too...) you must know Clowncore, am I right?
The singer of this band actually did a solo session in the studio of this song on his youtube channel he has also proved his self many times over. His voice is 100% genuine
I'm a pretty hard-core metalhead but this song made me feel like I need a long prayer and a confession lmao
This is easily one of the best ''atmospheric deathcore'' songs I've ever heard. Actually, maybe one of the best deathcore songs full stop. I'm usually more into the oldschool deathmetal stuff, or maybe some atmospheric black metal but this, this is absolutely up there.
I like how she shows intuitively that the breakdowns are enjoyable as hell, even as a relative newbie to extreme metal. Props.
Your energy and presence throughout is awesome and extremely appreciated. Your insight and your thoughts are extremely solid and also eye opening, teaching us, at least me, some things about vocal technique (I’m a guitarist, just love the song)
And your reaction was epic, thank you. Please do more you’re so awesome
He toured live with Lorna Shore a while back as their fill-in vocalist, on youtube if you really do want to see him live (spoiler: he's just as insane live)
Will did a one take vocal playthrough for this song its amazing
When I tell you that in concert you can feel everything deep in your chest these guys are an absolute monster in concert best concert ever
Oh god cant wait for your reaction on the ending
I like the moments when Julia wants to hit the pause button, but failes to do so because of deep fascination about what's going on. So epic !
If you want to hear some real goblin vocals, look up Dickie Allen from Infant Annihilator. Their song Blasphemian is unreal
Umm, Nekrogoblikon has entered the chat... And Mortiis
Lol
Throw in some cattle decapitation too
Unholy Gravebirth for me
Travis Ryan would technically be the "real" goblin vocalist 😈
Why I love RUclips. I don't know goblin vocals exist until I see this thread, now have a whole playlist to look up.
It's so cool seeing people enjoy this track as much as I do..especially vocal coaches breaking down and appreciating what will is doing
The feeling of just listening to this is why us metalheads do
its raw power
That drop is what we call breakdown. We all love them
Oh dear lord, oh my sweet child, what have we done!? She was barely ready for Demolisher and now we have this!? RIP Julia
Lol
The "drop" you're referring to is called a breakdown. Their new vocalist is absolute fire! Great review.
This is great. Austin's kick drum is insane.
oh wow! I should have found this a year ago. But I'm hear now! And yours just might be my new favorite Lorna Shore reaction!!! Great job Julia!!! 🖤🤘🤯
LOVE THIS OMG 😂😍
and for the record, i think you would wanna collab with kardavox academy he is a great (harsh) voice coach in youtube if you really are that interested in this kinda sound 😀
She's talked about him in past videos
Mark is a pretty awesome guy!
oh didn't know about that, that's cool, i hope theres some reaction you both do together in future
Really like how even though it's pretty heavy for you, that doesn't distract you from getting into the analysis and it seems you kinda start to feel comfortable with this type of music, you seem to value what people is doing with their art. Love your content! :)
Shadow of intent - The heretic prevails.
Yes 100%
Fuck yeah
This^^^^^^^
@@VicerExciser007 facts what a rollercoaster of a song that is
I love watching how excited you get over this. Will is insane, and is a great addition to this band.
15:26 this is always my favorite part of reactions to this song lmao, because same, same. I've listened to this song hundreds of times, and still... same
I get goosebumps every single time I hear those final breakdowns/vocalizations!... and I have listened to this song quite a few times! Lorna Shore is arguably the best deathcore band at the moment!
I have been waiting weeks for this reaction, was curious how you’d feel about the song in general. But also the variety of vocal techniques he was using throughout
how did it go?
@@jvoxfox exactly as I was hoping it would go. Interesting commentary, and hilarious faces
My first reaction for the end breakdown was laughter. Then I played it back several times, each time was either laughter or tears from it. I couldnt get enough of it. It's so extreme it's almost silly.
14:58 - Having the vocals to do a drop from here, is impressive lol
Yeah will Ramos is all natural and literally demon, the sounds he can produce is unmatched
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW PROUD I AM THAT YOU TRULY ENJOYED IT, LOST YOUR SHIT AND NOTICED EVERYTHING THEY DID... LOVE, YOUR LOVE TO THAT DROP!!! ... :')
Your face throughout these metal reaction videos is the perfect mixture of confusion, curiosity, pain, and enjoyment 😂
Julia. I just LOVE watching your changing facial expressions while you're listening to the various elements of this masterpiece. Dare I say that at times it looked almost like you could be verging on having a Lorna Shore-gasm. 🤣
the universal "Disgusted" face people make to sick metal breakdowns is just lovely.
This is by far my favourite To The Hellfire reaction ever. 🤘
You definitely just listened to peak deathcore, and you totally loved it. As a fellow musician, your description of musical elements is always awesome. Keep it up! Suggestion: Eclipse by Brand of Sacrifice. Lifeblood is also really good.
Jfac are absolutely mint
Yessss oh my childhood!
No way. Suspended By The Throat is by far the best track on that album. Always living in the shadow of entombment of the machine which IS a good song in its own right but the cadence in "strung up by the neck hole" im paraphrasing is so much juicier IMO
PREHEAT PIZZA ROLLS. PREHEAT ALMOST DONE
You know what I love about this is that you have a vocal teacher saying how talented his vocals are, it's no different to a singer going from high to low notes in a song. Will is incredible, he's range is unparalleled. The whole band is incredible
Fun fact, he has been taking lessons for clean vocals from an opera singer in new york. So his range is gonna be absolutely nuts
How far you've come from first hearing Jinjer and the sheer shock that gave you to...this! Really great to see Julia! :)
I swear I watch this video daily, your reactions are perfect at every point, it’s just great.
10:53 I'd highly recommend watching Trevor Teichert's One take live vocal cover of this song, He's an insane vocalist and pulls it off amazingly, it'll give you a clearer visual and audio on how these vocals are performed in a more live setting
I don't know if Julia touched on this, but I was amazed by Will Ramos's time sense. He's super-tight with the band. I had some trouble appreciating this style, until I realized that it's reflecting the darkness in humanity. Are we willing to face and control our baser natures? Great performance and, as always, great reaction, Julia!
The constant look of shock was everyone's first reaction to this lmao. It's so gooooood
The more of these videos I watch, the less you cringe and the more excited you are by the gutterals and growls.
I think you have become a metal head, welcome🤘🏼
One of the best breakdowns of 2021! And by the way the best pigsquel i've ever heard.
