    I’d love to see similar videos like this with other ranges like P3, the Warcolours Nostalgia lines, Vallejo Game Color, etc.
    Your normal reviews are already great, but supplemental ones like this showing some of the “day to day” experiences of using the line on regular painting projects really adds a lot of additional detail and things to think about.

    Maybe I missed something about how AP explained how painters are supposed to understand and use “flexible triad” but in my mind, having things organized by value and hue means you can easily move AROUND the color wheel as well as up and down in value. So if I want to take my green slightly towards blue while I get darker, I can also do that easily. Your point about the value scales being inconsistent across hues does make that not as straightforward, but it’s still doable since they are organized in a gradient scale. I want to see someone make a video where they INTENTIONALLY mix triads to show how analogous color theory works, rather than acting like they have to stick within one hue triad…again, it’s called FLEXIBLE for a reason!!!

      While I don't think you're wrong in that being a good way to look at it for someone familiar with color theory (and I do think that at some point, every painter should get familiar with color theory!), it's called the flexible triad system because you're intended to pick a triad from the 6 available paints in each set. It's meant to be non-intimidating for newer painters who just want to have a highlight and shade picked out for them.

      This is... not entirely accurate when it comes to pigments. The trick with Citadel's range, as well as Army Painter's, Vallejo's etc. is they're made from very few distinct base pigments. A few years ago, I believe that was around 12 or 16 or something (the Artificer Inks were basically their range) which means when you mix them, you're really mostly adjusting ratios and if they're similar you're _rarely_ adding new pigments and so they "blend" well.
      However, if you have two distinct pigments that are of a close hue, mixing them won't necessarily give results you expect. For example, if you mix Cadmium Red with Alizarin Crimson, you end up with a weird darkish mix and not a red in-between that you might expect.

    Rakarth Flesh in particular is a very peculiar paint. There's not a lot of paints like it, so replacing it is a challenge. It's one of the few Citadel paints that I won't replace when my pot runs low.

    I really like this review-like video format: not only is seeing these in action when painting a real mini much more interesting and 'representative' than painting a flat circle base, I also think it's somehow the first time someone is showing off that the paints can mix without issue, which is something I was genuinely worried about.
    Question, though: From what you've tested, are there any colors/swatches from this lineup you'd consider particularly standing out (in a good way)? Colors/shades you don't often see in lineups like Vallejo New Game Color that would be a good addition, filling out a niche/missing hue range, or the exact color to accomplish (something)? I'm always on the lookout for those special colors, like VMC Pale Sand, so I'm interested if you spotted anything like that.

    One of the reasons that the new fanatic range doesn't quite match the colours of other brands, may be because they apparently consciously didn't try. When formulating the colour range they were referring to an open international colour standard system.

I dont use my airbrush that much besides basecoating and a little bit of shading, but I always struggle with it. I recently switched over to use Army Painter Air and I realized it was the Citadel Air paints that were clogging my airbrush. I dont know if its all Citadel Air, but the main one I use for my Eldar army is Khorne Red and its terrible! I didn't realize till I tried another brand, but I'd love to know your opinion, your videos are very helpful and I love your website I've followed for almost 10 years!

    Given that you've pretty much tried every single paint range on the market, it would be really cool if you could make kind kind of an omnibus-like blog or video where you list your favourite paints from each range
    There's a Ninjon video similar to this, where he goes over his 2000 different paints and talks about what to expect from each range and which colors he thinks each range does best, also a similar poorhammer video exists too
    This would be a lot of work, so don't feel like you need to make an hour long video on this, a post on your website would probably be enough, and would help people spend on what's necessary paint wise
    This could be a list of the best widely used specific colours out of all paint ranges, like how pro acryl bold titanium white is often seen as the best white, that you can buy as replacements for weaker paints in a range.
    This could also be the best colours from each range to buy alone that can cover missing colours in some ranges or extend the number of colour options available to you, or maybe a combination with the prior

    Without a doubt, gloss paints are harder to work with if you want to do more than just a solid color. I purchased several bottles of Golden's Fluid Acrylic line because they have colors and single pigments not commonly available -- a true yellow ochre for example, not just yellow mixed with white. They are very good paints with high pigment density and flow well from the brush; however, they are glossy. I didn't realize this until too late. So while their titanium white is one of the smoothest whites available and the gloss factor is manageable, their pyrrole red blinding. I had a very hard time seeing how my highlights were being placed and how effective they were. Even the matte medium they make isn't enough to tone it down. They really are artist paints, not miniature paints.
    I'll still find a way to use them, but I think I am going to try the Liquitex acrylic gouache instead for those specific colors and pigments.

    • @wasmic5z
      @wasmic5z 10 месяцев назад

      Experimenting with artists' paints for miniatures is always fun! I use a lot of oil paints myself. I've even experimented with watercolours too, but that's much more experimental. You have to make sure to only buy the lightfast paints, and also use a good layer of varnish afterwards, but they're actually pretty decent for weathering.

    • @nicholassinnett2958
      @nicholassinnett2958 10 месяцев назад

      I suspect a lot of people who said they prefer satin paints probably paint in a GW style, where it's mainly just flat colours with line highlights and recess shading. If you're prefer painting with more realistic/volumetric lighting like me though, then matter paints are better by far IMO, since they just fight against the painted-on lighting you're using.
      More satin finishes aren't a dealbreaker, unless they're almost glossy like some of the old Game Colors, but I'd still rather not have to stop every few steps to matte varnish everything.

    Your issues with thinning the fanatic range reminds me of my issues with the new Vallejo game color range, as in my experience they seem to break down super fast in the wet pallete and haven't found a good medium to use with them. I'm so frustrated I'm thinking about ditching them entirely.

    • @OldManb1981

    • @stahly_taleofpainters
      @stahly_taleofpainters  10 месяцев назад

      Yeah they break down like a lot of modern paint ranges do (think it's the binder that is required to make high opacity paints). For me it's not a problem as I use my wet palette to keep the paint fresh, not to store paints over multiple sessions.

      Go for AP, the triad system will help a lot at the beginning and the fanatic range is good quality. Don’t buy the complete set though, start small and expand if you truely enjoy the hobby. Later you can switch to pro acryl or AK 3rd gen for when you got some skills to show

    • @avinashtyagi2

      @@Walkion Why would you switch if the quality is already high in the Fanatic and you have experience with it?

    • @avinashtyagi2
      @avinashtyagi2 10 месяцев назад

      @Walkion I mean, every review I've seen of the AP Fanatic puts it as high quality and once you have experience and maybe add in some stuff from the SP and Air ranges if needed, you can do competition level quality work

    • @avinashtyagi2
      @avinashtyagi2 10 месяцев назад

      @@Walkion Hmmm, I see your point, especially if you're looking for a particular color that one paint range may not have (like in this video he was looking for that one color that citadel makes, but isn't in the AP range).
      of course in that case you can just have Fanatic as your main range, and just add particular colors from other ranges as needed.

    • @PrzybyszzMatplanety
      @PrzybyszzMatplanety 8 месяцев назад

      @@avinashtyagi2There are some issues with Fanatic most revewers never mention. The first one is that some paints are strongly desaturated and have strange hues. Like Fur Brown and Pure Red are actually pink. They reached excellent coverage probably ba adding a lot of white pigment. Second is good coverage - it's a blessing for young hobbyists but when you start to play with glazes and filters, it can be a problem. All paint ranges have their strengths and weaknesses, there is no one do it all palette. Fanatics are perfect for inexperienced painters that don't utilise very advanced techniques, but if you start to do them there are better options (Scale 75, AK Interactive, etc).

      Pallete: Plastic sucks. I use ceramic floor tiles from a home improvement store. Cheap, durable, easy to clean with hot water or windex.
      Mixing: Vallejo and Army Painter both need a decent amount of mixing. Stainless steel mixing balls make a fantastic agitator that cuts down on all the shaking. Not necessary to start, but if your elbow is getting tired, $10-15 will get you all the balls you'll ever need.
      Mindset: Have fun and don't be afraid to fail. I'm a perfectionist myself and have to constantly fight this. All my best looking miniatures are ones I painted for other people, because I relaxed and just had fun doing it.

    One thing I wish I knew is how desaturated the paints are, due to heavy amounts of white pigment in every bottle, and because of this, some paints dry "chalkier" than others. I picked up a few, and I'm struggling whether I even want to keep 90% them, and just make room for Vallejo's model color/game color revisions instead. There are some standouts, like Angel Green, Warlock Magenta, & Matt White, but the desaturated tones in all the others are really killing me(okay not really, but just a real buzzkill)
    Also the "warm" red triads are literally ORANGE both on the palette and dried on the model, and I actually returned those for my money back. Those colors were Absolute garbage IMO, and I'm wondering if I got a literal lemon. I'm grateful I did not grab any of the sets, and only just a few. However with my own personal qualms, you did a fantastic job on the mini, and explaining the best solutions to problems even you encountered, and The paint itself is good, I just hate the finish and muted tones.

      AK Interactive ONLY because I'm a fanboy and if you use any other paint range you can't win Golden Demon. (My number 1 is AK but that is sarcasm you can hear :P )

    Nope, I don't. AK Interactive Gen 3 are better, more available and cheaper. At least where I live. And I do not need flow improvers or retarders to thin AK paints.
    And I can't get rid of a feeling that this "color triad" is more of marketing step to make you buy MORE paints. So I will stick to kixing, because for minis I do not need those EXACT colors, contrary to when I paint my tanks and aircraft, where each nation had their own very specific grren or blue or khaki.

    Seems like an unnecessary number of caveats to getting into this paint range, not much reason to pick it over AK and Two Thin Coats imo.

    Matt paint is the boss, I detest glossy or satin paints. And I am no youtuber, just a regular painter.

      Same. But I don't really paint in a GW style, tend to prefer more volumetric lighting. And if I'm trying to control the light, then I don't want the shininess of the paint clashing with that.

    I've never cared about triad or any kind of systematic color pairings so that's irrelevant to me, but now that Vallejo destroyed their Game Color line by discontinuing their old colors and using a new medium that stays too wet preventing dry edge work I'm looking for a standard acrylic paint line that won't ever change with exact color equivalents to the old Vallejo Game Color and Model Color lines so I'll look into the Fanatic paints. That stabilizer medium by the way is probably polypropylene glycol. It's a food additive that slows the dry times of acrylic paints.
