Hey Jonathan, great video, thank you. I am with tunecore, and I know that generally you can not have the same song/album live with two distributors at once. For the week or so where there is overlap, does that ever become an issue? Where spotify or tunecore take down the release because there is another distributor that has released the exact same song (ISRCs/UPCs)?
Thank you! So I've personally never had an issue during the overlap period as long as you takedown your music from the other distributed as soon as you're 100% everything has moved over. Great question though! :)
hello, I plan on doing this later because I've been hearing that Distrokid is better than TuneCore. But my song was just sent to stores through TuneCore. I was wondering once I transfer the song to Distrokid (and its all good), can I cancel my yearly subscription with TuneCore? Will it mess anything up? Also, what is your opinion on Tunecore? Thanks!
The Tunecore is the worst distributor ever. I was banned due to "artificial streaming activity" without chance to get my music back. Hundreds thousands streams and thousands month listeners have been passed away. I'm gonna switch to different distributor and never back to tunecore...
Thank you. I seen two different releases that made me nervous as well because it didn’t transfer my stream counts over, but it’s only been 48 hours since I reuploaded lol I’m still waiting for everything to synch
Did your stream counts ever sync up? I'm also nervous because mine have overlapped by the newer tracks have zero streams still. It's been about 4 days.
Hey Jonathan, great video! Very informative and I love the step by step process, thank you! I noticed everyone is referring to Spotify streams, but what about apple and your youtube views/streams did those accurately switch over fine or did youtube go back to views return to 0? I am just curious on how all the other stores did when transferring your data? Also, was it an easy fix to link you youtube music with your YT artist page or did you have to resubmit some info to you new distributor?
I did this although the from distrokid to tunecore and I accidentally put the wrong audio file so I had to delete it and tried re-uploading it but it says UPC has already been taken even tho it's been a month.I sent an email but I was wondering u got any advice for this
Brilliant video! Thanks so much. I've got a couple of questions, about the master files for both the artwork and the audio. When you say they need to be the "same files", do you know if that means the "content" of the files needs to be identical, and/or the names of the files? For example, I have multiple masters of the same file, but with different file names for both the audio and artwork (ie: identical content but different file names), and don't know which actual files I uploaded originally. Do you think this matters? And as a continuation of this - do you think that it may be possible to upload a "remastered" audio rather than identical audio, if you keep the audio file name the same? Many thanks
i belieeeve last i saw it's based on file name, but given that "content ID" and such is based on what's actually in the audio, that could be incorrect if you want to switch using original files though, i know distrokid lets you download the files you uploaded for each release, including tracks and artwork; don't know about the others but i'm sure they have the option as well
CDBaby does NOT have the option to DL Source files, evn though they have them on their server. Which is frustrating because if you are onCDBaby and ever lose your source files you are SCREWED. @@celfhelp
I know this video is old and probably won't respond but just incase. Would it be ok if you just started releasing music using a new distributor while keeping the old songs on the old distributor? I am working on my first album and wan't it to be on a more dependable distributor since I've been using the same free one I started with. I'd rather not worry about getting that many songs transfered and just switching to a new distributor and using it for now on. But idk if that could cause issues!
You absolutely can use a different distributor for new music as long as you aren't locked into any specific agreements with your previous one (ie a publishing administration deal or something.) You can always use the new distributor like DistroKid, for a period of time and then if you like the services you've gotten, you can transfer your old music later (if you so choose.) But it's totally fine to just switch distributors and worry about transfer stuff later! :)
Does this also work in between one distributor? My friend has access to my music but I want to take full control of my own music now so is it possible to transfer from distrokid to distrokid?
Hey there! What if my music is already removed? I don't care about my stats as there weren't much anyways. I want to move to distrokid and rerelease under a new artist name... I am with tunecores publishing. Help 😢😊
when transferring our release to another distributor does our royalties transfer too? or its starts to zero since its a new distributor? i already got 405$ on my previous distributor i want to change distributor and release it via tunecore because im afraid that my previous distributor was a big scam its indiefy. 405$ was big enough to me what should i do? pls notice me
First, thank you. Do you know how long it takes for the streams to sync up? My songs have overlapped but they still have a Zero stream count. They were uploaded about 4 days ago. Thanks!
Hmm 4 days is probably good still. It usually takes me around a full week before I see everything 100% properly aligned. I would say anything longer than 2 weeks is strange and worth an email to your distributor (that you moved to) asking if there’s anything going on. Hope that helps!!

Will this work in the case where i change my stage name and want to switch over from tunecore to distri kid, however I want my artist name to change on Distrokid?
