The Icelandic Volcano Town Grindavik - The Bigger Picture Part 1/3

  • Welcome to this first part of my travel story to the new Icelandic volcano in Geldingadalir but it took me a while longer than usual to write and edit this story since the script turned out to be around 45 minutes so I'm publishing it in 3 parts. Part 2/3 will be online in the next days.
Part 1. The travel to Grindavík and the surroundings:
Part 2. Full Grindavík tour, culture and stories.
Part 3. Walking tour to the volcano and footage
So please excuse the delay but at least i can say that i managed to cover most sides stories and do the kind of video i originally planned for, or the life around the volcano and the danger to Grindavík, as seen from my own lenses.
So for those of you who just wanted to see the “red stuff” it’s less than you might expect, but i covered however the surroundings very well and it’s mixed with information about icelandic history, culture and mentality, which is an approach that I know many of my viewers like.
i’m back and thanks for your patience.
So i had no excuse to complain over lack of footage this time, but i want to mention though that i had to work under bad conditions by the volcano and it’s my plan to go up there again soon since the landscape is changing there day by day, and I will upload a short update on thuseday

Overcoming an attention deficit disorder, you have easily managed to captivate my interest. As a mere consumer of RUclips, may I compliment you on your excellent and effective grasp of English to write and produce a most informative visual commentary, with just enough dry wit to engage your audience and no ‘more’.

I understand luck catching the perfect sun set, the raw beauty of open landscape-I miss so much of the simular bleak beauty of my own homeland. Dark humor to cope with ever present death by weather makes perfect sense to me. You have done a brilliant value to attract more stupid humans with full pockets to the land you love. So wonderful to enjoy Icelandic humour! My kind of dark. So hold tourists at the airport and require them to view your film before stomping around on the moss and daring to sea to not kill them. Where individuals defy warning signs, the cost of the rescue should come out of their pocket, not the government (or the firework manufacturers).

Thank you for your humorous, well presented video of authentic life in Iceland who are living daily with an erupting volcano. I have been longing for an informative video with geological content and a picture of the Reykjanes Peninsula (maps) in relation to the rest of the island. You have provided for the mind that wants to move beyond close-ups of oozing lava while fearing for the lives of people stepping on what appears to be a solid crust of lava to find the “real heat” to roast a hot dog. I appreciate the history of life in and around Grindavik and what the future may hold for them. Thank you for sharing your personal history to help us understand what it means to be an Icelander who loves his country at its best and worst. Thank you so much. I am unable to travel, but I have always wanted to visit Iceland so videos like this are, to me, absolute magic. I have enjoyed your narrative as it expresses the views of a true Icelander, not just the script for a travel advertisement. I am very impressed with your rescue services and wish tourists would heed danger warnings . We have the same problem here in the UK. Sadly there will always be idiots who put other's lives at risk no matter where in the world they are. The work of fishermen is a dangerous and economically essential. Thankfully there are rescue personnel who are willing to risk all to save these brave workers when in difficulties.. I am looking forward to watching the rest of your story. Maybe you could do a series on other areas of your beautiful country.

@@JustIcelandic I said talented, that doesn't do you justice...gifted, and using your gift so well, getting the Big Picture and the background to your fishing days, the tragic events (the importance of the Harbour). Every aspect of it was far better than a big budget documentary channel could do. Take care and I so look forward to your next instalments.

I enjoyed this so much! The wonderful memories it brought back made me tear up a bit. I remember being warned about the sneaker waves! I wish I had done more hiking in those days. Too old and rickety now 😂 But seeing it now through the eyes of the Nov. 2023 events reminded of my taste of the land that straddles both the Atlantic Ridge and a mantle plume. Life on the edge of the world is full of natural beauty and a lurking sense of "Will it happen?" Thanks so much.

This is true Geography, back when I was first studying it in about 1958, we were told that a true geographer looked at everything from the landscape to the people, from the history to the economy, and this does just that. Looking forward to the next episodes.

Landscapes are a big, big factor in where people settle, and so it affects everything about them. I like the mostly-European approach of including the geology and earth sciences in the Geography department of universities. Ties things together better. 👍
Love the tour around the area, and the maps and satellite images are the best way to illustrate the landscapes and what you’re showing. One of the best “big picture” videos!
