  • We visited Nátthagi, where the lava is now filling slowly. It’s obvious that the lava will go over the highway in the end, the only question is, how long will it take to reach the road. Also, there was an earthquake in Brennisteinsfjöll (The Sulphur Mountains) but it’s probably just a shift of tension in the area.

Amazing to see! Roman from Gut'n Tog hiked that valley last week before it broke through. I recognized that big rock immediately. The interesting thing about this volcano and it's fissures are they are directly above the tectonic plates where the Eurasian and North American plates come together. It's exactly on the lines. Awesome!

I was a little concerned when Valur was describing the new type of lava being like slivers of glass & wonder if the strong wind could blow the glass & people could breathe it in or get it in their eyes. That could be deadly. I’m sure the experts wouldn’t let people go there if it was too dangerous though.

I think they knew it would eventually overflow but they were hoping to divert it long enough to coax it to a different path.

I hope that your town remains safe. Thank you for your on the scene reports. It's almost like being there. Since I'm from Oregon, USA, and familiar with volcanic landforms this helps me imagine being in Iceland. I watched the Mt. St. Helens eruption and prior to it had climbed the mountain many times. Stay safe.

the Icelanders were already successful on Heimeay Island when they
cooled a lava flow with water and so its viscosity so
increased so that it no longer flowed much further.
They pump up vast amounts of the surrounding seawater.
Maybe fire-fighting planes or a cascade of fire hoses will help

    Around 16:30
It appears that it does move like water does - when it gets squeezed into a tighter area, the lava moves faster. When the area broadens out, it moves slower.

Big petrology discussion the other night about this on Tokolosh's channel. Most of this magma is low-silocates like olivine from the mantle (you can see the green in Gutn Tog's vids); the high-silicious stuff is picked up from crust, apparently.

10:20 "no houses in danger" Well, apart from Ísólfsskáli, last home of Ísólfur, one of the early settlers of Iceland. If the lava reaches Ísólfsskáli, then this eruption will have successfully eradicated Ísólfurs home, and also his burial mound in Geldingadalur, which got covered in lava on the very first day. Makes you wonder what arch enemies he had unfinished business with :)
