While I disagree with some other people who say it's silly that Scott was sent to prison at all (the problem wasn't the whistleblowing, it's the hacking which is still illegal even under those circumstances) the fact that Scott after getting out of prison wasn't immediately offered dozens of high-paying jobs from other companies who want to look good for hiring him and that he had to struggle with child support and seeing his daughter again completely broke my suspension of disbelief. Hell, he should have gotten so many interviews and media attention while in prison (as well as probably a gofundme started by the people he helped) that he should have already been well-off before he even got out.

Schooley and Erin Brockovich are probably the most famous US whistleblower against companies and they've all had books and movies made after them. It's not just that Scott should be fine, given the circumstances he should be getting a deal from Hollywood, his story would probably sell even better than Erin Brockovich did!
My suspicion is that Antman's script was the victim of a series of serious revisions. I bet that the original idea was to make him a reformed criminal who really deserved to be in the situation that he was at the start of the film and that the first movie was going to be partly about him redeeming himself. The movie would have made a lot more sense that way

Tony Stark had a background as an arms dealer, we actually saw the consequences of his company's actions and his first movie was about him trying to atone for it. Black Widow had a largely vague but sordid past as a spy, but not much about her actual crimes are brought up after the first Avengers movie. The only one that got much follow-up was Dreykov's daughter, and she turned out to still be alive in her prequel movie. Also, the movie said most other Black Widows were mind-controlled all along, sidestepping any need to deal with that Bucky spent decades as an assassin for HYDRA, but all of that was done while he was being mind-controlled, so nothing he did in this time was his fault Loki's series does at least acknowledge his past crimes, but Marvel has been easing him into a redemption story for years and I don't think the series even acknowledged that he killed Coulson (speaking of Coulson, I just realized that Agents of SHIELD might as well never have happened and the MCU at large would still be exactly the same).

I watched this movie on Disney Plus a couple years ago, and although that second scene is hilarious, I don’t remember any character in the movie saying he was a whistleblower. I thought his prison sentence was just for thievery!
Nope, it's explained by Luis in the scene in his apartment after Scott gets fired from his job and mentioned again later by Hank Pym. So Scott being a whistleblower turned white hat hacker is a pretty key aspect of his motivations.
If they financially ruin Darren Cross, he probably won't have the resources to start over. Although, this is the MCU and a genius can make super tech using scraps from the junk yard.
