Lidar is available on most flagships and probably a lot easier/useful to use on android OS. Only works on iPhone 12 Pro and up

It’s used behind the scenes to enhance photos and it’s used in the measuring app to get way more accurate distance measurements
@ohuhi 123 I don't think it actually helps with either of those things lol, if I'm not mistaken lidar is specifically for what's in this video and for depth, idk about autofocus and night vision though.

This will save a lot of money for people who want to make realistic 3d image prototyping for sure. It will be equally good if android's start coming with it too. But 1/1 for apple for implementing it. 👍
There are depth sensors on androids such as the note 10+
Samsung used TOF in Galaxy S10 and S20 lines for front facing camera. It is similar to what Lidar does, but the way it does it is different. Lidar uses pulse lasers, while TOF creates depth maps based on light detection. Outcome is still the same, a 3D replica of footage. Sadly, they abandoned it with S21.
@Jared Stimpson Unfortunately little to no apps help in harnessing the power of the sensors sadly. But if any exist, it may have compatibility issues. If support is given from the factory like apple, it will simply be awesome. But now that I phones are coming with it, Samsung's may follow
There is still a resolution and accuracy problems. If you're planning to use a model for engineering purposes even a proper photogrammetry will work better but luckily you will have to get a 3d scanning setup in some way
The sony xperia xz2 premium from 2018 has a lidar scanner and a native app for it

Apple literally made a big deal out of LiDAR when announcing the first iPhone to have this feature. Plus, the entire tech community was talking about it for quite a long time. How do people not know what LiDAR is despite all of the noise that surrounded it?

Apple spoke on it for about 5 min and never pushed its features...just know it makes your bokeh effect that much better

I was so excited when I found out about that feature. It would make my life in 3D software so much easier and fun but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to exist an app that lets you unlimitedly export scans for free

If phones listen to you speak about things and then advertise them to you, clearly the microphone picks up things you dont record. It wouldn't be a stretch to think a sensor that no one knows is there or the function of could spontaneously turn on and record all of your surroundings and potentially the people within the phones surroundings too. But I'm probably just overthinking it lmao

That lidar on the iPhone is actually pretty dead accurate. Some dude even made a comparison video on positioning of the iPhone vs professional equipment
basically 80% of why i'm upgradeing as I do a lot of 3D printing and modelling, the other 20% is for 120Hz refresh rate.
