I’ve seen thousands of camera tests and comparisons but this is the first time I see an accurate test of the LiDAR feature of the iPhone. Well done! Thank you!
The gps is definitely the improvement. Measuring two feet off from your actual location matters a lot when trying to measure small distances but it is probably as good as a phone gps could do, but when you travel 100 feet the 2 ft margin of error is a lot less impactful. I think movement and the recalculation of distance that GPS does as you move probably increases accuracy a bit as well
In the straight line iphone test. It would be interesting to see you start recording and walk in a figure 8 patter before walking the line. Just wondering if those overlapping points would help correct the data at the BEGINNING of the dataset rather than just the end.
I suppose the enhancement in accuracy point cloud could be caused by the GPS accuracy. The longer you work/scan the more accurate GPS positioning become. Also trees could influence on the accuracy as well - in the end of the scanning route you went out to the open space.
Ooh, interesting that you can actually gain accuracy by scanning longer! Do you think the LIDAR performed similarly on the 15 Pro to how it would’ve on the 14 Pro? I’m kinda curious if the change in LIDAR sensors has affected anything.
Very interesting! When you scanned the island, started going around the curb and got back to your starting point, how well did the point cloud align and how well did the phone scan do measuring from one side of the island curb to the other, opposite side versus the more accurate total station points? All very interesting - looking forward to additional videos on this!
thank you very much, sir i watched a lot of your videos and decided to buy ipad for work purposes now i'm making tons of work with lidar scaner about buildings examinations and measurments i'm always checking the results I get, acсuracy is enough for my needs I hope you will continue to please us with your videos subscriber from Belarus
I'm still using the iPhone12 Pro, and I'm curious if the 15 Pro has any significant improvement in LiDAR resolution. Can it see/scan fine detail a lot better? How about depth, can it scan further away than the 12 Pro? I'd love to see some tests set up.
Same here, I’m still on the 12 Pro Max and I’ve seen no reason to change iPhone for many years to be honest! However, if there’s a big Lidar improvement difference to the 15 (or the 16 as I write this), then I could be convinced to upgrade.
@@Steve_W27 I wish as well, but since there's been no announcement about it, and no Apple-version of Polycam, it seems like they're not bothering with it, unfortunately, even though I FEEL like that would be key to improving their "spatial video"
Nice Video, from a fellow survey/ engineer I wouldn’t even bother comparing the positions of the scan gps and those of the GNSS, unless the phone has RTK. The real test is whether the scan island match the Total station island. And with the linear test of those chevrons that you marked at 10 feet each, how close did the scan get to 10 feet between them?
I am by no means an expert on this, but I feel some of the iPhone inaccuracies from when you were measuring out the chevrons on the roadway, happened to come from you moving too fast at first. I thought I saw a warning pop up telling you to slow down. This was very interesting though, and perhaps the phone was improving on its own. I’m just curious if you can test this theory as well. Good work! I’m not a surveyor, but work for a large CM and like to scan stuff with my phone.
Thank-you so much for these videos. The iphone 15 pro was supposed to have a new, much improved lidar sensor, by Sony. It appears from your data in this video (showing 1 to 3 ft error), vs your iphone 14 lidar video (showing .08 to .124 ft error), that the new lidar sensor is horribly worse. If I'm interpreting you correctly, I am very disappointed in the new iphone 15 pro lidar. Perhaps Apple didn't need a very accurate sensor for focusing, and just wanted to save money. I wonder if the MagicPlan people will still use the iphone.
The inaccuracy he points out is from the GPS unit, not Lidar. He praises the accuracy of the lidar repeatedly. The point cloud and photogrammetry is frankly insane for the price. The geolocation is poor at the start of the session, but gets better as the lock improved. This also makes sense because high frequency GPS is crazy power hungry, and the mm-level accuracy of his Licia gear would be orders of magnitude overkill for 99.9995% of the billions of user’s daily lives at the expense of hours of battery life.
Great video! However, when the island was surveyed using the iPhone, the measurements likely captured the tops of the plants rather than the actual ground level. This discrepancy is probably the reason for the differences between the two calculated volumes. As a surveyor, you should redo the survey in an area without any plants for a more accurate comparison.
Brilliant videos, but would like to have seen a comparison with the previous Iphone data that you collected did around the perimeter of your house with and without the dji gimbal again for a like for like comparison - perhaps survey the house perimeter with total station too as a benchmark
great video mate, would be interesting to see how the lidar has changed, if it has over the years. I wonder if that's something you would be able to make a video on? :)
Great video Rami! My total station makes accurate measurements out to almost a thousand yards. I’m curious though how or if would the iPhone’s Lidar’s accuracy change if measuring targets over a much greater distance.
hey mate - great channel and content. How good do you think the relative point to point accuracy would be. Particularly interested in this for manhole surveys as an addition to basic invert level shots by total station. As the pipework is frequently inset and hard to reach i thought stand clone scans may be useful for verification of invert level, pipe diameters etc. +/-3cm would be good enough for most use cases. Currently we do scan inverted with the BLK360, where budget and accuracy requirements allow but for smaller jobs I could see this being a good addition to our tool kit. Thoughts?
Am I missing something here. I use Faro S70 for capturing point cloud data and we don't use its GPS but put down markers and Survayor measures them so we can properly Geo-Locate. In the case of Iphone I think that should be done as well to be able to position it in right place. Moreover I am not surprised at all that the Iphone surface volume is higher as more points you have the more volume you will have. it is same issue when someone would measure country borders that if you have smaller distances between points the longer the perimeter goes as realife is not smooth or straight. Moreover especially when taking into account complexity of the ground. The second test makes me more worried as the fact it gets closer results to the Total station is actually very bad as that would mean that distances between markers are quite a bit off and constant distance.
Great job.I saw some videos saying the lidar of iphone 15 pro is a downgrade, bigger but less points,so i wonder if i should but it? But after seeing your video,i think iphone 15 worth it.
I advise to scan with phone more slowly, and like a ninja, not by casual walking. It will improve the scan accuracy. Also please use some other scan apps to add more comparison!
Are you sure you have used GPS on the iPhone? Maybe the WiFi Positioning was used instead. I do measure LiDAR by small objects used. Took my motorbike and walked around. The 3D model formed out of this data is mindblowing perfect. My software for LiDAR is Scaniverse - big difference to other LiDAR scan software available.
I just watched this entire video even though I have no knowledge or understanding whatsoever in regards to surveys or even how to do a decent 3d scan with my 15 pro max lol
