I keep repeating "Expose for the background first", but what does this mean? When doing tube light-painting, there are so many things to consider. Over time, I figured out that I should consider the "background" exposure first, and then I manage the rest. This is what this episode is about
Here’s my way of doing this. I adjust the camera settings to get a properly exposed background, just as if I would do landscape photography. What I set is the ISO and f-stop values, and then I take a test shot of about one second. Once I get a decent image, I ask Kim to do a circle with the tube in order to figure out the right balance between the background and the light-painting. Based on the test shot, I either ask her to dim down the light or to make it brighter. Once we get it right, I join Kim and we do a short series of pictures.
I repeat this process every time the light changes or when I move to a different framing.
This is a quick way to come up with well-balanced tube light-painting pictures. Over time, it gets easier to read the light and these things become very natural to do.
This was the first of many nights shooting under a bright moon and after a while, it became really clear that the best option was always to simply put the moon in the frame. That’s how we avoided tripod shadows or any weird looking stuff in our images. At that point, I can safely say that when you’re in doubt, simply put the moon in your shot

It must be very satisfying for you both to have such a strong partnership and be able to work so well together to get everything done. Beautiful shots!

NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE!!
Hey Eric - question please ? how is it with the new mirrorless Canon about dust on the sensor in this duty situations... Think you don´t have to change the lens:-) otherwise...?
heyyyyy hi! I don't worry too much about that. I've been traveling with a pair of EOS-R for a year and everything is looking good! I clean the sensor once in a while... :)
I am attempting to make my own tubes. Going great. One question was what are you using for those endcaps? I am currently trying to just modify the original T-8 black end caps.
These are my caps: lightpainting.store/collections/light-painting-tube-accessories/products/tube-caps-v4
You can do your own pretty easily. Back in the days, I was stuffing my tubes with toilet paper to bounce the light in the tube :)
How do you keep yourself from being in the shot while you are swinging the light behind her? I can always see myself in the shot afterwards.
hey hi! It's mostly proper alignment behind the model. Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/Vl6yPxgquJM/видео.html
Let me know if this helps ::)
I love your videos, but I don't understand how you do your light patterns and run out of the frame, all in the three second window that you show when you show your calibrations on the screen . . . maybe I just confuse easily?
Thank you for the great video and explanation. I'd have never thought about putting the moon into the shot when Lightpainting - it really gives the image a special almost extraterrestial feeling.
One thing I was wondering about: Have you ever tried using the wireless canon app to preview your shots on the spot? When I'm lightpainting I always have my little cheap amazon tablet with the eos camera app with me. My 80D will transfer the image in just a few seconds via wifi and I can easily adjust my settings or my painting technique from there.
hey hi! I tried once and hated working this way lolll ::))) I really REALLY love to run in the dunes back and forth from the camera to Kim :) Thanks!! :D :D :D
@@Ericpare I can totally understand that. Not everything that makes a process faster makes it more enjoyable ;-)
And I guess with your experience you have a lot less tweaking to do than us mere mortals :D
@@Leoboe haha believe me, I do a lot of tweaking ::)) Thanks :D :D :D
Thank you sir. That picture with thunderstorm is out of the world picture🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👌👌👌...Didnt you guys are not afraid to do those painting in that abandoned area?😅
