Indeed, it is diffecult to follow when you are using many dazzeling musical terms. I will sing when I'm alojne I will sing as a tiny mouse who is singing his poetry to the moon and stars.
VoicePlay is so good at character voices- Eli, in particular, has a ridiculously versatile voice. And Layne and Geoff are pretty much always going to be the arrangers for the music; I can only think of one or two times when they've brought in someone else to provide the arrangement (although they have had assistance occasionally for featured artists, typically when they bring in a female voice). It's one of the things I love best about VoicePlay- that control of their work from start to finish. It also lets them take risks you don't see the other a cappella groups taking, and again, the artist in me really admires them for that. VoicePlay's arrangements are unmistakable; you can hear the difference in the harmonies and other creative choices they make.

Yes this was Layne’s arrangement but Geoff is the one who came up with the video concept. Normally what happens is whoever does the arrangement also does the video but there is also exceptions. Love your reactions to VoicePlay and Geoff! 💜🎃💜

Earl who was high tenor is absolute beast up high. He makes those high notes so easy with his chest and mix.
Geoff also did a "Headless Horseman" and VoicePlay also covered "What's This" from "The Nightmare Before Christmas"
Eli held that for a solid 13 seconds. Amazing as they all are, Eli for me is the backbone and star of the lot
Geoff called that F5 Earl's World. LOL

Layne did all of the Halloween VoicePlay songs except Grim Grinning Ghosts, which was Geoff. Geoff's private channel has "solo" work that he's done for Halloween. (Can we still call it solo work when there are 4 or 5 Geoff's to listen to?)
You can call it what you want, I call it drool-worthy....Er, I mean “delightful!”

Those high notes you're hearing in the background are from Earl which is their high tenor formerly from voiceplay he left last year, and Eli held that note for 7-9 seconds amazing!!!

I've heard Earl hitting F5 in couple of different videos. He's probably gone higher than that, but I can't point to a specific example of it.
earl (the one singing all those high notes) is such a talented and amazing singer I was very sad when he left
This is one of my favorite songs that they've done. It really is just them playing with their voices (hey, that's got a nice ring to it...). Their capacity for theatricality while simultaneously providing an outstanding vocal performance is unequivocally my favorite thing about them, and why they've stuck with me for years now. Even as they work with guest singers, they get such amazing synergy out of the entire group. But, I do have to say that my other favorite aspect about them is that they just give off the vibe that they are having the best time ever. That pure joy just brings the audience right along with them on the vocal journey they take. I'm not going to lie, it's a big part of why I've fallen out with Pentatonix... when you see their videos for a good while now, they just look... like they're trying to look so serious and intense that it hurts, and that's just not the experience I'm after. 100% a personal preference matter.
I am really happy with Cesar as their new permanent fourth. I feel like he's able to carry that same kind of playful, joyful energy as the rest of the group. Like, Deejay Young did some outstanding vocals, but I just had trouble seeing him quite matching the lightheartedness of the others.
The more I hear of Eli, the more he impress me
I love VoicePlay. I listen to most reactions to their videos. But I only subscribe if the reactor is particularly entertaining (not often) or if they point out thing that I and other reactors missed, adding to my enjoyment of the music. Today I’m subscribing to you. Thank you for a good breakdown.

No, hon, the first thing you should be pointing out is that if you don't have any candy to give out turn off your porch light and don't answer the bloody door. They broke Samhain/Halloween rules, they paid the price.

In the description of the video they usually list who arranged, who did which part, who did the postproduction, etc.
Layne Stein, the beatboxer, arranged this one. He and Geoff do most of the arranging with Eli doing some of them.
I never did hear why Earl left the group, but he's such a great counter-tenor.
It clearly took them a long time to do this video, with them transforming into the different characters.
VoicePlay often uses words from the song as echoes or background layers.
I love that they put as much attention to staging and costumes even to the special effect contact lenses a couple of them have later in the video.

Doing the sound track to 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' isn't easy to do.

Everyone else has already said that Geoff and Layne typically do the arrangements, but what they HAVEN'T said is that they list the arranger in the description of each video :)
At the very beginning (before the song starts) It sounds like they're playing the intro to their version of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" in the background.

They went all out on the makeup effects on this one! And they used so much dissonance in the arrangement as you noted Jennifer. Would definitely love to hear your analysis of other VoicePlay covers -- there are many to choose from 😊. Given how much you enjoyed this and the other two you reviewed, I wholeheartedly encourage you to have a go at 'Hoist the Colors," theirrelatively recent cover from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 (Geoff did the arrangement and video and he and Eli did the lighting design). A veritable feast for the ears as well as the eyes. Every member has an opportunity to shine and in true VoicePlay style, the whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts.

All of the "pushes" you mention are swung notes. They fall right before the downbeat of the next note which gives it that "pushing" feeling.

There is a follow up to this, showing some of how it was made. Very interesting if you're into that kind of thing.
Each time they come out with a song I listen to the original right after to see what all they incorporated with the video...so much fun every time. Not sure if you have done any of Chris KLAFFORD's video before. His kitchen sessions are awesome to listen to....I would recommend Ocean Eyes, Imagine, Tennessee Whiskey or just all 3 of them.

@ 7:26 Your cat looks so much like "El Naranjo". He is not my cat, but does have a broken back leg. I do put out extra food for him, but I don't like that he pushes the other strays away that I also feed. Their names are Fizzgig, Lazy, Midnight, Beautiful, and Prince. Sadly, Destroy and Nike no longer come around.
You should check out their Queen in 5 minutes if you want to hear a lot more of Earl (the really high voiced one) He has such an amazing voice!

Let's see. Tim Foust of Home Free taught Geoff that low, breathy singing called Dragon Breath; listen to Home Free's Elvira (with the freaking Oakridge Boys!) for an example. For a long continuously held note, listen to Tim at the end of Home Free's cover of Ring of Fire.
I'm so glad I found your content. I feel like I've heard half a dozen people react to this (and listened to it a dozen times myself) and you're the first person to point out that like delayed repeating bit early on (boys and girls of every age). such a subtle but effective layer.
Also, if you're interested I'd really suggest checking out the artist Dodie if you haven't heard her. She's got a great voice and does beautiful harmonies. Maybe the song Hate myself? Though they're all pretty incredible.

Your earrings are really cool but the way you do your eye shadow is crazy good.
The boy in this video is Layne's nephew. Layne had said that this video took forever to do because of the costume changes and makeup. They had to do it a little at a time.
A couple of suggestions for a reaction - We're Good (first time with Cesar and featuring Adriana Arellano), Warriors - Layne plays violin and beatboxes, J None plucks a bit on a violin, Dream On (which Geoff sometimes calls Warriors 2), Geoff - solos - Blackbird, also High and Dry.

@ 17:30 I used to sing karaoke back when there was a bar near my house. When I was done with my first song, I would ask if there was anything else they wanted me to murder for them. They always told me not to sell myself short. I have played in a band, and know a little bit about sound production. That being said, I could hear where I fell short of my standards. Thankfully for me, the people I was singing for were far more forgiving of me than I was of myself.
So, I know it wasn't you but I'm going to blame you anyway. So, when I first moved into my house, I was always getting calls asking for Jennifer. For some reason, no matter how many times I told them there was no Jennifer at my house, they refused to believe me. This was from 1995 - about 2000.
Now, having had my say above, I love this song by one of my favorite groups and I have given you a like and subscribed even though I haven't watched it yet. I figure you deserve that after ranting at you for something I know you have no responsibility for.

Am I correct in thinking that you believe this is performed live? It isn't. It's lip-synced. They record the audio. Then they record the video portion and mix it up together.
I don't get to meet to many foreigners I. My part of the us do any other countries do holoween like we do? Full out candy explosion for the kids and costume ehhum for the adults?
