Russian Trade - 24 Live Another Day - Final Scene

  • Here are Jack Bauer's final moments, in 24 Live Another Day. Sets up a strange story line giving the possibility of we might get to see Bauer again perhaps in Legacy. The writers couldn't bring themselves to kill off Jack Bauer, resulting in this conflicted ending for LAD.
Here Chloe & Jack are trading their places with the Russians. In the same episode as Audrey's death. From seeing the promos for this episode and seeing the casket. I was certain it would be Jack with the death ending. Given the time jump. But the UK promo was released which stumped me as it showed a second from this scene with Jack and Chloe meeting, in daylight. So if the time jump occurred and he was still alive it twisted my mind for this.
Chloe receives a piece of paper off Jack, presumably with a note on it. Which she takes back and is an excellent set up for the future of 24. Always great to see Belcheck as well.
    Best Quotes!
"If anything happens to her, or my family. Your entire world will come apart"
"We just want you Mr Bauer, that's all we ever wanted"

I read an interview with one of the writers of this episode, Manny Cotto, and he said he has a fantasy in which when Jack lands in Russia, the Russians do not kill him or arrest him but rather they say to him "we need you," and the story continues from there. The more I watch this scene, the more I think Jack will have to neutralize a terrorist threat in Russia in exchange for his freedom. The evidence:
    1) They never pat him down for weapons
    2) They never handcuff him (even the Americans who take Jack in at the end of Redemption handcuff him)
    3) Jack threatens the main Russian Guy and the guy takes him seriously (how could Jack take the guy's entire world apart if he was going to prison or was going to his death?)
    4) Jack constantly smirking (hardly consistent with how Jack acted when he accepted death or imprisonment in the past)
I believe our beloved hero is still taking down terrorists in Russia within the 24 Universe. I would love it if the writers go with this storyline if we ever get to see Jack again!

SFIT2000 yeah, I can't believe it. There are freaking procedurals that have far easy formula to pull off and they screw up after couple seasons, 24 managed to remain great throughout its entire runtime. Yes, they were some missteps here and there and it's quiet understandable, but what was achieved overall is phenomenal.

I hated this ending but upon rewatch of the 24 series,I realize Jack is comfortable with the devil he knows. He's a perfect contrast to the terrorists he fights. The one positive you can say about these animals is that they are willing to lay down their lives for a cause.jack is perfectly happy being a sacrifice for his country and it's people. Jack can never truly give up that life. Unfortunately ,everyone involved with him ends up suffering also.

Kiefer is 56, not too old at all. I would love just one last season, have it skilfully cram in all the old characters who are still alive but whom we haven’t seen for years, Tony Almeida, Kate Warner, Adam Kaufman, Aaron Pierce, Josh and Marilyn Bauer, Rick, Mike Novick and Mandy just to make a few. I get this would be hard and that some of these characters would be hard to write into a script naturally, some weren’t very important or liked by the fans but regardless. It would be awesome for a season like this that also includes Jack and Kim and where Jack either gets a happy ending or dies, not a bittersweet one or one where it’s vague as to what happens. I know it’s likely it’ll never happen but I think it’d be a real hit and the fans would love it. People say 24 lost its relevance due to the passage of time after 9/11 but with how the world is today we need Jack more than ever.

@@Balnazzardi he isn't going to rot, the intention of this scene is that he is going to his death. The difference between season 8 and this? He actually wants this. Jack is dead already, after Audrey he has nothing else left. He can't go back to Kim, he is a target and will put her in danger. He can't kill these Russians, that's fucking stupid obviously, because they can easily send more people and next time even hurt Kim. He wanted to die for many years, the only reason he didn't commit suicide was because it would've been for nothing. Jack always wanted his end to mean something. This means something, he finally is able to protect his loved one without having to sacrifice someone other than himself. That is why he's smiling, he got what he wanted, it's a perfect end for him.
Also, anti-climactic? Really? So getting shot by Chloe and then spending rest of the finale tied to a table is super climactic? Because that's what entire season 8 finale was lol. Here, he manages to slaughter entire freighter all by himself, go ballistic on Cheng, chop his freaking head off, stop World fucking War 3 and then sacrifice his life for Chloe. That is anti-climactic, but spending entire episode half-dead and then just running away at the end is just a perfect end for 24 it seems.

Especially cos the series was called 'Live Another Day', felt so natural & obvious considering there's no fresh stories to tell. But it's all subjective. I understand your points even if I don't agree with them.
I recently watched one of those "Retrospectives with the actors" vids with Kiefer and he considers that there could be more life to show, which surprised me. After Legacy's poor ratings and considering 24 tends to push the envelope with its themes, I very much doubt 24's new owner (Disney) will have the guts to give us another season. How many bad situations has Jack Bauer gotten himself out of? Many. He is incredible. This is what I think happened. They fly off in the helicopter right? Well, Jack is in the heli with 4 people, a pilot and 3 other dudes. Jack is not in handcuffs. Do you really think that Jack just sat there enjoying the ride the whole time? No. With what we've seen Jack do in the past 9 years, he would have easily overpowered the people in the helicopter and took control of it. We already know that Jack knows how to fly.
I think he overpowered the men on board and then either landed and "disappeared" again, or flew it to another location to get a head start away from anyone currently hunting him.
If you think about it, it's totally doable.

Please give us just one more season with Jack Bauer. This scene was fine in the fact that he goes to prison to in "Bauer's" mind be at peace and away from the horrors he has to endure throughout the last nine seasons but it leaves it too open ended for a return.
If it ever happens I would love a storyline of Jack Bauer and Tony Almeida (Legacy which sucked established he is out of prison) to somehow reunite whether it be enemies or forgive each other for what went down in season 7 just to have them both got out with a bang. Jack and Tony (aside from Kim) are the last two characters from season 1 to still be alive in the series it would be so fitting to give the "original" 24 a final closure with it's two main leads. Two men who are two sides of the same coin

  • @michaelcarolan3245

I hope this is the last we see of Jack Bauer, it's a bitter sweet ending/ episode in a very 24 style. If they bring him back in a cameo it will probably be awful. At least this was an emotional ending with some semblance of closure. I think this mini series was always intended to be the last outing for the original 24. LAD pretty much brought back any loose end characters, Audrey/Heller etc and wrapped up their storylines nicely. I think this ending is much more fitting to the show than season 8, which is kind of a non ending, Jack just goes off into the distance again. In this scene he is willingly going to his death. People complain that it is too similar to S5, taken by the Chinese, but remember Jack murdered a bunch of people, the Russians want him to 'pay', they are out for blood. 2 episodes before, when they got his location, they sent out a hit squad with machine guns to slaughter him. They want him dead, not imprisoned. Jack saves the day but loses Audrey, his love (full circle season 1) pretty much the only thing he has left to live for. He even tries to commit suicide on the boat and in the deleted scene after tells the soldier 'I'm finished' as he stumbles away. He realises that as long as he is alive, on the run, his family will never be safe, it's exactly the same as the Drazen scenario from the very first season. He knows too well the bad things that can happen as a result of his actions. This all comes full circle as Jack sacrifices himself to save Chloe and make sure his family is protected for good, which is pretty much all he has ever wanted from the first episode. This is why I hope this is the end, thematically and emotionally it leaves it at a typically tragic end where the day has been saved but a heavy price is paid. I definitely see this as Jack Bauer going to his demise, doing one last good deed, you can see the relief on his face in the helicopter. I understand they couldn't show Jack dying because he is such a lucrative character for FOX but the writers even toyed with the idea of him blowing himself up with a grenade in the helicopter. So for me this is conclusive that Jack is going to his death, to be horribly tortured, killed and buried in cement somewhere, never to be heard of again. A bleak end but typical 24. On a side note the final shot is also a bookend to the 24 Redemption ending, which is the beginning of 24's last era. Same situation just mirrored, Jack going back to face his past actions. Which I thought was cool.

I know I'm late for this section, but you summed up my thoughts perfectly. I think it's brilliant and even symbolic ending, considering what he said about dying for something that is worth it in season 6. Audrey is dead, going back to Kim will cause only trouble for her, there's nothing left for him. The fact that before that he actually pulls a handgun after Audrey's death and then puts it back in (clearly thinking about killing himself) makes this scene even better.

I always thought Jack and Chloe handed each other something during their exchange. Tracking device? We need a complete closure to the Jack Bauer story!

Literally watching this with tears streaming down my face. For me, 24 was life, the greatest tv ever created, nothing even comes close to it. Every day I hope to hear that there's gonna be one more season to wrap up Jack's storyline, it simply csnt be left like this, him rotting in a Russian cell. I don't understand what the hold up is, I know Keifers been doing other shows and his music, but FOX need to get this sorted ASAP. For my sanity!

I would love for another season of 24 but if this is it I'm ok with it. Jack's character is one of doing the tough thing to help save lives. That character doesn't get happy endings, it would just feel cheap to have that imo

It truly was one of the best shows. I would also recommend watching Homeland with Claire Danes. She is like a jack bauer. 24 and homeland are 2 of my all time favorite shows ever. You will love homeland.

Just watched this series for the first time and it surprised me how good it was. It had it bumpy road but they manage to continue course and give us great moment’s, lines and over all emotion. When you analyze jacks story it’s a sad one. IMO one of the best scenes was when He had his final say to James Heller when Heller said to him he was curse and that everyone around him dies. Shht is true everyone has. Except cloe, I forget who tells her that she’s the only lucky person who has survived Jack Bauer but I was like fo realssss Shht crazy.

Belchek is such a badass character and the dynamic between him and Jack is awesome. It’s a damn shame he was only brought on in limited capacity in the last season. But I’m just really hoping for a new season soon. They’re talking about a prequel storyline like young Jack Bauer with a different actor portraying Jack on his younger adult years but I think they should scrap that idea and continue 24 in present day with Jack and Chloe and a new cast of new characters and bring back belcheck and somehow release Tony from prison and give him a redemption arc. That would be epic. The country and the world need more 24

I love 24 perhaps as much as John Gormley and I've come to like this open-ended series finale since it aired. We never really know what happened to Jack Bauer. He was pardoned for his crimes in the USA. Maybe he was killed. Maybe he was imprisoned. Maybe he was recruited to help the Russians neutralize terror threats. Maybe he escaped. Who knows. The last you see of Jack, he is smiling, knowing his daughter, his grandchildren, Chole and Belcheck are alive and safe.

I will explode if Season 10 happens and not only does our man JB find some kind of closure and resolve, but the S10 finale ends with him at peace, properly finishing that chess game with his daughter or granddaughter.

Kind of a smart way to end it. Lets you use your imagination on whay happens to Jack. Is he executed, accpeting the consequences of his actions and knowing his family and remaining friends are safe? Does he break out and go on the run, ultimately escaping to live out his days away from his old life? Is he forced to take a mission from the Russains that only someome with his skillset can compelte, allowing him to continue his work? Who knows. It leaves the door open for any of that, rather than explicitly show an ultimate fate for him that risks being unfitting.
