Girl from Vietnam explaining why Serbian is hard for English speakers .... watched by Bulgarian, who catches 70% of the Serbian, but confused randomly :D
This is absolutely adorable. As a native speaker, I didn't think it possible that a foreigner could learn to speak Serbian that well. And yet, here you are. Still needs a bit sanding, but you're getting there. Svaka čast, i samo nastavi!
Well, regarding cases, this is something we learned while growing. As a kid you do not think "Oh, I have to put it in that case and in that gender". You just imitate adults. In the school, they teach you what they actually mean and how they should be used. But, normally, by that time, you were already used them properly, you just didn't know why. :-) So, (and I think this goes for every language that you learn), DO NOT THINK in your language, just use that new one. Like a muscle, your brain will pick up the logic, the accent and everything else. It takes time, but it is the best way. Also, the big difference comes as the Serbian is much older language than English, so it does have much more words and constructions. And today Serbian is actually much simpler than what it used to be. So, you are in the luck, bre !
Haha yes I am aware, I actually also said right towards the end of the video that I know that I just need to continue to practice, to speak, to listen and to absorb the language and it will come naturally to me one day. 😍 Thank you for your kind words
@@lizlearnsserbian I mostly said that from my own experience learning English and especially French. I could not stand the French. It was so illogical to me. But I had to learn it. So, I stopped thinking in logic of my language and was just using it (French). At start, with lot of mistakes. But after 2 years, I was able to write business emails, even think in that language.

I know that "lj" "nj" and "dj" that's also hard for kids when we learning to speak so keep doing great work and you will be great Serbian! Pozdrav!!😘😘❤️
I'm a Serb and I never knew our language had a word for Great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandmother. (You usually just use the prefix "pra-" as you would "great-" in English, or so I thought)
Naravno da postoje, samo što u realnosti ljudi pamte i tek poneko zna imena pradeda i prababa a kamoli dalje. Na moju sreću imam celo porodično stablo, tako da znam kako su mi se muški i ženski preci zvali. Ovako idu nazivi- 1. Otac- Majka 2. Deda- Baba 3. Pradeda- Prababa 4. Čukundeda- Čukunbaba. 5. Navrdeda- Navrbaba 6. Kurđel- Kurđela 7. Askurđel- Askurđela 8. Kurđun- Kurđuna 9. Kurlebalo- Kurlebala 10. Sukurdol- Sukurdola 11. Sudepač- Sudepača 12. Parđupan- Parđupana 13. Ožmikura- Ožmikurka 14. Kurajber- Kurajbera 15. Sajkatava- Sajkatavka 16. Beli orao- Bela orlica
Ovo u stvari nije tačno. U jeziku postoje kolena do 7. Askurđel, sve dalje od toga izmislio je pisac Milorad Pavić za potrebe svojih romana. Kasnije je žuta štampa pisala o tome kao da je istina, pa je ušlo u naš narod. Svaki školovani istoričar će ti potvrditi ovo.
Phenomenal video, one thing I noticed is that you often say "volim da" instead of "(zh)zelim" or "hocu". I think the mix-up comes from literally translating the phrase "like to", otherwise your Serbian is really good 👍
@@jelena5619 sreco moja ja sam svoju skolu zavrsio davnih dana a kamo srece da sam peti razred tad je bilo neko lepo vreme i znam sve padeze to je bio sarkazam i fora sto sam napisao
Hmmm, your number 10 is actually interesting. We usually do have to think ahead when we are talking if we want to be correct, though i never thought about it.
Maybe I'm just slow, but I've noticed that though this should come naturally to me as a native speaker, I actually do sometimes struggle to map out my sentences in advance, e.g. when I don't know what noun I want to use. So, like, with her "My favourite Serbian word" example, if I didn't know that I wanted to use the word 'word,' I would have to randomly pick a gender and then later correct myself if it turns out that the word I was trying to use isn't of that gender. "Moj... omiljeni... Moja omiljena srpska reč." Kind of like that. It seems like a fault in the language, but then again, this complex declension system is the reason why minimal context is necessary for each Serbian sentence. The meaning is in the forms of the words, like Liz said, which is very cool and helpful in a lot of situations. In my humble opinion, anyway.
When my parents tell me "it's in your blood, you'll learn it overnight" meanwhile this girl can speak Vietnamese, English and serbian. Pesky me can do german, english and the absolute bare minimum to survive a *very* shallow conversation in serbian... Sram me bilo (and yes I had to google to see how to change "sram te bilo" to refer to myself)
She speaks French too. Btw. "sram me bilo" is correct but a bit hard to pronounce b/c of the 2 m's. Serbs would probably use the subjunctive: "sram da me bude", which is literally "that I be ashamed (of myself)", with the meaning: I should be ashamed of myself.
5:31 "Kako da planiram MOJA rečenica unaprijed." - ovjde možeš koristiti povratno-posvojnu zamjenicu o kojoj si govorila u prošlom videu - Kako da planiram SVOJU rečenicU unaprijed.
Just so you know, it is not "Српски" it is, "српски", with a lowercase letter, because in Serbian (There is not such a grammar rule in English) a name that ends with "ски" like "српски", "енглески" (English) does not require first uppercase letter. Just so you know. P.S. I love your videos. Поздрав.
"a name that ends with "ски" like "српски", "енглески" (English) does not require first uppercase letter" A ha ha ha ha ha, gde si ti učio srpski majke ti ??? To je pravilo u srpskoj gramatici da se prisvojni pridevi pišu malim slovom, a ne imena koja se završavaju na "ski". Znači neko se preziva Jovanovski ili Stanislavski i to se piše malim slovom.???

This is absolutely adorable.
As a native speaker, I didn't think it possible that a foreigner could learn to speak Serbian that well. And yet, here you are. Still needs a bit sanding, but you're getting there.
Svaka čast, i samo nastavi!
Очень хорошо говоришь, спасибо за видео! Удивительно!
So, (and I think this goes for every language that you learn), DO NOT THINK in your language, just use that new one.

Sram me bilo
(and yes I had to google to see how to change "sram te bilo" to refer to myself)
😂😂😂
She speaks French too. Btw. "sram me bilo" is correct but a bit hard to pronounce b/c of the 2 m's. Serbs would probably use the subjunctive: "sram da me bude", which is literally "that I be ashamed (of myself)", with the meaning: I should be ashamed of myself.
