Hey Liz, thanks for the funny anecdotes! I had similar experiences. Although embarassing, it's also effective because those mixed up words had been instantly burned into my memory forever. My top 3 mistakes: 1. instant messaging Serbs writing: "Čao brate, evo ti pišam Tom." (instead of pišem; this whole pisati/pišati issue still haunts me today) 2. in a bar with a group of Serbian friends. The waitress asks who will pay and I go: "Evo ja ću plačati!" and the group goes: "Kako da ne Tom! Haijde da idemo do sledeće kavane!" (What's your experience with these I think quite tricky aspect pairs of verbs in the Serbian language?) 3. Standing in the kitchen of my Serbian friend searching for a plate (already knowing I don't know the word for plate in Serbian). He then asks me what I'm looking for and I say: "Ne znam riječ ali tražim ...tele." and everybody around burst out in laughter. (Out of embarassment I used the German word for plate i.e. "Teller" which to them sounded like "tele")

Even stranger were the weird looks I was getting. “Šta je to?”, the shopkeepers were asking me, as if they have never heard of a toilet brush. The next day my mother-in-law came home laughing. I am Serbian and since the first grade I had hard time learning English because I couldn't pronounce the words correctly because of the rule in Serbian "write it as you say it, read it as it's written." And we have 30 letters and 30 sounds so it was hard to me to pronounce the words correctly. It took me about...5 or 6 years to master it correctly because I was the kind of kid that if I can't do something in first 10 times I try it, I would lose hope in learning that and just find to do something else. Then for some reason (movies, books and the internet) I had the will to master English when I started 6th grade. My English drastically improved in 2 months and I then felt embarrassed about whining how hard English was. Then my friends had the problems with learning so they were(still are) callings me their 'teacher' because I know the English the best out of...let's say whole class. They had hard time with grammar while I couldn't find the difference between using might and probably in sentences. We would say 'it will happen' or 'it won't happen' or just reply with 'maybe' (I have understood after some time and then once again felt embarrassed because I didn't understand something that simple) My point is that you shouldn't be embarrassed about making mistakes because everyone makes mistakes sometimes and making a mistake is the best way to learn. (You will want to know what went wrong and how to correct it) I would be glad to help you(you probably won't need my help but I would like to offer it)

As far as I see, you are already on the next level where you can actually understand if some spellings are incorrect. Level after that is telling people that their natural language grammar is wrong (just noticing or even correcting them) and level after is watching domestic (Serbian) movies or listening to our songs without subtitles/lyrics, and just enjoying them for what they are. Nowadays I usually watch foreign (mainly EN/USA) movies or series with English subs because it's more natural to me than when it has Srb/Hr/BiH subtitles. (You will want to know what went wrong and how to correct it)
I would be glad to help you(you probably won't need my help but I would like to offer it)

This free-besplatna/slobodna part, reminded me of one time when I was in Canada, and I wanted to compliment Canadians I said like "you are soO simple people, I like that"..she bursted laughing but also looked at me like I was mad...I was like "what? what?!" (I wanted to say they are NOT complicated, easy going, easy to get along, but I ended up saying they were dumb) Two years later I was like "Ohhhhh fuck"
