Roughly, this trip would cost about 3x more in a car, and that's just the fuel, not counting tolls or city driving, really. Trains in Serbia were always a popular way of transport, but it has sharply declined in recent years due to them becoming more unreliable than a rusted 1970's car - often, they just wouldn't come, so public gave up on them. If the railway was in better shape (there are sections of railway in the south that have a 5kmh speed limit, you can overtake it just strolling by), and if service was reliable, there'd be no shortage of passengers. Looking forward to connection with Nis, as it's a bit of a longer stretch and people do it fairly frequently in a car, I'm sure most would be happy to do it faster and at half the cost.

Fantastic video. I would love to watch a few more from you. Maybe I can add a little more good information. Once completed Belgrade- Budapest will take about 2:45 min with border checks happening at the railways stations, so it won't need to slow down on the border. And currently, with EU support Serbia is planning on linking Belgrade to Niš (Serbia's 3rd largest city) and then to the Macedonian border with High-SpeedRail. If Macedonia builds High-Speed Rail (it's possible with EU infrastructure support) it will link the central European networks to Greece with HSR from Budapest. You could take a sleeper train from Vienna to Greece easily. After the HSR in Serbia, Belgrade to Vienna and Bratislava will take a little more the 5 hours. And if with TEN-T Budapest-Vienna (or Budapest-Prag) gets upgraded to HSR eventually it could cut down travel from the Balkans to Central Europe significantly. Construction on Belgrade station will be done soon (finally), it should look rather nice. And Belgrade will connect the station better in time. Belgrade also started building its metro system last year, Its metro line 3 will connect under the railway station. But that's a long way away, since building it takes a lot of time. Another interesting decision is the ticket price (less than half the price of a 3 times slower bus). It was a bit controversial to set it to low. Since building HSR is expensive, the low ticket price will not repay the cost in any reasonable time. But the country set the low price with the reasoning that giving access to more people will give more benefits both economic and social. I don't always agree with the government, but I think this is a smart move that I hope they keep implementing going forward with new HSR projects. Since I love trains and the planing behind it I looked up the logig behind Serbia's approach. If anyone is interested, there is a very interesting video I recently saw, from some small channel, about why it can be a good thing for trains to lose money, I can link it hear. Serbia is following the advice and I think it's good. Glad you had a good time and I look forward to your other videos. ruclips.net/video/ZBH7n8KtyMw/видео.html
What EU support? They can't build them for themselves. China has speed train network longer than the rest of the world combined. They exceeded last 5 year plan for more km than Germany has in total. They were involved in this section, doing probably the most difficult part of the job.
At the station you say that meals are not provided on the train. Later you actually filmed the menu on 8:16 (sandwiches). Everything else you say is spot on. Greetings from Novi Sad.
It would be interesting to travel all way from Munich or Prague, via Budapest and Belgrade to Athens. The trains are much more fun! I'm impressed with the look of this train, and the price is a bargain :) Well done Serbia! Travelling soon from JFK to Tel Aviv, with a 2-night stop in Belgrade. Not sure I'll have enough time to try that train :(
Actually those intermediate stations are served by the Regio Train between Belgrade and Novi Sad going at 160km/h and arriving in 57m. It's hourly, either SOKO goes or Regio goes.
A full and kind review from a welcoming foreigner. The railway system will, hopefully, one day connect other larger towns in the country. The project is just one of many being conducted by president Vucic's government in the recent years. Thank you for visiting Serbia, enjoying the ride and doing this video. Dobro došao (welcome). 🙂
When the construction of the new high-speed line to Budapest is finished, the "Soko" will revolutionise rail travel in the Balkans. Serbia is trying hard to fix its ancient railway network, and it clearly shows, but I do agree that Beograd Centar is nowhere near finished, which is a shame - Novi Sad and Novi Beograd stations looks so beautiful IMO. 😍 A note on the "Soko" trains: you said these Stadler trains are similar to those operated by DB and Westbahn. I can confirm that by close inspection, the train's interior and appearance looks *IDENTICAL* to Westbahn!
The train is based on Russian train model which Serbia had-have years prior to this one ... No clue of this Westbahn thing tho, never heard of it, will have to look into that model but something tells me seeing your comments this West-whatever sounds German and it's a typical blatant copy of a Russian train since Russia is known to build great trains then others copy them.
No, this is a Swiss designed train which has been operating in various countries for many years. Russia ordered a few of them, however their currency collapsed again and they couldn't afford them. Westbahn ordered some identical trains before Srbija Voz, and this is a follow-on order from their fleet. Russia has only built a few trains for Serbia, in the form of some fairly rubbish diesel trains.
Same as UK, on the KingsX to Kings Lynn line, the trains can do 100 mph but long stretches north of Cambridge the train does 40 mph owing to the crap track.
As a Serb I feel proud on Soko train. (And pissed off at the same time for the closing off the historical Main Railway station on Savski Venac because of this... Golf hole. ⛳)
Serbia always kinda intrigued me due to it having one language but two writing systems used interchangeably that share similar characters as well. I know Japan's even crazier with three writing systems but at least Serbia chose writing systems that doesn't resemble noodles :P
If you learn to speak Serbian, you could learn to read and write in 1 day, every single sound has a letter of it's own, and there are 30 letters total. That is Cyrilic, Latin is almost as easy with only a few sounds requiring the letter J behind an L and an N and D requiring a Z behind it. In Cyrilic, our language has the easiest conversion from sound to writing on the planet.

When Belgrade Budapest line starts, there will be no border controls, instead of that you will come a bit earlier to railway station to walk through security and passport check. Like at airports.
@@SuperalbsTravels both sides are already agreed (Serbia and Hungary) for that kind of traveling. With an hour or more long break on border waiting for passport control to be finished, high-speed rail seems pointless. The goal is Belgrade - Budapest 3. 15 hours ride. (total)
No border control will be a massive improvement, cause Hungarian-Serbian border has the longest wait times, in no small part due to lazy Hungarian border patrol delaying things.
@mobileprinting2876 China finances this, not Serbia. Moreover the trains that Serbia did actually buy were so expensive that they could get only 3, if you had bought trains from Croatia from Končar you could have had 10 of them.

I'm glad you took a train in my country! You're always welcome to come back to Srbija❣

Thank you so much! 😁
Nice video. Definitely will try this next time I'm in the country. Got family in both Belgrade and Novi Sad.
Lapsus... "I can link it HERE". 😊

Actually those intermediate stations are served by the Regio Train between Belgrade and Novi Sad going at 160km/h and arriving in 57m. It's hourly, either SOKO goes or Regio goes.

Not exactly, if I understood you correctly. Apart from a few 1 hour gaps, Soko departs every x o'clock and regio departs at x:30.
A note on the "Soko" trains: you said these Stadler trains are similar to those operated by DB and Westbahn. I can confirm that by close inspection, the train's interior and appearance looks *IDENTICAL* to Westbahn!
Agreed, they are very similar to Westbahn trains.
Because it actually is from a Westbahn order.
Yes. They were an addition to the Westbahn order, with most things identical!
Old blue soviet trains from 1980s are actually perfectly capable of doing 120kph(80mph). Its the tracks that are the problem
Golf hole. ⛳)
One can't trust his eyes. Approaching the Novi Sad Station one feels like in front of a university and inside like on an airport.
Serbia always kinda intrigued me due to it having one language but two writing systems used interchangeably that share similar characters as well. I know Japan's even crazier with three writing systems but at least Serbia chose writing systems that doesn't resemble noodles :P
Its common in some countries here.

Hmm, I wonder if that will happen. Doesn't seem easy, with a few hurdles to sort out...
@@SuperalbsTravels both sides are already agreed (Serbia and Hungary) for that kind of traveling. With an hour or more long break on border waiting for passport control to be finished, high-speed rail seems pointless. The goal is Belgrade - Budapest 3. 15 hours ride. (total)
