- This was a revelation for us...we were heading off for Panama and all of a sudden had a hot starboard engine when we really revved up the power. We were not previously aware of just how fast minerals can deposit in heat exchangers and how that makes the engine cooling less efficient.
Patrick Leclerc is one of our original Patrons...been with us since early on. Until recently he owned Trac Ecological, maker of Barnacle Buster and several other marine products that are safe on the environment. He just sold the company to....go cruising.
Anyway, this extended video is to accompany the main vlog video posted on The O'Kelly's Channel, and provides more detail on how the process works and how it helps the engine cooling components stay in shape.

Great Video! Glad the Barnacle Buster got the job done!
The product is phosphoric acid diluated. So as major part of the mineral acid it will eliminate minerals deposit and animals inside the pipes. The blue color is probably due the contact of the acid with to some copper part inside the circuit. (Copper phosphate). I would avoid to throw the used product to the sea even if it is said "safe for environnement".
I’ve always wondered if any cruisers used that stuff. I have seen videos about it but never heard of any cruiser use it. Came across it while researching about sailing and all of what’s involved. I did see where barnacle buster said it is safe to just pour overboard when finished. Thanks

that Barnacle Buster looks like some good stuff to have here in FL! BTW the rains are pretty much always in FL :) sea breeze creates it most days/nights and it can rain in the front yard and be sunny in the backyard :) be safe on the blue!

Nice vid. I'm getting ready to do this procedure next weekend. Got a 31' sportfisher that is having the same problem with the starboard engine. Only when getting the revs/speed up, do I have a heating issue. Already tried the easy route (t-stats and impellers) and no it's the Barnacle Buster route. Hoping we have the same luck as you folks. Appreciate the vid!
If there is material built up, one technique is to recirc crushed ice (slushy consistency is ok). Tho barnacles would not be affected. The ice may melt, which is ok. Do need a velocity of over 2 meters/sec for best result (strong pump).

When you switched from starboard to port engine, did you dump the bucket and start all over with clean water and more bottles of barnacle buster? Or reuse the existing product in the bucket?
In the video, the gentleman explained that the air conditioning system will clog more frequently due to continuous use. How do we setup an air conditioning flush? After flushing both engines, did you also flush the air conditioning system too? If no, then why not?
Guys I am watching your barnacle buster video and it find but you did not show where you connected the hoses. I have the Yanmar 30 HP engine. It would be great if you could tell me where you connected the in to start the loop and the out to finish the loop and bring back to the bucket. Thanks

Now since this is your tech channel, I was kind of hoping to see some videos on the electronic tech on Clarity (and in general) - like navigation systems; what's relevant/non-relevant (for you) what's good, what's bad in that whole arena (what are others saying) and importantly, do you have the skills to navigate manually if all else fails?

Is that stuff OK to put over the side when you're done or does it need shore-side disposal? Because I guess the acid is neutralised by the calcium that it removes?

Barnacle Buster passed the California fish toxicity essay test and is safe to go overboard as a new solution. Technically it should be filtered after being used as just like sea water, BB will pick up metal particles and those particles should be removed by filtration before being dumping the solution overboard.

You can use cola as well.
If calcium buildup is truly the cause, then vinegar with dissolve it. One does not need some special formulation to dissolve calcium carbonate, simply an acidic solution. And vinegar is acidic.
How often should you use Barnacle Buster? Annually, Might it be worth installing "flush systems" in the piping similar to "washing" the calcium etc out of instant hot water flush??
Industrial boilers, we had to do an annual inspection. So we did the calcium removal during that inspection. My boiler chief said the same thing about 1/64" on the sidewalls, and they were "death" on untreated feed water.

Geeeez that stuff's expensive. Homemade Barnacle Buster: 6 x 3liter bottles of Coca-Cola... Vinegar works too.
Careful with the Coke. The phosphoric acid does not distinguish between the calcium build up and the copper/steel of the coils in the heat exchanger. Tow truck drivers/mechanics use Coke to eat rust and solve other metal issues.
Vinegar will stop future growth but is not strong enough to remove calcium build up.
Another alternative might be CLR which eats calcium quite nicely. But getting the full system solution with pump, fittings etc. from Barnacle Buster sounds neat, sweet and complete.
@@kensmith6741 I like CLR as well.. The stuff is fantastic... Vinegar is more than strong enough for calcium though... I just used it to clean my entire cooling system in my truck.. A gallon is cheaper than a quart of CLR.. But put a piece of eggshell in a cup of Vinegar and watch what happens.
