Had NO clue what was happening until that last cut.... MIND BLOWN!!!
Haha! Appreciate it Yussef!
This is frickin genius! So much nicer than working with multiple pieces of tippet and trying to control your surgeons to try and get your dropper tag just the right length.
Haha. Glad it helps! Appreciate you watching!
Dude! Where's this video been hiding?? Hands down one of the best tips ever! Thanks again Cory!!
Haha…Been here a while! Glad it’s helpful. Appreciate you watching!
Genius, thank you! If only RUclips had been around 30yrs ago! Subscribed
Haha! Glad it helps, Thomas!
Fantastic tip! I am the worlds worst knot tier and spend and inordinate amount of time fumbling about while re-rigging. This is a game changer for me! Thanks for sharing!
Glad it helped, Joe! Tight lines to you!

Great to hear, Mason!
What a great tip. Thanks for sharing these. Like your pitzen knot video (which allowed me to teach my 70yo father to upgrade from his clinch knot), these videos really help me be efficient on the water. I really appreciate your content.
Glad they are helping, Austin. Awesome to hear your dad has upgraded! Thanks so much for watching. Tight lines to you and your dad!
Just subscribed...this is the exact method I use. Several months ago I watched a guy from the Spain EuroNymphing Team explain it for many of the exact reasons - speed and efficiency - I have used it on the water for the past three months of winter fishing, with frozen fingers on the GunPowder, YellowBreeches and Laurel Mt. Creek and every time it exceeded my expectations...your demo here is excellent and reinforces my newly adopted process.
That’s awesome Mike! Really appreciate it and thank you for watching and commenting. Tight lines to you!
This is a really clever and elegant way to set this up, thanks!
Appreciate you watching, John! Good luck to you.

This was helpful ! I will start using this method. Thanks !
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
That is SO easy. Thank you.
Glad it helps, David. Appreciate you watching!
Also, once you got that made. If you do one half hitch knot with your dropper line around your main line. It will force your dropper line to stick out 90° from the main. Which makes less of a chance for your dropper line to get tangled around the main line. Tight Lines
You are right Michael. It does pop it out at 90 degrees. Thanks for watching. Tight lines to you as well!
Wouldn’t that decrease the strength, just like a wind knot?
I know this is two years after this video but I wanted to ask you about this "reducing knot strength." Sure seems like a great way to get that fly our perpendicular to me! I love this video and your tip.
Dave it won’t reduce the strength and if it does, it is negligible. That being said-I don’t do it. If you keep your dropper tag in the 4in range (it the sweet spot), it won’t tangle.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Ahhh...thank you. I was so excited after tying this on some practice line. What a fantastic tip. Than you.
Simple. And efficient thank you 👍💯
Glad it helped, Daryl. Tight lines to you.
What a great tip!
Glad it helps, Mike!
Absolutely awesome. I’ve subscribed to your channel 2 hours now. And have learned to do 2 things more efficiently now. Really nice job. Thanks for sharing!
That’s awesome Preston! Glad it helped!
Hey so I’ve started tying my droppers this way. It’s super efficient. One negative I’ve found and wondering if you’ve found this. When I snag tying the dropper this way and I can’t get it out. I find I end up losing the whole rig and both flies. When the water is too deep to go wade out to pull it out.
@@prestongizzi2210 unfortunely no matter how you tie it or what knot you tie, the weakest link will always be at the knot. So it is either going to break at the fly or the surgeon’s. My only suggestion is make sure your knot is perfectly seated. Good luck!
Looks very simple. Thank you
Thanks for watching, Tom. Tight lines to you.
Thank you for sharing. It’s a great way to do it and I will learn from you appreciate it.

thank you for this tip. solves my problem
Glad it helps Stan!
Cory, not sure how I missed this video! I gotta tell you this one is definitely easier than trying to tie a figure 8 with my 70 plus year old guitar calloused finger tips on the stream with clear tippet& the sun & wind and a cataract obstructing my vision. 😂 Tony… otherwise I’m doing good😉
Glad it is helpful, Tony. I’ve also done w a video showing how to do the figure 8 with hemos. It’s here:

Cool idea thanks for sharing got yourself another sub
Appreciate the sub! Tight lines!
nice and fast way, we use it here in Italy, I suggest you to make a half hitch on the dropper with the "main line" to keep it a most horizontal and away from tangling , thanks ciao
Grazie Marco. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Love the half hitch tip. Ciao!
I use a small perfection loop at the end of my leader and attach my tippet with a small perfection loop to it using a loop to loop connect. Easy to add additional tippets when your gets too short and your leader will last a long time. I make small, 4” approx., looped droppers with a loop using stiffer mono, the loop makes up about 3 inches of the dropper with the remainder to the fly on 1 “ of a single strand of mono. . I attach this dropper above the loop to loop connection (acts as a stop knot) and put the fly tru the dropper loop, snugging it up. The dropper loop helps keep the dropper sticking out at a good angle. The dropper can be removed by loosing the loop, reversing how you attached and removes it. I have pre-made droppers to add or change flys as I choose. I carry a safety pin attached to my vest with a lanyard and use the pin to slip thru the loop on my dropper where it is snugged to the leader to loosen it and first, I use the Jack miller knot because it is easy and exceptionally strong or you can use a loop to add and make it easy to change droppers. You will still get some tangles but fewer than using a single strand to attach your droppers! I recommend two flys as the best number, one on the point and one dropper! I have been fly fishing and fly tying for 56 years! So far this is the best system I have come up with. If you choose to make droppers as I described you will need about a foot of mono for each. Tie your fly on fly first, I use a Jack Miller knot because it is easy and exceptionally strong or you can use a free moving loop to give your fly more action. Once attached, fold your mono and use a double surgeons knot to form the loop about 1 inch from your fly, cut off the waste and done! No tippet rings necessary! Good luck and tight lines!
Sounds pretty awesome, Mike. Tight lines and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the how too!
Sure thing!
What a fantastic idea I'm fishing tomorrow so I'll give it a go, I'll let you know how I got on. Cheers Colin.
Appreciate you watching, Colin. Good luck with it!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Gave it a go and I have to say it's brilliant so much easier than cutting and adding a dropper. Cheers Colin.
@@cwmitch2 great to hear, Colin! Cheers
I use this knot to make my droppers. I have problems with pain and numbness in my hands and this knot makes things so much easier. I finish the knot with a single overhand knot with the dropper tag over the point fly line which makes the dropper stand away from the point fly line at 90 degrees. Helps lessen the chance of tangles.
Cheers!
Glad this helps, Andy. And yes, that overhand knot works for sure. Thanks so much for watching and tight lines to you!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Hi guys. Any chance the overhand knot introduces a weak point in the rig? A potential break-off point? I really like the overall idea, and prefer the dropper comes out at the 90 degree angle.
Thanks fort the great vid!
@@patsheridan the triple surgeon’s is extremely strong when tied correctly (making sure you have a perfect figure 8). It’s over 90% and some studies have it almost 100% line strength. I have never had a problem with it and I’m certain you won’t either.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks Old Dominion. I'm wondering about the final single overhand knot to get the tag to a 90 degree; whether or not that adds a potential break-off chance. I just was out last week and had a nice trout break me off at the dropper tag - took the tag with him leaving me with the original point fly only.
Thanks!!
Oh…I personally don’t do the overhand knot. I find that if you keep the tag 5 inches or less, it won’t tangle. I do know guys that do it…I just don’t. Tight lines to you!
Brilliant 👏
Thank you Broc!
Wonderful. Thx.
Appreciate the comment Steve!
Genius!

Awesome
Thanks John!
Like it. Thanks
Thanks Terry. Appreciate you watching!
Looks good...when you need to change the tippet after fly changes do you start process again with 5' of line from the tippet ring?
Glenn, I’ll start the process over if my bottom fly gets shorter than 18 inches. If my dropper needs to be changed, I’ll cut a 10-12 in or so length of tippet off and uni knot it onto the tippet above the original triple surgeon’s. Just slip the section down to the knot. Cut off the piece going up towards your rod tip. Hope this helps and appreciate you watching and commenting!
The other thing with this is that once your dropper tagets too short as they do from changing flies, you can simply snip it off by the original knot and make a ne dropper with a perfection loop an attach it above the knot. It will also be adjustible as you can slide it anywhere between the knot and the tippet ring.
That’s true, Glen. I’ve done a whole video on the adjustable perfection loop.
I'm officially a fan Cory. That was great, Do you sometimes add your split shot to the tag instead of the top fly? I thought I noticed that in another video. If not are you placing your split just above your bottom fly? Thanks again.
Appreciate it, Pat! I don't use split shot. My flies are my weight, including my dropper fly. Hope this helps and thanks so much for watching.
This outstanding thank you! How are you approximating the 12 inches without a measuring device?
Thank you, Nathan! I’m just eye balling it and giving it my best guesstimate.
Wow super slick! For a dry-dropper set-up, I assume you put the dry on the tag end?
Exactly. Put the dry on the tag. Thanks for watching Pat!
Just subscribed, great videos! Do you have a video on making a leader?
Thank you, Michael! If you watch my Micro Leader video, I talk about it there and it’s also in the description.
ruclips.net/video/_LsHADwel28/видео.html
Appreciate the sub!
Totally Works!! Thanks. I like the 16-20 Knot video as well. Do you have a good way to tie a non-slip loop knot, ie: Krey Knot?
Glad it works for you, Matt! And the 16-20 as well. Here is how I tie a non-slip loop knot:
ruclips.net/video/1MGTgvAvm64/видео.html
Hope it helps and thanks for watching!
That a great selection. I noticed passing the line back through the last loop if you do it the opposite way as shown it will leave the tag end point away from the fly, which is super nice. I'm not concerned with catching grass in the river. I dont think it will weaken knot strength either.. Thanks Again,
Nice trick. Thanks Would you mind telling what nippers you use and would you recommend them?
Sorry I missed this! Much appreciated! My nippers are Ables.
Another great video! I’m getting ready to kick off my fishing season, and I’m brushing up on my knots. If I’m following your videos correctly, I think your preferred knots are as follows: (1) 16/20 knot for connections to tippet rings and micro leader to fly line: (2) figure 8 knot for dropper tags; and (3) Davy knot for terminal/fly. Does that sound right? And what knot do you use for tippet rings or leader to fly line where don’t have a micro leader setup, such as 15-18 pound maxima chameleon? Thanks, as always!!
Thanks, Austin! You are exactly right about the knots I use.
If you are using heavier mono, I would use a simple clinch to the tippet ring. To the fly line, I would do the same to your loop on the fly line (if you are keeping the fly line on the reel). If you are having it come off the reel and getting in your guides, I would do a nail knot and put a light coat of knot sense on it to keep it smooth.
Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Fantastic. Thanks. One follow up. Do you have any thoughts on using a micro swivel, such as the Loon version Devin sells, in place of the dropper tag knot? In theory, it would allow a more perpendicular angle for the dropper, and allow rotation, so less dropper wrap on main line. But perhaps there are major downsides that I haven’t considered (and that you have).
Great idea! Saves time. I was curious what your typical leader set up is? I am guessing your running a micro leader.
Thanks, Scott! I do run a micro leader. Braided core euro nymphing line to 18ft of 18mm Pezon & Michel mono to 4ft of 16mm bi-color Pezon for my sighter. Sempe is a good substitute.
I went with the Sempe. Easier to source than the Pezon & Michel. I ran your leader and crushed it on the Deerfield and Westfield. Thanks! Great leader.
@@scottgarstka2428 awesome to hear, Scott!
Very Practical, Thank you for the valuable tips. Am wondering about your euro nymphing rig formula? thanks
Thanks Tarik! My formula is as follows: I use a Cortland braided core level .022 euro line. I strip the coating at the end and whip finish in a micro loop. I tie to the loop approx 12 feet of 18mm Pezon & Michel flouro yellow mono (or Sempe), then 4 feet of 5x Hanak bi-color sighter to a Cortland 1mm tippet ring. (I cut my sighter so it is 12 in of orange on both ends with 2 feet of yellow in the middle). Then from the tippet ring it is usually anywhere from 3-5 feet of 6x-7x tippet depending on the depth. Hope this helps!
Thank you very much
Just saw this. Beautifully elegant solution. One question, though. What do you do once you've changed your tag fly enough times that the dropper is too short? Do you tie in another dropper with a clinch knot above the surgeon's knot? OK. And when the main line gets too short from from changing flies, do you add another long section above the surgeon's knot using a clinch knot, and clip the old main line to become the new dropper? And so on? Doesn't the area around the surgeon's knot become too bulky with knots? Thanks to anyone for input!
Glad you like the video, Arthur. When the dropper becomes too short, I’ll clip off about 10 inches or so of tippet and put it in above the surgeon’s with a Uni knot. It is easier and slides down to the knot better than a clinch. When the main line is too short, I’ll just cut the whole thing and re-rig. Hope this helps and good luck!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Many thanks for the speedy reply!
That is a cool trick! It's neat you can't drop anything because it is all one piece of tippet. I will try it out!
Thanks Justin! I think you are going to like it!
Thanks for the video. I'm at the age where simple knots are best cause my eyes are so bad. I'm about to head out on a long weekend and will be trying euro style nymphing. Is there a diameter of leader that is too small for this approach? Like - does a 7x tippet get all tangled up?
Appreciate you watching! 90% of the time I am using 6x and 7x. They don't tangle any more or any less than other diameters. The pros outweigh the cons in my opinion. Mainly from the great sink rate you get with the lower diameters. Hope this helps and good luck on your upcoming weekend. Tight lines!
Hey Cory - There's an even faster way (but potentially leads to more breaks up high on the rig) Just go down to where you want your dropper and tie a triple surgeon's loop of about 3"...so you now have tippet ring --> length of tippet to where you want your tag nymph --> dropper loop of 3" --> then remainder of the leftover tippet (i.e. to point fly). Now just cut one arm of the dropper loop near the triple surgeon's knot and you have a tag of 6". This can be rigged in seconds...
I have tried that way Greg....it is quick but I prefer my way as it is stronger and cleaner. I feel you can do this in seconds as well. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Agree the way you described is stronger. I like the way I describe for 4x and 5x, smaller than that the way you describe here is better for sure.
Excellent tag system. I like. But I have a curiosity: when the tag is shortened a lot due to the change of flies, to replace the tag do you make the whole tippet again or just the tag with some kind of knot? How do you do it? Thank you.
Thank you Jorge! When the tag gets too short, I’ll take about 12 inch piece of tippet and tie a 5 turn uni-knot on the main line above the dropper tag knot. Then I’ll cinch the uni knot down to the knot as a stopper. Cut the tag facing the rod tip off and use the long tag facing down for my fly. (Make sure you keep the longer piece of the uni knot on the bottom). If you watch my Poconos video, I actually show how to do it.
Hope this helps, tight lines.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Just great. Thank you very much for your reply and we always learn new and efficient things. You are a genious.
So true, Jorge. We can never stop learning. Appreciate the kind words.
