      Most importantly (IMO) no contrived controversies or inflated weak points. There was another (bigger) RUclips reviewer who was implying the Surface Laptop would make the SP5 redundant. Nonsense of course, as the laptop is clearly the weaker product caught in the overlap between the Book and the Pro, but I guess he had to look critical and make unique points or something.

    Lisa, you've got the reason they've removed the number wrong. It's not because it's a minor refresh, it's because the form factor has matured to the level that they can just drop the numbers going forward like the MacBook. Don't expect huge changes going forward because the hardware is almost perfect for what it's trying to be.

    • @SikSlayer
      @SikSlayer 7 лет назад +3

      Exactly. Having a number after the 3rd was stupid. Panos Panay even mentioned they realized their full dream for the Surface with the Pro 3. Every release since has just been iterations where technology allows.
      Panos DID troll us a bit by saying there was no such thing as a Surface Pro 5. : )

    • @superchristopher
      @superchristopher 7 лет назад +1

      I'm probably going to still call it a 5, but totally agree. There won't be much improvement after this. Just add USB-C and boom. And I'm not complaining about the USB-C. All I have that uses it is my Nintendo Switch. By the next one in two years I fully expect to the Surface Pro to have it and I should be ready for it then.

    I'm sure that buyers will appreciate the better battery life. I'm lucky to have my Surface Pro 4 last 4.5 hours of use mostly web browsing.

    Finally, Lisa will stop saying "it doesn't have tilt control". I'm surprised at how little coverage it was given. It was THE feature everyone, Lisa included, constantly complained about especially when comparing it to the competition.

    Always enjoy your reviews, concise, fair and balanced views. I 'm still using a Surface Pro 3 I pre-ordered in 2014, the best computer I ever bought and worth every penny, it's the i7 256 model and it's lasted well so these things are an investment - expensive though they seem at the time! I'd love to try the newer models but don't feel I really need the upgrade :)

    I am still wondering why I love Lisa and MobileTechReview so much. Presentation-wise, it looks very normal (tone, wardrobe) but the content and the advises given feels so honest. Actually the 'normal feeling' presentation also helps to give the idea that this video is about content and not about some flashy stuff only.

    I always enjoy your videos. I liked this one too. just a small correction about battery life. The 6, 6.5 hours you mentioned for SP4 is mixed use battery life, while 13.5 for the new is video playback. the SP4 had 9h video playback, so it's like 4h increase. maybe the new will have around 10h mixed use which will be fantastic. many thanks for your videos.

    Really awesome first look. I tend to get hot headed when new products are released (cause I want them all obviously) but I can always count on your channel to give an honest review/first look instead of just hyping up some new products. I have a surface pro 2 and have been looking to upgrade to either pro 4 or this new pro and you're right that the price tag of the new pro is making me hesitate. The new pen looks awesome but thank you for the reminder that other brands have had some really good progress in catching up or even overtaking Microsoft in this regard. The alcantara keyboard is very aesthetically pleasing (I must am very shallow when it comes to accessories) and the rounded edges are more appealing as well.
    I look forward to the detail review of the surface pro! :) Thank you.

  • @YEdwardP
    @YEdwardP 7 лет назад +2

    I think that Microsoft is purposefully keeping the prices high.
    They want to show-off what kind of devices can be done with Windows, but ultimately want their hardware partners to make, well, the hardware. The Surface line, from my understanding, is not supposed to compete with HP, ASUS, etc... who may come with products with either similar or lower prices.

    But most folks are willing to folk out $800-$900 for an iPhone and not think twice about it. It's just used for mundane social networking crap. This is a productivity tool that in my mind is worth the cost. The only drawback is how Microsoft is just going against its own good by not including USB-C ports in its new products.

    • @jed23ify
      @jed23ify 7 лет назад +6

      Julius Gashumba yea, at this point USB-C is being omitted so people will upgrade to next years product with USB-C/thunderbolt 3 for greater profits. It's ridiculous, and if they do this with the new surface book 2 releasing in October, They are shooting themselves in the foot.

    • @HullioGQ

      jed23ify I initially thought the lack of usb c was stupid but after yesterday's report that Intel is leaning towards thunderbolt 3 over usb c, ms may very well be saying you from buying usb c accessories for nothing.

    I don't trust their battery claims after the last surface pro. And I'd think that a finger print sensor would be standard for this price range. I do love that it has a regular i5 processor which is fanless

    • @superchristopher
      @superchristopher 7 лет назад

      It uses Windows Hello. And there's a typecover last gen that uses a fingerprint sensor. Battery claim, expect 9-11 light use guessing from previous pros being a couple hours below claim. Photoshop I'm expecting 6-8 hours.

    Been wanting one of these 2-in-1s for almost a year now. Finally took the plunge when the Asus Transformer 3 Pro was on offer for £650. Returned it because the battery was a bit meh, and the fan was always on.
    This solves both problems, much better battery and silent. Perfect... but almost £1500 with pen and keyboard! £850 more! More than double the price!? Jesus christ! I'll go with the Samsung Galaxy Book 12.

  • @rednafi
    @rednafi 7 лет назад

    a) 7 th gen is somewhat more power efficient that the older iterations
    b) core-m cpus have flexible tdp like 4.5 w, 7 and 9 w where as
    the core-u cpus have a constant 15 watt tdp.
    c) the battery is 11 watt-hr bigger
    d) low tdp means passive cooling is enough
    May be all these factors are helping to extend the battery life of core-m models...:)

  • @dbsasuke
    @dbsasuke 7 лет назад +1

    Lisa, what is your opinion on Intel's announcement today about Thunderbolt 3? Does this mean ppl should wait until next year to buy the next model Surface? Thunderbolt will now be part of the cpu starting next year, which means no more excuse not to have it as it is free of charge to manufacturers.

    I wouldn't call surface pro (2017) more expensive than the SP4. The starting price for the new Surface pro in Microsoft store is 799$ without the pen. The old SP4 initial starting price was 899$.
    So they basically left the price the same, it's just that they let you choose if you want the pen to come with the surface pro and probably will also allow you to choose the color of the pen as well.

  • @LadyJaeda
    @LadyJaeda 7 лет назад

    Thank you very much for the review. How did you feel about the palm rejection with the newer pen? I think you had mentioned that Wacom's palm rejection in the Samsung Galaxy Book 12 was better than Surface Pro 4's [and I may be mistaken there] so I'm very curious since with this refresh I'm strongly considering this unit.

  • @clouds5
    @clouds5 7 лет назад

    She's got it exactly right imho. If the surface pros are good devices is dependent on the price. When they first release they're just above what I'd call a good deal. So I'd say this is the perfect moment for getting an discounted Surface Pro 4.

    The best part about there being an updated Surface Pro is that the Surface Pro 4 is just going to get cheaper. There doesn't seem to be much of a reason for me to get the new one since the screen is still really sharp, the hardware might be old but still relatively good, and the heaviest work I'm going to use it for is some photo-editing. Can't wait for the new one to come out so the old one becomes an easier buy for me.

    Another great preview by Lisa! I am in the market for a windows convertible, and here in Luxembourg I can find the surface pro 4 (i5,8GB ram, 256 SSD) with the type cover for 1149€ (1€ =1.1$) while the new surface pro with the same configuration will cost 1449+150+100=1700€ (surface+typecover+stylus) . The question is does it worth the price difference?

  • @0ctothorp
    @0ctothorp 7 лет назад

    My problem is how much they charge for not a lot of storage, there really shouldn't be more than about 100-300$ difference between 256GB and 1TB especially if they're using standard SSDs.

  • @iKazed
    @iKazed 7 лет назад

    If that battery life is actual, the next iteration really only needs to improve on the IO and make the pen rechargeable, and if they care about it, improve the battery life even more. I would've loved if one day they brought a laptop dock that brought a physical keyboard and additional battery, but with the introduction of the Surface Laptop, that idea is probably null and void.

    Dear Lisa, guys I'm considering to get a surface But I'm a bit confused, I'm starting Master and I need it as well for photo editing and maybe video editing (4K), so where is the sweetest spot ( surface or not surface option) you recommend without spending much ( I'm in a budget(very)) that I can hang with for couple years?????
    So do you think I should do more waiting (save more)?? because it will be my sole machine for I while and like I said can keep up with photo and video editing but not overkill, so is it worth the extra couple hundreds?
    I need to wait couple months anyway before I get something.
    Thanks for making this review.

    • @89krx
      @89krx 7 лет назад +1

      Andrew depends on what you want. Note that the laptop ships with Win10S (WinRT2.0) so you would want to upgrade that ($50 if done after Dec 31). For the surface you would want to buy the keyboard ($150 or $160?). The bottom line is if you want to take hand written notes. The laptop hinge does not go far at all so the touchscreen is more like a gimmick. The surface does not have that problem. However if that is something you want you should purchase the pen ($99) or just get the older Gen ($60ish?) or any other generic N-trig pen ($20-$50) if art is something you don't care about.

    Hi, would you be able to do a review on Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 370? I like your review very much!

    Hi Lisa,
    You are great!!! I utilized your reviews extensively in my research for laptops a few months ago
    In future comparison videos, can you bring up any advantages that any Surface has due to the Hardware and Software being built by Microsoft while utilizing the Microsoft operating system, Windows 10? A friend steered me in the direction of the Surface for this very reason and I don't believe I ever saw this topic addressed in any of your videos.
    All -- I got a Core i7, 8G, 256 MB Surface Pro 4 in late December for $1,200 on Amazon. Looks like that price is still valid. I am very happy with the Surface Pro 4, got it for graduate school to replace an eight-year old Apple laptop that barely worked anymore.

    i am sitting here on the edge. about if i should jump on the new one, or go with pro 4.
    the new one here is quiet a bit more (i7 8gig model with type cover NO pen.) is 2.256$...an the pro 4 i7 8gig with pen an cover is 1.955$..so should i maybe just stick with the pro 4?

      beside the quiestion whas not about if i should get something else.but if i should go with the new one or stick with a pro 4

    The fact that the new pen is backwards compatible with the Surface Pro 3 is exciting because that means I don't have to buy a new one to get the tilt. I don't feel like the 256, 1024, 4096 levels are a big deal as long as the pressure range is well calibrated. The Pro 3 pen felt better calibrated than the Pro 4 pen pressure wise but the Pro 4 pen's nibs were a better feel with contact against the screen. Also the eraser function on the Pro 4 pen was kind of a wash as far as pressure sensitivity the button function on the Pro 3 pen worked better for me.
    If I had money to burn I'd buy the i7 iris graphics model although now the Pro 4s are gonna get dirt cheap and become a good value.
    I'll probably just see how the new pen works with my SP3 before I decide to upgrade.

    Hello, I am looking a quad core ultrabook for photoshop and cad applications. I want it to be reasonably priced, (around 1500 dollars), quad core i7, 512GB or above SSD, GT940 or above graphics, 16GB ram, 15 in screen in 14 in form factor, No heavier than 5 lb and at least 7 hours battery life. After searching, xps 15 met my standard, but they are too expensive and XPS's key travel is too short for me. I am still looking for new models and found lenovo Yoga 720 meet my standard. Do you want to do a review of this laptop and compare to XPS 15? Or do you have any other ideas beside XPS 15, razor blade, asus zenbook pro models? Thank you.

    Lovely product. But that pricing is purely 'premium' just to make some silly statement. That core i5/*GB ram/256GB drive is expensive enough without cover or pen, but the increments for minor improvements in cpu, memory, space are plain ridiculous.

    3:14 my surface pro 3 doesn't show the logo "Surface" on the right, how can I make it be displayed?

    No Thunderbolt 3, no go.. I was really holding out for the new Surface Pro. Looks like I'll have to compromise and get the Asus Transformer Pro 3 instead.
    Man, if only Vaio would release a second generation Canvas Z with thunderbolt 3. That would be my perfect tablet.

    15 watt Core i5, fanless? Weird. I'm thinking they used TDP-Down to make it a 7.5W part, and it'll act pretty Core M-ey despite being 15W on paper.

      I'd get the new one for one reason: battery life. Those extra hours could mean the difference between plugging in and staying mobile.

      Kaby lake has impressive battery performance. My only regret is that they didn't include an ultra-low powered 10 series GPU yet. I have a Dell with a 1050 and a Kaby Lake i5, I get 5-7 hours playing Indie games, that's incredible. But the best part is being able to boot up the Witcher 3. If nothing else, including a thunderbolt port would be good for an external graphics dock. At the price these sell for, the lack of included features is scary

      if price wasn't an issue, cause $560 is huge for me(including type cover and pen). I mean, if i really wanted battery, i'd go for a bigger screen, like surface book i5 8gb!
