Yes, finally today we are going to answer perhaps the most oft asked question we get in our inbox, a question that has been perplexing mothers, stoned teenagers and lazy comedians for decades: why do hot dog buns come in packs of eight, when hot dogs are (usually) sold in packs of ten?

hate to tell you mate but his problem wars eradicated in the USA in the 1980's. 8 and 8 have been the standard for almost 40 years, please cruise across that pond just once before you try to speak intelligently about our culture.
In the movie Father of the Bride they actually joked about this and I thought the way they did this was preaty funny.
Im going to weinerschnitzel. Its a hotdog fast food place in america
Because of money
I bet those meetings of the National Hot Dog Council are a real sausage fest.
I like you. ;-)
Roo Gww Wow, it must have had a lot of wieners too, right?
But what do they do? Sit around comparing each others' packages?
👏👏👏😆
Everyone just stop to ponder this fact a bit: There is a National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.
I'm more concerned with figuring out how i can join it
That's right. Be thankful we don't live under an authoritarian Sausage Dictator!
I never sausage a thing!
Thomas Koehler BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
I've never head this issue, the brands of hot dogs I buy (BarS and BallPark) both come in packs of 8 and pretty much all standard brands of buns in Kroger/Walmart/Safeway/Albertsons all also come in packs of 8.
Ballpark buns are in 6 packs
@@THEMystifiedRockstar hmm, I live in EU and where I shop the buns come in 8 packs but sausages (bratwurst or frankfurter) come in 6 per jar. Usually I buy 2 jars and eat double sausage hotdogs, the sausages per se are useful, the buns are not, so my aim is to finish the buns.
Yeah sometimes they match up, I was about to mention this.
You give the extra hotdogs to the dog of course.
Yes. Gibs me food, please.
Am good Doggo.

@Willem DaFuckedUp Go back under you're fucken rock, or to a Trump rally. Your stupidity isn't needed or wanted here.

8 wieners to eat 2 to play with???

Dr.StickFigure you forgot to mention that the only way to properly activate the antioxidants within the hotdogs is to slather them in bacon grease and a mayonnaise/lard mixture. otherwise the hotdogs health benefits won't be noticed unless combined with a strict potato chip and easy cheese diet.

The best antioxidant is avoiding endurance exercise. Health foods are a real PITA compared to that.
“According to the national hotdog and sausage counsel” I laughed so hard
I can't believe there's a National Hotdog and Sausage Council...

RIGHT??? I was NOT expecting that string of words at ALL.
This has litterlly NEVER been a problem for me, I've always had packs of 8 hotdogs and 8 buns
Me too
In the last 30 years I cannot remember ever seeing a 10-pack of hotdogs, only 8-packs.
It's usually those really thin ones nobody really likes anyways that come in 10.
Same ive never seen a pack of 10 hot dogs besides those huge 20 packs
8 hotdogs and 12 buns
Just buy 8 packs of hot dogs and 10 packs of buns. That's 80 hot dogs for 80 buns. Problem solved!
And fits serving quantity for one in US!
You can go with half a quantity of each and the ratio is still 1:1.
Subject,
Can you all make a video about talcum powder?,

The origin,
And what that stuff is made of??
Just wondering??,
Thanks again for all the great videos!!,

This is like one of those math problems we learn how to solve in elementary school
or you could buy 5 packs of buns and 4 packs of hot dogs...
In Canada it is less of an issue as packs of hotdogs are generally 12 count for standard packs and 8 count for jumbo hot dogs. The buns are sold in 8 packs for the roll style buns and 12 for the top sliced New England style.
Nelly P It's just hilarious how casual we are talking about hot dogs and hot dog buns and liking comments about such.

@Austin Giattino wait reboot?
I remember when Steve Martin lost his mind in father of the bride and started ripping open all the packaging in the supermarket lol
In Canada, we get bags of 12 buns and hotdogs in packs of 12.
Clinton Johnson Unless they're Larsen hotdogs. Or BBQ. Larsen sells like, 16 to a pound, BBQ dogs tend to be 8 to a pound. Then there's juicy jumbos with their 6/lb approach.
You also buy milk in bags, Canadians are just weirdos.
Yeah hotdogs in 12 packs, but around here (also Canadian) the 8 pack of buns go on sale much more frequently than the 12 packs and not all companies produce the 12 packs mostly just the larger companies.
Never seen a 10 pack of hotdogs though.
Sizukun1 I haven't seen bagged milk for nearly 2 decades
Whats wrong with milk bags? Takes less room in carbage + less waste.
"National Hotdog and Sausage Council" is the most ridiculous real council I've ever heard of.
My current theories on this topic:
-you can eat a sausage out of the package while the rest are cooking (eg: give one to your pet as a treat, etc) something as a kid I have participated in
-not everyone wants the bun (eg: picky eaters)
-you can lose one to gravity and not have spare buns (buns are unlikely to suffer from this event)
I remember this issue happening a lot more when I was younger... with 12-packs of buns and 8 hot dogs. I've found recently that most packs of buns have been coming with 8 buns in them now. So for us, the problem has solved itself.
By the bread corporation giving less and charging the same amount.
The actual answer to all issues.
They sell them in equal packs at my local stores. Odd.
same
They do everywhere, and have for quite some time.
Huh, get with it Europe.
Odd? Don't you mean... Even? (Dun Dun Dunnnnnnn!!!)
JamesyHerald no he meant it as a pun... a very clever pun at that
I don't understand this title. Where I shop in Houston, Texas, Wal-Mart, Kroger's, Sam's, Target, H-E-B, and Whole Foods, all carry Hot Dogs and HD Buns *both* in packs of 8. Varying brands may have more or less of each, but generally they're both 8 in a pack.
Yep, same here, I've live in Louisiana, Washington state, and spent time in Texas and Colorado as well, and I rarely if ever even see 10 packs of hotdogs, and it's usually some weird, expensive vegetarian hotdogs or something. All major brands of both dogs and buns seem to come in 8 packs....
HD buns??? Damn, I'm stuck with my standard definition buns!
brickman409 Haha. Haha. Ha. Funny. -_-
(seriously, i literally laughed out loud X-D)
They cleaned it up in the last 10 to 15 years so its not as bad as it used to be where you could find a disparity between the counts :(

This was my favorite question to ask my high school math teacher when she would ask if there ANY questions. I did it purely to annoy her. I feel like I should forward this video to her and say "See somebody could answer my question."
This was a big thing when I was younger but more & more, hot dogs are being packaged in groups of eight. I would never buy hot dogs because I hated having 2 extras but now I don't mind getting them. Last week I had some friends over and we decided to grill up some dogs. At one point someone walked by and grabbed one and ate it without a bun.....my head almost exploded!!!!

Hey dude chew gum during the Exam it helps...
Same I have an English language exam 2 German papers and a science paper

I've only bought hot dogs and buns in 8s... I didn't even know this was a problem.
lakhan911 I've never had this issue either I was wondering if it was just my area that did the 8 and 8
I live in Michigan and i have only seen hotdogs sold in packs of 8 as well, even jumbo ones. Footlong hotdogs are sold in packs of 6. And buns are always sold in matching quantities. The only exception is when you buy "party packs" of hotdogs that come in either 22 or 24 depending on which brand you get.
no you just don't have eyes, apparently.
When I was a kid, we only had the 10 hot dogs/8 buns arrangement available in the supermarkets. Sometime in the 90s/00s, you could find bun length hot dogs in packs of 8, which struck me as perfect. Sadly, I developed gluten intolerance not that long afterward, but it was nice while it lasted.
lakhan911 It isnt. You’re totally fine, and I mean that! 👍🏻

As a rural and impoverished child, our hotdogs and hamburger buns were "loaf bread"......if and when we had hamburgers or hotdogs. As a fifty three year old Man, I continue to use loaf bread.
I'm not sure I'd trust a canned hot dog
Why not? Before plastic packaging, they were sold in wax paper parcels. I'd say that a can is a bit more sanitary than what used to be. Besides...what canned meat do you buy for emergencies? Sardines, Tuna, Deviled Ham, canned chicken? It's all the same principle.
Both got no real meat, just flour and meat scraps, mechanically ground with food coloring.
Dodi Tov Vienna sausages.
Robin Hays Vienna sausages were my childhood lmao
I live in the UK and wouldn't buy canned hotdog when one can buy frankfurters in plastic much cheaper. Canned is for stuff that needs to be preserved for potentially long periods.
Well, now that I know the industry will not change because we are not complaining enough, I suggest we start a movement to make the bread and meat ratios equal, refusing to buy the larger bun packs, or buying them and then just throwing the extras upon the ground to feed the pigeons. When confronted with herds of extra large pigeons who cannot fly due to their weight, and the extra large pigeon droppings causing a slipping hazard; the industry, thanks to government enforced safety regulations, will then be forced to change the bun package to equal the dog packages, or vice versa. Problem solved.

Years ago I worked in the corporate lab for a flour milling company. We did test baking on a daily basis to make sure the flour was preforming exactly as the customer expected. There I became aware of a piece of equipment called a cluster slicer. If you are working with a cluster slicer, 8s and 12s are a lot easier to use while packaging than multiples of 5.
I was just re-reading Dresden Files and got to the part when Harry sarcastically asks this question, and suddenly this video! Turns out the answer really does boil down to "Because reasons"

Heinrich Himmler He films multiple videos in a row so two videos that come on the same day could have been filmed a week or more apart
He's a witch.
Heinrich Himmler being an adult?
The British accent really adds credibility to these lessons.
As an american baker I can give a reason as to why buns are sold in packs of eight. When making hot dog buns and brat buns, we make 3 rows of 8 for hot dogs and 3 rows of 6 for brats, because that's how many will fit on a full size sheet tray. Bakeries are usually very busy so when we look, at a glance, and see rows of 6 or 8 we know whether they are hot dog buns or brat buns.
"More on this in an upcoming video." Three years it took, but my man delivers.
*edit* Almost the same video, though. No hard feelings. Can't be easy to produce 74 different channels without repeating yourself once in a while.
It was about a minute of overlap before delving into the actual origins which weren't covered in this video at all, so i think that's fair.
I don't think I've ever seen a pack of 10 hot dogs, I've only bought packs of 8, but I only buy ball park.
luciaes Ball Park makes the best tasting hot dogs, ten-fold.
luciaes I've only purchased the 8 pack of ball park along with 8 buns so I don't see the problem people have
Ball Park is fucking disgusting. Oscar Meyer All Beef Franks is the way to go
The only brand I can think of that still does 10 packs is Oscar Mayer, and then it's only on their basic hot dogs.
I remember packs of 10 from 15-20 years ago... But not since.
"See, the thing is, life doesn't always work out according to plan, so be
happy with what you've got, because you can always get a hot dog."
Here in South Africa, hot dogs (we call them Vienna Sausages) are sold in pack of 30 (yes, you did read that correctly) and Hot dog buns are sold, (often freshly baked) by the dozen
The most popular hot dog packs for my country is either 8 pack (normal/jumbo) and 20 pack (jumbo (24 for normal)).
Hot dog buns come in 8 but 10 packs are sold in a popular bakery that sells the 10 for cheaper than your standard 8 pack.
Now we're asking the important questions
At my local grocer both the buns and the dogs come in packs of 8. I'm in Connecticut.

In Canada, hot dogs are sold in packs of twelve, and buns are sold in packs of six. It works out.
I've lived in Canada my whole life, and have still gotten 10 pack weiners and 8 pack buns. even bigger dick move if you get juicy jumbos and get screwed with 5 dogs and 8 buns lol
Every time I watch a Today I Found Out video, I end up down a rabbit hole of information I never knew I needed for hours at a time.
Easy fix for this: Go to Walmart. Buy three packs of the Walmart brand buns. Head over to the hot dog section. Pick up the 3 lb pack of hot dogs. 3 lbs of hot dogs equals 24 hot dogs.
I get hotdogs that come in packs of SEVEN!?!? HOW?!! WHY?!?! WHAT?!!; SOMEONE HELP ME!!!
Buy 6 buns then divide the 7th hot-dog amongst them as a bonus.
Buy some speggettii O's and cut up the seventh hot dog
Maybe someone stole one from the package.
cut 7th into 6 equal peices to make 6 bun length hotdogs
Buy too many hot dog buns and put them in the freezer. That way, you can just take them out as the need arises.
Although they might fall apart a bit... Just make sure to use a plate and you should be fine.
In Canada, regular hot dogs are in packs of 12 (still about a pound, 450g) and the buns are in 8-packs. Two packs of dogs & 3 packs of buns balances out. It would be nice of supermarkets to offer sale prices on those multiples at the same time, but I've never seen it happen. Jumbo hot dogs in packs of 8 (still 450g) are common, and make a perfect solution to the problem.
And now I'm hungry...

the extra hot dogs are for the dogs. They like them and never ask for a bun.
Amazing stuff! You do have a wonderfully twisted ability to report subjects without a raised brow!
In Canada hot dogs are typically sold in packs of 12. Buns are often sold in packs of 8
in canada both come in pack of 12
Only the top-sliced style of bun comes in packs of 12 and it is not common everywhere in Canada. I've mostly seen that style of bun in or near Quebec. In many parts of Canada, the side sliced buns (kind of look like a long dinner roll) in packs of 8 are the norm. I only noticed the mismatch issue when I moved to Ontario.
you made me hungry
Around here they sell hot dog buns in packs of 6 or 12 while hot dogs come in packs of 8, 16 or 32. You used to be able to buy hot dogs by the gram in grocery stores that had an in-store butcher but nobody does that anymore but the high-end specialty meat shops. :(

In Southern Africa, we usually buy buns by number. You go to the bakery counter and ask for x amount of whatever bun you want and they put it in a paper bag & price it for you.
Ooh! This is such an infuriating problem! I have asked this question to my husband for more years than I can remember. I think it's just a joint ploy by the hot dog companies & the hot dog bun companies to get you to buy more products until the numbers even out!🤬 Thank you for addressing this eventhough it won't change anything.
jesus christ this video : hotdogs are sold by weight so selling 10 makes it even for oz. and bakers tend to make batches of bread by 4 because of machinery and packaging
Buy 5 packs of buns = 40, and 4 packs of dogs = 40. There you go.
Bob Saget That’s lunch for Joey Chestnut. 😂
This actually goes with 12 packs of mountain dew vs mountain dew mini cans. Those tiny cans cost nearly 3-4 times more per ounce vs the larger cans in the 12 packs. Most people see that the little cans are "cheaper" up front vs 12 packs, so they go for the little cans. Even if they just paid way more per ounce.
"they would need a good reason" i mean having same numbers of buns and hotdogs is a VERY good reason.
"We dont compare package sizes"
Uh huh sure 👌
The true answer is that it was determined that on average kids cooking hot dogs over a camp fire will drop or burn 20% of the hot dogs. Do the math.
I just found out we're lucky here in Argentina! Both the buns and the hot dogs are sold in packs of 6 or 12.
In Finland they always do come in packs of equal number. Normally the buns are in packs of 4 or 10 and the Hot dogs are in packs of 10.
So, I figured it out, why hot dogs come in packages of ten and hot dog buns come in packages of eight. See, the thing is, life doesn't always work out according to plan so be happy with what you've got, because you can always get a hot dog.

"Multiples of four were easier than multiples of five."
Well, the problem there is that ten is an even number.

I have not seen anything other than 8 packs of hot dogs in years. Only exceptions to that are very large or long hot dogs which can come in smaller or larger packs respectively. Right now I have about 6 packs of hot dogs(nitrate free) from 3 different companies in the freezer and all are 8 packs.
One quarter of people (including myself) prefer to eat the hot dog without a bun.

Here in Germany, hot dogs are sold both in jars or cans, depends on the brand you choose, with the amount of six usually.
Hot dog buns are sold in packs of four.🙁☹
This is my favorite show on RUclips.
Simon make it's interesting.
You must be a savage to eat hotdogs from a can!
This has never been an issue, just a meme question. Hot dogs are sold in all kinds of different package sizes depending on what you choose to purchase and the same goes for buns. Lots of people eat hotdogs without buns, cut up in mac & cheese, etc. Lots of people eat hot dog buns with other foods. Brats, tuna salad, etc. This just isn't a problem and I've never understood why anyone even talks about it. I'd argue, in fact, that your typical household would still end up with leftover hotdogs or buns just as often if they were both sold in pack sizes of 8.
In a lot of supermarkets in Australia, you can buy as few or as many hot dogs as you want from the deli section of the supermarket. Problem solved!
Also the buns generally come in packs of 6 here unless you go to a bakery, where you can generally buy as many or as few buns as you want.
Ah, an age-old problem: extra hotdogs lying around with no buns to put them in.
This subject matter is right up there with "why do men have nipples."
I know a guy who has 3 nipples lol!
Men have nipples because during the embryonic stage the zygote begins as double x chromosome (female) then determination processes in the DNA either leave it (the baby is female) or changes it to xy chromosome (male) so all men started by default as girls until their DNA in the building phase said "no this is a male", hence the nipples.

I bought Lightlife vegan hot dogs, and there were 8 of them, just like the pack of buns. I didn't think they were all that great, but the fact that they matched in quantity was so satisfying.
Hot dog buns are a waste of money. Just use sliced bread. It's wayyyyy cheaper, taste the same as hot dogs (just looks different) and can be used to prepare things other than just hot dogs.
I prefer slices of bread over buns. Burgers are better on sliced bread, too.
