I’m sad that I almost forgot how funny he was. When I was a kid (now 58) my grandfather had that same type of stutter. He passed away when I was 14 and every time my brother and I went fishing we always say it like he would. “HHHay bu, bu, boys. FFFFEELIKE going Fi,Fi,FiFi Fi…. To the lake” I loved those day and the fun our family had together. Nothing was better.
First time Lewis saw Callas. He was so impressed by this routine that the same day on backstage he invited Callas for his upcoming film "The Big Mouth".
1965 I was 15 and TV didn't stay on all day and you only had a few channels to watch on a B&W TV. Comedy was silly but funny. Just look at how everyone adored Red Skelton and the characters he did. If you can remember the 60's --- you weren't there.
@@hindskn Charlie Callas was brilliant. His telephone comedy routines were basically exaggerated versions of Bob Newharts telephone routines. Both Bob and Charlie are brilliant. Also, Charlie sounds very similar to Lenny Bruce in terms of his voice. Bob had me fall of my chair laughing when i was young. Don Rickles lacked any intelligent structure in his comedy and was just an average joke teller Rodney Dangerfield would destroy Don Rickles in a joke telling contest.
I loved Charlie Callas as a kid!! Remember him from the Ed Sullivan Show and others. Can you imagine how bat shit crazy people of today would go if Charlie was the guest host of SNL and this was his monolog??!!!!
I remember this joke, but they were squirrel hunting. The last line was basically, well yes you got the squirrel, you were aiming at the whole damn tree.
I see routines like this and just have to wonder how much practice it took to get the voices right. All for a 4 minute-bit where Jerry Lewis thinks you're one of the funniest things he's ever watched.
I remember those days. Being able to laugh at a joke without the Twitter mob coming after you. I suffer from moderate to severe tremors due to a brain injury sustained in a car accident. I can laugh at comedians joking about tremors, as Callas did, who aren't being malicious. It's like the 15 year old kid who ran into my car with his parent's car. He was out joy riding in his parents Cadillac when he rear-ended me. I had never felt such pain in my life. But he was clearly upset at what he had done to me so I elected not to sue, even though I had a strong case, and my Doctor warned that my spine was now deformed and that severe arthritis would develop. It did. I was 28 at the time. I'm now 65. I hate it when I hear about how evil us white men are; the kid who hit me and caused me to suffer from extreme pain from then to now was black, but I've never held any animosity towards him. He simply made a stupid decision.
Charlie was totally a unique comic -Actually remember seeing this bit -still hilarious -don’t think it would fly in today’s politically correct atmosphere
What on earth do you see in this routine that would make it not politically correct? Lol just because it's old doesn't mean it's not politically correct.
If it's the Merv show I'm thinking of, Charlie must have followed Brother Theodore. The opening "German" accent was a dig on Theodore who had badly provoked Jerry Lewis.

Love Charlie, and loved Johnny Carson..........however, legend has it that Charlie made some remark or did something which got him banned from ever appearing again on the Tonight Show. Anyone know what that was? Just curious all these years.
Now that’s entertainment! What a class act! 👍🏻😍 Sadly, there are legions of offended snowflakes that would say it’s a “hate crime” against the “handicapped”…
The drummer should have drummed out the shaky hands guy shooting a bunch of shots at the end I will pray for America. Please pray for me. God Bless you.
As a kid I thought Charlie Callas was great. I would laugh so much my step father got to think I was mental. He asked me if I was so deranged as to think Callas was funny.
Charlie was a unique comedian, but I don’t think his shtick would fly in today’s atmosphere of wokeness and taste. I personally do not care for the Lewis. Callas or 3 Stooges type of humor.
never a big fan of charlie callas. 50 yeras later i thought i'd give him another shot. still not a big fan. but what the hell was jerry lewis doing interrupting charlie's routine? that was very unprofessional. not a big fan of jerry lewis either.
This is really hard to watch. It's just so lame. Maybe I'm just biased because of the plethora of funny material I've seen throughout my life. Idk, none of this made me laugh at all.

Charlie was one of a kind. We are still blessed to have him.

I was 8 years old in 1965. I remember seeing this very routine on this show. I remember I laughed my head off1
Always loved Charlie's sound effects.
Charlie Callas voice Elliott the Dragon in Pete's Dragon.
He certainly refined this routine over the years. A comedic genius for sure, funny as hell!
The joke itself wasn’t that funny but the delivery was excellent! Great comedian. 😷👍
HE WAS A TALENTED FUNNY MAN! LOVED HIM !
talent...way ahead of his time...just owns the audience in 3 seconds
Your user name is awesome btw
That speaks volumes for the 'quality' of the audience. 🤣🤣

@@ralph5450 good one! lol
Do you mean because it lacks any jokes? It’s not really offensive
Never saw his routines, just his acting roles on TV. This was very funny!
Who could ever forget Charlie one of the best!!!
First time I've seen this ... absolutely hilarious. Brilliant!
2021 and I still crack up.
"Marvelous , that was Marvelous" says Jerry Lewis to Charlie ! Wow even the king of comedy was impressed by that talented guy !!! Awesome !!!
You know, in a way Callas was paying homage to Lewis’s style of comedy. Lewis’s response was really classy.
I remember this joke, but they were squirrel hunting. The last line was basically, well yes you got the squirrel, you were aiming at the whole damn tree.
At the end Charlie bows deep for Jerry - should be the other way around though. Charlie is so much funnier.....
He was hilarious on the Dean Martin roast he played a former hit man
I just watched that hilarious video! Charlie's character, was Mr. Sinatra's former 'bodyguard'. That bit was EPICALLY PRICELESS!
Charlie Callas was part of Friends as their neighbor.... he made an appearance on Friends The Reunion
Brilliantly talented. This skit would be banned and protested today.

my mother would have merv or mike douglas on when i would get home from school and i would watch with her.
Damn! That tie could double as a SHOELACE!
Better than the narcissistic Lewis.

They don't make'm like this anymore x
Callas's nose always arrived several minutes before he did.

-don’t think it would fly in today’s politically correct atmosphere
Making fun of gun nuts has a long tradition. This reminded me of Dick Cheney's hunting trip.
I was referring to his uncontrolled, spastic movements
It would fly in today’s environment, as long the two friends are are labeled as Republican/Trump supporters. It seems that they are fair game.
What on earth do you see in this routine that would make it not politically correct? Lol just because it's old doesn't mean it's not politically correct.

He was a really funny guy who no mentions any more. Another one was Ronnie Shell
Young?! 41?!
Wow, that was a time when anything was ok and everything was funny. Different world now. Which was better? Up to you.

They should have made and marketed a Charlie Callas bobblehead.

At the end when he shoots 90 birds the first on should ask him how he done it.
He said - I aim for the one in the middle!!😊
Charlie Callas voice Elliott the Dragon in Pete's Dragon.
"Kid?" He was already 40.
Look at that mean-spirited jerk Jerry Lewis checking his watch in the middle of Callas' intro.

You've got to wonder how many today under 35 get that joke.
Epic
Jerry Lewis used Charlie Callas in some of his movies after this.
Was porky pig based on his voice??
Couldn't do that today - unless you were running for president.
