Considering that the Jack Benny Program was not in front of an audience and that Jack knew exactly how to time where the laughs would go, well it is even more amazing. Even I Love Lucy was done with an audience (somewhat to my surprise)
byron p - Many of his programs were filmed in front of a live audience. It depended on whether Mary was on, or whether a guest demanded a filmed show. All of his opening and closing monologues were always done in front of a live audience.
1930s "pre-Code" comedy was better, funnier, and more human, before censorship by moralizing blowhards came in, trying to preserve "decency" at the cost of humor. Jack Benny is fantastic, and of course got his start in radio much earlier than the 1950s, but 90% of 1950s "clean comedy" was soulless and forgettable. Be careful what you wish for, when you wish for censorship
@@CommonContentArchive Some great classics came from the Production Code era. Not all of them were entirely "clean" or "decent", but they were still generally safe for most audiences. @@kevinmiller1763 Thank you. When I think of the wonderful programs, live programs, plays, musicals, specials, with the greatest of stars, that we had, and then flip through today's program guide, it's appalling.
Most programming of this era was awful, but Jack Benny would've been hilarious in any era. Benny started in the early 1930s and was influenced by earlier humor, which is what gives his work the sense of humanity that it has. That's why we remember him, but forget 99% of everything else from the 1950s
The English horse 🐎 was a joke by Jack and the staff and Mel came up with the British dialect to create the distinctive sounds. Pure gold these two guys . Live free or Die 🇺🇸.
There's another You Tube clip from almost 20 years later with Jack Benny and Mel Blanc with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. Jack says the writers put the bit about an English horse in the script to play a joke on Mel. They thought he'd be stumped when he was asked to do an English horse. Instead, Mel said nothing and just went and did the English horse in the dress rehearsal as you see it here.
in my opinion, there have been several good actors/comedians that teamed together that brought laughter to untold number of people. Such teams as Andy Griffith/Don Knotts, Harvey Korman/Tim Conway to name a couple. But nobody could match Jack Benny/Mel Blanc for Mr. Benny's deadpan look and delivery and Mr. Blanc's different voices. This clean family humor is still funny in 2021; more so than the "comedy" made for today's TV. Other comments on this page indicates that I'm not the only person with this opinion. Thank you for posting this video. May these two gentlemen RIP.
I live in the UK. Only recently discovered these fantastic Jack Benny programmes on you tube. I remember watching Jack on tv, many years ago as a child. Mum and dad always watched him. I’m thrilled to be able to relive childhood memories. Seeing Mel Blanc in person, instead of just a name on the credits, now that’s a real bonus.
What an honor for Mel to have the comedian's comedian, Jack Benny, trying to stifle his laughter at his performance. Happened just about every time they interacted on the show. You can tell Jack loved working with Mel. Jack was the quintessential straight man whose expertise was making other people get laughs at his expense.

That was my thought watching this as well. "Stanley" comes out and he is getting laughs just by his very presence, before he ever uses his voice. That's talent, charisma, star power. RIP Mel and Jack
Thanks so much for posting this. I had the episode on VHS years ago and lost it. The "electric organ" bit cracks me up every time. I don't remember seeing Mel do that anywhere else.

Great to see him do all the dog "voices" you only hear on the LT's. Also love the "Rubber Band" he does here as "Electric Organ" and Jack's car. 😀😎🤓✌🏻✌🏻
When Mel was doing the dog imitations, I pictured the cartoons in which I heard them; like the dog with Foghorn Leghorn, and the puppy with Claude the cat.
So much great TV through the 50's and 60's I'm glad I got to grow up with it, I don't know what happened from the 70's on up. They got raunchy I think.
