my mom and I met him in Atlantic city as soon as he walked into the restaurant he had everyone hysterical laughing. my mom got he's autograph we loved him
Charlie Callas was the comedic ancestor of Robin Williams..... a lovable unstoppable KOOK who always drove in 5th Gear with the pedal to the floor. ... I LOVED HIM when I was 10..
Carson really was just so good. I can't believe the rumours I have seen of a rift between these two. Charlie knew he wasn't hitting his usual absolutely hilarious form, and Johnny let him try and get it back.
Ah, when Charlie told of the Japanese audience members' reaction to "Midway" reminded me of attending "Tora, Tora, Tora" with my friend, a Vietnam War vet---and his Japanese wife! He and I were afraid her mournful, O-o-oh" whenever one of the attacker's planes were shot down would get us lynched! Great stuff, thanks for posting it!
I saw Tora, Tora, Tora opening week at Grauman's Chinese Theater. The Japanese in the audience actually yelled, "Tora, Tora, Tora!" four times during the movie. It was not subdued.

I used to love this guy when I was about 11/12. I knew him as 'Captain Weird'. He was hilarious! Can't help wondering if he didn't inspire Rowan Atkinson as Mr Bean. There are some very 'Bean' expressions in this.
I love RUclips. Read comments from Top Rated side, - adoration. Read them from Most Recent, - ridicule and hate. The same guy. How time flies when society keeps shifting its ideas on 'funny'.
No. If you want to see the original Robin Williams, then watch the Carson interviews with Jonathan Winters. There is even one with Winters and Williams on Carson at the same time. Jonathan Winters was Robin Williams without the cocaine, 40 years before Williams was ever on TV. Their acts were so similar, it is a bit spooky.
I am now 55 and would agree and also Jonathan Winters too + " the blow " made him like Woody Wood Pecker !! I did it too and that's how it made you feel ! The 80's, WOW !
@@TheFishdoctor1952 There's nothing hard to say about it. The question wasn't who was the best. Can't you read? Jonathan Winters was doing the same comedy style as Robin Williams 20 years before Williams. Obviously there are differences, that's why the videos of them together are important to see.
A few years later, Charlie was on the Tonight Show. Another guest was Jean Marsh. He bombed so terribly; it was embarrassing. Jean Marsh forced a few sympathetic laughs but the audience was dead silent. I don't think he was ever back on the Tonight Show and I didn't see him in other TV after that. It was strange because he always did well before. Maybe a gypsy woman put a curse on him.
They say Charlie callas was kicked off the tonight show for shoving Johnny carson during a comedy scene. That is a total flat out lie and there is no proof of that anywhere . I looked into it and other tv journalists looked into it and nobody cant find any evidence of that anywhere. I have a different theory on why Johnny carson didnt invite him on the show anymore. NBC network was taking a very special interest in Charlie Callas . Charlie was a number one guest there , invited all the time, and Johnny carson felt his career threatened by that . So Johnny carson fabricated this lying story that Charlie shoved him. B.S ..There's no evidence of that anywhere . The real motive was something else.
That story is an urban legend that has been debunked by Dave Gaysunas from Carson Entertainment....google "awkward moments in entertainment history: Johnny Carson vs. Charlie Callas"
+75350v8. I have a different theory on what might of happend between Charlie and Johnny . I think Johnny fired Charlie from the show because Charlie was a threat to johnny's career . That's how funny Charlie was . The tv network was inviting Charlie on the show all the time and regularly, Johnny noticed this and said " No way, let me fire this guy now before they get rid of me " . That's what I think . I don't believe Charlie shoved , pushed , or put his hands on Johnny in any way . Charlie was incredibly funny and a well mannered guy .
Carson was very insecure..he felt so many were after him and had low self esteem...never could please his cold mother...Carson loved to hold grudges...
Will anyone ever know the truth about that? I haven't heard of it myself. I don't really believe that unless proof has been supplied by a credible source.

I remember staying up late as a kid to watch Johnny. When Charlie Callas was on I never thought he was any funnier than any of the kids I knew who acted silly and made odd noises. He just wasn’t very funny. But so figured, since he’s on Johnny Carson, I guess he’s funny? He wasn’t. Later on it came out that Johnny didn’t care for his comedy and wished he would do something new for once. This supposedly was his last appearance. Johnny couldn’t stand him any more and banned him after this.
fish doctor clean or not, this is not funny in any era. I grew up during this time period and this is just boring trash. There’s a reason I don’t remember him.
@@dethengine gotta agree with you. this is really bad. and "clean" doesnt have anything to with it. the whole thing is really low iq and there arent even any jokes. its just an old dude acting like a 5-year-old.
Charlie Callas is what the World needs now in 2024.
And 2024!
@@marklentine8793 Thanks - I just updated the year.
Saw Charlie Callas live on Carson being in the audience. This is exact show. What a privilege it was.
Charlie Callas is a comedy legend. Period.

I used to love watching anything with Charlie Callas in it and he would make all those weird noises.
Sadly most don’t know him today.
He was hilarious spontaneous.
If you see Robin Williams you’d be right.
No is was always this rehearsed unfunny crap. He was horrible and there is a reason other comedians make fun of him still today
Robin Williams didn’t hold a candle to Charlie Callas
No one could

An undeniable genius.
Loved his and Carson's imitation of George Jessel at the end of that clip.
Charlie Calais was a very favorite comedian of mine along with Jackie mason they made me laugh and that is my choice
When I was a kid I would laugh so hard listening to Charlie that I would end up on the floor literally.
He did play well in hospitals with head injury patients
true entertainment- guy was a genius
He killed every time, even if things went awry, he would cover it and make it even funnier.
Loved him!! Still Hilarious!!
This was comedy and entertainment before Political Correctness! What a glorious time it was to have a sense of humor.
Saw him on Carson while in the audience. Still remember it like it was yesterday.
Charlie Callas was great.
His roast of Joan Collins on the Dean Martin roast was hysterical! He was all over the floor!
He must have been a huge Sid Caesar fan. I would loved to have seen him work with Caesar, Winters and Williams. Gut-busting one-upsmanship!
Carson really was just so good. I can't believe the rumours I have seen of a rift between these two. Charlie knew he wasn't hitting his usual absolutely hilarious form, and Johnny let him try and get it back.
That was just great entertainment.
Now thats show bis ...min props max entertainment ..thank god for youtube
