      Now the most important question, copper or white?

      White, but i am thinking about replacing it with sth wooden in crema-color! Can you make a test about isolating the Appartamento with Armaflex or something like this? It should be an easy and useful upgrade...

    taste test? steam power test? its easy to find the specs and features, as coffe nuts am sure u could tell us a description of flavors on a double.shot taste test. ans maybe how quick or how nice they froth milk.. just an idea.

    im very new into this but have fallen deep into the rabbit hole. so purchased a sage (breville) barista touch but sending it back already. Can't even get the water through the group head/empty portafilter above 62c, tried everything and settings cranked all the way up. seems like a lot of others had the same issue. instantly look towards an upgrade on the oracle touch but its very expensive and pretty automatic. I'm thinking I will want more control as become more experienced and these two seem like a good option. leaning towards appartmento. looks quality.

    I bought a Rocket Apartamento based on your reviews, SCG, and I’ve been extremely happy with it for the past four years. Amazing machine and beautiful to look at. It pulls great shots. You can put the electrical plug on a timer, which is what I do, so it’s on and heated in the morning. The other bells and whistles of the Breville don’t seem necessary to me. I guess the BDB is easier for newbies but honestly the Apartamento is super easy to get good shots on quickly if you have a good grinder.

    A little late to comment, but was the steam temp cranked up to the max (185°F) on the Breville to show the "strength" of the steam? Crazy strong steam when all the way up. For small pitchers it is really nice to adjust the steam temp on the Breville as you can create great texture much more easily. Rocket looks great on the counter and is a showpiece whereas Breville is a pragmatist's coffee machine. I've had one for 6+ years and the thing that really matters to me is great coffee. The Breville delivers. Would recommend to anyone who wants a solid machine that focuses on great product and not overly concerned about aesthetics.

      I had my BES920XL since March of 2018. Don't have any issues. I love the auto startup/shutdown. Very easy to use. The best part, its about $600 less than the appartamento. Taste will depend greatly on how fresh are your beans before you grind them and how well you maintain your machine. I even make my own milk and the steam frother is fantastic.

    Appartamento is my dream espresso machine. I currently have a Barista Express which does a great job but Appartamento combined with a good grinder would be next level. La Marzocco Linea Mini is too much, over the top; Appartamento would be the right one for me.

    Love the look and sturdiness of the Italian Espresso machines (Rocket, Bezzera, ECM, etc) but never have been able to justify the price jump. 10 years ago I started with a Breville single boiler machine, and then graduated up to this two boiler Breville BES920XL 6 years ago and have been very satisfied since (unlike the review below). I still want an Italian E61 Grouphead SS Italian machine, so continue to save 'Lira' towards that. But very happy with my Breville and its mix of manual & automated functions! And that BIG water reservoir is very, very nice!

      That's actually debated but I've noticed most people lean towards counting from the minute the pump turns on. I start counting immediately when I turn on the lever to my appartamento and some of rockets machines with built in shot timers do the same. I've always had way better results with this method as it makes more sense to me

    The downside of a dual boiler is that the water from the water dispenser comes from the steam boiler , it has a “mineral” taste which makes it impossible to use for Americanos.... is it the same thing with a HX machine like the appartamento?

    Great demonstration and comparison as usual. Huge price difference here in Australia.Been using the dual boiler for many years and little problems are occurring here the plastic puck has been cracks and needed replacement. ow a leak has occurred around the housing and the whole housing unit needs replacing resulting in a $300 repair. Great machine otherwise and will replace in a heartbeat to a Rocket if Dual Boiler DOA.

      Was just looking at the Rocket Appartamento as I am not familiar with this brand. It’s around A$2,900. I picked up the Breville BES920 about a year ago for under A$900. This is my second Breville Dual Boiler after my first one (BES900) started to leak (group head) and operate a lot less reliably after 6.5 years. Unfortunately it was deemed uneconomical to repair. I think they make good espresso and the BES920 is some improvements (e.g. ability to descale), but I’m expecting max life of 7 years.

    I'm drooling over that Rocket. I occasionally see an open box 920XL for sub $1K. It's always extremely tempting, but as the owner of an older gen Breville I know I'd regret it. The DIY repairs, wear, and leaks have put me off. Do you ever have refurb Rocket models available? Is there a call list I can get on? I just can't afford a brand new Rocket at the moment, but I'm fine with dings/scratches. Please reply!

    • @safaull
      @safaull 8 лет назад +2

      FWIW, my understanding is that Breville, fixed the some of the issues/problems that the older 920XL has. I'm looking to upgrade from my Silvia to a 920XL soon. Love the look of the Rocket, but having a dual boiler and PID is a hard requirement.

    • @IanLandesman
      @IanLandesman 8 лет назад +1

      Keep the Silvia. You'll probably go back to it... My Breville melts it's logic board's solder joints under normal standby temperature. I keep it unplugged when not in use to prolong the inevitable... I don't mind DIY fixing, but I get annoyed with repeat failures. When Gail says "This machine will last you YEARS" in reference to the Rocket, I melt like my Breville's logic board!!!

    • @hblockx16
      @hblockx16 8 лет назад +4

      You cannot compare them at all. PID is no "hard requirement", the Rocket-machines are awesome in keeping the right temperature. The real difference between both machines: Breville lives 4 years, Rocket 30 years. Breville loses half its value after 2 years, the Rocket maybe 15% and stays there for years.

    2 months ago i bought the Breville Barista Express after hours and hours of watching this, that and the other machine videos. (bought a smart toaster from breville 15 yrs ago, and it still works like a boss) ... at these levels, $599CND for the Express and $1399CND for the dual boiler ... unless you've had a bad experience w Breville, and certainly as a 1st timer, i can't imagine spending any more money unless you literally have it to burn... once the Express is dialed in with a quality roast, the steaming is the only thing i'd consider upgrading ... and maybe the 58mm portafilter...for a novelty, but for taste, the shots i pull on the express seem identical to the well-equipped cafe i normally go to..

      Breville dual boiler is what I would consider the top end for pure consumer machine. Any of these E61 Italian machines are purely in the hobbyist range where it’s more for the fun of it. For myself I also got a dual boiler and it meets my need of making a cafe-grade coffee quickly for me and my family.

      not really an accurate metaphor, rocket is much more durable than breville. check out the review of breville on "product review", many consumers complaint about the poor quality of breville, saying it's good when it works. it's understandable, because breville is all whistle and bells, too much tricks make it fragile.

    Hi Gail and other guys and gals at SCG , I wanted to know your opinion on this ( If its not so much trouble) : Which one of these two would you choose for a small coffee ( 4 tables - 20-25 chairs ) in a city that people are not really familiarized with coffee yet ? Tbh the reason I am going with these kinds of home machines instead of more commercial ones is one budget and that I am spending a bit on 3rd waves anyway which one would you suggest ?

    • @IMAWriterRobJ
      @IMAWriterRobJ 5 лет назад

      The Breville is a HOME/consumer machine. Not meant for commercial usage. HX machines must be flushed prior to every shot, and temperature stability is not nearly that of a commercially built double boiler. You need to consider a Commercial machine. SCG prolly has a 1/2 dozen that would work for you.

      The Rocket Apartamento needs about 30 mins where I live for the group head to be full heated. You can speed it up a bit by pouring hot water on it. I put it on a timer where the plug goes into the electrical socket so it turns on in the morning before I need it.

    is there any difference between double boiler and heat exchanger or is it just different wording another way of saying double boiler

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  8 лет назад +4

      A double boiler is just that, two boilers. One dedicated for brew and one dedicated for steam. A heat exchanger has one large boiler for steam, and a tube that runs through the boiler. When you brew on a heat exchanger, fresh water is pulled through the tube (which is calibrated to heat the water to the specific temp in the time it takes to go through the tube). This is why you should flush on a HX, as water that is sitting in the tube will be too hot to brew with!

      @Tom R I've had the Breville Dual Boiler BES900 for 9 years although it was in storage for about three years. It failed after about three months of use, Breville Australia said they would replace it if we returned to Oz, but that never happened. Been to a Sage dealer in the UK twice as it's the same machine basically. I have just replaced the Steam boiler valve myself and the group head seal, now the LED display has gone and it is leaking steam internally. Sage dealers would service it as it's a Breville from Australia. So I would say overall it makes good coffee and have been using the manual setting for a while now, but it has simply been one fault after another. Not sure I could say it has been a good purchase, so I now have a dead machine and looking for a replacement - considering the Rocket just doing my research for a replacement.

    • @Elfin4
      @Elfin4 3 года назад

      @Tom R Yeah I think they are probe to steam leaks and seals failing. Early machines like the one I have the BES900 are unable to be descaled easily, changed on newer models. I'm thinking of now getting a Bezzera Magica as a replacement, a more of a Prosumer unit.

    How does a heat exchanger work?

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  8 лет назад +3

      At the basic level, there is a large boiler that heats to steam temperature. This boiler has a pipe that runs through the center. When brewing, cool water is pulled through the pipe and is quickly heated to brew temperature. The amount of time the water spends in the "boiler pipe" is directly related to how much heat is transferred!

      now I think I would choose the breville just for the sake of its convenience, I don't want to wake up in the morning and start counter every time i make an espresso, I want to programm it once and then just press a button and enjoy.

      Hi Antonio! As Gail mentions, each machine has its benefits. The dual boiler has a handful of additional features that the Appartamento lacks. However, the Appartamento is built with a stainless steel casing and showcases more traditional espresso machine features. When properly kept it will last you for many, many years!

    Only thing that is useless in this review is the use of ounces.I grew up with pounds and ounces from the English Imperial system then we chained to the metric system which for people who have a decimal number of digits makes complete sense.Most tanks are filled by reference to volume. I understand gallons and quarts and even that the English and American gallon is different but cannot understand why that system is still used.16 ounces in a pound 14 pound in a stone completely irrelevant when most people count with ten fingers from birth.I think along with Myanmar Liberia there aren’t many countries Except American that stick with ounces when talking about volumes.

    Stay away from SCG--My Appartamento failed after 6 months while under warranty, I had to pay to return it for repair and when I got it back after 5 weeks it had the very same problem---boiler would not heat. SCG refused to exchange or credit, demanded that I again return machine for repair, this after multiple unreturned calls. Unfortunately with SCG the experience is like interacting with your local car or real estate salespeople--- its only about the transaction and never about the service. Buy your machine locally or from another online vendor and avoid my frustration. As far as the Rocket---it was great, when it worked.

      @@martinkulik9466 I have no connection with SCG, nor have I ever purchased from them. That said, I think your comment is a bit unfair. Yes, SCG is a bit "homespun", but many folks feel comfortable with the more consumer oriented approach.

      Semi-automatic perhaps? It doesn't really seem like an issue, but I'm guessing a lever machine brings to mind full manual machines like a traditional La Pavoni.
