“If you’re nothing without the suit, then you shouldn’t have it.”
Love that line, especially knowing that Stark himself had no Iron Man suit in his first movie and had to rely on what he already knew in order to survive. He’s speaking from real experiences in not having it.
Plus iron man 3 where we crashed it too
@@SScozzari I was thinking about that one a bit too, I guess the difference is just that in the first movie he had no Iron Man suit at all by the 3rd one he did have one even if he lost it for a while

what does that line mean
The fact that, even though Peter clearly has so much more physical power compared to Tony himself, and yet still being intimidated by him, says alot about having respect, and mental dominance.
I'm kinda lazy but how did this Peter get his physical power?
Is he really nothing without the suit?
@@austflett8614 The radioactive spider that bit him gave him increases strength.
@@austflett8614 Same way all of them do. The spider that bit them enhanced everything: strength, speed, agility, and sensory.
Though it is weird that this is the only Spider-Man we don't see actually get bitten. They just gloss over it when they introduce him.
@@danielwilson7193 cause theyve already done his bacstory 2 times before, they dont want to bore ths audience again with the backstory. Like you said, thats how all spidermen get their powers, no need to show that for the third times Besides, his 1st appearance into the mcu was in civl war, if he had just gotten bitten and started to learn about his powers, then it wouldnt make sense for tony to reqruit him
Too long didnt read: they already shown the other spidermans backstory twice, so theirs no point in showing it a third for a movie hes not the main character in
I love how Tony intimidates him, not Iron Man. Also how he says if he needs the suit he shouldn't have it, Tony has shown many times that he can jump into a situation or handle himself without a suit. He's a true hero!
A lesson Tony learned in Iron Man 3, which just fits with his character. He learns from his mistakes and evolves as both a good person, and a better hero. Tony probably feels he learned this lesson way to late since becoming Iron Man for the first time. Its also a nice mirror to Cap who already knows this. It doesn't take being the best, but being a good person.
I mean he had to fight terrorists and break free from them before he even became iron man.
Correct. The suit is just tools and support, not basic strength. Peter is only 15 and hasn't fully understood yet.
If Peter doesn't know how to use his powers and how to fight through adversity, then the suit won't help anything. After all, he has superhuman strength, the ability to walk on walls, and spider sense. He must use his brain and use the environment to his advantage. He must also know his weakness. It's like the difference between a noob and a pro player.
"God, I sound like my dad." The moment Tony realizes that maybe his dad was not as bad as he made him out to be.
I agreed, this scene probably the turning point where Tony wish he could go back and interact more with his dad (which kind a granted in Endgame)

"I just-I just wanted to be like you"
"... and I wanted you to be better"
That line just hits so hard for me
I don't like the idea of Peter wanting to be like Tony. He should be trying to be like Uncle Ben but Jon Watts doesn't seem to understand his importance to the Spider-Man mythos.
@@vetarlittorf1807 I don't think he doesn't understand I honestly feel like Tony is like Marvel's replacement for Uncle Ben. I think they played it this way because there is already multiple Spider-Man movies and wanted this one to be different plus it ties into the whole marvel cinematic universe better this way. That might make it worse in your eyes but I think they do understand the importance they just gave that role to Tony, he even dies and leaves Peter similarly.
@@amandap.1494 But that's the problem. You simply cannot replace Uncle Ben with Tony Stark. Because Stark never gives Peter a valuable lesson about responsibility. In fact, the MCU version of Spider-Man isn't even motivated by responsibility because he only wants to be a superhero for the thrills it brings him when in the comics he viewed his powers as a burden that forced him to fight for the helpless. "plus it ties into the whole marvel cinematic universe better this way." That's just another way of saying it's quantity over quality.
Edit: Yes, I'm aware that No Way Home did respond to the criticism by having Aunt May teach Peter the same lesson, but aside from the fact that it's too little too late, it doesn't take away the fact that he should have learned the meaning of responsibility before he became a superhero. What MCU did to Spidey is the equivalent of having Tony Stark become Iron Man years before he witnessed the chaos his creations caused
@@vetarlittorf1807 Ok I see your point. I'm just pretty sure that it was a conscience decision to do it this way. (not saying a good decision) Like this Peter was definitely more light and idk mass viewer friendly but I do think they try to keep what's important. Like the second movie was right after Tony died and it basically all centered around Peter not wanting the responsibility Tony left him (Which is why he gave the glasses E.D.I.T.H. away.) Like I'm sure they understand what makes Spider-man, I just feel they're changing/substituting main plot points to try to get the same results.
@@vetarlittorf1807 You also need to understand that we’ve seen Spider-Man’s origin story twice already with Andrew and Tobey. And in the MCU Tony Stark is the supposed father figure that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has. In this scene you can tell that Peter looks up to Tony, he believed in him and gave him the chance to be something “better”. But like all Spider-Men he’s in way over his head. He doesn’t fully understand the responsibility given to him, he shouldn’t be like Uncle Ben or Tony Stark, he needs to be himself, keep his feet on the ground and his head out of the clouds.
I love the sniff when he steps out of the suit. This is an instinctive display of aggression, flaring the nostrils to assert dominance. You see lions and wolves do it as well.

Peter proved Tony's point; yes, the Iron Man suit is an intimidating sight to behold, but he wasn't scared until he realized it was Tony inside of it.

I love the subtle shift to a gentler tone at 1:40 when Tony says, “Okay, we’ll sort that out” promising to get Peter other clothes so he can give the Spider-Man suit back. He’s mad at Peter (and really scared for his safety, too) but in that moment, he sounds almost reassuring. Regardless of how scared and angry he is, he’s still the caring parent (or parental figure, anyway) figuring out the logistics of providing for the kid he’s committed to mentor. Even while he’s in the middle of scolding Peter and confiscating things from him, he’s still willing to put that on hold to make sure Peter’s needs are met.
yeah because he’s mad at peter for messing up but he just got that all out in the open, did what he needed to do, and now they can be civil, it shows real maturity and development from tony, because we’ve seen him at his most petty, even with people he genuinely cares about

You can see the pain and hurt in Tony Stark's eyes when he tells Peter to give the suit back. If you have a kid or a sibling twice as younger than you, then you'll understand the pain. "Proof that Tony Stark has a heart".
This was always such a beautiful "father/son" moment to me. For many reasons. In my life, I can remember having been Peter looking at Tony as if he was a dictator. And I have been Tony, coming to the realization that I became what I never said I would become; my father. It really is a bittersweet feeling- to finally understand WHY your old man did things the way he did, and to realize how much you really just didn't get.
Time really is the greatest teacher.
"And if you die, I feel like that's on me". I can understand how Tony felt when Peter died in his arms in Infinity War :(((

That was an amazing bit of acting and direction.
the most dangerous iron man is operated by tony so I understand his fear
Because he thought the suit was empty and Tony wasn't there.
He’s not afraid of a suit because Tony wouldn’t hurt him. He is afraid of the human being, because Tony can hurt him emotionally.
"If you're nothing without the suit, you shouldn't have it." Full circle.
"Big Man in a suit of armor. Take that off who are you?"

And willingly gave up everything to save the universe
Yeah that's basically what tony was trying to teach peter, he needs to be someone without something so he can be something.

@@mahmoudanas6220 That was his whole point. Yes, he's been Spiderman this whole time but he's mostly just been a kid trying to impress his father figure not really knowing what he's doing yet. NWH was when he understood just how much responsibility he has being Spiderman. In NWH he "grew up" in a sense. The other 2 Spidermen already start out not having much, Tom's story was in reverse to theirs. He had to have everything so he could lose it all and become the "with great power comes great responsibility" Spiderman. One who's willing to do anything to protect people even at the cost of losing his entire personal life and having nobody. It's why even despite the fact that he literally fought an alien threatening the entire planet, Thanos wasn't really his villain. I like that Peter was completely intimidated the second Tony stepped out of that suit.
I like the first issue they were together Spidey told him off.
Even though he could literally break Tony in half lmao. (W/O suit)
Anthony Manzke That’s what I was thinking! Lol.
@@brettjohnson536 I know, right? I guess it's not about power but about authority. The guy commands respect.
@@antzke It's not about that, though. Especially because Peter looks up to Tony. He was just surprised, because he thought Tony wasn't in his suit.

“Aww, you care about me!”
That he's also screwed.
One of my favorite parts in this scene is when Tony says “No, this is where you zip it! The adult is talking!”.. You can genuinely feel the emotion Tony puts out. We watched Tony Stark grow from billionaire/playboy/philanthropist into a responsible hero and team leader. Up until this point he’s never had children, and you can tell here he serves as a father figure to Peter. He genuinely cares about him, and the fact that he’s upset at how Peter handled the situation (probably because years before he would’ve done the same) shows how much he’s grown! It’s truly a great scene and some really great acting from RDJ. Hell, when he said that I even sat up straight like I was being yelled at lol.
Well that part was improvised the the emotion is genuine.
Sooo true
And yet people still have the gall to say there's no talent behind these movies.

and that right there makes everything in the first rescue much more impactful.
Peter was under the impression that because Tony was on vacation, there wasn't anything being done and he wasn't listening. Looking back at it, I noticed how Tony mentioned the most niche details of Peter's day-to-day duties, like the churro lady.
"Great things are about to happen, Mr Parker, and you..."
*Ho-o-o-onk*
"What was that?"
"Uh, I'm at band practice."
"That's odd. Happy told me that you quit band 6 weeks ago. What's up?"
"Uh... I gotta go. End call!"
The exact week. Such a big step up from a guy who once offered his love interest the one food she's allergic to.
Not only that him saying he called the FBI and him saving the ferry ment he was ready to step in need be to get the weapons
The fact that everything that Tony says to him from "I listened" and "I believed in you" to "I don't need your death on my conscience" was actually a genuine explanation like mature people discuss with each other, and involved constructive criticism like "If you're nothing without it you should not have it", really shows how good of a father figure he is. He could have told him to shut up and just give him the suit directly, but instead he didn't just assert his authority over him without letting him know he genuinely messed up.
That makes what happened in infinity war hit harder since tony was forced to watch Peter get dusted

Wrong peter 😂
My brother and myself fell out 6 years ago and the one thing he said to me was " I never want to turn out like you!" And I used Tony Stark's immortal line and said " I never wanted you to either. I have only wanted you to be better!" It was then I realised that this is what big brothers are there for. To go through all the shit first so they can look after the little brother. They'll never appreciate you for it. But one day they'll learn you were just protecting them.
I really admire the character development of Tony! From an arrogant spoiled little rich-boy, to a responsible father figure.
"I wanted to be like you"
"And I wanted you to be better"
"Like captain America?"
"GIVE ME THE SUIT BACK"
Ouch
💀
Just give me the suit back!🤣
I can just imagine Tony laughing his ass off after Peter saying Captain America.
The “ I wanted to be like you” line hits different since that the little boy he saved in Iron Man 2 was actually Peter
This scene is the best because Tony Stark sees alot of himself in Peter Parker. He knows Peter has potential and he needs to find himself.
Well said!
Nigga you're fucking everywhere
How are you everywhere!???
Sid cuz he’s Stan Lee
Tanay Soni cuz he’s Stan Lee
This scene is just so extremely well written and acted.
damn I really miss when the MCU was actually trying to make good stories, damn what good times
Look at how far he's come. Having to rely on Stark technology to survive and do what he needed to do, and now he's alone. Living alone, with his own technology and his own suit. Can't wait to see where this goes.
Hopefully a happy ending someday

After endgame you could tell Tony saw Peter Parker photo and wanted to try to bring him back
He wasn't a dad, he was a POS here
At some way, Petter does look at Tonny akin to a father figure.
Edit:
Or at least a beloved mentor.
@@commissarf1196 Yeah, Peter didn't have a father figure since Uncle Ben died and even tho Ben for sure influenced who Peter is without the mask, Tony was the one who taught him HOW to wear the mask.

I'm just obsessed with this scene, there dad-kid relationship, the fact that it's Tony that intimidates him, not Iron Man and everything's. I just love it!
Many of the Raimi fanboys look back at this scene and make fun of this Spider-Man for saying "I just wanted to be like you" to tony, basically iron man jr. Thing is this is exactly how Peter was in the first few spiderman comics, and he looked up to people such as the Fantastic Four and even tried to join them for a very short period of time, until he eventually decides to become his own hero and prove everyone wrong. This is exactly what happens in this movie, where Peter wanted to join the Avengers, realized he couldn't, learned a few lessons and decided to be an independent hero.
👏👏👏👏👏
Right? What the complainers don't seem to get is that MCU writers knew for sure they could spread out Peter's character development. Raimi had to do the origin story, then establish the character audiences expected, and hope for a sequel.
Good point on Spidey wanting to join F4. I vaguely remember I wanted to point that out in an argument once, but can't remember why anymore. I think it was for the reason you just said.
"If you're nothing without this suit, then you shouldn't have it." This is such a great line
@Sexy Doraemon we're just gonna casually ignore Spidey lifting a building and defeating Vulture without the suit aren't we?
@Sexy Doraemon that he made himself, with his own web formula. Tobey's Peter got everything handed to him, and you accuse Tom's Peter of it. Ironic.
@Sexy Doraemon Tobey's webs don't even work if he's sick
@Roshan Rijo I stand corrected but you get what I mean
@@Nadie47 really then let's talk about Andrews spiderman. That man built everything from the ground up and went through it his spiderman went through more than this one. I hear a lot of people unfairly criticize this movie for not being, “as relatable” as the other Spider-Man movies. But if you ask me, looking up to somebody, wanting to impress them. And trying so hard to do so, only to embarrass yourself and feel the heavy weight of guilt for making a fool out of yourself infront of someone you see as an Idol. Is one of the most relatable things in the world.
That’s incredibly true!
But that's not spiderman.
they said that because they probably are ready an adult, when this movie came out I was still in Highschool and I can say this movie was pretty relatable to my high school life and teenagers life. The fact at the time you will do anything to impress someone either your family, your friends, your girlfriend or anyone that you cared, you will try to be a nice guy and the best for everyone you loved and care.
