  • Are you stuck at home because of the quarantine? Trying to buy a desk in stores or online is next to impossible because stores and online stores do not have any in stock. Yes there is a desk shortage just like the toilet paper shortage. So if you have old doors lying around or want to buy door slabs then you can make your own desk! In this video I will show you how to make a desk with old doors.

    If you're looking for metal wall angle for mounting the desk to the wall you will not find the ones in the video at the big box stores. You will find something similar that will work but smaller in size. The ones the stores will have are 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 3" and will work fine. I have also found something on amazon and I will leave the link below

    Very cool. I'm looking into making a desk from a solid door as it's the cheapest way to get wood. I've found 3 solid doors on facebook marketplace for $70 and purchased a set of metal legs for $50.

    I like the idea of using the metal wall cleats. I'm not familiar with these. (Non-builder here). I've searched Amazon, HD, and Lowe's sites. Is this that would be found in store (not on their website) or do I need to go to a building supply company?

      the ones shown in the video you might not be able to get in the store, however the do have some that are a bit smaller and that will work as well. The ones they sell at Menards or home depot will be 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 and 3ft long. I did find something on amazon. Here is the link. amzn.to/3kMRdR9
      with either of these choices you will have to drill your own holes and painting is optional. I hope this helps. Or you can make your own out of wood. Use two 1"x3" and screw them together to form and L-shape. Hope this helps.

    Great video, the angles are attached to the wall and to the wood?

    Hey Joe. Looking at doing something with solid core door slabs but have been curious if I should brace them in the middle to prevent potential sagging. You said the door don't typically, right?

    • @Doityourselfwithjoe
      @Doityourselfwithjoe  3 года назад

      A solid core door shouldn't however it cant hurt. You don't have to anchor the door in the middle just ad something on the wall.

    You mention using PVC for legs. How would you attach those?

    • @Doityourselfwithjoe
      @Doityourselfwithjoe  3 года назад

      you can cut a block of woods with a hole saw close to the inside diameter of the pvc. I would use plywood and double layer it and mount them to the bottom of the desk. then drill a couple of holes in the pvc to screw it to the wood blocks. you can also use pvc caps. I used pvc for legs in my video how to make a coffee table. This is the link to that video. ruclips.net/video/0Besl6MepJ0/видео.html hope this helps

    Just curious, do you have SKUs or product links for the wall cleats? Not finding them online with a cursory search.

    • @Doityourselfwithjoe
      @Doityourselfwithjoe  2 года назад

      No I don't. These are cut out of 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 x 8' wall angle. They don't need to be that large. I just used them because i had them. You can use
      1-1/2 x1-1/2. Here is the link to that amzn.to/3pvfAW4

    Easiest way to get a nice cheap desk. Is just buy a piece of 8 foot long birch ply or something smooth and nice. They cost like 45-55 bucks. Have it cut width wise as wide as you like while there.
    If you cant find a door cheap enough.

      I agree. Some doors aren't cheap. I was just pointing out that you don't have to throw old doors away and they can be repurposed.
