Definitely guilty of that "I'm new to freelancing" mindset ahah. Very well organized and helpful, thank you! Would love to hear about how you spend the hours not spent on client work in the next video--or even to pick your brain some day as you seem to be in the Vancouver area. Cheers!
Hey Joon! Thanks for watching! The majority of my time outside of billable hours goes towards correspondence and email, lead nurturing, administration, content creation, and management of my own social media platforms. I'd say I spend about 30% of my time on these tasks. Eats up quite a bit, even when optimized. Cheers fellow Vancouverite!
Caley, Before starting a Social Media Marketing Agency / Digital Marketing Agency / Consulting Agency, what type of company do you recommend setting-up - LLC, C-Corp, S-Corp, Ltd., sole-proprietorship with DBA, partnership, other? Why do you recommend that type of company or corporation?
Hi Howie, I'm so sorry for the late reply! How I'd recommend you set it up will depend on your projected revenue. But no matter what, always get liability insurance and use solid contracts for every client!
Still watching the video but so far, it seems like it was shot all in one take! Holy shit you're good at speaking on camera; whenever I look into a camera and try to start speaking, my mind goes blank. Are you using a teleprompter or are you just really eloquent?
Haha it was! Looking back, I'm not sure why I did it that way now... I'm as surprised as you are, because three years later, I'm not sure if I still have this capability haha. No teleprompter! Just passionate and knowledgable about what I'm speaking about. Thanks for watching!
Hi! I was wondering what you thought about 'payment by subscription' ?-Which is asking a client to pay 50% before and 50% after work is completed under an agreed-upon amount of time. (for example if your client agrees to to pay $2000 for 4 articles in a 2 month span, they would pay 50% before you write for them and 50% afterwards) Could this be an ideal way of payment if you had a returning client? I was also wondering if you had any tips on creating a 'rates and policies' page for a freelance writer/blogger website. Sorry for the 20 questions-haha! Another question I have is,
Hey Kendall! Great question! I never start work on a project or retainer without a 50% deposit. I believe that this is absolutely crucial in order to protect yourself, especially with new clients. Once the relationship is well established, sometimes I switch to billing at project/term end, but only if they have a great payment history with us. Regarding the rates and policies page, this is going to change from person to person. I generally leave policies off my website though and introduce them in my proposals. Providing a general starting point or range for rates on your website though is a great idea so that only people/companies who are qualified to actually hire you take up your time beyond that first step. Cheers!
Quick question, how do I compare pricing to agencies when most don't have it on their site? Also I have 2 years of experience in ecommerce but not so much in marketing (professionally). I was thinking of starting off for free since I have my job(for now), and use them as testimonials. But then if I'm lower in rate how many clients is too many? I just feel having no direct long term experience it'd be difficult to charge more than 1k. I'm in Nyc so most pricing is more expensive. I have a grasp on what I'm doing but no proof. Maybe realistically I should be at 500-700 starting out?
Hey hey! Thanks for stopping by my channel! It takes research, a lot of research. I've done this and have a new program coming out about pricing and it comes with a guide that has all of the market ranges. I do believe in taking 2 clients for free. For a limited time, or a set project. Get them results. Make case studies. Get testimonials. And then price yourself appropriately (not at the bottom of the market range). Get your proof first! Then don't price too low. What service/s specifically will you be offering?
I'm so lost... I have a meeting with my 'first' official paid client ( i have about 2+ years of unpaid/ one off design work) before watching this video, I'd planned to charge £150/ month... Which i now realize is massively undervaluing myself? I don't know exactly how many hours I'd put in but the package included; instagram, facebook, email marketing, ad management, content creation, rebranding design and everything in-between. Say if i were to work for 20 hours a week, this would have amounted to £1.70/ hour!? I feel weird just coming up with a number or placing myself in the range 🙈
Hey hey! So sorry for the late reply! Yes you were totally undervaluing yourself! Try your best to use some of the strategies I've outlined in my video and then OWN IT. You and your work are worth it! It takes practise to ask for what you're worth, but it gets easier with time, I promise!
I haven’t sat down and figured these yet BUT this sounds like the info I’ve been needing
This was really insightful. Then lastly I just wanted to say YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.
Glad you found it helpful! Are you a freelancer?
@@CaleyDimmockRUclips yes I am a freelancer
Its actually so difficult to figure out what to charge when all client requests are different! Thank you so much for this!!

I’m trying to figure out to give rates as a freelance model 😭I struggle
It's a tough thing to figure out! Have you made any progress on this? Sorry for the delayed reply!
Caley Dimmock no not yet and because of covid there hasn’t really been any opportunities
@@keerabrar4314 They'll come back! What can you do in the meantime to make progress? What are the possibilities? Try to do a little brainstorm :)
