I think this episode was in a time when they were bridging to their higher quality repartee, whereas I find some of the earlier episodes painful to watch. Joel slowly comes into his own as time goes on.

I think they did a fantastic job too considering Josh and them probably only had a week to work on these episodes as opposed to the longer production time and bigger budget they had in later episodes. Also most of the KTMA stuff was improved and not scripted, sometimes they were viewing the movie for the first time.
This movie, Looks like an L-1011 was used in the movie not Boeing 2707 I can tell; Cabin interior Aircraft wing/flap Rolls-Royce RB.211 I kind of paying attention in detail.
Woah! Just when you thought the Sci-Fi episodes were low budget, lol. I actually think Tom Servo looks really cool. You have to think that this is a show that started very small, virtually unknown. Now it’s got such a huge and loyal fan base. A fan base that can raise MILLIONS for the show TWICE on Kickstarter. Crazy!
when the original was shown on TV in Britain, the sensitive souls at the censors decided we Limeys couldn't bear seeing the harrowing crash scene - and edited it out! So just after the decision to divert they were all flying along nicely wondering if it was the right decision, and then suddenly lots of them were dead on the ground! All these years I was thinking that maybe a crash scene had been too expensive to film - but no it was censored in Britain.
And that is the reason I always watch the non-MST3K version first. Sometimes even the version MST3K is butchered. Still looking for the original version of this one, though.
The stuff about releasing a deadly virus sure hits differently now, doesn't it? This is actually an entertaining movie. A little corny, absolutely, but it's got good pacing and enough quality acting to keep you entertained without a lot of snappy one-liners.
KTAVERILL Keep in mind that unless the film is public domain and they own the print, they still have to pay to license it so that they can rip on it! Sad but true... The licensing situation is WAY worse for clip show films like "It Came From Hollywood." It's a nightmare to try and release something like that today because all these different companies want their piece of it even though they may be using clips from films the various media conglomerates don't know they own or in some cases aren't aware aren't covered by copyright protection anymore.
Too bad these people who spend their time renewing copyright licenses don't realize that without MST3k riffing obscure movies, they'd never be seen at all!

What always cracks me up (apart from the riffing) is the fact, that the director of this, David Lowell Rich, two years later directed Airport '79. That would have been a good material for the show.
They pretty much did this already in ANOTHER major Hollywood movie that was released 3 years after this TV movie. Go back and watch the movie Airplane... It pretty much riffs on every major plot point from this film. They even brought back Peter Graves as the captain that time! Everybody recognizes Graves from Airplane but oh boy did ALMOST every plot point in this film get reused somehow in Airplane! Sick passengers, viral contagent (the food in Airplane), pilot with troubled past, starcrossed romance, a doctor who determined it was the food that caused the illness and said they had to land ASAP! (Leslie Nielsen). Of course, they added a sick kid to tweak the "cute factor" and have something they could abuse in lieu of a puppy! If remember correctly, the kid actress they used was the same girl who played Captain Steubing's (sp) daughter on "Love Boat!"

While I _can_ get that - the movie needs to be excellent, live theater accomplishes this for me more effectively, I generally don't. I have rolling commentary in my head about its inconsistencies. But Hollywood films are pretty much _ALL_ cardboard cut-outs of each other. I've always preferred doing things than to watching them. I only come to MST3K because they do what they do very well.

I have an ordered playlist on my channel for this purpose. I maintain it for when episodes get removed/reuploaded, and try to put the actual title/info in notes for uploads with vague titles (like MST0316 for instance).
I was confused and thought this movie was the inspiration for Airplane but it's not... There was a movie named Zero Hour (1957) released by Paramount that starred Dana Andrews and Linda Darnell. I haven't seen Zero Hour but supposedly they DID copy the script from the film and redid it as straight up comedy = Airplane. I'm thinking SST Death Flight was ALSO a remake of Zero Hour but since it was made 20 years later they figured people would have forgotten the older Zero Hour movie! This happens so many times with movies but the studios are usually cagier (smarter) about what they choose to remake. You don't remake obvious classics (Wizard of Oz, Casablanca) unless you want to lose money!!!
