King in the Wilderness chronicles the final chapters of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, revealing a conflicted leader who faced an onslaught of criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. While the Black Power movement saw his nonviolence as weakness, and President Lyndon B. Johnson saw his anti-Vietnam War speeches as irresponsible, Dr. King’s unyielding belief in peaceful protest became a testing point for a nation on the brink of chaos.
Dr. King’s leadership during the bus boycotts, the sit-ins and the historic Selma to Montgomery marches is now legendary, but much of what happened afterward - during the last three years of his life - is rarely discussed. It’s a time when Dr. King said his dream “turned into a nightmare.” From the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 to his assassination in 1968, King remained unshakably committed to nonviolence in the face of an increasingly unstable country.
The documentary debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is directed by Peter Kunhardt (HBO’s Emmy-winning Jim: The James Foley Story). Drawing on conversations with those who knew Dr. King well, including many fellow members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), King in the Wilderness reveals stirring new perspectives on Dr. King’s character, his radical doctrine of nonviolence and his internal philosophical struggles prior to his assassination in 1968. The documentary also features archival footage, behind-the-scenes video of Dr. King’s private moments, intimate archival photographs and phone conversations recorded by President Johnson, who was both ally and adversary in King’s fight for civil rights.

I remember when he was assassinated. I was too young to understand exactly what had happened, but I felt the sadness and turmoil in my soul. I was 5, but the memories are so strong. He was a breath of fresh air. I pray we (not just the 13%, but all of us) get a voice of reason to lead us who is even half as amazing as the incredible Martin Luther King! Achieving black freedom has to be approached from many angles and many tactics have to be employed. Infighting and condescension because we disagree with each other’s tactics is what is problematic.
Olaoluwa Bode-Omoleye You missed the point completely. The combination between that statement and the story told by Harry Belafonte speaks to a deeper mentality regarding race, intimacy and desire that I think is problematic. A large part of why many black people cannot view themselves as autonomous and empowered is because of an fixation with white goodness, desirability and humanity. It is not so much about approach or tactic. It is about one’s mentality. It is an observation I noticed and something that I noticed in my experiences in day to day life as well. It needs to be unpacked more.
I see MLK as God's special gift to humanity and to black people in particular. A magnificent human being. Following the works of this great soul has given a new meaning and understanding to my life.

When Dr. King ducked in total fear at around 34:25 my heart sank! He had to be in fear all the time with all of the threats, but seeing him in fear was just heartbreaking. His courage, inspite of it all is so moving. "Can't turn back now."

To see and hear Daddy King wail and mourn his son is a loss few of us have felt or could bear. Truly it expressed the deep grief of a nation seemingly robbed of one of its greatest progenies. It brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat to witness, even decades later. That loss is deep, and yet we are the privileged few to carry on his legacy in how fully we choose to live our lives, dedicated to the plunging forward of justice and speaking for those who are voiceless.
I met, "Daddy King" one on one at the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia for about two (2) minutes. The year was 1976 and I was about 15 years old. MLK Senior listened keenly and was attentive/kind. He called me, "young fella.". Very nice man.... One love.

Unfortunately, it wasn't the last major trauma in his life. King, Sr. had to bury his wife and his son A. D. also.
He still two daughters though. His actually daughter and Coretta. They all suffered.

It was the moment that the shred of thin hope, that it was just a bad joke, disappeared, Disbelief became belief, the abstract became reality. "Look at how they massacred my boy". Grown men are always and forever the babies of their mothers and fathers. That was his baby in there... There are no words for that pain.
The pressure Dr. King felt must have been tremendous. We lost a good man, his spirit will live on forever. He became a threat when he came into war & poverty issues. Such a tragedy to the entire world. We have no great leaders for us they have all been slain. 😔

I'm in awe. Dr. King did all of this to help millions while he himself was deteriorating because of all the stress and anxiety he had caused by all of the hate thrown his way. When they did his autopsy, his body was nearly double the age he actually was. Truly horrible and inspiring.

I agree with the old man who said that Dr. King was more radical than most people knew when he was alive. More radical than most people who are thought to be radical, or think themselves to be radical. For to be radical is to go to the roots of things, the foundations. And it is change on that level that he sought, that he was committed to.
That clip of Martin Luther King Sr. at 1:39:35...I had never seen that before. Just brought me to tears. That's my ultimate nightmare. I have one child, my only son. The thought of ever having to bury him instead of him bury me, I can't even comprehend what that grief must've felt like.

I have watched so many documentaries of martin luther king and this the first film I saw when his father broke down and cry and I felt that pain. That really hurt to his father like that. Rip dr king ur legacy will always continue.
I read that, his autopsy report revealed, he had a heart of a 60 year old when he was only 39 years, due to stress.
It's no wonder! Constant death threats from evil demons and also the evil government agents! Then him just shouldering all the social issues on the people....and all types of other stresses we don't know about. It's crazy that he was able to make it even as long as he did!

His sermons and calls for peaceful settlement of conflicts, good and light resonate in the hearts of people, regardless of their race and to this day. The words of his last moving speech, titled "I have seen the promised Land," are especially prophetic in light of the fact that he was killed the next day. Killed, but not forgotten, because his incredible courage, decency and sense of justice remained forever in the hearts of future generations. A great movie about a Great Man. Thanks!

True story: Years ago, I was teaching a 5th grade class, and on this particular day, we learned the word, "martyr." I told them, that in my opinion, Martin Luther King was a perfect example of a martyr, because it was evident from his final speech that he knew he had very limited time. I asked them to take out their desk dictionaries and look up the word. Lo and behold, and unbeknownst to me, the entry immediately preceding 'martyr' was..."Martin Luther King, Jr. Day." Chew on that for a moment - of the tens of thousands words in the book, MLK followed his very definition, "martyr." There's something bigger at play, folks!

This is truly a Great documentary and homage to the legacy of Dr. King. I'm not sold on the claim that Lyndon B. Johnson was as "down" as he was made out to be when Dr. King was taken from us though. It had been proven that the federal government assassinated him once he began using his influence to fight against the Vietnam War, and establishing a national campaign to combat poverty. The fight against the war was perhaps the greatest determining factor when one considers the greed involved within the military industrial complex. Long Live Dr. King's legacy and message, and hopefully, educational programs such as this can inspire a desire to protest any injustices that stir the spirit of God's children.

I can't imagine one person can be pulled in so many directions like Dr. King Jr. was . If he wasn't assassinated he would have died early over health. He was breaking down health wise and he was only 39. HIs importance to so many people forgot that he was one man who had a family. He was literally in a no win situation
