I always remembered this conversation between these two. I like to think that in-universe, Donna always remembered it as well, and that it was one of the things that helped her finally step out from Josh's shadow.
In retrospect, this is probably the catalyst to Donna leaving in season six (and the catalyst for Josh not giving her more to do (beyond what CJ laid out), given how the trip ends up going)
I am not a fan of this discussion. I think cj did a good job to donna finally thinking about herself and stop focused her entire life on josh. But she missread the situation. Josh didn't kept donna because she is valuable or because he will never find someone else with same skills as donna omg but he was affraid to lose her. It is obvious that Josh loved her since years now. But it is lazy writing because few weeks after when cj knew about the car accident in gaza the first person she is running to was josh. So clearly she knew that josh didn't keep donna because he will never find anyone else as competent as her.
CJ's '" You would have grown out of this job three years ago" was BS. Donna came nowhere near graduating from college and lucked into her job in the first place. And she wasnt the only one who never moved up. None of the assistants ever got promoted.Kathy, Ginger and Nacy were just as skilled or more than Donna and they werent promoted. In fact the only people that ever were promoted were CJ, and Ainlsey who was only there six months and only because they were trying to look bipartisan that week due to Sam screwing something else up. And of course Will but that was only due to Toby gettting fired and Bingo Bob losing the primary.
We don't know if others secretary or assistant never been promoted. The show never talked about it because they aren't the main character. And donna had skills that others secretary didn't have. It is not because they aren't promoted that they did bad job. And i think 3 years ago it would have been 3 years after bartlett won the presidency so it was possible that donna being promoted. But this discussion was on purpose for donna left josh and thinking about her career and let josh away from her
Well Charlie also got promoted in a way i think since he went from been the president's body man to been CJ's assistant which gave him more of a chance to influence things.
@@eagles77AA Plus since Donna was the assistant to the Deputy Chief Of Staff there was a few places higher she could be promoted to and maybe one of the reasons she decided to leave is because she knew she reached a limit working for Josh.

Bottle episodes just have an undeniable success rate

CJ was career driven with the occasional lapse for physical gratification. Donna did a great job but was always looking for something else.

I agree.

@aph1976 true. I think she should've left him on s4 on sorkin era.
The two of them should have gotten together....
