      Everyone loves to h8 on Metallica lol, it never fails lol. I really dig this track, it's very promising to see all of my favorite old school bands returning to their roots.
      St. Anger, Death Magnetic/Beyond Magnetic, and Hardwired get h8ed on a lot but I love all 3 of those albums and I appreciate them for what they are and NOT what they "should've" been.

    I feel like this album might be their last, and this song is a tribute to their legacy. Along with the Kill Em All high intensity power chord frenzy early thrash style metal, there's the breakdown riff after the solo which sounds very similar to Hit the Lights, their first song on their debut album, and ever since the lights have not gone out. Lux Aeterna is latin for Eternal Light. This might just be their Lazarus as it was to David Bowie, but even if Metallica die, the light will still shine bright forever more.
    Also might play into the Album name and art. Like what happened 72 seasons ago? Or perhaps it may be about the first 72 seasons. 4 seasons in a year, 72 seasons in 18 years, from their debut in 1983 to 2001, the year Newsted left the band. Might this album be an homage to their early years before Trujillo? 18 years ago was 2004, the band got back together after being worn down and on the verge of disbanding, and ever since have kept on making new music. What does the blinding yellow light shining down on the old broken crib that looks like a monster had broken free from its bars mean? Might it just be about the birth of metal, birth of Metallica, or perhaps a passing of the torch, the light that now shines on the new faces of metal.
    Ok tbh I've spent too much time looking into this, you guys do more research if you want I wanna listen to this absolute banger again.

    When I first heard this tune the other night I was kinda torn, as far as my initial impression. Now a couple days have gone by and I have found myself repeatedly going back to listen to it, over and over. The chorus where James screams the song title is everything in this track. That and the kick drums. But just the way James climbs the ladder vocally to belt out the chorus is such an amazing hook.
    This almost feels like a sorta power metal almost-but-not-quite Dokken-type vibe meets British new wave meets sped-up Load riffage meets a more polished version of Hit the Lights. It's gonna be a go-to live song (the lyrics kinda reflect that) and the song's energy and the boys' own energy are undeniable. I can't explain it, but all I know is my ear loves it.
    I'm very happy Metallica is back with new tunes and I'm also very happy they kept the album under wraps so now it's arriving soon - to MY mind - rather than them announcing it 2 years out and then us playing the waiting game.
    These old dogs can still hunt. 🤘🤘

    Yeah, solid track. Seems to be the 'fast, quick banger' like Hardwired was and that's great. Not my favourite either but I like the last 2 albums a lot (I even like Load) and the fact that they're still pumping out good sounding music - new formula or not - is awesome, especially with them sounding so tight and what not live. I read a comment somewhere that they must be in the studio because everything they've been playing live lately was super tight and that was absolutely correct it seems. Keen for the album!! I'm honestly just tired of having to say "well I don't love it, but it's good". When before there was no question the reaction would be "that was so godamn badass". That's the difference. It isn't hate. Everyone keeps calling us haters,...it's not that. It's just growing tiresome of having to sort of just get a consolation prize that isn't the main prize, but hey,...it's good at least,...thanks for showing up. It's also not being elitist, it really is just an honest emotion,...it doesn't do anything to me anymore. And I'm saddened by it. Because it's been over 2 decades of trying to be moved by their material, and it has yet to happen again. The last time I was genuinely excited and moved by their material was garage inc. It was really amazing to hear what they did with those covers, especially the merciful fate medley. Oh well I suppose.

    • @TwoToeTags
      @TwoToeTags  Год назад

      Usually in cases like this it's more an issue with the listener and not the band. Our music tastes change and evolve over the years and we tend to hold on to nostalgic memories of bands we grew up with. Objectively this sounds just as good as any previous Metallica but subjectively since your taste has evolved and your frame of mind musically is in a different place, they will never be able to make you feel like you did 20+ years ago.
      When it comes to bands like Metallica there is nothing they can do that will please everyone. They're clearly going for an old school vibe here which people all say they want yet still complain when they get it.

    • @morsteen
      @morsteen Год назад

      @@TwoToeTags yeah that's true to an extent. Totally agree. I hear the old school in it. Ok, there is one cool thing, I like that James is embracing a little of the high notes like he is. I like that. But it's not that we are getting old school, and still complaining about it. It's that even with such an attempt, it doesn't have that same oomph. I don't think objectively this rivals much of their classic work at all. Also it isn't objectively bad either. And I have absolutely no professional leg to stand on to assert my superiority in any way, because I am just a normal rhythm guitarist that struggles to play stuff other people can literally play while not even looking at their fretboard. It's not dogging on them in any way, it's just relaying the feeling I do or don't get when hearing it.
      It's sort of like the "eye-test" when it comes to the leflop vs. Jordan debate. Because of the longevity of his career, leflop is going to hold some records over others,...but for most people, he doesn't pass the "eye-test". You just don't get that same feeling when you watch.
      There have been several bands that have passed that test for me over the years with their new material. So it doesn't simply boil down to evolution of tastes or nostalgia. A perfect example was testament's album the gathering. I thought their 80s stuff was the pinnacle. A new order is a fricking masterpiece, and I absolutely loved that sound. Now if I was just being truly close-minded and staying in the previous mindset, I would not have been absolutely blown the fuck away by the gathering. It didn't sound exactly like their 80s stuff both in composition or recording quality. But, Alex's solos were still fricking blistering and melodic, chucks vocals were sooo brutal and great. The drumming was top notch, and Eric's guitars were phenomenal. Subjectively, it wasn't the testament we knew from the 80s. Objectively, it was expertly crafted and executed. I Remember reading an Interview with them at the time (1999 I believe), and they were quoted as saying "this is the album people wish metallica would come out with". And that was absolutely correct. If that had the old school metallica logo on it, and everything was the same (only with James' vocals), it would have been held up as a rival to any metallica masterpiece album.
      It's not that they can't please everyone, duh. No band can. It's that for many of us, the material just does not evoke that HOLY SHIT, ARE YOU HEARING THIS!? feeling.

    Reminds me of some old school skate punk/thrash from the 80's. The "lux aeterna" hook seems a bit over produced vocaly. Would sound better with James just growling it out raw. Overall it brings me back to their old B sides they used to put out like Bread Fan. I like it it's just missing a bit more edginess to it.

    My take is Megadeth's latest threw down the gauntlet and caused Metallica to show us they still got it. But Metallica has tended to leak the thrashiest song before an album and then we get a bunch of mid-tempo songs when we actually get the release.

      Absolutely agree, people love to h8 on Metallica tho and it gets annoying. It's always funny to see people claim Metallica and Megadeth aren't Thrash, if that's the case, then why do soo many Modern Thrash bands try to emulate both bands? I'm a huge Thrash Metal Head, you can hear The Big 4's influence on Thrash and other genres to this day.

    I do like the song, but I still find myself longing for the edgy Metallica that always kept pushing the genre to the next level. I need to check my expectations though, because I feel like they stopped being that band over 25 years ago. I feel like they've kind of settled into this place where their music rides somewhere in the middle of the genre; not being any better or worse than any other really good band. It is awesome to see them still cranking out hard and fast riffs, and for James to still sound so strong at their age.

      It's great to hear someone showing some love for "Halo On Fire", it's my 2nd favorite song from Hardwired and everything about it feels meaningful. I think it's James's best vocal performance on the album imo, it seems to be about his alcoholism, and Kirk's solos are very soulful. Amazing song overall!

    Everyone loves to h8 on Metallica lol (yes, I'm calling out the h8ers in the comments), it never fails lol.
    I think that's the problem with the metal elitist mindset, especially when it comes to these old school legendary bands who just about everyone knows and loves.

    I've been done being hyped for a new Metallica album since the Black album. It's like they stopped trying all they do now is try to feed the mainstream rock and pop frenzy. James runs the same 4 chords he's known for & Kirk has been playing the same solo over & over again since Kill Em All. All they do is give you the bare minimum and what's worse is people keep feeding their egos by telling them how great all their stuff sounds & those of us waiting for Master of Puppets 2 suffer needlessly. And anyone calling this Thrash needs to have their head examined.

    I want to give Metallica the benefit of the doubt, but they have continually disappointed me. This single is absolutely horrid. I hate to be that guy, but the only improvement is James' vocals. The guitar writing is palatable for clear channel radio and that is it. Lars finally wrote a drum part he can play live with out blowing it. (Which he does almost every single show) People are comparing this to Kill 'Em All and I just don't hear it. This is no Ride the Lightning. I do not hear the roots of the band unless you are considering the roots to start with Load and Re-Load. I hope this is the weakest single on the record because I absolutely hate this song. It is lifeless and not at all creative. Kirk Hammett plays a great solo and that's basically it.
    I would love for Metallica to make a valiant return to form, but they simply won't. Kreator did it, Megedeth did it, Death Angel did it, Slayer sorta did it along with a few others. This song does not reflect the Metallica people are claiming this to be. I will look forward to the rest of the record because if this is the worst song on the record it will give me hope. Again, I hate to be that guy but this song is basic and lazy.

      @@TwoToeTags or just sound like Metallica again. This version is neutered. I am more sad they are not playing to their full potential. They are FAR better musicians than the opening riff. Lars plays nearly zero fills and entirely single stroke rolls across the entire song. The bass part has zero exposure. The only thing good, like I said, are James' vocals and the short lived solo. I want more from these guys. Either they got lazy, or the record company has them on a creative leash. Meshuggah doesn't even compare here. They have their place and Metallica has theirs.
