I've watched it a dozen times, still finding meself aplauding, and having a great smile on me face, a great performance ,a great guitar,,, just amazing
so do i. im german, but one day i came to all kind of americana. and this two voices blend soooo perfectly together. i have many albums of gillian. i love her little nasal voice. verrrryyyy beautiful. can hear it again and again.
BBC4 St. Luke’s Full Concert August 4, 2004 London:Setlist:00:30 - I Want To Sing That Rock And Roll 03:47 - Make Me Down A Pallet On Your Floor 07:11 - Elvis Presley Blues 12:17 - Look At Miss Ohio 16:24 - Red Clay Halo 20:10 - My First Lover 23:58 - One Little Song 27:23 - Revelator 35:12 - By The Mark 38:51 - The Way It Will Be 45:04 - Caleb Meyer 48:40 - I’ll Fly Away 52:39 - The Weight (with Old Crow Medicine Show)
I heard this live on the night and finished up getting the whole family round to listen to it. Astonishing harmonies and guitar work. I have gone back to it again and again over the years as it is TV at its best and never disappoints. (Well Done BBC) Time (The Revelator) has not been bettered since by anyone and I defy anyone who hears it not to stop listen and really appreciate two fabulous musicians absolutely at the top of their game.... a desert island disc for sure.
The first time i heard this about 5 years ago I was blown away, 5 years later I'm still moved to tears by the pure raw beauty of these two, words cannot describe how i feel when I listen to this. What I wouldn't give to see these two live in a small venue somewhere. Xx
i only can agree to what all listeners before me wrote. These two musicians arent just the normal bread and butter no way !!! they are top off the bill musicians heavenly voiced but stay so normal. One thing will surely happen you will be feeling a magical feeling coming over you like you'll be under a spell and it never let you go !!! in a very very good way !!
I wonder if they understand how good their music is, how well it works. Being on the inside of it, engaged in the delicate process of writing or performing, they can't experience it the way we do. Listening to one of their own recordings, even, they probably can't just hear it and feel what it does. They have reason to envy us.
Actually Benjamin, While I agree on how Phenomenally good Rawlings is, I was talking to one of the Felice Brothers, back around the time of a tour of OCMS, The Felice Brothers and the David Rawlings Machine and he said, " He's the most talented guy in the room, any room, but he don't know it, He is humble and he gets nervous before he goes out there. " and I met his father at the Newport Folk Festival, without Giullian and David on the bill and while I didn't know it was his father, I happened to sing David's praises, and he said, " He's my son. I didn't know David was a world class musician until someone told me."
Actually Ben I was paraphrasing my discussion with Mr Rawlings Sr... he actually said this interesting revelation " Gillian's is my Daughter inlaw, David , That's My son." yep, they keep it quiet, I don't know why, but they are married.
IMO this is their best live performance I've been able to find on the internet. The only rival concert material is the live time revelator album, two songs of which are on RUclips. I return to this one above all other, these renditions are pretty much perfect.
Love these two. What a great concert. The only faith here is their undeniable talent and voices. Gillian and David are true troubadours of the great western sound.
Wonderful concert. Reaches to the musical and, at times, spiritual core of all that is good, special, and true in American traditional and blue grass music. Great musicians and composers deserving of all good things that have and will come their way. One day I hope to see Dave and Gillian honored for lifetime achievement at the Kennedy Center.
I saw them during this era at App State University in Boone, NC,,, they played a similar set. This video brought me back to that experience and it by far was the best music venue I've ever experienced.
Great work from the BBC. The fact that the state-owned BBC, and here in Oz the ABC, seem to be so much of the best work in television is an indictment on market theory.
Elvis Presley would have loved Gillian and Dave. He would have jumped on the stage with his guitar and added his beautiful voice to their crisp, spot-on harmonies. These two are as good as the Beatles. Their songs, musicianship, and performances are brilliant.
As good as the Beatles? come on man, they're incredible musicians but don't come within 2 miles of the consistency, creativity and flexibility of the Beatles songwriting. And this is from a massive Gillian / David fan and someone that doesn't like the Beatles at all...
32:45 David just completely melts the faces of the audience for two minutes straight and then sheepishly looks up and goes on to the next song as if nothing happened. I wonder if they provided towels. Magical set. Had the honor of shaking davids hand once. special people.
Thanks for posting this!! I've seen the encore with OCMS and I've always wanted to see the entire show. I love Gillian's voice. So pure, honest, and earthy. Very refreshing.
Is that still gonna be a possibility? I'd jump through some hoops to see these two man... I've become obsessed with Gillian's voice and song writing man
What a great performance. Gillian is the best. I'm not sure, but I think she is playing the rhythm guitar. It sounds like a martin d18 to me. Her singing is so good. I enjoy playing along with this on my martin d18.
Hey Joshua, her main guitar and the one she is playing here is a Gibson J-50. I've read that it's a 1956. It's a great sounding box, and perfect for her style and songwriting. It's spruce and mahogany like a D-18, so there's that similarity. Cheers, and keep on strumming that D-18.
That is all??? Really? Nothing about his playing? When you play like that you can get away with anything else. I forget who the reviewer was but somebody said he was the only man alive who had earned the right to wear a cowboy hat. And how true that is.
Joh 20:27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Joh 20:28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Joh 20:29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
I always thought that she has some faith in her, concerning Christ, sence she sings a lot about Jesus in her song, but some one told me the other day that sheis a non Believer.
David or Gillian? Haha... Oh, no worries John...she's a 'believer.' You can hear the spirit in Gillian's soulful voice. Dave Rawlings, on the other hand, is an absolute heretic. He 'dun sol his sol' to the Devil Incarnate. And, I report to you in good faith: ol' Robert Johnson and Jesus (PBUH) both smile down approvingly as he plucks 'dem strings.' They were both heretics, as well, and recognize their own kind. Amen.
I came here because of Caleb Meyer, but sadly, the only other songs that showed their talents were the classics, By the Mark, I'll Fly Away, and The Weight. Everything else in this concert was a snoozer.
I've watched it a dozen times, still finding meself aplauding, and having a great smile on me face, a great performance ,a great guitar,,, just amazing
They’re like listening to one person with two voices and twenty fingers. They blow my mind every time. Love ‘em.
so do i. im german, but one day i came to all kind of americana. and this two voices blend soooo perfectly together. i have many albums of gillian. i love her little nasal voice. verrrryyyy beautiful. can hear it again and again.
Dave rawlings is just lucky to be anywhere near her... seriously she is a singular genius. He harmonizes well... y'all 🤡
have to respectfully disagree, very far from reality @@ladonaldconcepcion
They are one, everything they do in life is intertwined and life, love, and music.
@@cormackjames I hear you. But she is who history will never forget
Its a crime that only 1800 folks gave this amazing rendition a thumbs up
What a fantastic show. Definitely a keeper to revisit every so often.
I was fortunate to see Gillian Welch and Dave Welch in Eau Claire. Me and my tough buddy cried more than the girl who was with us

David putting on a capo mid-song at 18:04 like it's as natural as breathing. Doesn't miss a beat. Incredible.

They apparently had that quality by the time they recorded their first album...
If anything, it's become more polished over the years.
The first time i heard this about 5 years ago I was blown away, 5 years later I'm still moved to tears by the pure raw beauty of these two, words cannot describe how i feel when I listen to this. What I wouldn't give to see these two live in a small venue somewhere. Xx
Such a gift ... both of them ... spellbinding
wonderful. the greatest duo in modern music.
i only can agree to what all listeners before me wrote. These two musicians arent just the normal bread and butter no way !!! they are top off the bill musicians heavenly voiced but stay so normal. Gillian is beyond belief. Just incredible. True artists. Elvis just amazing.
I keep returning to this concert. And it makes me stop and listen intensively(?) everytime. It's so honest, sensual and beautiful. Yessir.
Intently?
Intensely.
I mean, all of the above, really.

What a great performance!
You have to hand it to the BBC - fantastic sound quality - you can hear both guitars and the individual voices too
Definitely my favourite rendition of Red Clay Halo, such a brilliant concert this. Love them. ❤
Tremendous talents! I never tire of this particular performance. It’s perfection. ❤️
One hour of pure musical substance that can rarely be heard elsewhere. They are an incredibly well kept secret...
Gillian you are amazing! And David you are too. I love Gillian’s lead vox
A gig I wish I'd been at 🧡
Oh God, I can die and go to heaven to their music.

Ya this hits the spot, vocal harmonies are warmly soothing yet heartbreaking at the same time ... and im travelling on the path between.
Great work from the BBC. The fact that the state-owned BBC, and here in Oz the ABC, seem to be so much of the best work in television is an indictment on market theory.
Recently discovered her and she is great.
Ron
Damn he can play there voices melt together.
love this quote from Purdy's New Yorker article "Rawlings’s guitar is both languid and precise. The sound holds moods the way humid air holds smells."
J Ellis that's a great description
J Ellis that’s an interesting comparison.
Dave tears it up... that playing on I'll Fly Away...
38:45 The Way it will be.
My new favorite Gillian Welch /David Rawlings song - perfect performance of a song full of beauty, sadness and longing...
This is perfection!
Ijust saw them in LA,CA they were just as good.the only difference is i didn t have to go to London i'd go c her again
She’s the best songwriter in modern history by far
UNreal... Rawlings is the KING of hollowed out guitfiddle, and Gillian is the most charming ever.
JUST BRILLIANT
Gobsmacked... This is incredible
Perfection!

I would love to... No gigs are listed ATM tho'.
The most perfect harmonies you will ever hear
If I could have any superpower it would be to be David Rawlings.
Their wind up to Caleb Meyer at about 45:00 is so impressive.
Wow mighty fine thanks BBC . Check out early Eagles too .
Dave is the bollocks
it went in the song
DO YOU FEEL THE HAIRS ON YOUR ARMS AND NECK RISING ALLREADY ?? and your face starts glowing, that's just their spell.
Your talented good music and lyrics lol Paul p Birmingham England x
Album "Harrow and Harvest" brought me here
"Time (The Revelator)" is my favourite.
Waiting for solo Gillian
What a great performance. Gillian is the best. I'm not sure, but I think she is playing the rhythm guitar. It sounds like a martin d18 to me. Her singing is so good. I enjoy playing along with this on my martin d18.

Poetry in motion...
Dave Rawlings should be credited as well!
Great!!
David Rawlings' faces :) That is all.

Revelator is Americana Punk Rock - dig it?
I don't think you would want to sleep outside in Cali anymore.
so.. it's ok!

How’s the guy on the out of tune guitar
sounds + looks like Joni Mitchell + Joan Baez
Linda Ronstadt Part Dieux except unlike Linda Gillian writes. For someone born in NYC raised in L A CA she sure sings like a fellow Tennessean.
Dave Rawlings is "the other one" 😋
Video Category: Sports ?
Why TF is the category sports?!?!?! O_o
It's there just to irritate you.
Unsuccessful patter, Dave, but only because it [death etc.] really *is* expected.
I sing songs on my channel xxx
I always thought that she has some faith in her, concerning Christ, sence she sings a lot about Jesus in her song, but some one told me the other day that sheis a non Believer.

I positively disagree but hey, to each his own.
I could listen to this concert’s Miss Ohio a billion times and find something new in the guitar interplay every time
