Anita, my husband and I met as deejays at our college radio station when this album came out in what, 1979? We both loved it. When I scattered his ashes three years ago, and watched them blow away in the wind at Multnomah Falls, I could not get that line out of my head: "Where is on down the line... how far away? Tell me I'm okay..."" I cannot hear this song without tears, both happy and sad.

Know we all miss Maggie; she has certainly passed into the immortal. I have cancer now & am increasingly drawn back to their music.
Do explore their whole discography! So worth it. Some of it may seem dated (not for me, as I lived thru it). But lyrics. Cohesion. Magic.
Love to all. Keep hope & such wonderfully good music alive.

Those three voices, each so full of rich harmonics, each so dead-on in tune, and blending like that....geez, they always sounded like an entire choir, a very tight one. Something about Maggie's stance was so brave and beautiful, and those low notes! Anyway, thanks to the poster of this lovely bit. I only am sorry I never saw them perform.

It was amazing to see them perform their songs so perfectly. They've always delivered their music nearly perfectly. That and the way they brought humor into their delivery and shows made them a must-see every time. We saw Suzzy and daughter Lucy last night. Great songs and humorous repartee as always. I try to see them whenever they're in town. RIP Maggie. 😢

I saw them in Boston when they were first around...small audience of about 50 people, and it was amazing. People were crying because their harmony were so good in that small room. One of them, I think it was Terre, left school to follow a guy to Hammond. It turned out he was a jerk, and they made a song about it. All their songs are about them and their lives....the lyrics are just as wonderfully emotional as their harmony!

A beautiful song and the video production is superb on this - the people who shot this know what they were doing and captured this song perfectly. Maggie's guitar playing is often overlooked and she really propels this along. Its not a whimsical song - its an argument and needs to be sung that way. Other versions take a softer approach which to me doesn't fit the lyrics and tone.

Circa 1996 I fell hard for a tall, willowy blonde gal. After about 2 months of crazy passion she broke it off and I was devastated. When I tried to return a few of her things she told me to keep the 2 Roches CDs. She had played one of them for me to hear “Damned old dog” but I was gobsmacked by the rest of the songs even more. I still listen to the songs from those 2 first albums and they are entwined into my DNA forever. 25 years later and I can still be entranced by the sisters.

It's 100% live you'll be happy to hear. The chorus effect is natural due to the fact that often two parts are sung in chorus (though in different octaves) with only one harmony. Other times there are 3 distinct harmonies. The low quality video accounts for some wavering, but I can assure you that they sound even more unnaturally brilliant without it!

Stunning three part. I run this song thru my nit wit brain a couple times a week. I lived there then and I didn’t go see them. Suzzy and her daughter and Terre perform in my area in NY on occasion. I’ll have to get out more. At least we have the internet now to go to.

Ha ha - the reason is the resonance. Always brings a lump to my throat too - you could never be good enough for this girl.

This song was written by Terry Hall of the Specials, the Fun Boy 3, and the Colourfield. He also co-wrote the best duet song of all time with Jane Weidlin of the Go-Gos. It's called "Our Lips are Sealed" and I'm about to listen to it now.

I'm not sure if you're joking or not. The song was written by Margaret Roche and covered by The Colourfield.

The Roches were in Seattle not many years ago - 2007 ish. Filled a medium sized hall. Also saw two of the sisters after the Zero Church album they put out together near the same time. This was at a smaller venue on Vashon Island. It was a privilege to be there.

I first heard these gals sing back in 1990, while in college. A dear friend turned me on to their music. (Thank you Denise!) I was amazed with their beautiful harmonies and lyrical prose. Very sad to learn that Maggie has passed on. God speed you miss - you were unique beyond measure.

First heard them on SNL and their sound blew me away. Bought the vinyl I still own. Sirens never sang so pretty. "Why don't you face the facts, you old upstart?" So many ugly, mean, shrill, angry voices singing to the same today. Happy to have Joni Mitchell and these girls to test the gold standard!!!

I hate to say it, but I heard them do this when I was 20 in 1981 sitting in a big tent at the Winnipeg Folk Festival swooning at their feet when they just brought the album out with 250 other people falling in love with each of them i rapid fire while they sang and played guitars and sang
Maggy, no Terre, no Suzzy, no Maggie, no
    Terre...
I learned it, and have played it every year since,
once in Mabou Harbour Cape Breton for dinner
    once to get laid
and so many times just for joy

These ladies taught me alot about harmony when I started singing when I was 12 years old. I found this tape in some bargain bin in 1986. I'd never heard of them, had no idea the kind of music they sang. The harmonies of this song really stuck with me. I'm 48 now.

Love you, Desr Maggie-May your soul be at peace and reunited later with your dear sisters when they cross this temporal world's barrier - into the joy and presence of the Lord. You certainly brought part of Heaven here to us. Thank You- Hug and Kiss ❤️
