Great video. I did mine like 10 years ago, but completely forgot how I did it and now it's time to do it again. Watching this, I had no memory that the shift cable / bracket will need to be dealt with before the pan comes off. GM never disappoints in making everything a royal PITA, lol.
The way I did was to put in the edge nearest the crossmember first then swing it up. The way I understand, some of them may not have as much space as mine did so it may be a little more difficult.
I have the Deep Well pan gasket on my 2003 Chevrolet four-wheel drive. I took a different route I moved my crossmember back a half inch so I had great access to the trans pan I have heard other people on RUclips said they did the same thing for four-wheel drives. The crossmember was supported on the passenger side by a jack with wheels so I was able to move it down that one in without letting a bunch of weight sit on the tail shaft of the transmission. It's not that easy with job if you don't have a lift. I have put other people suggest they move the crossmember back there was one guy working with his kid that was saying it and he turned out to be right because it made the job a lot easier once I move the crossmember down towards the back of the vehicle 1 inch
Sounds like that would help greatly, especially with that deep pan. Mine was kinda close but as long as I removed those bolts first, it barely squeaked by.
@@Backyardjackleg you got lucky with it I ended up messing up my shift solenoids one of them bent when I was pulling it out. I tried putting it back in and I realized the thing was bent and not supposed to be so I had to buy new one and stall it luckily I got away without doing any significant damage hoping everything works out good as I am done tapping a new set of threads and tomorrow I put everything back together happy Easter everybody
@@Backyardjackleg oh sweet. On my old 95 blazer the exhaust was so close and the crossmember being right behind the pan I had to drop the exhaust or raise the tailshaft of the transmission just enough for the pan to be able to drop loose. I just bought a 1997 4 door and was worried it would be just like it.
@@thevortec983 I think that as long as you have this 4L60-E it should be the same. I don't know if they put any other trans in these. Good luck, hopefully it will be fairly easy for you too.
Drove one about 4 days now it wont shift, was shifting at like 4k rpms but now wont shift maxes out at like 30/35 mph....think id be wasting money changing filter? Hoping for an easy miracle haha
I'm not a transmission guy, but could be a clogged filter. Probably would be cheaper to change the fluid and filter than having a mechanic check it out, unless you know someone local that could look at it for you for cheap or free. Good luck! 🫰 for a miracle.

1:55 Thanks for making this video it was very helpful.
Thanks, happy to know that it was helpful for you.
Just did mine with very little effort. (1997 S10) Thanks for your video!
Thanks! Will be doing this tomorrow
While you're in there you may wanna change out some of them shift solenoids at least the 1-2 2-3 ones
Can this cause slipping? About to do mine with some Lucas before I go to a shop. Easy?
How do I get the pan back in there easy

Wow, not good. Hope everything works out.
Thank you, I have to do this job today. Appreciate you!!
You didn't raise the tailshaft or anything with the crossmember and exhaust being in the way?
No, the shift linkage was the only thing in the way. I just needed to make sure the bolts next to the crossmember were out first.

How often would you say you'd change tranny fluid and filter?
My manual shows 50k for severe conditions, like heavy towing or frequent off-roading and even heavy traffic in hot climates.
Where do you put the trans fluid? And is there a dipstick for the trans?
The dipstick tube is near the passenger side firewall. It is also the filler tube.

Make sure you're not stuck in 4x4 low
About to do this myself, watched this to see if it was like doing a 700R4. Great video and I appreciate the information 👍
