Probably the most technically correct way to perform a oil and filter change on a 4L60e. From oil , filter and seal removal to filling procedure Thanks for the video for us DIY ers .
Hey thanks man, will do! And thank you for the comment I like that haha. Sad to say that I'm getting a new truck soon so I might lose that resemblance a little bit.
I have a 1995 Chevy K 1500 and only changed the fluid 2 time in 217,000 miles and she is now getting rebuilt for $2,500. She’s worth it considering the price of new trucks that loose value everyday. Love my old truck.
Have a '95 K1500, too. Great truck. Rebuilt the transmission in 2018...works great. Couldn't part with my '95 (new GMC's around here go for 50 grand and up.
After owning our 2000 gmc jimmy for 12 years and only putting on 40,000 km.( Yes Im Candian. ) Having not driven it for 6 years and parked in our covered garage we decided to sell it. We had it inspected. The inspection said that we had a leak in the seal to the transfer case and it was overfull. There was not one spec of oil on our garage floor in 6 years. So I started researching videos. I came across yours and watched it many times. Even though we couldn't find a leak we decided to go ahead and change everything just like your video showed. If not for your video and step by step instructions i don't think we could have done it ourselves. Was there really a leak i don't know, we couldn't find one. But we now know if we ever again have to change the transmission fluid we can do it. Thank you so very much.
Solid video amigo. 16 bolts and square pan for the 4L60E and 17 bolts with 2 rounded corners in the back section for the 4L80E. Figured it out quickly when I climbed underneath my 1994 K2500 6.5TD and realized I had accidentally ordered the wrong filter. :) Good video!
Im so Glad I found your channel. Im fixing to do this for the 1st time on my White 97 k1500. (I do alot of the work on Betsy) myself..(saves me a lot of $$$) an since I'm a girl... It really saves me alot more $$$ than one might think;) Ive owed 3 of these Chevys now..an would Absoululy buy another1. This one is fixing hit 300,000+ too.
Good video. It was easy to understand you how-to instructions. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.. Now tell the automotive engineers to install a drain plug in the pans. Though from my past experience most likely it's the cost accountant's fault there isn't a drain plug in the pan.
Great job with the video. You've made the entire process easy to understand. I'll be accomplishing this task on my no-rust Alaskan 2006 Silverado this Spring or Summer. Thanks!
Nice video... I just did the fluid change on my 98 4L60E. I was able to just drop the pan opposed to removing any obstructions. I was able to undo bolts on passenger side, front & back of pan. Where the shifter is, I was able to just lower & slide the lip of pan past that... You have GREAT content...
High question people say do not change filter when you got over three or four hundred thousand miles should I change the filter or not you did I'm thinking I am going to do it too I like your video a lot will subscribe
Another helpful solution to keeping your fluid changed is to obtain a hand vacuum pump , Northern tool has one, and remove the fluid from the dipstick tube. Just place tubing that will reach the bottom of the pan and pump until no fluid comes out... then refill with fresh fluid .. drive a few hundred miles and repeat the process. Valvoline max life fully synthetic fluid works well. You can easily do this procedure in your driveway and repeat as often as desired. Your transmission will thank you with smooth shifting and a longer life.
hey man, thanks for this video and all the effort you put up while making it. Just recently i got my first chevy, a 1995 suburban, and this video was a great tutorial for me on how to do the transmission oil change. Thank you from Finland =)
Awesome bud, glad I could help! Thank you for the kind words! I have a lot of other videos on these trucks too, feel free to check them out on the channel!
Thanks brotha, I think I can tackle this job now...another video said to throw the new gasket that came with the filter...but they didn't know it was a new gasket lol...I was like whaaaattt?! 😂 I'm excited to do this job now, thanks again!
very helpful and informative. You didn't use rtv because you " didn't have any" but you had to go buy petroleum jelly either. So why did you buy the jelly and not the rtv??? Thanks again for all the helpful info. I also needed the torque for the bolts but maybe I didn't hear you.
Thanks for posting this video. I am getting ready to change the filter on my 2001 Silverado and I am glad I saw this. When ordering a replacement filter from RockAuto I saw that there are different filters for the 4L60E transmission depending if it has a deep or shallow pan. How do you know what depth pan you have for ordering the filter? Also my transmission has a built in drain plug which makes draining the oil easier. Finally in my owners manual they only recommend changing the transmission fluid every 100,000 miles, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt to do it more often.
just did this yesterday on my tahoe. nice job on video but why didn't ya clean trans mating surface before installing pan? you cleaned pan but trans side still showed old gasket material. pretty easy to overlook stuff. i changed pan to one that has a drain plug. i forgot to move my magnet from old pan to new one. so i will be doing this again pretty soon.
This is the best video on this topic that I’ve found on RUclips and I’ve watched probably 20 videos on transmission fluid changes. Excellent job describing how to replace the filter. I didn’t even know what transmission I have until I saw this. I have a 98 k1500 z71 extended cab truck. Any idea how many quarts of fluid is the correct capacity? I can pull the pan and drain it and refill the same amount but I want to make sure it has the correct amount too. Just got the truck a few weeks ago. Not sure if the transmission has ever been done before!
I never knew there was a seal removal tool like that. My old seal was hardened from age; it didn't come out in one piece. I had to use picks and screwdrivers to dig out all the small pieces. My new seal looked different, and it was a genuine GM part. I guess either style does the same job.
your video is certainly helpful.. i have a 93 chevy k-1500 5.7 truck was giving to me replaced all new charging sys. and radiator wires plugs cap unfortunately transmission wires on drvr side melted on bell housing repaired wires one by one replaced blown trans fuse aswell..not sure if you can help but other day driving home from work truck wont shift up to 3 or 4th gr..reason i watched your trans mission fluid change going to do it and was going to replace the shifting solenoids hopefully this will fix the issue..if not maybe will have to replace ECM maybe went bad from the trans mission wires melted and fused together that i repaired no engine lights coming on..sure thankful for any advise you can give thank you sir
Really enjoyed the video but I have a question or two before changing transmission oil and filter in 1995 Chev 305 - 1/2 ton. My parents truck that has 216,000 km and the oil has never been changed. I have lost the overdrive gear when the oil warms after you travel a few kms but the other gears work fine. Am I wasting my time and $ to do the oil and filter change like the video or would it be of any value to drain all of the oil and replace with all new? I would prefer the video plan for sure! It's a spare truck on the farm only used to go back and forth 25 km rtn to town or to auction mart with a 12 foot goose neck trailer. Thanks, Denny
In 07 they advertised a 100,000 mile no maintence truck , only had to do oil changes when it told you too , about 9 thousand miles the light came on , so i ran mobile 1 synthetic ..over 300,000 original motor , trans , transfer case and both pigs ...07 silverado 1/2 ton 4x4 cab and half
You can also disconnect the cooler line start the truck and it will pump out all the fluid...as long as your quick on the key or have someone on the key while you watch the hose no risk of running the pump dry
I need to see the part after you take the cross member off, I'm changing out just the pan, I was told to jack it up a little bit in the back however I'm not trying to do that I just want to take the crossmember off and do it that way I was told I still have to use a jack???
What if you have a big ass metal brace going across the truck that is also attached to the transmission that is completely blocking one side of the bolts on the transmission pan? My 1995 gmc sierra has this and I can’t get to the three bolts on one side at all….
On my 1993 there's a cross member supported the rear of the transmission. THAT sumbich makes what should be an easy job a lot harder. I have to unbolt that thing to make getting to the back 5 bolts a little easier.
Well mine hasnt been changed since i owned it and it has 278,000 miles. Ok do t.think the previous owner did any maintenance at all from what i can tell. I guess i need to find a trans pan with a drain plug in it so i can do it more often
When you slid your finger over the magnet I cringed, surprised the shavings didn't slice up your finger! Great video tho, this got me ready to change my fluid
Gotta do my fluid and filter on my 98 blazer, just looking for the right filter as there seems to be a few different ones 😳 video was a great help tho got a rough idea on what to do now 👍
Hey maN! Great video. I NEVER changed transmission fluid in my life, but, was sure to watch the entiee video before giving it a shot. Great video. Thanks for the help
awesome video sir! I have a question. I got a 96 silverado and there is a cross member blocking the rear bolts to the transmission pan. could I possibly unbolt it and knock it back a little with a rubber mallet to reach the bolts?
Great video! I have what may seem like a weird question - at least it was weird to me when I saw it. I just bought a 1996 c1500 4.3L V6 and I don’t see a transmission dipstick anywhere. Have you come across this before and how do I fill it after the filter change? Any help would be appreciated.
Great video gives me a good idea on what i need to do with my 97 silverado. Shes slipping and i ran into a 30 year transmission mechanic who mentioned to me similar to what you said. To drain the pan and use half of the old and half new fluid. What are your thoughts on this? I plan on doing what you did...put the old fluid into a 5qt jug to see how much was drained and then add new fluid accordingly
What are your thoughts on transmission cleaner (seafoam) just wondering. Have you ever used it or do you think it's worth it? I use sea foam to clean the top of my engine i.e. crank case, fuel tank, etc.
Ok so how do you get the shift cable out of the way nobody in these videos show how to get the one 10mm bolt that's right above it you can't move cable to get to it.
I bought a used transmission 4l60E for my 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 2wd when I was done installing it. It wouldn't get no gears at all how do I fix this problem
Great video,i have a 1996 Chevy Silverado 1/2 ton truck with a 5.7 litre Vortec engine. The problem is trying to determine what size transmission that goes with that engine when i buy that filter. What should i do when i attempt to buy that filter?
To determine the size of transmission in your truck, do this; count the number of bolts that are on the transmission pan, a 16 bolt pan is a 4L60E and a 17 bolt pan is a 4L80E transmission.
Nice but I put me a better pan from summit racing on my 88suburban c20 and it has a drain plug in it so my transmission jobs are just like changing my oil
Nice! I thought about getting a pan with a drain plug in it, but at the end of the day you need to remove the pan anyway to change the filter so I figure it's not worth the extra money to buy a fancy oil pan. It definitely helps with the mess though!

The best video by far on how to do a transmission fluid change.

Will petroleum jelly resist the heat? I worry that it isn’t as heat resistant as other options
How much residual oil is left in the transmission ?
Does all the oil drain into the pan after the auto is parked ?
There’s always some in the torque converter as far as I know

If you do a drain and fill of really good synthetic fluid like Redline every 10k, do you really need to change out the filter?
Thanks Bro! I think I can do this now. And now I understand that it’s important to do this regularly. 👍

Great well explained video!!
Is it okay if a new pan doesnt have a magnet in it?
What if I just want to replace the fluid without changing the filter? Can I remove the fluid without removing the pan?
When you slid your finger over the magnet I cringed, surprised the shavings didn't slice up your finger! Great video tho, this got me ready to change my fluid

On My 97 gmc sierra extended cab the frame is blocking the pan so i cant take it off. Any suggestions?
What size blind hole seal puller for the 4l60e?
Thanks
Hey maN!
Great video. I NEVER changed transmission fluid in my life, but, was sure to watch the entiee video before giving it a shot.

awesome video sir! I have a question. I got a 96 silverado and there is a cross member blocking the rear bolts to the transmission pan. could I possibly unbolt it and knock it back a little with a rubber mallet to reach the bolts?
Would my burb throw codes if I didn't take the old seal out? Lol I now have two seals
Great video! I have what may seem like a weird question - at least it was weird to me when I saw it. I just bought a 1996 c1500 4.3L V6 and I don’t see a transmission dipstick anywhere. Have you come across this before and how do I fill it after the filter change? Any help would be appreciated.
Is it a manual transmission? Lol
what was the cleaner you used?
Did I miss something when you drain the transmisión after you put the new filter? Good video by the way.
at 160k, I'm getting mine done this week 2002 GMC sonoma $300+tx
Can you use carburetor spray to clean the transmission pan up and the mating surface where the gasket sits to seal the pan?
Absolutely, carb cleaner and brake cleaner are my go to’s for cleaning pretty much everything and have never had an issue.
@@MidwestGarage Okay, sweet! Thank you very much for the feedback!

Thanks for video. I need this seal puller..
To determine the size of transmission in your truck, do this; count the number of bolts that are on the transmission pan, a 16 bolt pan is a 4L60E and a 17 bolt pan is a 4L80E transmission.
thanks great job !!
What's your rim/tire set up?
Nice but I put me a better pan from summit racing on my 88suburban c20 and it has a drain plug in it so my transmission jobs are just like changing my oil
Nice! I thought about getting a pan with a drain plug in it, but at the end of the day you need to remove the pan anyway to change the filter so I figure it's not worth the extra money to buy a fancy oil pan. It definitely helps with the mess though!
