I'll be changing my 99 chevy tahoe 5.7L LT v8 rear and front diff oil, has 168k miles and previous owner has never been serviced in its 23 years of existence, besides the oil change and filter ,no tranny top up or radiator flush or drain, to give yall idea of how this vehicle was neglected, heard the slight very slight humming noise from rear diff and got onto internet and started ordering parts and fluid getting this taken care of hopefully in time... (some people shouldn't own vehicles if they ain't gon pay attention to their owners manual and keep up to date with the services it requires).
Good video. Another good tip when you're doing this, changing your oil or anything similar, before reinstalling the drain plug back in, add a small amount of new fluid to help push out any of the old still left behind, then reinstall your drain plug and proceed as normal.
I know this is an old video, but my wife just went to the stealership and was quoted $450 on a “4X4 service” which was only the front and rear diff fluid change. Nothing else. I didn’t want to crawl under my 2004 GMC Yukon, but for a 5 minute service and to save probably $400 after both diffs have the oil changed, I’ll just do it myself. Stealerships are there to just rip us off. Thank you for this and I absolutely subscribed to your channel
Great reminder! First time I changed my front diff fluid it looked like chocolate milk when I drained it. Just changed it again after about 45k more miles and it was just a tad cloudy....not bad. Took me 20 min, most of that time waiting for the syrup to drain. $15 well spent!
I had 214,000 and it look like chocolate syrup. Your video was excellent. Really didn’t even know it was something I was supposed to change or even that it was there. How sad is that? Keep up the good work.
Almost got my finger stuck in the threads trying to test new level. Fun! New washers around plugs, Lucas oil on sale, fun little project to do and satisfying to see the old stuff come out knowing it was a necessary change.
Thank you for this video. Shops will charge ridiculous prices for something someone knew when I was a kid. Im 28 now and do 90% of my own work so these videos really help. plus doing it yourself is how you not only learn, but know if it was done right. 😁
Just found your Video. I am well well past hanging mine. 109000 and never been changed and neither has my Rear Differential. I thank I will change them real real soon. Thank you so much for opening my eyes.
Just subscribed. Your videos are really detailed and thorough. Thanks for making them. It saves the poor man money by being able to do it themselves. Thumbs up my friend!
Just ran across your videos. Thank you! I have a 1999 k1500 Suburban and it seems like all the videos are the newer body styles. I have the old style like yours and the newer models are different. In 99, they made both body styles and everyone uses the newer style. I subscribed and will be watching! Thanks!
I changed the rear end fluid on my H2 2005. Now going to do the front and then knockout my other pickup. Thanks. And it is super easy. Your video helped clarify the project. Good luck on you channel. Saved a chunk of cash. 👌👌👌👌👌
Thx for a straightforward video with the correct info. I haven't checked my fluid, but did replaced a leaking shaft seal on the diff, so I know it will be low.
Thank you for this video explained and instructed so simple. Also you have a beautiful truck! I 33(F) find them soo useful it's my first time doing automotive work. I inherited 94' chevy k1500 from my father that had been left sitting for a few years! Time to get that baby back on the road! So i started with YOUR oil change video, did the front differential yesterday (fluid was black sludgy), next up Transmission filter/fluid! Keep up the content! I'll be watching and learning!
Thank you for the kind words! I'm really excited that the videos are helping you out and that you're getting a great truck back on the road! That's awesome!
Thank you for this, i just inherited a 99 k1500 suburban and there are zero maintenance records up to now where it’s at 130k miles. Im fairly confident its never had anything other than engine oil changes done to it in the past 25 years so im sure the trans, diff, transfer case fluids are disgusting
I have the owners manual for 1999 Sierra. It states to change the automatic transmission fluid and filter at 50,000 miles if the vehicle is driven in heavy traffic, extreme temperatures, in hilly terrain or towing a trailer. If you do not use your vehicle in any of the conditions stated above, then change fluid and filter at 100,000 miles.
Totally totally loved every second of this, you did great commentary was amazing and you gave me a ton of information and it was super simple I've been needing a video like this because I love doing s*** like this on my own time I look forward to more videos from you if you're out you're doing this I'll have to subscribe and filter through your stuff but good job man from a little Podunk ass town in Idaho I sure appreciate this
Thanks bro appreciate the help . Just picked up a 1997 and gonna do the back and front . The back leaks like a drop every few days and it’s like black af so I can imagine what the front looks like lol
i put Lucas oil products in everything on mine from brake fluid power steering fluid fuel additives gear oil and oil enhancers and my trucks nothing but stock 06 Sierra with 276,070 miles and runs like a dream
Well, you have a new subscriber. 1992 ecsb K1500 that is going older school (carb, coil in cap hei, Th350 or 400). And a new to us (3 days) 99 K3500 chassis cab flatbed tow pig with under 134k miles on it. You already showed me how to fix 65mph indicated is 50mph a tual.
Weird that my 2000 silverado calls for 80w-90 in the front where you said yours uses 75w-90. 75w-90 is what my owners manual recommends for the rear not front
75 90 is basically the same viscosity as 80 90.... The first number is the cold weight second number is the hot weight. So warmed up the fluids are the same viscosity, cold the 75 90 is slightly thinner but not enough to change anything
Man I'm embarrassed, I honestly didn't know there was a front diff on my truck. Gotta change it now, not looking forward to how nasty it's going to look. Great video!
Crazy I haven’t done this in 7years 🤦🏽♂️ my 04 gmc yukon has 212k and was handed down from my family, come to find out they never did it since it was purchased in 2006, only oil changes 😂 still runs strong and the 4x4 works amazing! I can’t imagine what it looks like if i was to do this...
I recently bought a 04 Silverado 2500 hd. Changed the rear diff fluid. The truck has 250k miles on it and I bought it for towing. So for safe measures I am changing all the fluids and my rear and front diff were almost clear I was shocked!
Thanks for the video I’m doing mine tomorrow. 2008 GMC duramax looks very similar. I did my daughters 12 Jeep diff and the fluid looked nasty like that.
I was looking at the manual of my 96 Astro van trying to find out something about fuses. That's when I came across to the maintenancing schedule and I read changing "axle fluid". that made no sense to me. It is now two days later I decided to you type it into RUclips and here i am
If it does, hopefully you catch it before it does damage! Mines started out with a hum, so I checked it and it was 1.5 qts low!! 🤦♂️ Anyways, the noise got louder and my bearing races ended up being damaged from running low on fluid. Had to have my rear end rebuilt smh.
So I have a '93 K1500 that the previous owner neglected. I've already had the rear end rebuilt by a local shop. Put a Eaton TrueTrac in with a fresh set of 3.73s and a LubeLocker gasket. Did the 4wd actuator upgrade and rebuilt the xfer case.. all thats left is new diff oil up front. I keep hearing conflicting info about what gear oil to use. I know I have another GovLock G80 diff in the front and the one I removed from the rear clearly has clutch disks in the carrier. This would lead me to believe limited slip additive is needed. Correct?
My 05 calls for 80w90...I do this service every 2 yrs..about 20,000 miles for me,cheap insurance.dont forget to do your transfer case..easy peazy as well.
Do you ever pull the differential plate off and put new gasket on? Or make sure you get all the crap out from the differential? Is it worth running clean through to get more of the crap out.? Good video.
Good video, you are one of two truck guys now I have actually subscribed to. Currently I'm about to do my front and rears on a 2002 silverado Z71 LT, but I am debating on whether to drain and refill my rear or to actually take the plate off because I currently don't have a gasket.
I just bought a 1990 k1500 and they never changed the front differential oil I’m about to change it and was wondering if Lucus has a stop leak type additive in their oil
You'd have to either do some research or pull the gears out and measure to find out the actual size of the ring gear and pinion. Gear ratio would be the same as the rear end though.
@@MidwestGarage they can look up the RPO codes, online>Code for limited slip, posi,is G80,and GT4=3.73 gear ratio. The Codes for the truck, will be in the glove box,on a sticker.
Totally forgot to check the front until I saw this title after looking for transfer case fluid change. Thanks for both videos
Dude you really do a good job with your videos there's no BS it's straightforward easy to understand, Keep up the great work .Thank you😊
On the third video I’ve had to watch you’ve definitely earned a subscriber
Thank you! I'm glad my videos are helpful for you! I greatly appreciate it!
I have a 1998 k1500 that I’m getting back road worthy, and you sir have been a godsend. Thank you thank you
I had 214,000 and it look like chocolate syrup.
Do you mix the lucas 50/50?

Really appreciate you taking the time to show this simple task that is often overlooked... I'll be doing a my '03 2500HD today! Thanks again!
Just found your Video. I am well well past hanging mine. 109000 and never been changed and neither has my Rear Differential. I thank I will change them real real soon. Thank you so much for opening my eyes.
Thanks for the tips and no crazy music just to the point stuff with good camera angles and lighting

Great video mines was bad but me watching your video was great home work before I got it done

Mine looked like yours. Looked like metal in it, right? Glad I did it, cheap n easy preventative work.
Thx for a straightforward video with the correct info. I haven't checked my fluid, but did replaced a leaking shaft seal on the diff, so I know it will be low.

Thank you. Currently snowing and my front diff leaks a little so I’m getting to it!
Great video. Straight to the point. My fluid unfortunately looked like glitter haha.
Awesome!! Thank you so much for these videos. doing my 99 crew cab K2500 today
Thanks for your content mr mid West has helped me out.
Thanks! I'm glad I'm able to help you out!
I know its been 4 years but now they put the fluid in a bag and it makes it way easier...
good video. straight to the point

I’m way past due my front and rear differential. I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 with 314,800 miles and today i’m changing the gear oil today.
Great video. Good pace and delivery.
Thanks bro appreciate the help . Just picked up a 1997 and gonna do the back and front . The back leaks like a drop every few days and it’s like black af so I can imagine what the front looks like lol

thanks so very much. I need to do this and did not know how. Now I do!
Thank you very much brotha. Im doin it myself instead on my 96 Tahoe.
Hi do you have a tutorial video on the rear diff fluid change? Thank you
I don’t yet but it’s in my list of videos for this month actually. Stay tuned so you don’t miss it!

Planning to do my blazer tomorrow thanks great video 💯
Thanks for the great simple instructional video
thanks for this video. I need to change mine its well over due.
I changed both my diff fluids a year & half ago. Old fluid wasn't horrible , but my vehicle requires it changed every 30,000 miles
Greetings from Ukraine army mate! You helped a lot
Weird that my 2000 silverado calls for 80w-90 in the front where you said yours uses 75w-90. 75w-90 is what my owners manual recommends for the rear not front

That was great, that oil looked bad, but not as bad as mine, 198000 miles, and not sure when it was changed last !!!
Man I'm embarrassed, I honestly didn't know there was a front diff on my truck. Gotta change it now, not looking forward to how nasty it's going to look. Great video!

Link for bottle pump?
I was looking at the manual of my 96 Astro van trying to find out something about fuses. That's when I came across to the maintenancing schedule and I read changing "axle fluid". that made no sense to me. It is now two days later I decided to you type it into RUclips and here i am
Ok maybe you can help mine is a 96 Tahoe and I hear a hum when I'm driving. I was thinking the read end is going out. Maybe it just needs fluid?
If it does, hopefully you catch it before it does damage! Mines started out with a hum, so I checked it and it was 1.5 qts low!! 🤦♂️ Anyways, the noise got louder and my bearing races ended up being damaged from running low on fluid. Had to have my rear end rebuilt smh.
Good vid...what I needed 2 see!
04 Silverado here thanks for the helpful video :) That's my project this weekend .
Do you use your 4x4 gears very often?
I have 195k miles with only 2hrs max on my 4x4. I don't use 4x4 very often.
Thanks!! Great video, brother!!
My oil was about the same, I also did my trans case using your video, kinda made me nervous to see blue fluid..😂
Nice video. I've learned a lots Thanks
Outstanding!🇺🇸
Helped out big time brother ty
Awesome. I'm going to change my 97 Silverado.
So I have a '93 K1500 that the previous owner neglected.
I've already had the rear end rebuilt by a local shop. Put a Eaton TrueTrac in with a fresh set of 3.73s and a LubeLocker gasket.

This would lead me to believe limited slip additive is needed. Correct?
May our Lord Jesus Christ bless you brother, and thanks for the well done video...I'm going to get after it soon on my '96 Tahoe.
My 05 calls for 80w90...I do this service every 2 yrs..about 20,000 miles for me,cheap insurance.dont forget to do your transfer case..easy peazy as well.
Would you ever remove front differential cover to clean it and the gears?
Thanks man great video and I got mine done!! And it needed it!!
Thank you so much you've just save me alit of time and money
My 04 Suburban calls for 80W-90 in the front and 75W-90 synthetic in the rear. I wonder if they changed it at some point.
Cheers mate.
Synthetic oil or cheaper conventional gear oil?
Same wintertime temperature where I live as in North Dakota, and my 1988 4x4 1500 turned 120k miles.
Thanks I needed that
Thank you my friend
This is super helpful
Superb video.
I use brake fluid and spray it into fill valve to rinse any debris down and out drain. It will dissipate so no worries
Great video!
Thanks for video buddy!
I have a 1999 GMC P forward 3500 stepvan. how do you change the front passenger side brake caliper key? please
awesome as always! u rock brah! keep it coming, as i will continue to watch, and appreciate ur awesome clear videos.
I just bought a 1990 k1500 and they never changed the front differential oil I’m about to change it and was wondering if Lucus has a stop leak type additive in their oil
I have a 1994 Chevrolet K 1500 extra cab five-speed and thank you
Great video! I subscribed! Thanks for your help!
great tutorial, best one out and very informative thanks- i subbed!
Thanks ! Very helpful and very well explained 👍👍
I noticed the gear oil you are using says limited slip why do they put that label on the bottle just curious
Outstanding!
Great video
Subbed ... great video buddy ...
Do you thi k the fluid/oil you are using is ok to use in a 1999 gmc yukon denali 5.7l v8 4x4
5/8 to 1 and 5/8 below fill hole for synthetic fluid?
Can you use 80W90-GL5,if you add the posi traction additive?
How do you find out what gear and pinion size goes into this vehicle? Is it the same as the rear diff?
You'd have to either do some research or pull the gears out and measure to find out the actual size of the ring gear and pinion. Gear ratio would be the same as the rear end though.
@@MidwestGarage they can look up the RPO codes, online>Code for limited slip, posi,is G80,and GT4=3.73 gear ratio.

Make sure to check your breather while your down there also!
I didn't even know there is differential fluid...................
How didn't you? You think dry gears roll on each other at high speeds without friction destroying everything?
@@centertonarkansastyrantpatrolwe're all learning here
Should it be done ever 30k miles?
Thanks man. Mine looked worse and only collected 1.75 back.
Thanks 👍🇺🇸
My pleasure!
