  • Many Hollywood TV shows, movies and media hypersexualize and oversexualize teens. In this video essay, I discuss the harmful effects of the hypersexualization of teens in the media. Some of these include body image issues and self-objectification.

Food for thought... There was a reason your classmates were behaving that way in sixth grade. Took me decades to realize that a lot of kids have tragic home lives. It's not always the case, but I've had discussions with too many people to not see a pattern.

that's a good point! i don't necessarily agree with people getting mad for that reason, i think it was more parents being upset about how the characters treated their parents, but I'm up for debate on that. I loved the fact that, like you said, they just acted like normal teenagers, and *that* is what we need to see more often, of course within reason.

9:09 Gosh that is DISGUSTING. The fact that I, a stranger, can relate to that. I also went to a catholic school and grown ass MEN were catcalling me and stuff every day for YEARS. I was a KID. Like wtf. How many of our poor girls are going through this all around the world…

yesssssss, thank you for this video! this is an issue thats been bothering me for some time now and everytime that i talk to people about it they think that its "normal", and these themes are for "the art". I mean, what is artistic about grown ups seing teenagers hooking up, using drugs, etc? not that these things don't happen in the real world, but it would make more sense if more productions were made with the audience in mind...

To add to the point of this happening in real life; I think that if they're going to make shows depicting teen sexual activity, then there needs to be more of a realistic aspect to it particularly with the aftermath and consequences like the emotional and psychological damage and fallout from trying to act so grown before your time.

It does happen in reality, I don't see why it should be hidden, but it shouldn't be framed as something "great", and it shouldn't be overly represented. Or they should put a disclaimer before the show/film starts, just in case.

    • @wnterbrd7455
      @wnterbrd7455 13 дней назад

@@virz4432 I do know it happens, having lived it myself. However, it's naive thinking that what is portrayed in the shows is targeted towards that especific young audience, rather than being an oversexualized representation of it for older people's enjoyment. Not only that, the lack of shows with that kind of problems but with older characters reinforce that idea as well.

Have you ever seen the documentary about cool hunting by any chance? A friend of mine showed it to me years ago. It showed how grown adults research and market sex directly to teens. Because teenagers are curious about sex and have it on the brain during development, they will be receptive to hyper sexualized programming- which equals profits for those who force feed it to kids. I forget the name of the program but it was sinister beyond belief. LOVE your commentary!

That was a good point about guys thinking that they need to rack up bodies with all the baddies they can. Chasing/obtaining/being trophies was a huge part of the media i watched in the early 2000s. It made me think i had to be the perfect girl walking in slow mo that guys wanted. But i wonder how that stuff influenced boys

Ironically, the hypersexualized behavior that is rewarded as a teen is the same behavior that gets you outcasted or labeled as "embarrassing", "lacking self control" or "fun girl" (the one people have sex with but will never date) as an adult, not to mention the emotional damage it can cause to those perpetuating it. As an adult, hypersexual behavior can have consequences. It's harmful to sell this behavior as the way forward to teens, especially since their brains aren't even fully developed yet.

    • @virz4432

Right. It should be the opposite.
Sex only for and between adults.
      (Obviously, with a legit consent)
Not for minors, teenagers or not.
      Not "shamed", just discouraged.

I cringe when I think about some of the outfits I was wearing and suggestive dances I was doing as a child/teen. The media is poisoning our youth 😔 I have an 8 month old daughter and 3 year old son and let me tell you, I will be teaching BOTH of them to carry themselves with dignity and to be KIDS! I wanted to grow up too fast thanks to how Hollywood portrayed teens. Let KIDS be KIDS! Great video ✨

I don’t think it’s fair to write off Veronica’s behavior in 6th grade as purely fueled by media and social gratification. There are deeper and more troubling reasons for girls acting out in that way at such a young age. I get that you were bullied for maintaining your boundaries around sexuality, and that’s not cool, but not all young girls were raised in an environment where they were taught to have boundaries. If I were to wager a bet, I’d guess Veronica has had quite the healing journey in her adult life, and I don’t think you’re giving her a fair edit. Love all your videos❤ just think you could’ve handled this point with a bit more grace 🙏🏼
