The Wild West and Pirates...Two settings that I wish were visited more in games.

The wild west is just our current world without electricity (play RDR2 for that and have fun for 4-8 weeks) and Pirates, well they're just criminals on sea.
What you mean by "pirates" is imo you want a decent ship/boat/sea game, like Assassins
Creed did multiple times. And sea of Thieves. And Subnautica. And...

Shadow tactics was my first time dipping my toe into the water with this particular genre, and I've been waiting for this game since. Anyone who hasn't should definitely pick up shadow tactics

MrHenrik747 oh yeah Commandos was great too. I only played the second one and it felt a little more dated (played it a couple years ago) but all the games they make are great.
For those on the fence, there is a free demo on GOG, letting you play the first 2 levels and a bit more.
There is also demo on steam. I'm gonna try that first but this is almost a solid buy from me even without that.

There ain't too many of these Commandos types, with Shadow Tactics being the most recent I recall. Glad to see this seems to be a good one.
It’s created by the same devs for shadow tactics.
It's pretty much the same game. Just a bit better on all fronts. More interesting tactics, better voices, better music, more interesting maps, better game features, fewer controls oddities... But it's not A LOT better. It's just enough of the same to directly hit anyone who simply wants more, and at the same time, it's enough new stuff to stay interesting, and it's so standalone that you don't have to even know about Shadow Tactics. IMHO they knocked it straight out of the park with Desperados 3. It's just That Good.

This game is so good. Was lucky to get it early and it's such a blast. Very difficult, but a ton of fun.
I share your proclivity for Westerns. There's just something unique about that frontier of civilisation clashing with the wilderness and the people in between.
ArchThorn hopefully there are more western games in development. I’m a huge red dead fan and love the western games.
@@JerryPenna I don't know if you've heard of it or played it before, but I really love Crytek's Hunt Showdown. It's not a true Western title because it combines the setting with the supernatural but it's certainly one of the most atmospheric shooters you can play and it's very unique gameplay wise.

those like me who played the original one back in 2001-2002...are probably watching all these reviews with hope that they enjoyed this genre...so we can get these awesome games more frequently...MIMIMI is a godsent game dev company for us
Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive is still my favourite stealth strategy game. The characters and missions were so good. I especially loved how it was the first in the genre to have guards remember when their friends disappeared. It looks like they've extended this to light sources in this sequel. Glad to see this series is still going strong.

i read somewhere that Kalypso was making a new one, but i just hope they make it as good as Mimimi, as they really have hit the head on the nail on these type of games

Cheers for the swift review, I planned to pick this up anyway but this totally sealed the deal. Regarding the detail problems at 4K, Shadow Tactics (their previous game) let you select up to your native res but it actually couldn't render higher than your desktop res: so make sure desktop is set to 4K and see if that helps? I remember it being really weird like that, took me ages to truly get it to render in 4K.
They seem to have fixed that in Shadow Tactics according to pcgamingwiki (They give is a perfect score for 4K support), but I still think there is something weird going on there, as I could never get it to look clean even recently.

I came to Desperados 3 from Game Pass. Playing on controller works (and I was kind of surprised) amazingly well! I grabbed Shadow Tactics on Steam - also tons of fun, same great controls and play style set in a different era. I played with Keyboard/Mouse for a bit, and it works well, but I changed to Controller and that's my preferred method of play in both games. Kudos to Mimimi for making the games I didn't realize I love playing.
This caught my eye immediately when I seen it. Def looks like an interesting pick up to add to the collection.

Commandos 2 was one of my childhood games. Maybe I'll give this one a try.

Commandos was absolutley legendary when i was young. I was too young to beat it. But, i played that and Age of Empires endlessly as a youngster.
Wild West Shadow Tactics sounds good to me.
The first Desperados is one of them games I always remember playing. During lockdown I played it again. Still awesome music. Can't wait for this.
Loved the 1st and 2nd Desperados games, so glad they are bringing it back. Great Review! Hoping Commandos comes back too but with a modern urban warfare take.

I'm very excited for this. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun was my game of the year of 2016, beating Dark Souls 3, Dishonored 2, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Doom and Uncharted 4. It was a game type I had waited years to play, and while it looks like they are using almost the exact same type of characters as Shadow Tactics, why change something that worked so well.
Desperados wanted dead or alive was one of my childhood games that I fell in love with immediately. The sequels did not connect with me somehow, but this looks amazing.
We need more games like this and hopefully the Commandos series gets a similar treatment 🙏🏽 I posted a playthrough for the entire demo and it's indeed an incredibly fun game; really excited to get this! Definitely a day-1 buy for me 🙂

I love westerns. Wish we had more games set in the time.
The beauty of the Western genre is that you can use it in different settings too.
Science Fiction Western - Versatile and can be a blast
Post-Apocalyptic Western - One of my personal favorites
Fantasy Western - Unique and seldom seen
Modern Era Western - Hard, but doable
I’m really into western stuff, I’d recommend for anyone into Western fiction the books Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. Wraiths of the Broken land by S. Craig Zahler

I still remember Desperados: wanted Dead or alive from 2001 and was waiting for a proper continuation of the game. After 19 years I guess I finally found it. I really which if the devs put some effort to Remaster Desperados 1 to 4K, then it will be epic
Maaaaan, I played shadow tactics for longer than I should have, it was hard for me, but it was constantly fun. I can't wait to get into another tactical experience, I'm excited for a game in a long time. Great review, great listening to a good reviewer for once
I'm more of a FPS type of gamer, but played most of them on my iMac and decided to give this game a try. At first I wasn't really into it because it didn't feel immersive like a FPS or TPS game. But after about 2 levels, wow, I became addicted. It was a great way to exercise my brain and the characters really got me immersed into a game I didn't think I would. And with all the levels, bonus challenges and DLCs, the game is worth every penny!
Also, the devs did a great job because this game played smooth as silk on my 7 yo iMac, even on high settings.
I wish they would support ultrawide properly. Unity engine supports it perfectly with Hor+ (adding screen estate left/right); Instead devs chose to set it to vert-, cutting off screen estate top and bottom to make it fit. While still playable in 21:9 if you pan a lot, it gets worse at 32:9 where you can barely see half of the screen anymore.
FINALLY! IT'S HERE!!! Loved the OG games. Loved the Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun these guys made before this one. Will buy this one 100%
Now we need Desperados 1 Remaster.
No money to buy Desperados 3, will wait for a sale. So have been playing Call of Juarez Gunslinger instead. That is a good wild west game too!

I played Commandos, Desperados, Robin Hood and Shadow Tactics. They were some of my best gaming experiences ever. Love these games
The first thing I search for are you reviews for games, easily the best reviews I've seen on RUclips. I'll be saving up the pennies for this one, it looks very good indeed, and right up my street.
Just love the isometric view and the level of details in the world.
Definitely hope to pick this up some time in the future.

How is shadow tactics? Does it have a good curve for new players to this type of game? It looked interesting to me but haven't yet pulled the trigger on it.

@@Swolling It start of pretty simple and gets more complex as new characters and new mechanics gets added. I'd say learning curve is just right, personally.
This game is phenomenal. I'm 16 again playing this. Stayed so true to the original I am eternally grateful to the devs. Never thought I'd get to play a sequel to this gem of a game ever again.
I beat Shadow Tactics Blades Of The Shogun a few months ago and I loved it so this is a must buy for me. And I find it interesting that he's also played through that game and didn't mention it once throughout this whole review.

Gets in to my top 5 gunfire effects list for its black powder levels of gun smoke jetting out of the guns and the smoke trails. Works for locating the danger and looks cool AF.

As a long term rts fan of this genre this game has delivered after the successful release of Shadow Tactics. I hope they can revive the Commandos series next.

You are correct, this game is very similar to Hitman in the way that they are both Puzzle games in disguise.

This genre of game always had a special place in my heart. I still remember how much fun I had with Commandos 1 and recently, Shadow Tactics. But it was a little weird that in Shadow, you use ninja, samurai and stuff, while EVERY single enemy had a gun, haha...
Definitely will buy this one, so much in love with this kind of games. Commandos is still one of my favorite and Shadow Tactics was a blast too

After the Commandos 2 remaster dud, I'm glad to see Shadow Tactics wasn't a fluke... they actually are the new kings of this type of game. I really hope their third game will also be in this style (but different timeline).

Mimimi-Productions is a great developer. Met the guys on Gamescom and saw Desperados 3 there for the first time. As a fan of the Commandos-Series this is a instant-buy for me. Try also the previous game "Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun".

So glad this follow up from Mimimi Games turned out well, a solid western is a rare treat in video games. This setting especially offers more variability than Shadow Tactics, so hopefully we'll see a spinoff or a proper sequel in the future. Whatever it ends up being, I'd like to see multiplayer for some real-time coordination between the characters.
I grew up loving the comandos games and never gave desperados a shot. I am not gonna do the same mistake again. Good review man
While I enjoyed dramatic story and characters of Shadow Tactics a lot more, Desperados 3 perfected everything else.
I hope MIMIMI Games will keep making those beautiful games for long time !
I played the demo, was waiting for a game that emulates the Commandos game style, loved it so much that I went and bought Shadow Tactics, a 2016 game from the same developer with same gameplay mechanics but set in Feudal Japan and pre-ordered this as well. Can't wait to post walkthroughs of this on my channel :)

I watched a video once about different types of music. In it they explained how surfer music is western music just a different way you either use it or what tone or speed is used. That said I'm so glad to hear the music is spot on. I find it hard to get a hold of good western music.
Good western games are so rare, I am really excited to start playing this game. I played the steam demo and was instantly stoked.

It’s always nice to have a good challenge in a game. This is something I’d like to pick up at some point.
This game and shadow tactics give a great feel of agency. The opposite of cutscenes taking controll away from you.

I have not played this type of game since Commandos...however I remember it was very frustrating and I reloaded a ton because something always went wrong.

Even sounds like a game that I might play -- "western" usually ends up being a stealth mode for my game radar, but with everything else, especially the difficulty adjustments (which I read as 'I doesn't need to be over-the-top-difficult'), it still seems interesting.
This looks a lot like shadow tactics which I loved. I really want to try it but there are too many games in my backlog. Most likely I will wait for a while. Thanks for introducing and reviewing. 👍

Usually, I don't buy CEs, but I had to make an excetpion here. Gosh, I've waited 20 years to get a proper Desperados game... Although I did like Shadow Tactics, Desperados settings was always number one for me. Cannot waint until I get the game next week.
And for the love of god, people, please buy the game to support the develeoper. We need more games like this.
