Hiya! I'm really happy for everyone who found this video helpful. I'm grateful for all the game recommendations and all the feedback. Kinda sorry I didn't use a better mic, but wasn't really planning for 20,000 views. I was thinking more along the lines of 2,000 when I wrote this video. :D Since some of you are getting (rightfully!) excited over a political comment I made and sometimes draw wild conclusions, let me clarify: - Yes, I do not condone Russian aggression in Ukraine. - But also I do not condone Russophobia. A lot of Russians do not support the war either. All of you guys are absolutely welcome here. - I do not condone Stalinist apologia. I appreciate the efforts of Russian partisans, but I do not appreciate the medal from Moscow at the end of Partisans 1941. - I do not condone American interventionism/imperialism. - I do not condone British colonialism. - I do not condone Polish nationalism. - I do not condone racism. - I do not condone any country's aggression towards any other country, or any war crime that has been perpetrated against any group ever. Feel free to discuss politics as much as you want. Are any games on this list American or Polish or Chinese propaganda? Are any of them harmful? Go ahead, comment to your heart's content! Just please don't put words in other people's mouth and be civil. We are all people and we all share the same planet, so let's be nice to each other. :)
After Commandos 2, we gamers were starved for nearly two decades. Mimimi has single-handedly revived the genre. The upcoming Shadow Gambit already looks to be a winner. The least we can do is to support them commercially and keep the genre alive.
Man am I glad that YT recced this video to me because wow I was utterly obsessed with Desperados 1 demo back in the day, to the point of learning about warez just so that I can dl and play the full game, because gaming was such an expensive hobby in early 2000s indonesia and i was a broke kid. Shadow tactics was such a wonderful revival, and Desperados 3's announcement filled me with sheer joy.
me too desperados 1 was the first game i get in my old potato pc and i replayed it many times i still remember most of the level and especially Sanchez fortress that game was so good
Robin Hood was my first game ever so its very dear to me. The medieval setting, the missions that made you feel like a hero, the sieges of the cities and castles made me fall in love with this genre. Not to mention I learned to speak English at an early age thanks to the dialogues between characters!
@@waskerton Also the attention to detail, it looks way better than desperados and the ones that came after (except for Blades of Shogun, which is freaking beautiful).
These type of Realtime Strategy Stealth games are one of the most underrated genre in gaming I remember playing only commandos 2 back when i was a kid, not knowing what to do (except shooting enemies with guns and uses disguises, because i don't know english then). And now, i'm on my 20s and finished some of it Commandos Behind Enemy Lines Commandos 2 Commandos 3 Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun (and Aiko's Choice DLC) Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive Desperados 3 And Partisans 1941 I never thought i'd finish these games because i'm not too interested in Strategy type games before But i've proved myself just how wrong i am
i only watched the first 3 minutes and felt i need to comment already: this video so far is VERY competently made, either you are a natural or you put good thought into the structure, laying the groundwork with the 5 rules and presenting the father of the genre as an example is something the average new youtube dude wouldnt make, also your script if you used one is well written, you clearly get across what you want to tell the audience, your delivery could use some work, but also has kind of a rough charm, so i have one question: why so far is only one video on your channel? you already have over 130 subscribers, thats a massive amount for just one video, i hope you didnt give up or something because again - just the first 3 minutes made me write this comment, please make more content :)
This video has been brewing in my head for years, and I haven't really planned any follow ups. Seeing the response, however (which warms my heart, seriously), I've actually started thinking about maaaaybe doing some more, but with a day job and a metric ton of other hobbies, it is taking a while. :) I hope the rest of the video does not disappoint you though! A good start is still just a start!
@@waskerton looking forward for more, videos, and you made me wanna play some of those games again. please keep one thing in your head hough: dont force yourself, do it on your own pace, see it still as a hobby, if you dont do that, making such stuff will somehow feel like a duty or work, your passion is in the video and i bet everybody felt that, one video made out of passion is better for you and the audience than 10 videos that are made just to make content :)
Loved the video, broseph! Been searching for more Commando-like games recently. I have to make a suggestion to add to this list. Aliens: Dark Descent meets all your commandoments! Isometric perspective? Check. 2. Each character in the squad has different abilities. Check. Their abilities are all equally useful depending on the situation as well. 3. Emphasis on stealth? Check. You may not think so given the trailers. However, the more combat you get into, the more the hive is alerted, which means the harder the mission becomes until it's untenable. If you don't practice stealth, you will not win. 4. Enemy Vision cones? Check. Unless you're being pedantic. No cones, but vision circles and lines informing you that enemy doesn't see you, is about to see you or has found you. 5. Save scumming as an intentional design. Absolutely. Even in the first mission, there's a boss fight that if you just walk in without a plan, you will be decimated. There's no warning, and there are other times the game will just take a massive dump on you. You just have to ration your saves, however, since it follows a risk vs. reward playstyle. As someone who grew up playing the Commandos games, I would say that A:DD absolutely belongs on this list. 10/10 it's my favorite game of 2023.
I played Commandos 2 a long time ago, not really understanding what kind of game it was as I was a kid. I recently bought Aliens Dark Descent and forgot how much I enjoyed real time tactics games.
Great vid, mimimi already put some serious details on their shadow gambit title, I sense its going places. I feel a real desire to see a commandos like set in the last of us universe. Killing clickers with breakble shives in a well timed fashion as well as the general limited supplies could really lend itself well to the style.
Not only The Last of Us, I feel like zombies in general have potential. I always liked this one mission in Desperados where you're caught in a fight between the bandits and the army, and I always liked how in Commandos 2 you can get wild animals to eat an enemy. So how about an entire game built around these mechanics. Two words: horde management. :D
@@waskerton plenty of aspects from the older games can be made more central in future rtt games. Horde management, ambushes, under water and above water gameplay, prison escapes, social stealth (modern spies/ hitman commandos style would be dope). I even felt what commandos 3 tried to do with Stalingrad where the map gradually expands and escalates into a different play style was a cool idea with a somewhat poor application.
@@waskerton I actually work as a game and level designer though not on this kind of games. Maybe in the future 😃 Still, from my perspective, the most crucial aspect of RTT is a level design which compliments the character rooster, its why games where you can select the team like Robin hood, feel too watered down to me, puzzle wise and very easy to abuse. Shadow tactics, on the other hand felt very balanced in letting every character have their moment to shine, with the most abuse able character being let go in the latter part of the game. It was a brilliant decision both story and gameplay wise. It is why the open ended style of shadow gambit concernes me a bit, but let's see what Mimimi can pull off.
@@eylam90 I hear what you're saying, but as flawed as Commandos 2 was (being very open ended, but also very prone to exploits and overusing certain mechanics), it made me think that sandbox-type design can work in this genre. Same thing with Robin Hood. Sure, such game would have to be easier and less puzzle-like, but other aspects can be the focus instead (exploration, story, player choice). So I too am worried that Mimimi might be out of their depth here, but... well, I'm happy that they're experimenting with something different. So far they did a good job polishing the genre into great shape, so... :)
My uncle introduced me to Desperadoes when I was about 10 years old, I used to spend hours trying to finish every level asking my uncle for tips how to complete, often he wouldn't tell me and would make me figure stuff out, it was my first PC game. For me as well Shadow Tactics comes out better than Desperadoes 3, the story is better and by the end you feel Hayato's anger and become more vicious with your strategies. Its one of the best games I have ever played.
Thanks for the comment! I introduced my father to Commandos 1 when I was about 10-11 years old and he got hooked on it for a while. I agree entirely on Shadow Tactics! Now the question is: is Mimimi going to top their previous games with Shadow Gambit? It looks pretty good on the first trailers.
we really need a modern military real-time tactics stealth aka Splinter cell real-time tactics stealth i just think that would be awesome and the perfect theme
The first commandos and its expansion were really hard but you could cheese through just by hiding behind a wall and picking off enemies one by one when they came to investigate after the shooting noises. It was difficult and messy but it could get you through a tough mission if you were tired of playing properly. The trick with the first games (I finished both) was to place barrels and explosives in a way that would allow you to blow up the barracks (buildings with a flag on them) all at once. If you failed and a barrack didn't go down (maybe the barrel or bomb was not close enough), the ruckus would make the surviving building spawn lots of reinforcements that would start scouring the map kinda randomly. Very hard to avoid but you could then resort to ambushing them and finish them off. The process of sneaking around placing barrels and bombs in the perfect spots (though it needed some testing via save-scumming) was really exciting and very unique. The problem with this was that not all characters were able to place bombs or pick up heavy stuff and this forced the player to slowly move around the map until the dominoes were all set. Then it was just a matter of zooming out the camera and watching the fireworks. Very nice memories. Great games.
Thank you so much. I have loved Commandos 2 since I was maybe six years old and I'm still playing after 20 years. I can't count how many times I've finished it.
Thank you for making me nostalgic by discussing the Commandos game. In 2000 I was able to buy a computer with an Intel Pentium 2 for the first time, and at that time I installed the game Commandos Behind Enemy Line.
Commandos 2 is one my favorite games of all time, and honestly I managed to figure out all of these mechanics you mentioned in the game without reading any manual when I was 11-12 years old. At that time I basically just pressed random keys on the keyboard to find out what each did, like the Inspecting/Examine action by clicking W or throwing cigarettes by pressing T. Wasn't intuitive, but wasn't impossible to figure out either. My biggest annoyance was with Commandos 3 was that they changed all the keybinds you were familiar with from Commandos 2. Edit: I wrote these things above before hearing your opinion about Commandos 3 and I'm glad I wasn't the only one annoyed about the rebindings they did and how lackluster this game was. :D
I couldn't figure out two things in Commandos 2: how to rotate the camera and open doors, and that's because you have to press two buttons at once to do these things. And you have to know that you CAN do these things at all, which wasn't obvious either. :D My respect that you were able to work it out without a manual. Yep, the rebinds in Commandos 3 were awful. :D
@@waskerton Haha oh I assure you, I didnt find these things easy though. I just felt it was strange that enemies could use doors and I couldn't, and the same with that some angles were just impossible to see anything from so it was required to being able to rotate the camera view somehow. :)
Commandos 1 was so scary. While it get's somewhat "easy" when you abuse the quick-save system, i had multiple situations, in which i saved a gamestate where some enemy corpses where hidden too badly, causing an alarm later down the line. So then i kinda have to start the mission over
I'm playing Commandos 2 and I have finished Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive. First time, in 2023. Desperados is legit one of the most difficult games I've ever played, but it's so good.
@@muhammadamirfaizal8588 The later missions can be really challenging for sure! It's amazing how well the game holds up today. Those 2d sprite based games age so gracefully. Enjoy Commandos 2 btw! That soundtrack lives rent free in my head 😆
@@GameTalesHQ The later missions will fuck you up if you're not careful. Heck, they'll fuck you up even when you're careful. Thank you! I'm not far off from beating Commandos 2! It's so good, and yeah, the OST is so good!
Had to comment. Thanks. I was addicted to Dune II back in the day, but wasn't allowed to play Commandos for some reason. Years later, confusing Commando style games for DUNE type games with blood, I came across Desperados 3 at a mates house and fell in love, and now I'm 4 levels into Shadow Tactics after finding this video wondering where all these cool games were.... And then I find out about Shadow Gambit? Yeah, thanks Waskerton. You answered a question I didn't even know I needed answering from my youth and made gaming feel fresh again. Cheers.
commandos: origins announced btw, it is such a crime this RTT genre so underutilized, i can't believe there is only 17 games since it appeared. Played a lot commandos 2 and desperados: wanted dead and alive back in the days never complained how hard it is since i thought 'games' supposed to be hard like this but turns out this genre is one of the hardest LOL. It is a damn shame mimimi games closed down but i can understand this genre is pretty niche and production value must be high since one of requirement is high replay value. I really want desperados 3 sequel that cover event between it and desperados: wanted dead or alive man, even thq nordics consider it on survey one year after desperados 3 released. :(
Hi Waskerton! Thank you for your great video. I am Chinese and I can confirm that the Mission 1937 has indeed some notability in China. I remembered reading the reviws of that game on Teenage Software magazines (which most kids buy because of the game section) back in early 2000s. And I did manage to play it for a while in around 2005. The game borrows heavily from Commandos and the character cast in it almost have a 1-to-1 reference from the characters in Commandos. The AIs are stupid. And if your reflex is good, you don't really need to care about breaking stealth and it becomes somekind of click shooting action game. That being said, the game is actually playable and the gameplay feels kinda... OK. It takes heavy influence from the rich works(films, comedy, TV shows and comics) about Sino-Japanese War and have some nice interesting touch such as you can use live chicken to distract enemies ( not as effective as cigarettes because they run away randomly after being placed). Still, people who are not from China may barely enjoy it without the context.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! It sounds pretty cool; if only this game was made available commercially again via GoG or Steam and translated into English, I'd give it a try! Chicken distraction sounds amazing, love that. :D
I recall a game called "Soldiers: Heroes of WW2" which is worth a try, especially because of the high grade of realism (tanks need to be refueled, ammo is limited etc). A bummer you didn't list Star Trek: Away Team. Yes, it has its bugs- a lot to be honest. But the story and the graphics make it worth playing, not to mention the cameos of Michael Dorn and Brent Spiner. Especially the ending is well written. Another honest suggestion is "War on Terror". That game is rather unknown but there are many mechanics to combine. I have to agree that Mimimi games takes the cake. I loved the asian setting of shadow tactics and Desperados III was fun to play- until I had to consult a solution guide on how to position the crew to beat Frank that is. The graphics are timeless and the characters are well developed as well as the endless possiblities on how to use the characters and abilities. Desperados 1 was a hard son of a b*tch but I celebrated the second when I managed to beat 'El Diablo' after a lot of trial and error-ing. I can't wait to see the next Mimimi game and until then I am gonna try the Add on for Shadow Tactics and the Desperados III DLCs. A good video, you earned a like.
Oh wow, this is the video I've always been hoping to exist. I've been in love with the genre since I was little, but only got to fully experience them in the last few years. And, I have the same chanting for both the genre, and this channel, WE WANT MORE!! WE WANT MORE!! Please do upload more in-depth reviews of these games in the future. Like one episode for one (or more, like expansions, etc.) game, or explaining about the franchise too :D :D
You're tempting me. I'm considering it, but I don't know what I'm gonna do. I am not exactly planning a RUclips career, but I have obsessively enjoyed these games, so... I could gush about them a little more. :D
I just played the demo of shadow gambit wondering where that genre of games was all my life and behold, you have them all listed here. I am going to have a good time!
Hey, I'm that one guy from Czech Republic that at least knows about Korea: Forgotten conflict, but I must be upfront right away. The only thing I know about this game is that it wasn't great and me and my dad played it once by accident. My dad was a HUGE fan of the original Commandos Behind Enemy Lines and Commandos Beyond the Call of Duty. When I was sick and he was home with me to take care of me, he used to play and I was laying down on the couch watching him play. When he bought Commandos 2 we both did a somewhat of a competetion who'll beat it first with ALL the bonus mission medals... maaan good times, but when we were about to get Commandos 3, let's just say my dad wasn't exactly happy to ... BUY ... every single game :^) To be honest back in the day, most of the games were impossible to get here, as long as the game didn't have an OFFICIAL Czech translation, getting your hands on a copy was quite the hard task so many people who know how to burn CDs ran these "small businesses" of selling games/music CDs and to this day I have TONS of these CDs ... well they are at my parent's house, but we all have 'em. And when he heard from his friend that he knows a guy that knows a guy that's sellin' burned CDs of Commandos 3? My dad just have him the money and one week later we had that CD home, both ready the play the shit outta that game, but it was the aforementioned ... well, garbage. At the time we knew like "Hi, yes, no, goodbye and please" and even movies used to change names between episodes so we thought they might've just changed the name completely to something else :^) But I digress, the intro of the game if I remember was straight ripoff of the Commandos 2 intro, with the real life footage, but for some reason I remember it looked like those old FMV Command & Conquer type of shite. We both played the first mission and we for the love of god couldn't kill the first guard. Every time we tried to knife him, our character would get stuck and just wouldn't follow him over to the next vagon. The next thing I remember is my dad somewhat pissed off he payed for such bullshit :^) Later that day we had an icecream since he said He'd rather die from his Diabetes problems than play any of that game. It's 100% among the ton of other CDs so when I'll stop by and maybe remember, I'll try to pick it up and ran it on either virtual machine or I'm willing to bet one of our old PCs are still gonna be kept in the basement somewhere :^) Off topic: We used to play Might and Magic 6, 7 and 8 as a whole family. My parents, my brother and sister and me all had dedicated save spots, we all had turns and collectively clawed our way towards the end of each game. My dad always had this issue of finding his way around the world, since he never remembered which location leads to another. So my mom drew a huge map of all the locations how they are connected and on each page was a huge map of each location with all the buildings, dungeons... all the houses had text if there's a teacher and if they are either an expert, master or grandmaster. Which potion color do what, combinations of potions to create white and black potions. All the quest guides where certain quest items are kept and so on... We even used to play god damn Quake on LAN to decide who's gonna clean the dishes ... I fucking love my family for real My family FOR SURE ain't perfect, but man these memories of playing all those games together or against each other... Age of Empires 1 & 2, Starcraft, Quake and Quake 3 Arena, Contra, Battle City on NES (well, polish bootleg of famicom console called "Micro Genius IQ 502" also known as PEGASUS in Poland and in Russia it was called "Dendi" if I'm not mistaken) I seriously consider my childhood perfect. Always bruised up from playing outside through out the day and in the evening we used to play on PC or NES ... what else would child need innit?
much needed video man, saved me weeks of research being a huge fan of this genre, btw talk about Commandos: Origins so we all can jump to interesting discussions about that.
Thank you very much for compiling as much titles as you know! I just knew that Robin Hood game existed, I have to try despite of lackings here and there. And yeah, next Mimimi game is definitely making me on the edge of my seat!
wow, your first upload and it's already well done. hoping for more content! fr example, why did 3rd person stealth games win out against commando-likes?
This is an excellent video! Thank you very much, as I've thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from all the information and commentary about each game. I've recently gotten into RTT, and I have since played: Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (beaten) Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun - Aiko's Choice (beaten) Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive (beaten) Helldorado (playing) Desperados 3 (beaten) Partisans 1941 (playing) Commandos 2: HD Remaster (played for two levels, before deciding that it's not worth it) This is an excellent and overlooked genre, at least for right now! Waiting to play Commandos: Origins, Stargate: Timekeepers ! I think I should also probably play Commandos 3: HD Remaster based on what you said. All-in-all, excellent video!
Thanks! Commandos 3 is a better remaster, but not as good a game as Commandos 2. Your mileage may vary. If you liked Shadow Tactics and Desperados 3, then the new Shadow Gambit is also a great choice. :)
@@waskerton You're welcome! Yea a lot of people said that Commandos 2 is the better game, but I'm not really sure if I can run it on modern hardware/OS. I mean it can be done, people say you have to use DirectPlay or DirectX 5 or some fixes for resolution and FPS and what not. I might give it a try. I've been curious about Shadow Gambit too, and I'll try that soon :) have you thought about making a video addressing some other (debatable) RTT titles that people have suggested? Or any other video, for that matter?
@@muhammadamirfaizal8588 OG Commandos 2 is not the hardest old game to run on a modern PC, but yeah, I see your point. Regarding an update video about genre-adjacent games recommended by people: yeah, I think about it a lot. I would like to make something like that once I finish Shadow Gambit. I also thought about maybe making some other videos, but my other hobbies have way more coverage online. If I did a video on, say, PS1-styled horror games, I'm not sure if I can bring anything new to the table. :)
@@waskertonYou're right! I just bought Commandos 2: Men of Courage on Steam and it worked without any issues right off the bat! (granted, I typically don't care about having widescreen resolution or anything like that, but there's no other issues that I can see). There is a certain jank and clunkiness in its design that I think is the product of its time, but it still feels pretty good to be honest. So far, I'm really enjoying it! I'll be savouring every moment, then :) It's ultimately up to you at the end of the day, but just give it some more finalising thought after finishing Shadow Gambit :D What do you mean by "but my other hobbies have way more coverage online"? I think you can bring something new to the table: yourself!
@@muhammadamirfaizal8588 Glad Commandos 2 did not disappoint you! :) I meant that the other games I play are more popular, and there are lots more videos about them on RUclips. I would like to make videos about stuff people haven't heard of. But... who knows. I appreciate your kindness! :)
Commandos 2: Destination Paris might be worth checking out. From what I've read, it's a challenging mod but it also allows missions from the original games to be played.
I loved this genre back in the old days. Glad it came back. You reminded me I still only tried demos of Mimimi games, and never came back to playing full versions yet. Too many games to try. Excellent video, thanks for making it.
It is! It was released soon after this video. It's actually mentioned in the video, though at the time we only knew the codename for this project: Susskartoffel. :) Now it's out and it's indeed a great game!
Wow, that was the video I was looking for. Thank you very much, I didn't know Partisans 1941 or War Mongrels. I already bought it here and will start playing in the afternoon. I'm 33 years old, but as a child I played the Commandos franchise a lot. I'm happy that a new game in the franchise will be released. Thank you very much for the video
Glad you liked it! Since the video is a little old, you may want to search through the comments for some newer games that released since. My personal recommendations are Shadow Gambit and Sumerian Six. There's also a freshly released (like, two days ago!) sequel to War Mongrels, called 63 Days. Seems like we're all about the same age here, or at least that's what RUclips statistics tell me. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. :)
And there are another one game that fit in genre - Legacy 1917 During development, we are inspired by such classic indie blockbusters as Plague Tale: Innocence, Death’s Door and Commandos, but at the same time we create our own unique style and ideas: Hide in multilevel environments, use items to distract and confuse enemies, solve puzzles by analyzing one’s surroundings. Explore various locations and interact with NPCs who’s unique stories add to the immersive setting of the adventure. This grim post-war environment depicting real locations becomes a perfect platform to tell the story of the rivalling brothers and the people who were looking to rebuild their lives following a clash of epochs. Distinct visuals with original art for each level that were inspired by classical and contemporary artists enhance the immersive effect the adventure’s emotional storytelling provides. An original soundtrack inspired by classical music from the beginning of XXth century sends players off into the intense atmosphere of the revolution-torn country.
This guy spawned into this reality just to deliver this video to our species and then continued his travels through the multiverse never to be seen again.
Honestly, my first Commandos-like game are Commandos 2, i think i was around 4-6 years old, and since English is not my first language, i struggled very hard and only managed to finish Das Boot Silent Killers (literally the 2nd Mission in the game), and that all thanks to Spy's disguise ability. More than a decade passed, i suddenly remembered this game when searching for new games, and i replayed this game again and finally managed to finish every level when i was 17, i think you'll understand my joy when i finished a game that i basically can't play years ago. So, after Commandos 2, i actually tried earlier Commandos games and Desperados too and struggled to finish most of the levels, those games are hard af, but they're still good honestly... A year after those games, i came across Shadow Tactics, probably one of the best game in the genre, and it even has a unique setting (a Japanese Edo Period), the twist also hurts me btw. And not long after this, i also get the Aiko's choice DLC. It's centered more around Aiko and her past, and i really like the story before the teams incident in the main game. (Btw, nice to play as Mugen again). So since that days, i have high hopes for Mimimi. A year also passed, and i got Desperados 3. Personally, i'm having fun with it despite the pace is a bit slower than Shadow Tactics. It's also cool seeing the origins of John Cooper and the Gang too. Finally, just a year ago, i head Mimimi is also making a new RTS game called Shadow Gambit. The setting is... Well, pretty interesting (Supernatural Pirates), but seeing the gameplay is cool and it seems to have new cool additions too. Unfortunately, i also heard the news of Mimimi games shutting down weeks ago. I'm thankful for them to revive the genre and successfully on doing it, and i hope they're doing well from here on out
Btw, sorry for making an entire paragraph of my experience with RTS Stealth game xD Also, gameplay wise, i liked Desperados 3 more But Story wise, i liked Shadow Tactics more
@@MatsuSenpaii As a guy who felt compelled to make a whole RUclips video just to talk about this genre, I find your comment very relatable and cool! Thanks! I'm half way through Shadow Gambit now and I like it a lot. I wish Mimimi all the best, and I'm sure they'll be remembered as masters of stealth strategy.
@@MatsuSenpaii I think it's quite fast. Some characters have skills that allow them to move from point A to point B in an instant, so when you get a good flow, you can play REALLY fast.
Man i played commandos behind the enemy lines as a kid and i can assure you no fucking game ever came close to generating that adrenaline you got after you are infiltrated DEEP in the enemy base, working for that objective and unsure if you timed it all correctly or are about to get busted. That game was a fucking masterpiece. So was commandos 2
Loved Commandos as a kid. Still have my copies somewhere but they don't play well on new systems. Loved the Mimimi games Shadow Tactics and Desperados 3. Not too excited for their new magical cursed pirates RTT game though. I didn't know about any other upcoming games in this genre, so exciting to hear there could be a new Commandos.
How many people know the genius of placing the snake near the door of a one way roof, and camping with sam lying down with his 12 bullet gun? I think I have cleared entire maps with this. Shadow tactics fixed this exploit with sound range.
I love this genre. Commandos series got me hooked when I was younger. I waited for Commandos 2 like crazy. I was even part of a fan site for it. When it came out, it did not disappoint. I'd say besides Commandos 2, Desperados 1 and 3 have been incredible along with Shadow Tactics. I know the company recently released Shadow Gambit and I'm highly eager to give it a shot. Then we got Commandos Origin coming out soon. It's a good time to be a fan and better time if you haven't experienced this genre. You have some really nice titles to back and play to get your fix in.
I think you missed one title: Shadow Company - Left For Dead. It was released in 1999 and it was like Commandos but in full 3D. I HIGHLY recommed to play it, it is great!
To this day, i am still playing the hell out of Commandos 2 and Desperados 2, which are the best in their respective series. Commandos 1 was too linear, no choices, unlike Commandos 2. The game was more fun and with more replayability value, without the stress and the need to reload often. Desperados 2 it's not broken at all. The choice of views it's a blessing. There are times that you need to go all out wild west shootouts and the 3rd person view is marvelous.
Great video, only I preferred Desperados 3 over Shadow tactics. I felt the characters were more fun personality wise and a lot of quality of life features like speed up were a great addition.
dude you just need a better microphone and a bit of flare in your videos and you're all set to reach 100k on all videos, thanks, seriously, loved the content and the hours you put in
Commandos 2 has the best mechanics and maps although it's a little bit too easy compare to BEL or BTCD. But when i found out the Destination Paris mod, i was so satisfied. They made the mission so much harder and even recreate all the mission from BEL, BTCD and C3. Some of those missions are definitely the hardest i've ever played. So for me Commandos 2 Destiantion Paris is the best!
I’m a Chinese in my late 20s and I’ve never heard of mission 1937 until today, but I did some searching on Chinese social media and found that some gamers from older generations still remember this game
I have started Shadow Gambit today, and I strongly think that you had a lot of fun the last year ;) I enjoyed Desperados 3 and Shadow Tactics so much as you (especially the western one, since I fell totally in love with the first Desperados), and of course I feel very proud about the Commandos saga (the team who created it, Pyro Studios, were Spanish like me). Two days ago I tried the Steam demo of Commandos Origins and it looks quite cool, I must say (nothing new, but definitely better than Commandos 3 or Desperados 2).
Great video!! I started with commandos behind enemy lines, was a child barely knew what I was doing, and not spoke a single word in English. XD my genre changing moment was when I found XCOM. I know its not the same genre maybe but for me refuelled my love to this games.
When I played Commandos and Commandos 2, my English was so poor I was barely able to understand the objectives. I had to use a dictionary a couple of times for sure. So I think I feel what you mean, man. :D I am terrible at turn-based games, but X-COM is something I'd love to try...
I bought Korea: Forgotten Conflict with a magazine and it was a great game, spent many hours on it. It is a shame the game never had the same spot like Commandos series. It has vehicles that you can drive around and the difficulty was challenging. I never imagined it was Czech and I can't imagine how it could have get here on Brazil.
Thanks, man, good to hear it! I don't personally think it's similar to Commandos gameplay-wise, but I see why a lot of people are fans of both these games.
i played a game on dos in the 80's where a single comando moved from south to north on a few diff maps but included permadeath suply drops xp stealth kills and customiezable load outs . it was very simple relative to what your talking about but you should look for it
I am diehard fan of genre too, and not know about First Blood and Mission 1937. There is one more game in developement from Gameplay1st studio and there are some rumors about Destructive Creations makes two more games like their War Mongrels (Evil One and Codename Orange.2). And there is already mentioned The Parvificent Seven.
Amazing, very interesting rumors you have there! Do you know anything about the setting of those 2 Destructive Creations games? Still WWII? Also, if you can share any of your sources, I'd be endlessly grateful. But if they're a secret, that's fine, thanks anyway. ❤️
I posted links but YT deleted it. There are no clue that both DC games are strictly RTT, but they used same word to describe War Mongrels on first place (top down, action game). The Evil One is developing with Reddeer games and it is like Polish version of Sin City/Gotham and Codename Orange.2 is with Intermarum, and describe is top down, stealth, dark, action. And for Mimimi, they registered rights on a name Shadow Gambit a few days ago.
Maan my first Commandos experience was Beyond the Call of Duty. It was so awesome. I do agree that playing game 1 afterwards almost felt easy, and missions were shorter. Then, Men of Courage is frikking awesome. Commandos 3 was a bit of a downer in comparison, though Isome maps were neat. To me the jewels are Men of Courage and 2. The entire Commandos saga is awesome. Also, Desperados 1 is awesome too.I liked both Partisans and War Mongrels, though both like they were missing something in order to be truly great. And I have yet to play the mini expansion of Shadow Tactics, though the 1st one was great and I'm looking forward to it.
Great video! The first Desperados is one of my all time favorite games. I played Desperados 3 and I liked but didn't love it, and just got into Shadow Tactics -- it's fucking great. Def my favorite next to Wanted Dead or Alive.
Hiya! I'm really happy for everyone who found this video helpful. I'm grateful for all the game recommendations and all the feedback. Kinda sorry I didn't use a better mic, but wasn't really planning for 20,000 views. I was thinking more along the lines of 2,000 when I wrote this video. :D
Since some of you are getting (rightfully!) excited over a political comment I made and sometimes draw wild conclusions, let me clarify:
- Yes, I do not condone Russian aggression in Ukraine.
this is a very mature and open-minded stance, especially online. i couldnt agree more. you win the internet good sir
'Shadow Gambit' is mimimi's new game, you probably know about it by now, but if not, have a look.
so you people also think you are a chosen nation too? lol. all the losers think they are the chosen ones. everyone except the English.
Shadow Company: Left For Dead (1999)
A very good Commandos-style game with modern settings, but so hard to find. You should try.
Please make parts 2
After Commandos 2, we gamers were starved for nearly two decades. Mimimi has single-handedly revived the genre. The upcoming Shadow Gambit already looks to be a winner. The least we can do is to support them commercially and keep the genre alive.
Thank god for Mimimi tbh, that studio is great
Well said 👍
Rip
@@Tuck213my disappointment is immeasurable
@@theengine thanks for telling me?
Man am I glad that YT recced this video to me because wow I was utterly obsessed with Desperados 1 demo back in the day, to the point of learning about warez just so that I can dl and play the full game, because gaming was such an expensive hobby in early 2000s indonesia and i was a broke kid. Shadow tactics was such a wonderful revival, and Desperados 3's announcement filled me with sheer joy.
Thx! Glad you liked the video!
me too desperados 1 was the first game i get in my old potato pc and i replayed it many times i still remember most of the level and especially Sanchez fortress that game was so good
I still remember downloading the Commandos demo back in 98 on dial up. That 100mb took ages, but damn was it worth it.
I remenber playing the orignal commandos in my pentium 3 733mhz ... what a game man... "I sollesta I sollesta alarm alarm"
finally found a fellow admirer of RTT genre, Thank you for this video.
great video, thanks for taking the time to do the research and uploading it 👍
Robin Hood was my first game ever so its very dear to me. The medieval setting, the missions that made you feel like a hero, the sieges of the cities and castles made me fall in love with this genre. Not to mention I learned to speak English at an early age thanks to the dialogues between characters!
Yup, I learned English with those games too!
It is funny how commandos still looks good to this day.
2D art ages gracefully.
@@waskerton Also the attention to detail, it looks way better than desperados and the ones that came after (except for Blades of Shogun, which is freaking beautiful).
Thank you for the awesome video! I grew up with this genre. Hopefully there will be more games like this in the future.
Very good writing, passion and dedication! I was really surprised to find out it is the only video on you channel :)
@@jur4s767 Awww, thanks man! I'm really happy to hear it!
I was looking for a list like this and your video just saved me so much searching time, so thank you.
Thanks!
great video dude, didn't know there were so many Coomandos-like games, will look into Shadow tactics later
These type of Realtime Strategy Stealth games are one of the most underrated genre in gaming
I remember playing only commandos 2 back when i was a kid, not knowing what to do (except shooting enemies with guns and uses disguises, because i don't know english then). And now, i'm on my 20s and finished some of it
Commandos Behind Enemy Lines
Commandos 2
Commandos 3
Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun (and Aiko's Choice DLC)
Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive
Desperados 3
And Partisans 1941
I never thought i'd finish these games because i'm not too interested in Strategy type games before
But i've proved myself just how wrong i am
I'm not really into strategy games either. These feel to me more like a mix of puzzles and stealth. That's probably why I enjoy them so much.
@@waskerton true, these type of games actually have their own speciality, and makes it different than your average strategy games
i only watched the first 3 minutes and felt i need to comment already: this video so far is VERY competently made, either you are a natural or you put good thought into the structure, laying the groundwork with the 5 rules and presenting the father of the genre as an example is something the average new youtube dude wouldnt make, also your script if you used one is well written, you clearly get across what you want to tell the audience, your delivery could use some work, but also has kind of a rough charm, so i have one question: why so far is only one video on your channel? you already have over 130 subscribers, thats a massive amount for just one video, i hope you didnt give up or something because again - just the first 3 minutes made me write this comment, please make more content :)
Played these games a lot as a kid. I'm glad that youtube recommended me this video.
Now I'm expecting a comprehensive review of Commandos: Origins when it comes out ;)
No promises, but I would like that too. :)
@@eylam90 Yup, agreed on all fronts. Here's hoping that some dev out there is already working on this stuff!
@@waskerton I actually work as a game and level designer though not on this kind of games. Maybe in the future 😃
Still, from my perspective, the most crucial aspect of RTT is a level design which compliments the character rooster, its why games where you can select the team like Robin hood, feel too watered down to me, puzzle wise and very easy to abuse.
I really enjoyed watching and listening to your commentary! I am definitely going to check out Red Glare! I liked and subbed! Thanks again!
@@maximuscrypto2690 Glad you liked it! Cheers!
I played desperados versions in my childhood.. and now I am searching on games like it.. very useful video thanks bro..❤
Great video, thanks for the review and introduction to many games I didn't know existed
Glad you liked it!
Commandos: Origins has just received its first trailer ☺️
Finally! :)
Nice reviews Waskerton really appreciate you efforts. Keep it up.
Thanks!
So then i kinda have to start the mission over
I never knew of the Stargate: Timekeepers, so I thank you for showing it, I'm wishlisting that one right now
Nothing comes close to Commandos 2 and Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive. Absolute GOATS in the genre.
Cheers.
I'm so happy, thanks! :)
commandos: origins announced btw, it is such a crime this RTT genre so underutilized, i can't believe there is only 17 games since it appeared. :(
Have same feeling I dont know why there not a lot of this kind of games
And, I have the same chanting for both the genre, and this channel,
WE WANT MORE!!
A thoroughly enjoyable video from start to finish. Thanks for making it and i really hope you blow up on YT. Earned yourself a subscriber, cheers!

You missed one upcoming game - The Parvificent Seven.
Proven wrong in 2 hours. You, sir, are a winner! 😃
oh thank you
this really pleased us... 😃
Thank you for your list. With my brother we played Desperados III and we really enjoyed it.
BUY ... every single game :^)
To be honest back in the day, most of the games were impossible to get here, as long as the game didn't have an OFFICIAL Czech translation, getting your hands on a copy was quite the hard task so many people who know how to burn CDs ran these "small businesses" of selling games/music CDs and to this day I have TONS of these CDs ... well they are at my parent's house, but we all have 'em.
And when he heard from his friend that he knows a guy that knows a guy that's sellin' burned CDs of Commandos 3? My dad just have him the money and one week later we had that CD home, both ready the play the shit outta that game, but it was the aforementioned ... well, garbage.
At the time we knew like "Hi, yes, no, goodbye and please" and even movies used to change names between episodes so we thought they might've just changed the name completely to something else :^)
But I digress, the intro of the game if I remember was straight ripoff of the Commandos 2 intro, with the real life footage, but for some reason I remember it looked like those old FMV Command & Conquer type of shite. We both played the first mission and we for the love of god couldn't kill the first guard.
Every time we tried to knife him, our character would get stuck and just wouldn't follow him over to the next vagon.
The next thing I remember is my dad somewhat pissed off he payed for such bullshit :^)
Later that day we had an icecream since he said He'd rather die from his Diabetes problems than play any of that game.
It's 100% among the ton of other CDs so when I'll stop by and maybe remember, I'll try to pick it up and ran it on either virtual machine or I'm willing to bet one of our old PCs are still gonna be kept in the basement somewhere :^)
Off topic: We used to play Might and Magic 6, 7 and 8 as a whole family.
I fucking love my family for real
My family FOR SURE ain't perfect, but man these memories of playing all those games together or against each other...
Age of Empires 1 & 2, Starcraft, Quake and Quake 3 Arena, Contra, Battle City on NES (well, polish bootleg of famicom console called "Micro Genius IQ 502" also known as PEGASUS in Poland and in Russia it was called "Dendi" if I'm not mistaken)
I seriously consider my childhood perfect.
Always bruised up from playing outside through out the day and in the evening we used to play on PC or NES ... what else would child need innit?
Thanks a lot for sharing your memories here! Not just about Korea: Forgotten Conflict, but your early gaming experiences in general. :)
I genuinely appreciate you sharing all this beautiful memory with us, I enjoyed reading it.
Hermano, excelente recuerdo!
Me alegro al leerlo.
much needed video man, saved me weeks of research being a huge fan of this genre, btw talk about Commandos: Origins so we all can jump to interesting discussions about that.
Thank you very much for compiling as much titles as you know!
I just knew that Robin Hood game existed, I have to try despite of lackings here and there.
And yeah, next Mimimi game is definitely making me on the edge of my seat!
Yeah, all issues aside, Robin Hood was a lot of fun!
wow, your first upload and it's already well done. hoping for more content! fr example, why did 3rd person stealth games win out against commando-likes?
I am a Chinese gamer and I like COMMANDOS-LIKES games very much. But it was in your video that I heard about the game 1937 for the first time.
Aww man I have to go get the commando series again. Spent many happy hours playing them
Very pro video. I learned some stuff about a genre I love. Now your video is in my YT library
This is an excellent video! Thank you very much, as I've thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from all the information and commentary about each game. I've recently gotten into RTT, and I have since played:
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (beaten)
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun - Aiko's Choice (beaten)
Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive (beaten)
Helldorado (playing)
Desperados 3 (beaten)
Partisans 1941 (playing)
Commandos 2: HD Remaster (played for two levels, before deciding that it's not worth it)
This is an excellent and overlooked genre, at least for right now!
I'll be savouring every moment, then :)
It's ultimately up to you at the end of the day, but just give it some more finalising thought after finishing Shadow Gambit :D
What do you mean by "but my other hobbies have way more coverage online"?
I think you can bring something new to the table: yourself!
@@muhammadamirfaizal8588 Glad Commandos 2 did not disappoint you! :)
I meant that the other games I play are more popular, and there are lots more videos about them on RUclips. I would like to make videos about stuff people haven't heard of. But... who knows. I appreciate your kindness! :)
Commandos 2: Destination Paris might be worth checking out. From what I've read, it's a challenging mod but it also allows missions from the original games to be played.
It's shame all the RTT games fit on a 36 minute video. I love this underappreciated genre. Good video!
I feel you, man. I wish there were way more of them.
I played Desperados 3 and loved it. So i started searching same genre games and found this. I got what i want, thanks
I loved this genre back in the old days. Glad it came back. You reminded me I still only tried demos of Mimimi games, and never came back to playing full versions yet. Too many games to try.
Excellent video, thanks for making it.
I can't recommend those Mimimi games enough! Thanks for the kind words! :)
Lololol i said 'i'll watch some videogames of this video then I'll continue' but i eated it all with good laughs, nice video man
you should check "Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew", man it's so fun to play, getin' deep in the lore and fluid gameplay, I highly recommend 👍
I've been playing it from day one. :)
How exactly do u only have 300 subs even tho you make vids as good as this
Shadow Gambit - The cursed crew is another Banger in this genre
And there are another one game that fit in genre - Legacy 1917
During development, we are inspired by such classic indie blockbusters as Plague Tale: Innocence, Death’s Door and Commandos, but at the same time we create our own unique style and ideas:
Hide in multilevel environments, use items to distract and confuse enemies, solve puzzles by analyzing one’s surroundings.
I had an eye on this one for a while, not sure how Commandos it's gonna be, but maybe?
This guy spawned into this reality just to deliver this video to our species and then continued his travels through the multiverse never to be seen again.
@@dirkboercom Pretty much!
Commandos 2 was the pinnacle of gaming in my life. It was just the most immersive experience
I'm thankful for them to revive the genre and successfully on doing it, and i hope they're doing well from here on out
Btw, sorry for making an entire paragraph of my experience with RTS Stealth game xD
Also, gameplay wise, i liked Desperados 3 more
But Story wise, i liked Shadow Tactics more
@@MatsuSenpaii As a guy who felt compelled to make a whole RUclips video just to talk about this genre, I find your comment very relatable and cool! Thanks! I'm half way through Shadow Gambit now and I like it a lot. I wish Mimimi all the best, and I'm sure they'll be remembered as masters of stealth strategy.
@@waskerton btw, how's the pace of Shadow Gambit?
Is it a bit fast like Shadow Tactics
Or a bit slower like Desperados 3?
@@MatsuSenpaii I think it's quite fast. Some characters have skills that allow them to move from point A to point B in an instant, so when you get a good flow, you can play REALLY fast.
Man i played commandos behind the enemy lines as a kid and i can assure you no fucking game ever came close to generating that adrenaline you got after you are infiltrated DEEP in the enemy base, working for that objective and unsure if you timed it all correctly or are about to get busted. That game was a fucking masterpiece. So was commandos 2
totally agree
Nice video mate!
amazing content. One thing though , i feel commandos 2 is the best of these just bccz of the music
True, a memorable soundtrack!
i searched for exactly this informations. thanks for that video man!
My pleasure!
Mimimis new game Shadow Gambit is off the hook. Great video for an awesome genre.
Great video thanks, added a few more to my list =D
I think you missed one title: Shadow Company - Left For Dead. It was released in 1999 and it was like Commandos but in full 3D. I HIGHLY recommed to play it, it is great!
I second this. it's great and the 3D allows you to rotate to see different angles of approach
@@GeneticFreak Yeah, and when using binoculars or scopes it turns into FPP. Don't even start talking about available vehicles!:-)
Cool list, thanks!
Not surprised at all, D3 is a great game!
Very good reviews. Thank you from Siberia)
I love this genre. I wished more devs would make them. Have u played Satellite Rein?
No, but it was recommended to me. Maybe one day!
@@waskerton Then play it soon. It's a fun game.
Commandos 2 was so ahead of its time, it's my comfort game hahaaa😂
Best sequel of any game EVER
agree
Commandos 2, Blade of Shogun and Desperados 1 are the best games in the genre in my opinion, I still replay them every few years
dude you just need a better microphone and a bit of flare in your videos and you're all set to reach 100k on all videos, thanks, seriously, loved the content and the hours you put in
Commandos 2 has the best mechanics and maps although it's a little bit too easy compare to BEL or BTCD.
I have started Shadow Gambit today, and I strongly think that you had a lot of fun the last year ;)
I enjoyed Desperados 3 and Shadow Tactics so much as you (especially the western one, since I fell totally in love with the first Desperados), and of course I feel very proud about the Commandos saga (the team who created it, Pyro Studios, were Spanish like me).
Two days ago I tried the Steam demo of Commandos Origins and it looks quite cool, I must say (nothing new, but definitely better than Commandos 3 or Desperados 2).
@@LordMellington1668 You are absolutely right, I've had a ton of fun with Shadow Gambit! ;) I share your feelings on Commandos: Origins too.
what a blast i had in comandos 2. The mission with the high castle a big maze indeed. Trial and error are key words for this genre
Great video!! I started with commandos behind enemy lines, was a child barely knew what I was doing, and not spoke a single word in English. XD
my genre changing moment was when I found XCOM. I know its not the same genre maybe but for me refuelled my love to this games.
When I played Commandos and Commandos 2, my English was so poor I was barely able to understand the objectives. I had to use a dictionary a couple of times for sure. So I think I feel what you mean, man. :D
I am terrible at turn-based games, but X-COM is something I'd love to try...
No Star Trek: Away Team?
Yeah, my bad!
War Mongrel and Partisans 1941 are BOTH the best Commando like today.
Partisans and best?????? I loved all the commandos series and Desperados but come on, partisans is not even worth to play.
@@ahmettek315 the heroic defense mode is awesome
great video and i much appreciate your humor. Do you consider Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2 a commando like game?
Not a RTT but I feel that some old school Men Of War missions can itch your crave !
I love this kind of game... Commandos was a top5 ever for me. Just recently played Desperados 3, very good! Looking forward to more...
