Its almost too painful for me to play this game growing up my best friend and I were huge mgs fans and when this came out we were just flabbergasted by how amazing this game was. I think my friend even became a soldier because of these games. He saw some intense stuff he became a marine corps grunt and later he would constantly complain about physical symptoms related to PTSD but he would also say that he thought the injections given to him in the corps fucked up his brain. Later he eventually killed himself after years of suffering from a liver illness and mental problems. The last scene of the game where big boss salutes the bosses grave is now for me a chilling reminder of a person I lost along the way.

MG3 Snake Eater was one of the first games I played when I finally bought my PS2 back in 2004. It is a game that I hold very dearly to my heart. It is definitely the peak of the MG series. I remember completing the game 100% with all the obtainable items and animals, including the legendary tsuchinoko, and also beating the entire game without getting detected or killing anybody in order, as well as shooting all the secret toy frogs, to unlock some of the most unique camouflages, with the help of some written walkthroughs that I found on forums since back then there was no RUclips. Sometimes I would go to sleep with the sounds of the forest from the game. One of my all time favorite games, no doubt
I remember shooting all the frogs too, the ones in the last section during the motorcycle chase were the most difficult. It took so much effort, that when the rerelease Subsistence came out, I didn’t even bother trying to do it all again Lmao. I never did get to figure out how to catch the legendary Tsuchinoko tho….
I just replayed 3 and 1 in the last 2 months. I always remembered it was such a blast, but never thought that they would stand the passage of time this well. The gameplay, story, cinematic acting, is still better than a lot of modern games. What a masterpiece
The only problem I find in 3 is that you cant walk while crouching...that's it. And that could have been because of the PS2 limitations, like the game running at 30fps. Other than that, this is probably the perfect stealth game.

@@James-oj6ru Have to agree. I was so unbelievably hyped for MGSV, and it was a great game in a lot of ways. But it was just... missing some things, I think mostly as a result of being open world. Just didn't have the same charm. The cinematics and cutscenes were severely lacking, the story felt mostly disjointed. Not enough camp and goofiness, seemed like it took itself too seriously. MGS3 was just the absolute pinnacle of the series, and of gaming in general imo. Lightning in a bottle. But yeah, MGSV wasn't a bad game by any stretch. Just didn't fully feel like a Metal Gear Solid title.

Thank you so much for giving credit to the composer whose name I can’t spell. The healing tracks are fantastic and I listen to them all the time. It’s a shame that Kojima’s obsession with movies and Hollywood has created some other side effects such as changing out David Hayter. Still love the guy, but some people were done dirty by him.

I rave about it to this day and encourage every person I talk to to play through it and experience one of the most compelling and overall masterpieces of my lifetime.

This is amazing, it's a great insight on how mgs is much more than Hideo Kojima, and it is truly a good documentary. This video is very well made and I hope it reaches a lot more people.

This is exactly what matters. If anyone has to make a documentary of MGS and Death Stranding it really had to be you. Wow thank you. I really appreciate the compliment. I’m glad you enjoyed it. If Kojima ever saw my vids I would hope he’d like them lol. There may be something DS related later this year but we’ll see what the future holds 🤙👍
I dont know why I keep watching this and MSG2 again and again. Its just too goood. The Best. You have given MGS the Perfect Waxing It deserves. I really dont know what more to say. Just… .. .. exceptional :’)
I don't like MGS3 but I hope it grows on me in the future since the number of MGS games (or at least good ones) isn't going to grow with Kojima's departure from Konami. For context, I'd played MGS1 back in high school and loved it, then played MGS2: Substance a couple years later and while I had an easier time growing to like pre-cyborg Raiden than most people in 2001 (because I love Revengeance), MGS2 still it blew my mind, changing the way I view video games, especially Kojima's games. I'd never had the hardware to play MGS3 before so it had always sit in my mind as the holy grail of Metal Gear that's eluding me. Last week I started it on the HD Collection (Normal difficulty, 3rd person camera), beat it in a week (24 hours in-game time) and am glad it's not any longer (I'm used to long games like The Elder Scrolls series so 24 hours isn't that long for me). I was around the point where I reached The Fury that I really started to dislike the game. By that point, the ambiguous Soviet jungle had started to get old for me and the slow gameplay was overstaying its welcome. And that's so weird for me because I'm the type of guy that loves games with a nature setting, survivalist theme and slow gameplay. The controls baffled me with how much better they could have been designed. Yes, I have the perspective of being from the future after the advent of aiming with the right analogue stick while being able to walk with the left but the way it was implemented in MGS3 bothered me in a way that MGS2 never did. Having to hold down a button just to see the weapon that's in my hands while already holding another button to look in first person really strains my fingers after a while when both actions could easily be programmed to be toggled on/off. By the time I was up against the Fury, the guy who can randomly vanish and dash across the arena to show up behind you in an instant, the clunky controls really started to hold me back. I don't remember having such issues in MGS2. I really wanted the game to end and The Boss was such an annoying battle (especially for something I had been waiting for since the beginning of the game) that it ruined the emotional aspect for me to an extent. I was glad to kill the one character you're not supposed to want to kill. It's so disappointing to hear that Kojima really put everything into making the gameplay as enjoyable as possible while simplifying the story. I didn't like the gameplay very much. I found the story to be good but nothing too special; with was full of James Bond/spy movie cliches. Is there an objectively superior version of MGS3 that I should've played? I think the HD Collection with the 3rd person camera should be the best version but I don't know how good the 3DS remake is.
And another brilliant execution! MGS3 was a remarkable piece of art. And your analysis is just as remarkable. I remember getting Metal Gear on the NES for my birthday the year of came out in North America. I wanted Contra but my parents said all of the stores they looked for it were sold out at the time. I wasn't ungrateful, and I played it every chance I got. I never beat the game, but I had fun trying. I would have never imagined that it would become the monster of a franchise it is today. But even then, as a child, I knew there was something special about it. And at 40+ years old, I'm watching videos about every detail of it! Great breakdown, my dude. I'm loving this stuff. Bless up!
Being honest I may do a couple specific topic based vids for 3 like open world linearity and maybe one just exploring the subversive ness of its boss fights but I don’t see myself doing a retrospective type video. For these games I want to projects that are more unique and have an angle or tone that hasnt really been done. I actually have some other projects planned next but I will be silently working behind the drapery 😉 on the skeleton of a big MGSV project.
In regards to the graphics and engine development, I'm really interested in how they made the real-time reflection and distortion effects on the water. I'm assuming they do the usual old method of just copying and flipping the meshes, but also make them vanish when when you go under the water?
I will say that is impressive especially in the Pains Cave . Unfortunately in all the articles I found there wasn’t anything super in depth into those aspects of development. It’s really a shame that there isn’t more on this entry out there because I think it’s development was so key toward the feel of 4 and 5 going forward
@@JohnGatsbyThe3rd I should have made it clear but some games have reflections that just stay static even if you move around. It is weird that even ps4 games struggle to do these stuff. And look at games like horizon zero dawn and ghost of tsushima there is no underwater rendering
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed it. I wanted to do something different for MGS3 and hopefully this is a good informative treat for fans of the game and series
Glad you enjoyed it. I’m not sure when or if I’ll end up doing mgs4. I want to clean up my mgs1 vid and V is the next big mgs project I want to do but I don’t know when that will start. I have a few other projects I want to do before taking in another mgs game
21:04 fun fact: the if you codec call Major Zero, or Sigint (can't remember) they'll actually name the helicopter the "Hind" and then if you call them back, they'll say that it could be dangerous, and you should probably destroy it now so you don't have to deal with it later. That's the only way I discovered I could destroy it early
Awesome video again bro... I loved every second of this . You’re 100% right too... usually people say TPP is the apex of game play in the series I’ve always said the snake eater was. I understand the argument but in terms of innovation and just flat out fun factor snake eater takes the title. I must’ve used that cig spray 100000 times.
@@sssiyan312 that’s an awesome compliment. Ngl originally I was trying to make an MGS3 vid the same way as MGS2 but I had basically 20 pages worth of script and hadn’t even gotten past the HALO jump so I took all my behind the scenes research stuff and made The Document of that the game didn’t get. I think it turned out really good thoigh. Always appreciate to see when people enjoy it 🙏
I just started replaying this game again on original hardware. Just finished the virtuous mission last night and I’m starting snake eater right after I finish this video
I’m glad you guys enjoy it. It’s been really fun making content about games I’ve loved over the years and being able to give back to the mgs community in some way 🤙
Game Creation keeps expanding without limitation - just like the universe. (Hideo Kojima creator of metal gear) this manly man, man of a man knew what art was
I managed to play the mgs2 demo via a playstation magazine demo disc, and i was so hyped. Its also weird that the prototype for "guy savage" was an easter egg because I got it on my first play through. I must of saved the game in the prison cell for the day, and got it the next.
I'm waiting to watch this SS3 Snake Eater video until I have more time to pay attention, but in the meantime: first time watching Escape From New York tonight on dvd AND THIS IS SO SURREAL :'D
This is a contender for the best game of all time for me. Truly blown away when playing this as a teenager. My only gripe was the same issue you’ve voiced in your other videos. The boss’ just didn’t seem to have a purpose or enough of a back story to understand their motives. That all said, I remember truly loving the boss fights. I remember getting nervous knowing one was close as they were broken up pretty evenly in the game.
I apologize for being late fanatic video and lol good to know that even back then that MGS fans have always had “extreme” theories and enjoyed uncover trailers and Kojima always messing with them Kojima and his team are indeed legendary. Lol I remember when I was younger I always had fun with Guy Savage I always tried to make the demo last as long as possible. Lol I remember it tricked me the first time I played it thinking there was something wrong with the disc, since then every time I played 3 I would always save the game just play it. 3 will always have a special place in my heart. Wonderful job :-)
Is great knowing a little more about the teams creating the games. While I prefer an analysis like the one you did for mgs2, this type of content is also great and something that is sadly usually overlook when talking about games.
Yeah initially I was going to try and do one close to mgs2 style but there are already a lot of mgs3 retrospectives or hidden features in mgs3 vids but nobody had done anything about how the game was made and it’s the only mgs that didn’t have a making of doc. Being perfectly honest I do have something in the works for Death Stranding that will be closer to the insanity of my mgs2 vid lol
I never exactly understood why this was people's favorite since I didn't see many of the easter eggs and did almost no optional codec calls but after seeing this I completely understand. I'll probably replay MGS3 now and experiment more.
The only reason I bought an old Playstion 3 in 2018 was the Metal Gear Solid 4 and 3 titles. I never cared about video games at that point but was so enthralled with what they story and game looked like.
The only game on PS2 that had me hook up to the internet for some dlc content, still have those limited camo skins on one of my PS2 memory cards. This game still holds up as my favorite of all time

Bless up!
Fuck yeah. Metal Gear Solid and Hideo are endless sources of fascination. Looking forward to the rest of this series
@@PaperStarship Cool man. I'll be watching either way
You made a Document about me!?
You're too kind.
You're pretty good.
I was gonna say you're pretty good but I guess I kept you waiting huh.

Yes! More praise for Kojima's team, a band of absolute artisans, craftsmen and wizards!
Whats funny is even Sony's PS4 exclusives have awful reflections lol.they don't even make sense
@@tgdude6379 where lol
@@tgdude6379"man i sure love spreading misinformation on the internet!"
@@JohnGatsbyThe3rd I should have made it clear but some games have reflections that just stay static even if you move around. It is weird that even ps4 games struggle to do these stuff. And look at games like horizon zero dawn and ghost of tsushima there is no underwater rendering
Love this documentary. Amazing video
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed it. I wanted to do something different for MGS3 and hopefully this is a good informative treat for fans of the game and series
such a great video! thank you. love to see one about mgs4!
Glad you enjoyed it. I’m not sure when or if I’ll end up doing mgs4. I want to clean up my mgs1 vid and V is the next big mgs project I want to do but I don’t know when that will start. I have a few other projects I want to do before taking in another mgs game
@@PaperStarship i eat up all the vidoes about V i can find, so ill watch whatever. I was sent here from Out Heaven on facebook
Only 12 minutes in and can’t wait to finish this. Fantastic work again and I can’t wait for future videos!
one of the best videos i've seen on this game, great work man
I didn't want this to end, gj
@@sssiyan312 that’s an awesome compliment. Ngl originally I was trying to make an MGS3 vid the same way as MGS2 but I had basically 20 pages worth of script and hadn’t even gotten past the HALO jump so I took all my behind the scenes research stuff and made The Document of that the game didn’t get. I think it turned out really good thoigh. Always appreciate to see when people enjoy it 🙏
Good job on this. Mgs3 is my favorite among all mgs games.
Thank you this is one of my vids I’m most proud of and it was cool to give something to the MGS community that’s not out there already
Looking forward to seeing what you make of Mgs4.
Thank you for the video! Now I need to watch your MGS 2 video :)
You are in for a big thrill, get ur popcorn.
"Against This World" brings back some good memories. Sound therapy, indeed.
Incredible work man.
Thanks for the video! My favorite mgs game
i never realized what the stomach growling was until now, i always thought it was some weird frog
nice vid, I've only ever heard those popular quotes from kojima about mgs3
Ghost babel is Canon cause at the end of vr missions they say get some rest jack and it came out before mgs2
The staff deserve more credit than kojima.
Thanks for the making the video.
I just started replaying this game again on original hardware. Just finished the virtuous mission last night and I’m starting snake eater right after I finish this video
Amazing job!
Thanks for making this content
I’m glad you guys enjoy it. It’s been really fun making content about games I’ve loved over the years and being able to give back to the mgs community in some way 🤙
Great vid! More people need to see this! A masterpiece like the game
Ooo god damn here we go
This was great and appreciated
good comparison when mentioning apocalypses now
This was worth the wait!
Guess I’m glad I kept you waiting huh?
Game Creation keeps expanding without limitation - just like the universe. (Hideo Kojima creator of metal gear) this manly man, man of a man knew what art was
nice work homie!
You play MGS1 for the voice acting, and the story
MGS2 for the plot twist and the philosophy
And MGS3 for the gameplay and to see a young Big Boss
i play all three for the gameplay
I managed to play the mgs2 demo via a playstation magazine demo disc, and i was so hyped.
Its also weird that the prototype for "guy savage" was an easter egg because I got it on my first play through. I must of saved the game in the prison cell for the day, and got it the next.
I'm waiting to watch this SS3 Snake Eater video until I have more time to pay attention, but in the meantime: first time watching Escape From New York tonight on dvd AND THIS IS SO SURREAL :'D
I really find it cool that just off the E3 reveal trailer alone, people were already speculating that Solid Snake is a clone of Big Boss.
Amazing video buddy, really enjoyed it!
I love it thank you for this
My favorite Metal Gear game
still stands as one of the best games of all time IMO

Should be sleep, but will watch this
Is great knowing a little more about the teams creating the games.
Much love
Love your mgs content
Amazing work
Hands down my favourite of the series with 1 on ps1 a very close second.
I never exactly understood why this was people's favorite since I didn't see many of the easter eggs and did almost no optional codec calls but after seeing this I completely understand. I'll probably replay MGS3 now and experiment more.
I'm the same way I'm replaying now and it's like there's a codec for any and all contexts. Amazing
The only reason I bought an old Playstion 3 in 2018 was the Metal Gear Solid 4 and 3 titles. I never cared about video games at that point but was so enthralled with what they story and game looked like.
Sick video man!
The only game on PS2 that had me hook up to the internet for some dlc content, still have those limited camo skins on one of my PS2 memory cards. This game still holds up as my favorite of all time
