excellent video. Great watch
Many thanks!
Very relaxing and enjoyable to watch. Thank you!
Thank you for watching and for your kind words!
Great video and very informative. Been wrenching on bikes for 30+ yrs, and I still learn little tips and tricks from watching videos like this. Thanks for taking the time to video what you’re working on. Looking forward to the next video.
Thank you for much for your kind words and support! I will begin the reassembly tomorrow and probably have the video uploaded next weekend. Like you, I always enjoy watching how others wrench as I'm always learning something new in the process.
Is there a reassembly video? I can watch this "backwards" of course but thought there might be some tips that popped up along the way. Great video. Subscribed!
Thanks Thanks I didn’t shot a rebuild. Only a disassembly. Sorry about that.
I'm so happy I found your RUclips channel I'm just learning and I'm trying to work on a Buell tube frame 97 LOL I like how you're working on the Sportster and that you let us all know what size bolts and sockets it helps out a lot just learning especially a trick with the throttle cables😉
Awesome! Glad I could help you out! Thanks for watching and commenting!

That's where it starts brother. I was all brit bikes but got a sporty and that was just the start of things . I'm now on my 5 th Harley in 2 years and I'm hooked. If you enjoy the sporty then you will love a dyna
@@JennieLou-ww7sh I agree.
My '02 had that same riser speedo assembly. It was purchased right off the shelf.
Thanks for the info. Figured it must be stock. Pretty cool.
Awesome video ! Fun to watch and extremely helpful as i"m about to customize/chop my sportster as my winter/spring project 🙂 Can"t wait to see the next (re-assembly) video 😃👍🤘
Awesome! And thank you for your kind words. The bike has already been reassembled so I guess you can watch the video in reverse? Ha. If you need any help on reassembling just give me a shout via email. Thanks again for your support!
Thanks for the video , lots of good tips.
Thank you for watching and for your kind words!
Got it brother! Thanks for your help!

Great video!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
My fav channel
Wow. That’s a huge compliment!
16:56 I do believe that is stock, I bought my 97 XL 1200C from an older guy that kept it all stock, I have the factory service manual for the bike also. don’t quote me but I do think it’s standard on custom models for 1997 at least.
You are correct! Thanks for the info and for watching!
Yes they made that riser for the xl custom sportster i have a 2001 with it
Awesome! That’s good to know. Thanks for watching and for the info.
@@butlercustoms I believe from 96-03 xl custom sportster maybe longer? Thank you for your great informative video's 👍🍀✌😊
@@mattkornblum3469 that’s good to know. And thank you for the kind words!
awesome video as i am currently tearing down my 1988 sportster getting it ready to cut in half and weld on a hard tail to give it that old school chopper look who knows i might even take it on the highways when i'm done.i love these types of videos.and as always i'll be looking forward to watching your videos 👍
Thank you for those kind words and for taking the time to watch!
OH NO!...watched almost the whole video...went looking for part 2 were i can watch the reassembly and first start but NOOOO...not another video!
We didn’t record the reassembly. But it’s pretty much in reverse order of the disassembly.
The clutch cable CLAMP on the left side by the left foot peg are ALL called "P" clamps in any Auto-Truck/Coach trades
That’s good to know. Guess they are kinda shaped like a P. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Great stuff,
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Your awsome man keep up the good work. Where abouts you in tn btw?
Thank you for those kind words and for your support to our channel!
I'm in the big city of Hartsville, TN.
My 96 1200 has the same riser on it
That’s good to know. I guess they are a factory thing on some models and years.
Hello sir! I just took every bit of Magneti Marelli off of my bike. Then installed the Mikuni hsr 45 kit and the ultima ignition system I watched you install. 98 road king now I don’t know where to pull power from to the coil. I have lights and it cranks but the red light on the ignition stays on and won’t turn off when I shift it around in the nose cone. What do I do next? Directions please. Thank you!
I’d be happy to help. If you will email me at butlercustomsmotorcycleshop@gmail.com we can correspond more efficiently. But from your comment, I would verify that you are on TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke for the front cylinder. You can also look at the inspection hole by removing the plug to verify by the flywheel that you are in the correct revolution placement before setting your timing. Thanks for reaching out!
hey dude! great video so far, but can you tell how to remove the stud where the front muffler is attached? i wanna change to a bolt since Iam switching to a custom sprocket cover. But that sucker does not move a milimeter. I had two nuts on it bur stripped the outer one. It keeps making headaches
Thank you for your kind words. If I’m not mistaken, I believe that stud is welded.
damn! thought About that or glued in with crazy hard stuff since there is threads on the engine side. I even killed one nut by trying to take it off (I used two trying to get it out like on exhaust studs you know). I dont wanna hurt the hoses in that area otherwise inwould just use a heat gun and try that
Thanks man! I appreciate it
I’ve never had to remove one but it sounds like it’s a tough spot to remove it.
@@jonnyf9049 sorry I couldn’t be of more help. If you get it figured out let me know. Thanks.
When are you going to put the sportster back together?
It was reassembled the day after I shot this video. I didn’t record the reassembly.
What was the wire connected to that was underneath the hot side of the starter
If memory serves me correctly, that should be the charging wire from the rectifier that feeds back to the battery.
@@butlercustoms at 1:08 in the video?
I found it. 1:08:00. That green wire is the trigger wire for the starter button.

In Texas, if its not stolen, you just pay a few hundred for a bonded title and you are good to go. Or is it a better frame?
He already had the frame and it was in better condition. Thanks for the comment and for your support!
@@butlercustoms Good work if you can get it, beats trying to figure out a broken bike!
@@meserole65 I agree!
😎👍😎
THE VEN NUMBER ON THE FRAME HAS TO BE THE SAME AS THE ENGINE NUMBER THAT BIKE WILL BE IMPOUNDED. THE RIGHT THING TO DO IS FILE A LEAIN ON IT AND GET THE LEAGEL PAPER WORK THROUGH THE D.M.V
For this year bike the VIN numbers are for the frames only. The motor serial numbers are different than the VIN number. In the older Harleys the only title number was on the motor, but that all changed in 1981 with the federal 17 digit VIN numbers.
It’s the same as a car. If you have a title matching the frame you can put whatever motor you want in it.
👍👍👍
👍🏼
36:17 that’s a P-clip
Awesome! Glad to finally know the name of those things!
Great video and there is a lot of crap on these bikes
Amen to that! Ha. Thanks for watching.
