Superb video, we have been staying just outside of Penzance for the last two weeks and used this video as a guide for our walkabouts, thanks! We ate in the Admiral Benbow on our second night, ran out of fish, had to have pizza!!
One of my ancestors (Humphrey Roberts) was a barber in Chapel Street. In the mid 1800s he took on an apprentice (William Penhaligon) who later opened his own establishment in London and became Hairdresser and perfumist to Queen Victoria. It would be interesting to see a walk following the route of the parade commemorating Trafalger Day. Nice video ... thanks guys.
Thank you for the video. I left Pensans nearly 30 years ago and have never been back but have many happy memories of blowing in the Pensans Silver band ant the bandstand next to where you had you lunch. It is fantastic to see the place looking so vibrant now compared to the way it was when I left. Ah, a trip down memory lane for sure!
I was up in Southampton this afternoon and on the back of a Southampton City bus was an advert for the Lands End Coaster open topped bus. I came home, watched your video and there was the bus. It is amazing that the same bus is 'local' to both Southampton and Penzance when both places are 220 miles apart, who would have known! Thank you for the great videos . You do the most important thing when bimbling around towns and villages and that is to look up, it is always amazing what you can find and everyone else misses.
i was there yesterday and day before. I knew there is a lot of history there, in those buildings. Wanted to know about them. Was only able to know more about Egyptian house because went inside and spoke with the people working there. Wish I had found this video earlier. Very well made and explained. Back again in London. Hope I will visit there again one day, armed with all the knowledge I have now. 12:01 Yes I find historical building as fascinating as you do, especially Victorian and earlier. I find modern buildings a lot boring but realise they will be part of history and future generations will be fascinated how we lived and worked in those buildings.
Beautiful fascinating walk! Penzance is my favourite Cornish town😊 ~ so much history, such quirky architecture ( the Egyptian House...wow!) and so many picturesque places, but still refreshingly down to earth. I usually have two holiday breaks there a year, but that had to be put on hold....but at last I'm now booked for a stay very soon, so yippee! Love Alfred Wallace's cottage along New Street. Not long ago, it was up for sale, and it looks like it's been restored by the new owners.

Always ''look over your shoulder'' was another thing I was told...especially when there's a seagull sitting there waiting to steal your breakfast! Hi loved the vlog i watched it just before visiting penzance with my wife and son. Going home tomorrow but had a lovely week. Any way just subscribed to your channel and I'm going to watch more of your vlogs when I'm home.
A lovely tour of ‘Penzance’ nice memories, lots of interesting buildings with fabulous stories attached to them especially smuggling ones! plus Andrews little anecdotes, the ‘Egyptian House’ De-nial was one, very good, it’s the way he tells e’m, a sense of humour is a good thing, it makes life more amusing and enjoyable, don’t ever loose it Andrew, I miss my late husbands, it’s very dull now, luckily I inherited his wicked sense of humour but have no one to share it with, only my iPad palls who seem to enjoy it, so they tell me! I love the sound of the Seagulls around ‘Penzance’ it’s the Sound of the Seaside, just wonderful, thank you both for sharing your entertaining walks with the less energetic amongst us! 😊🤗👋
I was born and brought up in penzance and you missed the thatched cottage just as you leave the town centre as the oldest house in penzance. this is where I lived for a time with my grandparents. happy memories, beautiful area.
I love Penzance. I've been luckily enough to enjoy a pint of Rattler in the Admiral Benbow...it's such a quirky place to visit. The Egyptian house is beautiful too.

Fantastic video, Sarah and Andrew. Penzance is my favourite Cornish town. I read somewhere that the missing button on Davy's waistcoat was meant as a subtle criticism of Davy's wife, Jane, who was very much a socialite who, in the minds of the Victorians, neglected her 'wifely duties'. The shop where you say your nan worked, Sarah, didn't that used to be Steckfesters, the shop with the dalek in the window? I understand it was a sad victim of the Covid epidemic due to lack of custom last year. Many thanks for the video!

Glad you revisited Penzance, there is so much more you could have walked if you had wanted to d a bit longer walk. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. I love Penzance so much that I bought a flat there! You actually walked past it as you went down Bread Street just past the old brewery yard. Is it my imagination or do Penzance gulls have the best voices? Glad Andrew is a fan of some of the Penzance pubs, so many nice ones to choose from. BTW, bit of trivia, the blue building "The Abbey" was or is owned by the model Jean Shrimpton. Another bit of trivia as you walked up Parade Street you passed a rather ordinary looking granite building that houses a remarkable recording studio and huge audio collection, In Deep Music Archive, which includes @ 50,000 vinyl albums that is owned by Marty Willson-Piper former guitarist of The Church.
Thanks for the film! I have missed going to Penzance the past couple of years, and it was brilliant to see most of the places I usually visit. In 2018 and 2019 I did painting workshops with Glyn Macey, on Chapel St. We painted the view of St. Michael's Mount from Battery rocks, and the Abbey slip.
A walk atound Penzance, absolutely brilliant. Had to make this comment about Morab Gardens. It was after you hsd your lunch and about to leave the gardens and the beautiful hydrangeas that I exclaimed out loud and had to show my father, of whom is 92yrs old. The lady and gent couple that went ahead of you looked exactly like my father and mother walking hand in hand. It obviously wasnt them as my mum passed 4yrs ago this September, but when I showed it to dad, he also gasped in amazement as he knew that was the exact way they would have been!!!! So even though the filming of Penzance is excellent, that small moment made it so eerily warming for both my father and myself. A weird way of saying thank you,but THANK YOU SO MUCH 💛❤️💛🙏
I went to Penzance two years ago based on your winter walk 🚶♂️ three years ago. I had a lovely visit and even braved the icy waters of the Jubilee Pool! So nice to virtually visit via your video!

We had a pint in the Admiral Benbow a few years back the interior is amazing, hope it`s still open .Your tour around Chapel street showing all the lovely architecture was perfect. A fantastic walk thank you guys,,,,,,,,Brian&Jane.
That was lovely! Even more excited to be there in September! ☺️☺️☺️☺️ love the architecture too! Unlike modern buildings that are all the same, our Ancestors had more vision x
My bucket list keeps growing, watching you! The good news is that things are all in one area. Is there is a part of Cornwall that is just ho hum? I wonder if Cornwall even knows what fantastic ambassadors they have in you? Great video!
God, the amount of times I have been to Penzance but I still love going there. I have been to Marketplace in the intro many times over the years and it is still a nice place to do shopping but has kinda dwindled over time due to many good shops closing in the local area. Oh well, still love going here anyway so, Great vlog Sarah and Andrew. 🦔👍
I agree, I think it has been a victim of the poor decision to allow the development of Eastern Green with national chains taking people out of town and with free parking. Real shame! I remember it being a special place to go shopping when I was little. I remember going to the Wimpy and visiting a shop called Knees or Kneels, had a bit of everything including toys! Loved it! Sarah :)
Brought back lovely childhood memories when we use to arrive at Penzance by train for our holidays. I have a memory of the Egyptian house once being a great maritime museum then in later years a national trust shop, I could be wrong as this was in the 70’s. Long time ago! Been in The Admiral Benbow on many occasions, and go in there each time I visit Penzance. Thanks for a very enjoyable video. Love Penzance, wish I could live there 😍😍
I never knew there was so much in it! I have seen the Egyptian House though (whilst driving through). There was a period when 'Egyptian Style was considered 'cool', there is a beautiful Egyptian dining room in Goodwood House, near Chichester. Yo can see it on their website.
Lovely city. The Egyptian building is interesting. Enjoyed the history lessons. Love the smuggler spirit that lives on in Penzance. Finally, Andrew's breakfast made me want to jump off my Weight Watcher's diet.👟☕🍩
Some might be interested to learn that to the right of the Humphry Davy statue there used to be a mens' public toilet. There was a flight of stairs down to a very grand underground area. I seem to recall the cisterns were glass fronted and might once have had fish in them. (could be wrong about this, but it was a thing back in the day).
I just saw this stunning house but have to go back to pad out my Penzance video but was rly drawn to this building is it open to walk in? We were there before 9 am so didn’t get to check.
I was lucky, I only had to take it once…by the skin of my teeth. A dear friend of mine, sadly no longer causing havoc, knocked an old ladies shopping all down the road on one of her tests. I always imagined tins rolling and bumping all down Market Jew St.
You mentioned the Brontë sisters. Here’s a fun fact : Their name was originally spelt ‘Brunty’ but their father , Patrick, changed the spelling in honour of Lord Nelson when he was created Duke of Brontë by one of the kings of Italy. His decendant, Alex ,Viscount Bridport still retains that title. Sadly for him , it no longer comes with the vast wealth that Nelson earned from it.
You always make a town walk so fascinating and give such great history 👌. I can't wait to visit again now and take it all in 😁🙏. Hearing about the smuggling is so interesting and I didn't realise that Alfred Wallis had lived in that gorgeous town cottage 🏠. It's such a delight to see you pop up in my feed now, as I know that I'm always going to learn something new about our lovely county 🙌. Still wading may way through all your other videos and loving every minute...you guys are brilliant 👏😊😘
Given that november marks the golden anniversary of its release, how about a video taking in the locations for the controversial film 'Straw Dogs'? You need not allude to the film itself too much - which is not the stuff of polite conversation - but St Buryan and Morvah are charming locations and many of the villagers have anecdotes about Cornwall's most notorious foray into cinema.
I’ve had many holidays staying in Chapel Street, Penzance. Three years ago this week we were staying in Newlyn. Fabulous part of the Cornish Coast. Marazion, Penzance, Newlyn, Mousehole and Lamorna. All absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed the video but the ‘jokes’ were a bit lame. 🙄
All locals in penzance No the building had a lot todo with now dead Alister Crowley how loved out near zennor and had place on the back roads to Penzance to stives. The building has spooky past

A fantastic walk thank you guys,,,,,,,,Brian&Jane.
We were out filming way before the pubs were open but i think there were some beer barrels outside so hopefully that's a good sign! Sarah :)
what a fab video.
Realy enjoyed the walk around Penzance ❤
I'll be in town next week. Thank you for this marvelous walk-about it's quite helpful!
Brilliant👍😊
That was lovely! Even more excited to be there in September! ☺️☺️☺️☺️ love the architecture too! Unlike modern buildings that are all the same, our Ancestors had more vision x
Totally agree! And less regulation! Sarah :)
Fantastic video
My bucket list keeps growing, watching you! The good news is that things are all in one area. Is there is a part of Cornwall that is just ho hum? I wonder if Cornwall even knows what fantastic ambassadors they have in you? Great video!
God, the amount of times I have been to Penzance but I still love going there. I have been to Marketplace in the intro many times over the years and it is still a nice place to do shopping but has kinda dwindled over time due to many good shops closing in the local area. Oh well, still love going here anyway so, Great vlog Sarah and Andrew. 🦔👍
Beautiful Penzance lovely gardens and buildings swimming pool nice place to do shopping thank you enjoyed the video Sarah Andrew 😀👏👏👏👏
Loved it! Sarah :)
lovely couple for a lovely video x
It's FABULOUS lol!
My home! Born and bred. ❤
Love Penzance, wish I could live there 😍😍
You're welcome! Sarah :)
Where my ancestors came from! 😊
I never knew there was so much in it!
I have seen the Egyptian House though (whilst driving through).
There was a period when 'Egyptian Style was considered 'cool', there is a beautiful Egyptian dining room in Goodwood House, near Chichester. Yo can see it on their website.
Yes, several times of popularity including Lord Canarvon and the Tutankhamun tomb! 100 years ago! Sarah :)
Lovely city. The Egyptian building is interesting. Enjoyed the history lessons. Love the smuggler spirit that lives on in Penzance. Finally, Andrew's breakfast made me want to jump off my Weight Watcher's diet.👟☕🍩
Oh, he loves his saffron buns!! It was rather large, I thought! Sarah :)
New street walk up the top and there is a lovely restaurant mitch star but well worth every penny
The Shrimp used to own Abbey Hotel, and Bunny and Ziggy were regulars! Oh the 60's.
I just saw this stunning house but have to go back to pad out my Penzance video but was rly drawn to this building is it open to walk in? We were there before 9 am so didn’t get to check.
Warstow Bury Hill Fort is worth a look
Is The End of the World bookshop still in Market Jew Street?
So much history, I had no idea.
Fab video as usual
Yes. It is still there.
And long may it remain. 🙂
Penzance, Where I was born, and took my driving test (several times) 😂
A bit of a nightmare to take your test in Penzance!! Sarah :)
I love you interesting fact! It has often crossed my mind where the name came from! Sarah :)
That's part of the appeal of doing this channel - we are constantly learning about our lovely County and understanding where we belong! Sarah :)
Andrew you have something in common with Alfred Wallis he had a older wife to love the video. Stewart
Penzance is my favourite town , apart from Hayle , right on
Admiral Bendbow.whoops Benbow. Thanks Andrew.im not "in denial" when I say " you are a cool, nice, fun loving husband. Have fun !
Sarah, I thought St.Just was the most westerly town?
Can you go to the Mousehole in Cornwall
Given that november marks the golden anniversary of its release, how about a video taking in the locations for the controversial film 'Straw Dogs'? You need not allude to the film itself too much - which is not the stuff of polite conversation - but St Buryan and Morvah are charming locations and many of the villagers have anecdotes about Cornwall's most notorious foray into cinema.
I think that has been mentioned before and we thought about it but not watched the film. Need a copy really! Sarah :)
Was there a map of your walk ?
I’ve had many holidays staying in Chapel Street, Penzance. Three years ago this week we were staying in Newlyn. Fabulous part of the Cornish Coast. Marazion, Penzance, Newlyn, Mousehole and Lamorna. All absolutely beautiful.
I enjoyed the video but the ‘jokes’ were a bit lame. 🙄
