Thanks Steve. I used to live on St Martin's Isles of Scilly and had to leave when I was 24in 1987 . I was going to marry a girl who lived on the island but I couldn't find anywhere to make a living and all the properties were sold to rich people from London. Being on Scillonian money is being on your arse in those days . Unless you can have an income from renting to tourists. The cheapest property in 1985 was about £85000 and that was with a short 20 year lease. Nobody owns a house on St Martin's there all Charlie / William's now . I didn't stay with my fiancee as she needed to help her father there .Now she lives near Portsmouth so I hear . I moved to South Wales near the sea and met a Welsh lady . I miss the islands and now I'm 60 and retired I will make it a point next year to take a trip . Thanks for bringing back memories 👍 Anyway i sailed on Scillonian 3 a month after she started service. She was made 17th May 1977 and i was only 14 at the time.
Did you know Mr & Mrs Perry, they ran a B&B but also had a holiday let. Lovely old couple. Islanders, well Mrs Perry was, born facing Porthcressa beach in a little cottage
You have my sympathies I had friends on St Marys they built their own place at the beginning of the 60's I was told it was worth £1.4 m but prices dropped when the helicopter service ended in 2010, I have to agree Charlie/Willy are very poor landlords you will know the details I imagine, from memory only Hugh Town is freehold.
I'm a ferry fanatic. Can't imagine flying somewhere when there is a boat ride available. To me, the boat ride is part of the destination. Being retired from the U S Coast Guard may have something to do with it.
I went on this trip two days ago. I saw an advert in a farmers field when travelling from St. Erth to St. Ives. I had been planning to take a boat trip to Seal Island in St. Ives for £25 per head. When I saw that I could get a day trip to the Scilly Isles - for not much more - I jumped at the chance (£35 only certain days though). I also discovered that you can hire bikes at St. Mary's Bike hire for only £11 per 1/2 day - I was only there for 3 hours so perfect. I rented a bike and cycled around the whole island. It was bliss. I watched this video before taking the trip so I knew exactly what to expect. Thanks, much appreciated.
Hello. I sailed to Scilly in 1968. The weather was ghastly and I was seasick for the only time in my life. I’ve just watched your delightful video, Steve. A lovely calm sea. But do you know, I started to feel seasick again after over 50 years!! Can’t believe it!
I am 83 went to the isles of scilly , when I was in my 👂 early twenties , oh that boat rolled up and down Side to side all at the same time , I had a sheepskin coat on , it was soaking in seawater , I was very sick , I ending up living there in a cottage on the slipway for a whole summer , I looked so healthy when I went home, interested to see this film , thank you .
About 18 years ago I booked a surprise overnight stay in the Star Castle Hotel for my family. We were staying in Porthleven out of season, maybe February. In those days there was a helicopter service from Penzance. The flight along the Cornish coast was breathtaking. I will never forget the incredible silence once the helicopter took off to return, leaving us on the island. It is an incredibly beautiful place and almost forgotten. Sadly there is a lack of income as so many homes are holiday cottages, empty much of the time I think. It is magical there. Go, and spend your money generously. Thanks Steve for raising the island's profile.
Sailed on the Scillonian II for a day trip back in 1962, (I was only 10!). Managed to squeeze in a trip to Tresco and the fabulous gardens. In 1985 I (now married!) returned for a week's holiday based in accommodation at the famous Kavorna Bakery, Hugh Town, St. Mary's. This time sailing, as you did, Steve, on Scillonian III which was running all those years ago. Fascinating trips to several of the off Islands during the week, including dipping in a very cold May sea off St Martin's. It seems that Vic's tours round St. Mary's on the vintage bus may no longer be there, because otherwise you would have been on it! Great video Steve, with a bit of nostalgia for us. Plenty more for you to discover on your next visit!
My wife and I had a wonderful holiday on Scilly 50+ years ago - it's quite amazing how little it has changed. In a day you could only see St Mary's, but you packed a lot in. The other islands are equally memorable. It is paradise in good weather, but a trip on Scillonian in a gale or on a heavy sea would also leave a lifelong memory. Brilliant piece, many thanks.
Rather earlier, when I was down that way, 'Scillonian' plied her trade for 25s. a head, for what could be a pretty rough 5 hr voyage. For the well heeled, the trip by air taking 20 minutes, cost 2 guineas!
As a schoolboy, and later a young adult, flying from Bermuda to UK on BOAC we often made our landfall over the Isles of Scilly. Thanks for giving me a close up view.
Great to see this old ship still going strong! When I was a toddler, my parents took me on a vacation to the Scillies. The horn of the ship must have made an impression on me, because back home I would occasionally let out a loud hoooonk and my dad would answer with "Scillonian three!".
Next time you go, check out Harold Wilson’s grave in Old Town’s church. Also Horatio Nelson is buried there. You didn’t know that did you, he was the local policeman in the mid 1800’s. Lol
St. Mary was perhaps the most beautiful little island I've seen in a video and I really enjoyed what you were able to show us. I hope you can make a longer trip to the island soon. The ferry was terrific too. Thanks for sharing this adventure with us.
All the islands are unique and have their own atmosphere. St Mary’s quintessential English. Bryher, rugged and rough, Tresco is beguiling and lush, St Martin’s with its silver white sands very tropical. St Agnes is almost Cornish and has Gugh attached at low tide. The islands are very bewitching and not forgetting the Sunset over Sampson. Magical
Yes ! you made it to the Isles of Scilly!! This is my summer paradise and I have been comming here for the last 10 years. It is such a special place. You have to come back for a proper holiday with Alicja and explore all the other islands in this archipelago. Great video as always👍 Take care🌸
Steve I have been following Alecia and you for the past year or so, and it is always a delight that you welcome everyone to pal with you both, well done, its always a treat!
Another excellent and highly enjoyable video, and lets face it, a day trip to St. Mary's has to be better than 14 hours on a sodding train from Aberdeen to Penzance 😎🤣❤
Hi Aussie fan here. Please return to the Scilly soon. I discovered some time ago that my wife's ancestors lived there in St Mary's in the 1860's. Also I really enjoy your work particularly the train and ferry trips.
Went camping there with school four times 71-76, sailed on Scillonian 2, it could get very rough. It was some of the best days of my life, was absolutely beautiful place and would love to go back some day. We had a long coach trip from Darlington but was worth it.
This was a real surprise trip as I thought the Scilly Isles were almost barren and they are not and you were so fortunate with the weather. Wonderful viewing as always, Thanks, Steve!
The islands are warmed by the Gulf Stream so they have a sub-tropical climate, with snow and frost almost unknown, except of course they are exposed to the Atlantic gales in winter.
Oh how we love the Isles of Scilly! It’s a different world. You feel very safe and very relaxed. The islanders are super friendly. So good to see the The familiar spots we love on your channel. Do return- take Alicia and stay. Watching the ferry depart is a joy when you know you are remaining on the islands. Magnificent sunsets there. The “off islands’” are so special…… and we have just decided where to spend our upcoming special anniversary. The ❤s.
During the transition from sail to steam, in the 19th Century, it was mail packets that made early steamships viable. Of course this is younger (built 1977) but still a wonderful old ship. I’ve always fancied a trip to the Scilly Isles. I reckon they would suit me down to the ground. Ship fanatics can get some more information about Scillonian III at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMV_Scillonian_III Thanks for taking us there Steve. It’s always a pleasure to travel with you and you are so polite with people.
Thanks for this presentation Steve, I live in Heamoor just outside Penzance and when my neighbour who used to work for the scillonian we got free tickets for the crossing for my childrens birthday, After a word with the pursar they spent the whole trip on the bridge taking turns in the captains chair, such a great experience and lovely people
What lovely day trip. Wife and I discussed a first holiday on Scillies for ages. I just think your video has wetted our appetite. Such enjoyable video to watch. Well done putting your videos together.
Loved this one. We have done this trip a couple of times as my wife's sister live in St Just. Thanks for uploading this one, it brings back some great memories.
We have visited about Scilly about ten times in the last 15 years, had a few week long holidays and day trips, we cant get enough of the place. We did a daytrip earlier this year, its simply fabulous.
Steve, thank you for this episode! Very well conceived, narrated, cut and mixed and with some laid back music in places. It is an art to mould your message into an agreable form. You seem to master it, letting us thoroughly enjoy the content without distractions!
Another great video adventure, Steve! 👍 Really enjoyed your mini-tour of St. Mary's. Thanks for providing the first "on the ground" look I've ever had of any part of Scilly. The "please use headphones" announcement as the ferry was departing from Penzance should be universal and strictly enforced on all forms of public transport, worldwide.
Penzance is one of our favourite place in Cornwall, although we never been to the Scillies. After watching the video we've made up our mind to go next year. Thanks for another great video Steve.
That was an absolutely great and relaxing day trip, and I see what you mean, you could be there for days with those views and gorgeous houses and streets. Love it
Omg what a trip down memory lane! Religiously went to the Scilly Isles on holiday as a kid. Still remember Scillonian II which was much less stable in rough weatherand thinking how amazing Scillonian III was by contrast. I was around 10 when I first travelled on the ship - now I'm 55. Very good effort and well done for maintaining this ship for so long. Real beauty. 🛳️👏
Brilliant Steve! What a fine portrayal of your visit, with all the small but vital details as usual. Excellent work. Really makes me think, ok, so when am I going?! Well done Sir 💥
Another lovely video Steve! I do agree with you, the current ferry is more attractive than the new one which is too modern looking. Old things have a soul and new ones sometimes never get old enough to earn one!
Not sure if already mentioned but the lower deck used to have sleeping accommodation , bunk beds, rather than individual seats and I can't remember ever seeing another soul down bar my brother. The noise never bothered us as we used to travel on a regular basis between Weymouth and Guernsey on the old BR ferries and would go to sleep to the engine lullaby. Can't believe she's going !!!
What a wonderful trip! I have the Cornwall area on my bucket list now (after visiting the cousins in Ayr) and finishing watching Doc Martin this past May. It is such a cool place with so much to see, but these little out of the way places are even better. thanks for sharing as always! 😀
I went here on a school trip for 5 days, we camped on st.marys in the middle of summer, absolutely beautiful ❤️ best holiday ever, the sea is clear blue and white sand, even tho we went in the summer it never seemed too busy because there loads of roaming to do, loads of walking mind, we explored all of the islands... breathtaking. I want to talk my kids one day 😁
Another lovely vid, Steve. Thank you as always. Scillonian III reminds me of The Earl of Zetland, the ship that used to ply between the different islands of Shetland, carrying passengers and goods (not containerised, though) for the islands. I managed one trip on the Earl in the early 1970s. I've only managed one trip to the Isles of Scilly and that was by helicopter to visit the island of Tresco. Amazingly beautiful place altogether. Oh, and I recommend you visit St Michael's Mount - a fascinating place.
Ah loved that! It's now firmly on my to do list - I've been to Marazion and St Michaels Mount, and the Isles of Scilly have long been on my radar. It made me proud to be English!
Brilliant video as ever, Steve. I was corrected by a local once and told we’d sailed across the Celtic Sea, not the Atlantic. To be honest, who cares: it’s a great trip whichever. The other thing that might bring you back and use the skybus is that you can leave from Lands End Airport (Yes it really exists! And is the skybus hub). Add to which those planes are around 40 years old now. Magical trip 😁
Mate that was throughly enjoyable! The Isles of Scilly look like a tropical paradise, hard to imagine this is in the British Isles! The Scillonian IV will have a new rival ferry service. Harland and Wolf (the Belfast ship maker) is actually going to build and run a ferry service to Isles of Scilly!
Cancelled. The new ferry was moored in Newlyn but in early August when H&W went with the begging bowl to the new government and were turned down, they pulled the service without a single sailing.
How beautiful is that place!? I've never managed to get further than Bristol in that direction, but with the train journey the other day and now the boat to the Scillies I think I know where I'm going next spring! 😁❤️
The Isles of Scilly are on my travel wish list and thanks to you, I think I’ll do a day trip via the boat as 4 hours there will be perfect. It looks lovely
What an amazing little trip for a day out! I too thought the air fare was slightly too much! spotted you recently in Wales as I passed on a train, would have loved a chat, maybe next time when I'm not on a train! (looking forward to that video...)
Steve does it again. Great journey & look forward to you returning there for a few days. There’s quite a bit to see with the Neolithic monuments as well. I always look forward to Saturday with Steve’s journeys.
Had many wonderful holidays on the islands, you were passing Harold place at 16.45 on the left, we stayed next door with Ruth Simms. There used to be a saying, if you visit the islands for a day you will never return but if you stayed for a holiday you will never leave. My parents visited for the first time in1965 and they came back every year until 2010. Excellent video makes me want to visit once again.
That was great! Thanks so much. Have never been there tho it looks fascinating. Nice meeting George and Sam. The footage of you sailing away was a bonus. Hope you can both take up their invitation. 😊
All those islands have their own character, Steve - I've stayed in a self-contained cottage, B&B and a hotel in the IoS (minimum 7 nights) and walked all the inhabited islands. Surely one of the highlights of Britain! Great to see you give it the once over - The only time that I've booked to fly, I ended up on The Scillonian due to stormy conditions - scary emergency landing into Newquay, but keep returning to IoS
Stunning video, I love the plant life in the Scillies, makes it feel special. Tresco is amazing too. Would love to see the boat trip around the islands if you do it.
Great video showing the Scillonian and you had a fantastic crossing! If you feel St Mary's is like another world you need to visit the off islands, they're a whole other world. Stay on an off island, (if you can find accommodation), it'll feel really special with your other half.
A delightful video which brings back happy memories of our own trips on the Scillonian to the Isles of Scilly. You must return for a longer time and the opportunity to explore the whole of St Mary’s and the off islands. The Scilly Carts are a fun way to get around. 👏👏👍😎
This was fantastic, as always, and is absolutely one of my top five Steve Marsh videos. It was spectacular. Palm trees and seal watching tours. How can it get any better. Is that island mostly a tourist destination or does it have another industry? Fishing or something? So beautiful and clean, very quiet. Excellent Steve, really excellent. 🤩
Aww thanks so much! It was a fun video to make too, but I was just a bit short on time and energy! Good question, despite my flying visit, I have little knowledge of their main industries at all, but one thing I did notice - everyone I met who lives there certainly seem to enjoy it!
The main industry used to be the export of flowers, thanks to the very mild climate. Unfortunately the increasing imports of hothouse-grown flowers trucked in from Europe has badly damaged that trade.
Harold Wilson retired to Hugh Town, a bungalow on the right as you walked up the hill out of town. It was hilarious to see his big white Y fronts drying on the line and him sat in the garden smoking his pipe. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
High point of this video was definitely the, "If watching videos or playing music please wear headphones" announcement before the boat set off! We need much more of that type of common sense on ALL transport (and everywhere else) in the UK!
Dearest Steve, i love watching you and the places you go., i have watched so many, from Norway, Iceland and every thing in between but this little Island is soo peaceful just loved it, please go back again if possible. kindest regards Queensland Australia.
People are probably on time for fear of being left. But, during the walkabout I can't see where that would be so terrible. What a gorgeous place to visit and stay a couple of days. I would take the ferry both ways because I like boats as a mode of transportation. Nice video, I really liked this one.
at 6:31, I come from the moors just over the hill on the horizon. My family name is from the area but we are from a hamlet by the name of Georgia. Wonderful view that lifts my heart.
Good Morning, Steve. This was very nice. My favorite city in England is Penzance so I truly enjoyed this , and I thank you for including afew photos of Penzance, too. St. Mary's is enchanting and I would live there in a heartbeat. What a great morning. Merry Ann from Minnesota
Oh no Steve, we're going to have to stop following you after you dissed our favorite Cornish Cyder!!🐍🐍🐍 (kidding) Cornwall is our favorite place in England, climbed to the top of St Michael's Mount twice and staying in St Ives for the 4th time next year! I have family in Plymouth so we've stayed there several times. The islands look so peaceful, thanks for taking us along as we've never been down that way.
For years we got the S61 helicopter to and from the Scilly Isles and I never fancied the Scillonian seeing it get thrashed around in the swell below us!
@@steve-marsh No it stopped running a few years ago but I think there is a more modern smaller helicopter running now. The S61 was great fun and as you know the passenger version of the Sea King.
No such place as the Scilly Isles. You can say the Isles of Scilly or just plain Scilly but never, NEVER, the Scilly Isles. Say it to a Scillonian and they'll tie you to the deck and have you sail in a force 7 or 8 for a week.
Thanks Steve. I used to live on St Martin's Isles of Scilly and had to leave when I was 24in 1987 . Still remember Scillonian II which was much less stable in rough weatherand thinking how amazing Scillonian III was by contrast. I was around 10 when I first travelled on the ship - now I'm 55. Very good effort and well done for maintaining this ship for so long. Real beauty. 🛳️👏
the II was rough and ready indeed
Looks like a really nice place to live and or retire!!
Brilliant Steve!
What a fine portrayal of your visit, with all the small but vital details as usual.
Excellent work.
Really makes me think, ok, so when am I going?!
Well done Sir 💥
Well worth a visit, especially with a bit more time than me to explore the other islands as well!
I love your videos, Steve. 2:07 Please pay attention to the deliberate kem trayls in the sky. Also at 4:27. It is essential we wake up en masse.
Another lovely video Steve! I do agree with you, the current ferry is more attractive than the new one which is too modern looking. Old things have a soul and new ones sometimes never get old enough to earn one!
Couldn't agree more!
I have really, enjoyed the walk around this beautiful, peaceful island. I enjoyed the old ferry boat. I will be heading to the main deck cafe if I go.
My favourite RUclipsr doing another great vlog. Thank you so much Steve and I look forward to seeing your next adventure ❤
Richard thanks again so much!
Brilliant Steve ❤
Thanks for taking us to places off the beaten path. This looks incredible - well done on the video.
Thanks so much for coming along!
Thanks so much for that, Steve. The Scillies have been on my bucket list for ages. Lovely ship. Islands are a magnet to me, too.
There's just something magical about them eh!?
Thank you for sharing this trip. ☺
What a wonderful trip! I have the Cornwall area on my bucket list now (after visiting the cousins in Ayr) and finishing watching Doc Martin this past May. It is such a cool place with so much to see, but these little out of the way places are even better. thanks for sharing as always! 😀
Thanks for doing me on another adventure! It's a tricky place to get to from Scotland but well worth the effort :)
I want to talk my kids one day 😁
I enjoy everything about your videos: the filming, editing, commentary or none, your music and down to earth aesthetic, and you, yourself! 😘
Oh your method of transport beats mine! :)
What a beautiful community. Thanks for the mini tour.
Ah loved that! It's now firmly on my to do list - I've been to Marazion and St Michaels Mount, and the Isles of Scilly have long been on my radar. It made me proud to be English!
Thanks for coming along with me! :)
Never missed a beat with the detention cell joke ;) Well done, thank you!
Haha it looked quite comfy compared to some of my stays...
Oh I wish my wallet had allowed such a flight, would be magical indeed!
Another brilliant day trip expertly showcasing what you can do , the islands look amazing
Great video, Steve. You're a great geographist (if there's such a word) as I've never heard of the Isles of Scilly. Greetings from Australia.
I've long been intrigued by these islands, and while I' have liked more time, it was still great to finally get there!
Oh I need to keep an eye on its progress! Cheers mate
Cancelled. The new ferry was moored in Newlyn but in early August when H&W went with the begging bowl to the new government and were turned down, they pulled the service without a single sailing.
We splashed out, and flew from Penzance- what a wonderful experience ❤, although it was over 14 years ago- so lovely to follow this trip!
How beautiful is that place!? I've never managed to get further than Bristol in that direction, but with the train journey the other day and now the boat to the Scillies I think I know where I'm going next spring! 😁❤️
Ah a great choice! :)
Lucky people who are able to settle I no such a beautiful place.
Haha no way! Sorry we were so close yet so far!
Steve does it again. Great journey & look forward to you returning there for a few days. There’s quite a bit to see with the Neolithic monuments as well. I always look forward to Saturday with Steve’s journeys.
Oh a few more days there would be magic! Cheers :)
Oh here's hoping, I would LOVE to return there with Alicja!
Oh I wish I'd seen as much of the islands as you!
Great video as always steve living your best life and letting all us come along for the journeys. Dont ever stop. Keep up the amazing work
Thanks mate! I never forget how good a job this is :D
Say that is what a day trip should be thanks
Stunning video, I love the plant life in the Scillies, makes it feel special. Tresco is amazing too. Would love to see the boat trip around the islands if you do it.
Great video showing the Scillonian and you had a fantastic crossing!
If you feel St Mary's is like another world you need to visit the off islands, they're a whole other world.
Stay on an off island, (if you can find accommodation), it'll feel really special with your other half.
Oh I can believe it! Would be a dream to do some proper island hopping there!
@@steve-marsh if you're camping, St Agnes is the best 😉 Troytown make that ice cream you were eating!
A delightful video which brings back happy memories of our own trips on the Scillonian to the Isles of Scilly. You must return for a longer time and the opportunity to explore the whole of St Mary’s and the off islands. The Scilly Carts are a fun way to get around. 👏👏👍😎
Now that's what I call a daytrip! Classic ship and a great destination.
So true, the ship was amazing (although heard it's not so good in rough seas) :D
Another enjoyable & informative video really good now well done 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it Michael!
Unfortunately the increasing imports of hothouse-grown flowers trucked in from Europe has badly damaged that trade.
another enjoyable video. Thanks for sharing🙂
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Harold Wilson retired to Hugh Town, a bungalow on the right as you walked up the hill out of town. It was hilarious to see his big white Y fronts drying on the line and him sat in the garden smoking his pipe. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What a great memory 😃
High point of this video was definitely the, "If watching videos or playing music please wear headphones" announcement before the boat set off! We need much more of that type of common sense on ALL transport (and everywhere else) in the UK!
Oh yes PLEASE!!!!
Dearest Steve,
i love watching you and the places you go.,
i have watched so many, from Norway, Iceland and every thing in between
but this little Island is soo peaceful just loved it, please go back again if possible.
kindest regards Queensland Australia.
People are probably on time for fear of being left. But, during the walkabout I can't see where that would be so terrible. What a gorgeous place to visit and stay a couple of days. I would take the ferry both ways because I like boats as a mode of transportation. Nice video, I really liked this one.
Excellent film, I am really glad to have watched it, never having been to Scilly Isles.
Cheers for coming along Geoff!
A beautiful looking ship, old fashioned looking but just the way i like them. The new ship looks a bi of a monstrosity.
I agree!
at 6:31, I come from the moors just over the hill on the horizon.
Ah sorry I couldn't show more of Penzance though!
Maybe one day I can show myself! ( chuckle)

PZ, got something for sure, including memories.
Oh no Steve, we're going to have to stop following you after you dissed our favorite Cornish Cyder!!🐍🐍🐍 (kidding)
Cornwall is our favorite place in England, climbed to the top of St Michael's Mount twice and staying in St Ives for the 4th time next year!
I have family in Plymouth so we've stayed there several times.
The islands look so peaceful, thanks for taking us along as we've never been down that way.
Haha it did the trick, but worthy of the unsubscribe :D
Keep movin, Steve. It's more interesting this way.
Cheers Michael!
You used the word - perfect. A perfect day out and one that had me just a little bit jealous.
Haha yes it was a bit special!
What a wonderful day trip! I agree-you must go back and spend more time there. Take me with you🤓
Haha I'll give you a shout next time :)
Thanks
Thanks so much Mark!
Excellent & Informative as usual.....a great wee video :-)
Cheers Andy! :)
Yesterday you were at Dresden Traın statıon,today you are here :) I lıke your Vıdeos.Take care & Greetıngs from Turkıye
Simply beautiful..... And of course I'm sure by saying the main land you mean main island 😅😂❤
Haha good point!
For years we got the S61 helicopter to and from the Scilly Isles and I never fancied the Scillonian seeing it get thrashed around in the swell below us!
Does the helicopter still operate? Not sure if it's the same one I filmed or if that was something else?
@@steve-marsh No it stopped running a few years ago but I think there is a more modern smaller helicopter running now. The S61 was great fun and as you know the passenger version of the Sea King.
No such place as the Scilly Isles. You can say the Isles of Scilly or just plain Scilly but never, NEVER, the Scilly Isles. Say it to a Scillonian and they'll tie you to the deck and have you sail in a force 7 or 8 for a week.
As a scotsman living in Cornwall you did Cornwall well! ❤
You made it, well done! I think it's definitely worth it,
So happy to step ashore! Even if only for 3 hours!
@@steve-marsh Absolutely!
Just love your videos....so interesting....take care and see you again soon !!!
Cheers Jim!
Very very good thank you...a must see 🤪
Cheers pal!
