    Recent tip I learned... kind of unintentionally, but if you make a paste with the cinnamon and vanilla it mixes in no problem rather than float and separate. For years it bugged me till I figured that out.

    To get egg mixture over all of the bread I make egg mixture in a large bowl and add bread to bowl and pour all of it into baking dish. I make it often with blueberries or mixed berries.

      Oh that's a great idea! Makes sure every piece gets good and soaked with the egg mixture. Thank you!

      Betcha you could make this more on the savory side for a dinner by adding bacon or sausage to it & top it with cheese. Omitting the nuts & any sugars of course

    Yum! Pecans are a nice touch. I've been making this for years and my original recipe had small cubes of cold cream cheese pushed into the bread cubes before pouring the egg custard mixture over top, then just a drizzle of maple syrup over the top right before placing it in the oven. Easy to cut recipe in half for an 8x8 pan so you can have it just for two servings. Great video. 🌻

    Thank you so much for this. I was allowing current events to disrupt the calm and peace that I have been resting in with Christ. It’s been hard to watch events unfold, but I just cannot stop praying, crying, praying some more and then continuing with my life and praying in that. Sometimes I think God is out there just saying “this child just will not stop calling me” but my dependence is just that big.

    This has always been a favorite of mine. Sometimes I add blueberries and dollops of cream cheese. Peaches are also good. And for more of a gooey result, cook the brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon, with a bit of corn syrup (on low heat until the granules are dissolved) and pour in the bottom of the baking dish before adding the fruit and bread and egg mixtures. Lots of variations for this french toast bake!

    One of my family's favorites! We use stale bread or day-old bread from a nearby sandwich shop. The stale bread keeps its shape a bit better, even after soaking in the egg mixture overnight. We haven't done the crumble, though. We'll have to give that a try.

    We went to a bed and breakfast years ago that served this for breakfast! Of course I am not sure of their recipe, but this reminds me of what we were treated with for breakfast! I want to try this! I love the way you’ve organized your baking drawer, within hands reach! How do you like your kitchen aid mixer? I have been looking at them for quite a while, and would love to know what you like about yours, and if you would suggest the model you have or a different one? Thank you! Just subscribed! 👍🙂

      Hi Dina, thank you! I hope you enjoy the recipe. Yes, I kinda went thru and reorganized my kitchen to make that my baking area, and it works so well. I love my KitchenAid mixer; I do wish there was a better way to scrape the sides, but I think that's a problem with any mixer. I've tried the Bosch, and I came back to the KitchenAid because it's easier overall, both to use and to clean. I have the classic KitchenAid with the 4.5 qt bowl. I'm thinking of graduating up to the 5 or 6 qt mixer, so there's a little more room when making bigger dishes.

    This is really good if you use leftover Panatoni or Babka.... (traditional Easter holiday "egg bread" that looks like a chef's hat)... some even have raisins baked in it ...yum yum yum

    Do you know if this can be frozen? If so, when, i.e., cooked or not yet cooked? Thanks for a great video; looks delicious!

    • @MelLockcuff
      @MelLockcuff  4 года назад

      Thank you, Teri! Yes, You can freeze it. While I recommend covering it well and freezing it after it's already been baked because it'll last longer in the freezer this way, you can also freeze it before baking (though I'd add the topping later before actually baking it).

    Vanilla is easy to make. I use vanilla vodka and high quality vanilla beans. Your recipe looks great! Thanks for sharing.

      K m Yep! Get a dozen or so high quality vanilla beans and a cheap gallon of vodka. Cut the beans in half, not longways. Put the bottle in a dark closet. Every day for two weeks, turn the bottle upside down once or twice and put back. Then once a week for a couple months. Around six months you’ll have a lifetime of vanilla. At a year it’s almost black. Every time you fill a smaller bottle that you use in the kitchen, refill the bottle of vanilla with vodka. Turn it a couple times and put it back. It will always have to stay in the dark! I’ve had mine for at least two years and it’s still full and really dark! If you wait for the vanilla to get a third or more down before refilling it with vodka, you’ll have to wait another six months to use it again. I use a lot of vanilla! It cost me about $40 to start. For a gallon. Where at Costco it’s $30 for a small bottle!

      katy kayy I’ve got 20 beans now in my liter of vodka. Been tincturing 18 mos at least. Still smells just alcohol, very little vanilla smell or taste. Im sooooooo sad.

    • @katykayy
      @katykayy 4 года назад +1

      chadzwife1 That is sad! How dark is it? Did you cut them in half and not longways? Did you turn it consistently? And most important, have you kept it in a cool dark place? 😂 I just got out of bed (it’s 10 pm) just to smell my vanilla! It smells like real vanilla! Daylight will hurt your vanilla.

      katy kayy shook daily, then weekly. Keep in a cupboard. Didnt cut at all.

      Thank you, Diane! French toast casserole is a great make-ahead recipe. I recommend freezing it in an airtight container after it's been baked. It generally keeps better already baked.

    Looks like the the Bread Pudding I used to make, using either old sliced bread or left
    over French bread. I would sometimes add
    raisins to half of the pan. Never put that crumble topping on, but looks interesting.
    Never used that many eggs, but we didn’t
    have chickens! Just lots of siblings! That pan was enough for a typical dessert serving. Great idea for breakfast! I would sprinkle powdered sugar over it.

      Thanks. I was One of eight children, and helped my mother with meals. Created lots of meals from leftovers. Having grown up in New Orleans, I also loved using French Bread, Sliced and made into French Toast. Again, I use powered sugar and a splash of the local cane syrup.
