You're too kind, thank you. I don't know if "blowing up" is really in the cards for this channel, but you never know, I guess. For now, I'm very much enjoying the small group of regulars that I see in these comments. It's all of you guys that make the channel what it is. There's a difference between having a collection of videos, and having a community. You create the latter with your comments, and I appreciate that very much.
+PierreG ASMR You're very kind, Pierre, thank you! You nearly quoted my "About" page, actually. You've described exactly the atmosphere I'm trying to create. Best to you.
I feel that while digital music is functional, affordable, and accessible, records and CDs will always have that physical value no download can satisfy. Thanks for the great vid Gaslamp!
You're very welcome, and I agree. I'm definitely no vinyl elitist. My tunes come from every source. But vinyl invited a slower, more immersive approach to music listening, one that is hard to get back to these days. Perhaps that's an advantage of keeping the turntable set up in the living room. Although weeks go by without turning it on, it is a visible reminder that I need to heed my own advice, and SLOW DOWN. Thanks for being here.
Great video! Thanks for letting us learn so many new (old) things. I could never guess this cool pattern of dots really had a function, for example. Used to have a quite advanced old record player when I grew up, and it had so many wheels and switches I found fascinating, but never knew what they were for..
You're very welcome, sir! I enjoy the "demystification" that happens when you start to learn what seemingly mysterious devices or features were actually used for. Many times, the purposes make plenty of sense once you understand them, but before that, these things might as well be alien machines from outer space. :-)
When a vinyl head pulls out Aja by Steely Dan to demo some hi-fi equipment you know you are dealing with a true disciple of good sounds. I'm not an audiophile by any means but I always love hearing the passion in folks who know their stuff and want to share with the world.
Thanks very much for checking in, I'm really glad you liked the video. I'm definitely not an audiophile either (certainly not in the way that most would define that word), but you can't go wrong with Aja. Like, ever. ;-) Best to you!
This takes me back! Talk about Mr Peabody and his adopted son, Sherman, in the Way Back Machine! My parents were proud owners of a giant wooden console. It had pride of place in our living room. I remember listening to Cal Tjader's "Latin Concert" for hours on end - but only when my parents were at work. Thanks for the memories!
You’re very welcome, Phyllis! We had a big ol’ console, too. I used to imagine that I was working the controls on a space ship when I would use it. And it had such a warm, round, lo-fi tone to it (it sounded exactly as it looked, I realize!). AND it played 8-tracks (but that’s a whole other video)!
im a part of my college's radio station right now and im pretty sure that we use the exact same turntables!! it was really cool to listen to your experience. thanks for posting :)
Hi there Theo, thanks for the comment. So you’re a part of a current college station that’s still using turntables? That’s fantastic! I figured everybody is just streaming or playing audio files these days. Does your station have very much vinyl?
Just thought i'd pop you a note brother, I fell asleep to this last night for the...i'm not even sure how many times hahah. But realised I hadn't commented on it yet, so here it is! I've yet to get passed 15 minutes so decided to listen to it while playing hearthstone. Some fantastic points and always so interesting to listen to. Very cool to see you queuing up songs :D
Another great video, my friend. I'm a vinyl junkie so this video was especially appealing. Thanks for sharing your DJ story and for acknowledging Walter Becker. My favorite Steely Dan album is Katy Lied even though I think they're all great. Keep up the great work and thanks again for the video.
Thanks Louie, I appreciate the feedback. Yes, it’s too bad about Becker. I always wanted to see Steely Dan with the both of them (Fagan and Becker), but it never worked out. Such interesting music came out of those guys’ heads.
I don't know about the US, but here in the UK vinyl is making a real come back, with many of the bands again now releasing their albums on vinyl as well as CD/download.
Yep, the same thing is happening over here, since 2007 or so. Total sales are still barely a blip on the screen compared to digital sales, but the vinyl sales increase every year, which is an interesting trend.
Agree about the cost. That's the tough irony if you grew up in the period I did. Not only is the per-unit cost MUCH more now than when I bought vinyl "back in the day", but quality control is a bigger issue now. Two of the albums I bought in the last year have edge defects that render the first track unplayable. This is somewhat mitigated by having download codes, of course, but the bottom line (if my understanding is still current) is that no one is making new album-making equipment anymore. That means that the few factories still making albums are using equipment that is decades old. The only way to maintain this gear is to cannibalize other machines (around the world) that have failed and are being used for donor parts. I assume that all of this contributes to more variability in production quality. I don't mind paying more if I think I'm getting an even better product than I used to pay for. When I DO spring for vinyl these days, it stings when the defects are bad enough that I have to resort to the download. I love vinyl as a media, but it is hard to find my "place" in the economics of the current vinyl revival, as a family guy with a lot less disposable income than I used to have.
What speakers do you use? I'm assuming this isn't one that has usb ports? Mine is older too, so I have to connect with 12 gauge wire but my speakers are cheap/almost dead. Any recommendations?
I'm still using the speakers I bought shortly after college, a pair of Klipsch Quartets. They still kick butt, although I don't put them through the paces that I used to. lol I don't really have any recommendations for anything that's in the market these days. I haven't bought new stereo stuff in a long time.
Thanks very much for the comment. Yes, that Grado was the cart I got way back in 1990 or so, when I bought the table. I didn't do any comparison shopping or much research at all at the time, and it doesn't surprise me at all that the Grado isn't the best match. Same with the Ortofon, frankly. I received a Guitar Center gift card once as a payment for a gig that my band played, and I saw that my local GC sold carts. I was interested in trying something different, and the Omega used up the money on the card, so I bought it. I definitely haven't been a very choosy shopper when it comes to carts...
Who on earth votes these videos down? 🤔 Great video! Used to have a technics player and recently bought a record player again. Can part 2 have it turning with some vinyl crackles? 😉👍🔊🎶
Well, I know essentially nothing about current-day offerings, as I haven't kept up on the hobby since I bought my table. But I read a couple of reviews just now, and the consensus seems to be that the LP120 offers good value for the money. In terms of it being a "clone" - at that price point, I kinda doubt it. I'm sure they have made some changes/substitutions along the way. Plus, the LP120 contains its own preamp and an A/D converter for the USB output, so it's a bit of a different beast. But there are no shortages of reviews out there, so I would think that you can get a pretty good idea whether or not it would be a good purchase for you. Would this be your first turntable?
Cool. I looked that one up, too. I see that it is a belt drive table. It would be interesting to see if you can tell much difference between belt drive and direct drive if you go with the LP120. Good luck!
@@GaslampASMR alil update, I had picked up the Audio Techinca LP120... went returned it right away. The anti skate was completely useless. Literally did nothing regardless what you had it set to. So I picked up the Pioneer PLX-500... looks very similar but the anti skate actually worked lol. Been working great for 7 months now. Next I wanna upgrade my cartridge and stylus to the Ortofon red. It's odd I hear very lil of the Pioneer PLX-500 and the PLX-1000. Yet I see audio Techinca LP120 all overy... gets alota hate and for a good reason, poor quality control
Thanks for the update, Nick. Very sorry to hear about the quality control on the LP120. I’m all for A-T trying to maintain a place in the market, but they need to be careful how they do it. You can’t cut corners and maintain the reputation of the name. Congrats on the Pioneer! I looked it up, and was a bit surprised how closely the layout mimics the A-T 1200’s. I wonder if that is trademark-able. Glad it’s working out! Best to you.
Spotify, iTunes etc are great but you cannot beat taking a record out of its sleeve and playing it while you look at the album artwork and read the sleeve notes can you!
It has been nice having it. It's like a physical reminder of my radio days that has followed me around all these years since. And, it plays records! Bonus.
Ain't no shame in that! Whatever table helps you enjoy your collection is the right table for you. The built-in preamp in that LP60 is a pretty cool feature, actually. Thanks for commenting!
And perhaps the important question that I missed - How does the LP60 sound? Is it so much different than digital/streaming music that you feel you have to "calibrate" your listening or your expectations?
Gaslamp ASMR i got into vinyl because i love physical media. I like to physically own my albums as opposed to downloads. And records have always caught my attention... and the sound is great depending on the actually record. Ive only purchased new records so far
Well, that’s hard to say! If you thought it was one of the fingernails on my left hand accidentally grazing those timing dots as they went whizzing by on the edge of the platter, you’d be right on the money. If you thought it was anything else, then, um, NO. ;-)
This is most certainly the most underrated asmr channel in existence. Glad to know that I'm here before the channel blows up.
Yep, he always posts quality stuff.
additionally, you dont even have to be into asmr to appreciate his videos. they're too interesting.

I second that. Each time I listen to his voice, I feel like listening to an old friend telling me a fairytale in front of a warm fire ^^

I just read that Aja's 40th anniversary was this past weekend. It was released on 9/23/77.
Oh wow, I had no idea! That's some fantastic, though unintentional, timing.
Makes my day when I see a new drop from you. Long live vinyl.
Hey, thanks for that! Best to you.
I don't know about the US, but here in the UK vinyl is making a real come back, with many of the bands again now releasing their albums on vinyl as well as CD/download.
But oh so expensive! I love buying vinyl, but new albums cost a minimum of £20. Worth it though.
If you think it's worth it, then it's not expensive. :)

I buy Cradle of filth records lol. They need to relase all of their albums on vinyl
I wonder if this is the one...it must be...
turn table junction 🖤
I love this so much! Aaahh
Thanks! But if you’re looking for the first vinyl video, nope, this isn’t it! 😎🤔
Aja? You, sir, are now my favorite.
RIP Mr. Becker.
LOL, thanks!
Perhaps a side video where you play the whole album on this turntable? :-D
LOL, yeah, seems like there might be a copyright issue floating around in there somewhere, but I love the sentiment. :-)
Great taste in music. Not a bad track on that album. a classic. RIP Walter Becker
Fell asleep about 3 minutes in! Thanks!
You're welcome! LOL, only in this community would that be considered a compliment! ;-)
What a relaxng voice !
Thanks so much!
Just came here right after one of your outdoor videos! Weird coincidence.
Great video! Your voice is perfect for ASMR.
+Wandering Whispers Hey, thanks very much!

Nice asmr vid. I have owned a sl1210mk2 for several years, and found the showed Grado cardrige, not a good match for the heavy Technics tonearm...

Gaslamp ASMR oh yes! A bit of Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Stones...
Just in time, as always :)
Glad to hear it! I'm trying to make up for the yearbook video being a week late. ;-)
