    When I was a teen and listening to vinyl, it was fun to just sit on the floor with a friend, a stack of music, and a turntable, and pass albums back and forth while we compared notes about our favorite songs. In this video, join me on the living room floor in front of the turntable while we chat about albums.
    Instead of looking at influential bands from my youth (as in the first album collection vid), this time we’ll look at some “modern” vinyl, recent acquisitions produced during the current era of digital music and streaming content. We’ll listen to the sounds as I handle the record sleeves and covers, and compare and contrast the contents to see what they offer. Thorough liner notes? Lyrics? Band photos? Download codes?
    I hope you enjoy this casual hangout video. And if you like music movies, stick around until the end to hear my own fun way of putting the great movies “The Commitments” and “Once” in the same universe! ;-)
    This video contains the following triggers: soft speaking, paper sounds, plastic sounds.
    Please check out my “The Junk Drawer" playlist periodically for new casual videos of behind-the-scenes stuff or extra content. Follow me on Twitter (@gaslampasmr) for additional content as well. Also, check out my interview on The Dirty Nerdy Show: • Gaslamp ASMR Interview

      Waiting to receive Unknown Mortal Orchestra's newest "Sex & Food." Super stoked about that. Also been listening to Abba's "Super Trouper" and Grover Washington Jr.'s "Skylarkin'."

    I miss that relaxing longlasting moment that you mentioned, when you just listened to musuc, and that was it. looking at the album cover art and inner sleeve for 40-45 minutes. almost meditative. of course it was important that the artwork and design and paper and print quality was good! nothing was more boring than a white empty inner sleeve with a hole cut in the middle. I remember this state of mind from well designed cd booklets as well. but today with the digital onesong format, I think music has been something you listen to while doing something that is considered to be more important. (running, working, sleeping etc). it's very interesting to think about. will try to start just listen to music again, it's so nice. Thanks for a super interesting and great video!

      I completely agree, and even with all of that said, it is still hard for me to devote time these days to create that same kind of music listening experience for myself. I'm just as guilty of "convenience listening" or shoving music to the background as anyone else. Most of my music consumption is in the car, which is far from a fulfilling listening experience. It is valuable, to me, to fight the urge to multitask and just focus on one album, one song at a time, once in a while. I just need to do that more often.

    As well as being useful for music, vinyl records also make the best frisbees for impromptu sports.
    It's all that those ABBA records are good for.

      So true. The decapitation possibilities that they add to a game of disc golf are worth the sacrifice.

    I just listened to Glen Hansard, nerver heard him before but really felt emotional hearing it for the first time. Wonderful music

    • @GaslampASMR
      @GaslampASMR  6 лет назад

      Glad you enjoyed him, Moody! I’m curious - what did you hear first? What was the “first impression” song?

    • @RC2214
      @RC2214 6 лет назад +1

      It was two songs, Wreckless Heart and Falling Slowly (which I have heard others sing but still beautiful)

    • @RC2214
      @RC2214 6 лет назад +1

      I just checked and the reason why Falling Slowly sounded familiar, there where a man and woman duo who sang his song on the X Factor or The Voice, I forget which one

    • @GaslampASMR
      @GaslampASMR  6 лет назад

      Very cool. I'm a little behind on Hansard, as I haven't heard anything from the album he put out early this year (which Wreckless Heart is from, apparently). But Falling Slowly got tons of exposure back in 2007 (and won an Oscar!) when the "Once" movie came out.
      "Stay the Road" from his Didn't He Ramble album is a favorite of mine, and don't forget The Frames, if you want to hear him in more of a "rock band" context. Lots of hope and emotion is his writing, for sure.

    • @GaslampASMR
      @GaslampASMR  6 лет назад

      Cool, I'll have to check that out. Hard to believe the movie came out 11 years ago now, though! Crazy. And there's a non-duet version of that song on The Frames album "The Cost" that's worth a listen, also.

    Seeing you sitting on the floor took me back in time. Used to do the same to select a record and then stretch out on my back to listen. ♫♫♫ ♫♫♫ Really enjoyed The Commitments when it first came out. Going to watch it again and then watch Once. Should make a fun evening. Once again, another great video. Thanks. :o)

      Love the mention of The Commitments, t'was the first movie with consistent swearing that my Mum and Dad let me watch!

    • @GaslampASMR
      @GaslampASMR  6 лет назад

      LOL, absolutely! Love that movie. Although, frankly, I'm not sure if the "F-word" counts as a swear word in the working-class Dublin neighborhoods that Alan Parker is depicting here (unless the vicar is in the room, of course!). It is used more like a casual adjective. ;-) You'll find the same in "Once". Do I have any Irish viewers who can chime in on this?

      So sorry about that, WM - I know that with a bi-weekly schedule, if I get thrown off by a week or more, it seems like forever between uploads. It feels like that for me, too. When that happens, know that I do try to “catch up” eventually so that I still average out to bi-weekly. Sometimes inspiration, energy levels, and a quiet house just don’t line up when I want them to! Thanks for your patience and kind words - I appreciate your being here.

    YES Eric! Well done. I was looking forward to a new vinyl ASMR video and here it is. Well done. Love the idea for this...showing the differences between well thought out products and others that are just after thoughts. I remember watching the doc Sound City for the first time and always thought what a fantastic idea it was for Grohl to buy that console and keep it in working order just as it should be. It would be a dream come true to lay down drum tracks in his studio on that console.
    I was also thinking of all the great records I have upstairs in the music room and some of them are such works of art beyond the music itself and how it all played an enormous roll in the overall experience.
    Anyway...another home run, really enjoyed it. Keep up the great work.

    • @GaslampASMR
      @GaslampASMR  6 лет назад

      David, I really appreciate your thoughtful comments. You can definitely tell the passion that Grohl brings to every aspect of that project. The notion of "active preservation" (I just made that term up), meaning, the history is preserved by continuing to use the gear to create new music, rather than just collecting dust in a museum of recording technology.
      I agree that it would be fun to record on a board like that. I do wonder if my hobby-musician ears would be able to tell that something is noticeably, measurably better about my own sound through something as iconic as the Neve.

    Great video as usual. These are always a nice trip through time and sitting down on the floor was a fresh new perspective.
    Your comments about low effort releases was spot-on. Nothing is disappointing in the same way as getting a record that's simply black vinyl in a white sleeve. I try to seek out releases that put some love into the product. My favorite is my copy of Creatures by Motionless In White. It was a limited printing of 1000. The albums were hand-numbered and the vinyl itself was a purple and black splatter design. Fever by Bullet For My Valentine is a 2-disc set but only uses 3 sides, so side 4 is an awesome engraving of a logo. The front cover of The Satanic Satanist by Portugal The Man features a complex fold-out artwork that is also on the CD version. Point is, albums that go the extra mile make great impressions!

      Great comment, Mason, and thanks for describing those examples. They sound like really nice collector pieces. Completely agree that a deluxe vinyl package is quite a satisfying thing. You’ve got me wondering whether I have enough interesting-looking vinyl (colored vinyl, picture discs, half-speed mastered stuff) for a third video. Hmm, might have to check into that!

    Another great video, thank you GL.
    Greg Hansard! No, I've not heard of him, but I remember it being one of the albums laid on the table in your previous album collection and I always meant to ask you who it was. Now I know.
    You showed a few albums there, but do you think, as a rule, artists that are going back to vinyl ARE using the covers, etc., to add something to the music, or do you just feel in a lot of cases, they are using the same artwork they would have done on a CD cover (which wouldn't look as impressive - just think of the Kanzas album cover in your previous video) but larger.

    • @GaslampASMR
      @GaslampASMR  6 лет назад +1

      Hey there RF. Yep, now you know. I’m a big fan of Glen at all points in his career. You really can’t go wrong. Even his spoken interviews are a master class in facial expressiveness.
      No, I don’t think that most bands would deviate from whatever album design they came up with to take advantage of the vinyl format. Hopefully, in the interest of having a strong album identity, they would put just as much thought into that design regardless of format, and then anyone owning the vinyl would benefit from having a great album design in a larger size.
      I’ve said to my bandmates before that if I ever had money to throw away, I’d love to press an album in vinyl. There’s pretty much no reason to do that if you’re a local band, but I confess that it is on my “band bucket list”. Come to think of it, our second full-length album had very detailed cover art that would have looked amazing as a vinyl cover. Ah well, maybe someday...

    I adore this channel so much but this video is special. I think we are of similar age and I like you have a passion for music. I have just started a colouring kinda arts channel that reviews a rock n roll colouring book which I think shows our similar passion. Feel free to check it out
    Funnily enough I got into Pokey La Farge myself a few years back so it resonated incredibly. Keep it up the hard work my good man you really are a joy to listen to and watch 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      Thanks very much for your kind comment, sir. I did watch your entire video for the rock ’n’ roll coloring book, and enjoyed your musings about the bands very much. I was a bit surprised, given the purpose of the book, that KISS wasn’t featured. A bit camp, of course, but a KISS page would be a great thing to color, I would imagine. Anyway, best of luck on your channel! You seem to be off to a great start!
