- If you’re subscribed to Kev at WhisperCorner ASMR, you’ll remember that he did a series of five videos on a small antique atlas last year. If you missed them, check them out in this playlist:
• 1891 Atlas
In those vids, you get a close-up tour of every map panel in the atlas, as well as read-throughs of much of the lists and data in the front sections of the book. Really fantastic and relaxing stuff.
Near the end of that series, Kev contacted me and asked if I’d like to use that same atlas for any of my own videos. I was honored that he would think of me for this, and I was grateful to accept his generous offer. Near the turn of the new year, the atlas arrived in the mail.
It took some thinking to understand what I might do with this atlas that would compliment Kev’s videos, since his tour of the atlas was so complete. Ultimately, I decided to do two videos of my own, and I hope that you enjoy my own musings on this wonderful and fragile artifact.
This first video is a slow and patient show-and-tell in which I try to answer some of the questions I first had about the atlas when I saw it in Kev’s videos. We try to confirm the publication year of the atlas (playing around with some Roman numerals), talk a bit about John George Bartholomew and how he is credited for naming an entire continent, and finally do the big “cover reveal”, taking off the DIY wallpaper cover to reveal the original cover and the sad state of the book’s binding.
The second video will be called “Two Small Atlases”, and, well, the title alone is probably enough of a spoiler about what we’ll do in that video, so I’ll say no more about that one for now. ;-)
This video contains soft-speaking, paper sounds, some writing sounds (pencil-on-cardboard) and lots of very subtle fingers-on-wood sounds from bushing up against that old wooden panel. Love those panels! lol

Your pace and cadence was fantastic here. You weren't afraid of a small pause here and there. Instead of forced triggers and rambling, you focus on a smooth calm delivery. Another great episode.
Appreciate that feedback! After ~2.5 years of doing this, pacing/cadence is still the biggest struggle for me. Glad to hear that this one worked for you!
@@GaslampASMR that surprises me. I think you're by far one of the most patient asmr artists out there when it comes to delivery
Love this idea, love this video. So nice (and surprising!) to see this atlas showing up on this channel too.😍 The way you pay attention to details is just so charming. Looking forward to part 2 of this video. Btw Fantastic to hear the story about j g bartholomew!
Yes, I was just as surprised when Kev contacted me and offered to send the atlas along! I hope the first half has done it justice, and has complimented his own videos well. As soon as I can get some quiet time around here (it’s spring break week, kids home from school!), I’ll get Part 2 going. Wonderful to hear from you, as always! Hope you’re keeping well.
I started watching this literally years ago, and fell asleep to the cadence of your voice. Came across this just today and had to finish. :)
I love old books, and I love the original cover on this one! You have a gift for explaining details of the items or places you’re exploring in every video and though I haven’t watched your videos in far too long, it’s a delight to rediscover you…just like rediscovering a little gem of a book. ❤
I hope you’re doing well!
You're so kind, thank you very much! So glad you were able to finish this one up after all those years. Thanks for writing!
Well it's amazing to be checking out your videos again buddy! However nowhere near as amazing seeing all of your quality work with thousands of views. I remember way back when we couldn't understand why some of your videos didn't make even 50 views. Now here you are with a minimum of 1000 on each. It's still a fraction of what you deserve but something to think on :)
Thanks for the comment, Matt. You've always been very kind and supportive over the years, and it is good to see your name pop up in this little corner of RUclips. Congratulations on your continued success. :-)
Walking us trough your investigation was a brilliant idea.
Thanks for saying so!
Hey GL, this was fantastic. I sat up watching it from beginning to end. Its funny how different a video you made with the same book that I spent hours looking at.
Without giving any spoilers; I'll have to contact that eBay seller about the item description, and I didn't "not show you" the real cover as I never even thought of doing so. I thought the book would have fallen apart.
This is a brilliant, brilliant video and I'm looking forward to part 2.
Also, on a completely different topic for an upcoming video for you to do: ASMR How My Nails Look So Tidy.
Kev!!! So glad to see you here, and thanks again for sending this little artifact along. Getting to know it a bit better has been a wonderful project. To your point - you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT about the book falling apart without the DIY cover. I don’t know how clear it was in the video, but the book does actually separate into two parts without that extra cover. All of the page bundles that have the maps on them have completely separated from the binding, and the front cover is no longer attached to the spine, so the cover and all the maps are not attached to the rest of the book in any way. BUT, this gave me one other idea I wanted to investigate before filming Part 2, which is why there will be a bit of a delay between the two. If it works out, it could be super cool. [ Stop dropping spoilers, Gaslamp! ]
I think this is the video of how I discovered you from asmartica from an old video as i discover lots of great asmr folks, quite calm and lovely! Ill have to work backwards to the other videos you reference for this atlas too!
Thanks very much! I'm glad you're here, and hope you enjoy the other vids. Best to you.
It’s so cute! I’m looking forward to falling asleep while I listen to your musings, which should happen in 5, 4, 3 . . . and then having to rewatch later so I can fully enjoy. Great to see a new video from you!
Oh! Started working on your drawing this morning ✨
Thanks for the kind words, and I can’t wait to see what you come up with! (Shhhhh, top secret! ;-)
Hi Gaslamp! I've found some actual evening time (that's not at least a month after the video has gone up) to watch this properly. You are one of the people I cannot go to sleep with...that's because I get so involved with your videos. I also go straight to the publication page but I'm nowhere near as detective as you are :)
Swarms!!! So good to hear from you, and I so appreciate your kindness. Also, I watched your drawing video with the spirals the other day - it is so hypnotizing! Wonderful video. Best to you.
Loved all the interesting details! So relaxing! Didn't think I needed a nap, but found myself waking up at the thirty-minute mark and needing to rewind. :o) Great video!
Thanks Phyllis, appreciate that!
omgosh this is wonderful. I especially love the little things you point out & the page turning. happy to see this GL : )
I’m so glad the page sounds are coming through. Mic placement is key! lol So glad you enjoyed it.
What a perfect way to end a Friday can’t wait to see you at the live streams!
Thanks KC! Hope to do another one of those soon.
Wow. Just wow. This was fantastic. I hadn't actually felt any tingles in quite a while. But this had me tingling pretty hard the whole time. It was just a treat, as you would say.
As for the book: maybe Baumgartner Restoration would be able to help? :-)
Supernova, thanks for letting me know this! I generally assume most folks are here for things other than tingles, so it is fantastic to know that there are still some triggering moments floating around in there. And BAUMGARTNER!!! Heck yes. Have you seen the new weekly series he started? (About the book, I’m making some inquiries, but that’s all I can say for now. Not with Baumgartner, of course. But inquiries. ;-)
Great video! Nice and calming.
Appreciate that, sir!
Just started listening to this! Been waiting! Thanks!
You’re welcome, thanks for waiting! Part 2 will be along soon-ish. lol
Really interesting and great paper sounds!
Thanks for saying so, glad you liked it.
Love your voice and creativity! Your videos are very relaxing and enjoyable. I especially love the historical aspect! You got a like and sub from me! :)
Heyyy welcome back. Been waiting for ur video for quite awhile. Hope all is good and thanks for the latest video. I appreciate it.
You’re most welcome, Masimo. Thanks for the kind words.
I just heckin love this channel ♥️
That comment made my day, thanks!
This is so good!
Thanks so much!
Love this channel
Appreciate that!
Yussss! Perfect timing.
Glad to hear it. Enjoy!
Excellent video! I’m still using your videos to relax to. Hope you are well.
Thanks BB! Yes, we're all still ok here, although our state is trending in an unfortunate direction, and everybody is trying to figure out what to do with school next month. We're definitely not out of the woods yet. Thanks for stopping by!
OH MY GOSH!!!!
Look at handwritten "This book belongs to..." and it says they came from "Lewes" (pronounced "Lewis"). Now, I was assuming that was possibly Lewes, Delaware... however, the book was published in England, so I am wondering if it is Lewes, Sussex, England (about 8 miles from Brighton on the south coast.)
And guess what? Lewes is where I live here in England!
You mention about the temporary covering of the atlas being wallpaper, and this may give a clue as to why it was covered, which *may not* because it was in poor condition. Even in my school days (in the 1970s and '80s) it was the practice of teachers telling school children to cover their books (normally just their exercise books, though). And it was usually the case that most children would simply use wallpaper.
Hello there RF! Lewes, indeed! Small world, eh? I am sure that this is the Lewes in Sussex, since TheWhisperCorner sent this to me from Ireland. In fact, if you watch Kev's first video on this atlas, and look at the part where he talks about the handwritten note, he looks Lewes up in the gazetteer as part of the video (what he mutters to himself during this section is one of the funnier bits, and made me laugh out loud, actually! ;-)Very interesting point about using wallpaper to cover exercise books, though! This atlas definitely benefitted from having the extra cover, however, because it does separate into two pieces without it. Will plan a Junk Drawer video about the atlas' condition very soon. Good to see you!
Hey you're back! Haven't heard from yah in a while or seen any livestreams. Hope you're doing well!
Kyuubi! I can’t remember, were you in the 4K Subs stream a couple weeks ago? It was a ton of fun, check it out if you haven’t seen it. Hope you’re doing well also!
most hyped vid of 2019
lol, maybe so! Save some hype for Part 2, tho!
i think I just died and went to ASMR heaven
Come back! ;-) But glad you like the video.
I bet this will knock me right out!
Just don’t forget to watch the rest of it when you wake up! lol
Edit. Spoiler alert! :-)
Great unpacking. It felt surprisingly nice to see the old cover, not a picture of it from some sight on the internet but the actual cover of just that little atlas.
Yes, I completely agree. It was such a surprise to see that it was still there. Looking back at Kev’s vids, I realize now that if I had paid a little closer attention to certain parts, I would have seen little glimpses that would have revealed that the cover was still there, but I’m kinda glad that I missed those the first time. It was cool doing a reveal in the vid. I may do a Junk Drawer video on the current condition of the book, as well.
a very interesting, unique, different kind of asmr channel, glad i found it. also, your voice drives me nuts, i get tingles only hearing it and it never ever happens to me, i barely ever had asmr tingles. this alone is a huge fact. btw i have a starting, small asmr audios channel if anyone wants to show me some love. i have the feeling i'll come back pretty often. love from italy
Thanks very much for the kind words, and welcome to the channel!
